Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the March edition of your Hucclecote Link. At last the nights are starting to pull out, although with the bad weather still lingering, it may be a while yet until it starts to feel like Spring. I do hope you haven’t been too affected by the floods or storms in any way I would usually be saying that by now we might start venturing into our gardens to start getting them ready for the warmer months, but many of you may need help with fallen fences or broken gutters before getting Summer ready. If you do need help we have Colour Fence on page 18 who specialise with storm proof fencing and many other property maintenance companies, listed on our index page on page 30, that can help you get your home and garden back on track. Do you have little ones, if so Gloucester County Council are holding Stay and play sessions in your area and this is a great way of making new friends for both yourself and your child, read more about it on page 22. Or have you thought of volunteering? Home Start, a charity that helps make a difference to the lives of families within the community are looking for volunteers, you can read more about this on pages 25. Dave’s top tips

10

Working safely DIY enthusiasts need the same protection as tradesmen. This includes protective goggles and gloves, protective masks and ear protectors. Dust, sprays, and flying chips are not uncommon in DIY work – which is why you should protect your eyes. Standard protective goggles are usually sufficient. When performing work like sawing, sanding or chiselling, you should not underestimate the risk of possible hand injuries caused by chips. Full protection is only offered by special protective gloves. You should not wear any gloves when using hand-held circular saws, belt sanders and drills because they can get caught in the rotating tools. Don't forget breathing protection: When drilling, sawing, sanding, planing or routing, you should protect your lungs with a disposable protective mask – even better with a fine dust mask. When dealing with insulation wool or solvent-based paints and varnishes, masks with activated carbon filters provide the best protection. Don’t forget the strain put on your ears when drilling, sawing, sanding, etc. Earplugs are sufficient for sporadic use. If you frequently work with noise-intensive power tools, it is advisable to use ear muffs. Wear the right clothes: They should be comfortable, tight-fitting and flameproof. Watches and jewellery are dangerous and should be taken off before you begin with the work. For your own safety, tie up long hair to prevent it getting caught up in running machines. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Garden Club March is a great month for planning and looking ahead to how we hope our gardens will look in the coming year. Daffodils are blooming, the snowdrops have gone over, crocus give a tiny blast of colour in the borders and with all the ideas we have picked up from Jon Mason, from Highfield Nurseries, we are all off to the Garden Centre or Nursery to spend, spend, spend. We have our AGM later this month when we can look back on the past year of Speakers and activities, and also look forward to a good mixture of tried and tested Speakers and Speakers new to Hucclecote. As part of the AGM we have a return visit from David Cramp from the RSPB who will be talking on Birds of Gloucestershire. Reflecting on Winterwatch and the changing species of birds in our gardens due to climate change, and the Big Garden Birdwatch in January where in Barnwood Arboretum alone 23 different species of birds were counted, I am sure David's talk will be of interest to all. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month, 7.30pm at Hucclecote Community Centre. Do come along for a cup of tea/coffee, take part in our raffle and learn a little more about our gardens and local environment. For more information please contact Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD We are a friendly group of local ladies, who meet at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. Our monthly evening meetings include a speaker or demonstration, a raffle, the bring-and-buy sales table, refreshments, and the chance to chat and socialise. We also have a programme of events coming up, including the Ramblers Group, bi-monthly lunches at local pubs or restaurants, and an introduction to indoor bowls, with afternoon tea, during the summer. Our most recent speaker was Frances Seeney, who told us about her tour through Vietnam and Cambodia. Together with her photographs, Frances painted a vivid picture of these two breath-taking countries. Future speakers include Jane Dyer from Gloucestershire Young Carers; a charity we have supported in recent years, and John Butterworth, on "The Hotel with a Famous Guest List". Guests and visitors are always welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along on the night! To advertise call 01452 617040

At the end of the month we have an outing to Rococo gardens in Painswick to see the Snowdrops. Next month our speaker is from “ Young Gloucestershire” which is our charity for 2020. For more information please call Beverley on 01452 613208 or just pop in and you will be made very welcome.
