Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the March edition of your Hucclecote Link. By the time you receive this months directory there is talk of the possibility of all Covid restrictions being lifted! So if you welcome this news of getting back to normal and would like to start to get back out there and socialise again check out some events that are happening at the Hucclecote Community Centre over the next few months and maybe get some dates in your diary. If you fancy treating yourself this month - why not pop along to The Village Cakery. Based in Churchdown, but they offer a variety of fresh cakes, brownies, cup cakes, coffee, milkshake and ice cream - I’m sure you won’t be disappointed, you can find them on page 18. Another treat for you, Kara’s hairdressing are offering a 25% discount during March on hair colouring if you take our advert, which you can find on page 15. Hopefully Spring is around the corner, so this is always a time for starting to look at the jobs that might need doing outside our homes to get our gardens Summer ready. We have a variety of gardeners, landscapers, and property maintenance businesses that can hep, you can find them on our index on poge 26. If you run a local business and your customers live in one of our distribution areas, please do get in touch to find out how we can help get you in front of them with our March offer. Have a great month Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Mixing concrete
Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, gravel and water. Variations in the ratio of the ingredients produces a mix suitable for different jobs but here we will be instructing you on a general purpose mix suitable for most garden tasks and shallow foundations – not house foundations. Mix 1 part cement, 2 parts sand and 4 parts of gravel. What you use to measure the parts depends on how much concrete you need – normally buckets are the best measure, one part being a level bucket full. Adding water is not a simple matter as the sand you are using might already be wet. So use trial and error – add some water and mix until the consistency is right. How do you know – well a shovel full will stay in a loose heap and not slop over the edges but the mix is soft enough for you to smooth and shape easily. What ever you are applying the concrete to should be wet as this helps the concrete bind to it. The mix dries and hardens – but if it the conditions are too hot the mixture will dry unevenly and crack. So if the concrete is in full sun on a hot day cover it with a sheet so as to slow down the drying. As the mix dries, it will harden. But the drying, or ‘curing’ should be gradual, otherwise cracking may occur. To prevent cracking, plastic is placed over the curing concrete to trap the water inside, ensuring gradual curing.” Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. We have a varied programme of speakers - recently Kate Rendell's talk entitled "Costumes and fabrics of Georgian Times" was an equal mix of dressmaking, photography, and the history of fashion, and very entertaining - and in March, Mike Bottomley's talk will cover the myths and legend of "Jack in the Green". The second half the meeting is the chance for a cup of tea or coffee, a chat with friends, the bring-and-buy sales table, and the raffle. We are a friendly group of local ladies, and guests and visitors are always welcome! Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along on the night!
Hucclecote Garden Club We are continuing to meet in the Community Centre on the fourth Thursday of the month and our turn-out has been encouraging, averaging nearly 30 per meeting. Julie Ritchie from Hoo House Nursery on the Gloucester to Tewkesbury Road came along with her talk 'Winter into Spring', which included fantastic examples illustrated with digital images, of perennials (plants that flower year on year) and bulbs to interest over the quiet time of the year.Even in the depths of winter our gardens can produce colour in the form of stems and bulbs and scent from the blossoming winter flowering honeysuckle. Daffodils and Nascissus take pride of place in March and appear in most gardens, as well as the ever popular Crocus, and with the prospect of longer days and evenings we can certainly look ahead to spending more time in our gardens. If you are a novice gardener or a more mature gardener you are most welcome to our Gardening Club. Our start time is 7.30pm with coffee/tea and biscuits, a raffle and great speakers. For more information please ring Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. HUCCLECOTE LARKHAY WI Our February meeting got off to a good start with Caro Day, who gave us a talk and demonstration on ‘The History of the Everyman Theatre’. She made it very interesting and entertaining. A group of us went to the Everyman Theatre before our talk to see Private Lives which was excellent and we enjoyed it very much. Next month we have the ‘Great Western Air Ambulance’ coming to give us a talk, (as this is our charity for the year) and we very much look forward to this. Also next month we have skittles lined up for an evening out with both friends and family, always a fun evening. We meet at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the second Thursday of every month at 7.30pm (except August). For more information please call Betty on 01452 698299 or just pop in and you will be made very welcome. To advertise call 01452 621496
