A bit about “The The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the May edition of your Hucclecote Link. It’s a month for birthdays this month...not only is it a certain milestone birthday for myself this month, along with 3 other close family members birthdays, but we are also celebrating 6 years of publishing the Hucclecote Link, which I think is a great achievement. So as ever, I owe a big thank you to everyone who helps to keep this business thriving; that includes the businesses that advertise with us, my team of distributors who deliver the directories through your door and to yourselves, the readers, for using the businesses in the directory and so helping to keep them and the local economy alive. I think (with fingers crossed) that the weather is now at last improving. I have turned my heating off this week (finally!) so lets hope it stays off for a while! This is a great time of year to get all those outside jobs completed and we have plenty of local businesses that can help you complete them. From roofing, see Britannia Roofline on the front cover, to Garden maintenance, property maintenance and conservatories, you can find a list of our businesses on the index on page 34. With an improvement in the weather, your thoughts may be turning to the Summer holidays ahead, and the count down to that bikini body! Well this month we have some great local fitness companies on board, with something to suit everyone, from Pilates, to outdoor circuits, to a personal trainer, all of these can be found on page 31. Alternatively a round of golf may be more your cup of tea and with Hatton Court having taken over the running of the Bar and Restaurant at Painswick Golf Course, why not treat yourself at the end of the round, more details on page 2. Please remember, as always we can be found on our Face book page; www.facebook.com/TheLinkDirectories or on twitter; www.twitter.com/@Sarah_Gerken - we would love to connect with you.

Dave’s top tips Time for a biscuit A Biscuit Jointer is a wood cutting machine that (together with timber "biscuits") is used to join two pieces of wood together. This is a very simple procedure for joining two pieces of wood together by cutting an oval shaped groove into two opposing pieces of wood that are to be joined to make one piece of longer timber such as in kitchen worktops. A PVA glue is placed into the oval cut and the biscuit (an oval piece of compressed timber, “often beech”) is placed into the grooves and the two pieces of wood that are to be joined are then clamped together. When the biscuit comes into contact with the glue, it expands and ends up making a joint that is usually stronger than the existing wood sections themselves. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Everybody has a brain. Thank goodness for that because without that brain you would be dead. Now the brain connects to the body via wire-like structures called nerves. We chiropractors study the way the nerves interact with the body, like your internal organs (heart, pancreas, liver) as well as the muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments. We also know how the stresses of life can affect the clear transmission of information or energy along those nerves, which can affect any organ of the body often without you being aware of it. Don’t worry though because chiropractors are trained in the identification and treatment of nerve interference. The result is a reduction of your pain or other symptoms, and an improvement in your quality of life. At the Chiropractic Wellness Centre you’ll be greeted by our CA’s (Chiropractic Assistants) who are always friendly, and they will guide you through the simple procedures. You’ll be gently assessed. Part of that assessment uses non invasive scanning technology to measure subtle changes in your spine and nervous system which enables the doctor to get a really good idea of what is going on in your body as a whole. After that we give you a thorough report followed by recommendations for care moving forward. The care could be relief/crisis care, Rehabilitative/Corrective Care or Maintenance Care. We are completely dedicated to restoring health to each and every person who walks through the door whether that means getting out of pain so you can look after the kids better or improve your performance for sporting events. Gardening Tips for May from Garden Delight..

25

Better late than never.. Normally the tips listed below would be a perfect recipe for gardening in May.. However.. This year who can tell .. Everything is happening much later, but that’s ok. Never try to rush the season go with it so if you have to put back your plans a little that’s fine the plants will catch up.. There are not any formulas to gardening just principles.. So go with the weather not the calendar date .. And if in doubt check with the weather forecasters they always get it right! Flowers, Tubs and Borders Start to plant out the tender bedding plants, e. Busy Lizzies, Marigolds, Petunia etc..Don’t be tempted to go too early but keep an eye on the weather. Late planting will soon make the growth up as spring turns into summer Continue to prune back spring flowering shrubs as they finish flowering e. Kerria, flowering currants and brooms. Early flowering rockery plants such as Aubrietia, Yellow Alyssum and white and pink Arabis will be now going over, trim them up to keep them neat and tidy. Make up your flowering hanging baskets, use a specialist container and basket compost which contains a water retention gel and slow release fertilizer. You can put them out on sunny days but keep an eye on the weather and bring the baskets indoors if signs of late frosts or strong winds. Move up the supports on taller growing perennials tie in the stems as they grow. Fruit and Vegetables Toward the end of the month plant out French and Runner Bean plants. As the month warms up plant out Sweet Corn in blocks or a grid pattern as this aids pollination which is required to produce the cob. Make successive sowings of lettuce and cutting leaves. Sowing seeds every couple of weeks will give you a regular crop through out the summer. Sow Beetroot, Swede and Parsnips outside directly into the soil. Place straw or mats under Strawberry plants to protect the developing fruit and keep them off the soil Ponds Fish should be coming to the surface as the weather warms up so you can increase the amount of food you give them. Its best to use a floating pellet and feed at the same time each day removing any food left on the surface after 20 minutes If the days are sunny then blanket weed will develop, you can get rid of this by using a bamboo cane and twirling it around until a clump of the weed sticks to the end of the cane. Barley Straw bags are a good natural way of clearing Blanket Weed and algae growth and available from most good aquatic centres Lawns Treat Lawn weeds with a selective lawn killer i.e. one that kills the weeds but not the grass. A good example would be Verdone Extra which kills White Clover, Dandelion, Plantain and Black Meddick, but remember if your lawn is mainly weeds you will not have much left if you kill them all! Check out our web site for more information and a list of the services we offer www.gardendelight.co.uk Disclaimer – these tips are the result of many years experience in gardening however no guarantees can be given. Remember there are principles to successful gardening but no formulas. Please mention The Hucclecote-Link when responding to adverts

St Philip and St James Church I want to be Christ-like and not Christian Recently I read a ‘tweet’ from an atheist friend echoing the words of Gandhi “I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ.” It seems to me that in the twenty first century the Christian community finds itself with an ongoing identity crisis. So often our words and deeds seem at odds with the faith we believe and regretfully we fail to be Christ-like as we engage with contemporary society. Over the centuries so much pain has been caused by those who should have known better, so much atrocity has been committed ‘in the name of God’. Having just returned from some time out I am very struck by the awesome challenge to not only be a follower of Christ, a Christian, but also to be Christ-like. To be Christ-like is costly and will take all that we are. To live like Christ will require a heart full of love, arms open wide, with a genuine longing to make the world a better place. The Bible reminds us ‘God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’ (John 3:16). That verse leads me to believe me that being Christ-like is unselfish, looking first to the needs of others, perhaps being Christ-like is about breaking down walls of division and fostering the love of God, seeking an end to injustice and living an intentionally sacrificial lifestyle. One thing I know for sure – it is better to be Christ-like than to simply follow the crowd. Revd Andrew Axon, St Philip & St James, Larkhay Road' To advertise call 01452 617040

Hucclecote Scout Group With the weather being so cold and Easter early, we had to cook Easter biscuits on gas stoves instead of outside on open fires. We hope Spring weather will soon come as plans for our May Day Camp are all made and we need to practice to start lighting fires and pitching tents. With 35 on camp its always a good time for new Scouts to really enjoy Scouting, cooking on open fires (if you have never tasted egg and bacon cooked on an open fire you have missed out of real cooking). Plenty of games and activities with a camp fire each night run by the older Scouts. 15 Scouts are off Go Karting and Lazer Tag at the end of April, always a popular activity with plans for water sports in June. April 21st will have seen all the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts march through Gloucester to the Cathedral for the annual St Georges Day Parade with nearly 1000 boys and girls altogether. Any boys or girls wishing to join the Group are most welcome, 6 to 8 year old Beavers, 8 to 10 and 6 months Cubs, 10 to 14 Scouts and 14 to 18 Explorers. Please phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society Here I am at the end of the first week in April, and still not a seed or a potato planted. The only things I have to my name are the broad beans and sweet peas which I put in before Christmas. Maybe next year that is what I’ll have to do with everything that I want to grow! Our next meeting is on 23rd May when we will be having a visit from Duncan Coombs from Upton-on-Severn. Duncan will be talking to us about Lilies in the garden – all being well covering both the ‘over and done with’ day lilies and those huge and gorgeous scented lilies that we see in gardens that we visit. What I am most interested in is finding a way of getting rid of those pests, the lily beetles. They look nice, but can destroy your lilies in no time. On 27th June we will then see Dave Cropp, whose topic will be a subject that we are all having to come to terms with – just think last summer and this spring – Defensive gardening in a time of climate change. With water butts redundant last year, and so far this year a dry but very cold few months, I am sure that he will have some good advice to offer. We are also hoping that our trip to Birmingham Botanical Gardens will take place in June, when all being well there will be plenty for us to see and to learn about. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm with refresh-

ments from 7.15 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents. More information from Chris on 610694. To advertise call 01452 617040

Hearts & Hurricanes WI

33

Hearts and Hurricanes WI was a year old this February! It was only a year ago that we held our first official meeting selecting the team to guide us. Looking back, we have had a great time making friends and learning something new with wine, tea and cake to help us along. We chose the March meeting to celebrate our first birthday, Francis Day the organiser of Painswick Art Couture Festival www.acpfestival.co.uk provided our talk on the idea of Art Courture, clothing through art. Please have a look at the website, it sounds like an amazing event that many of us are intending to visit this summer. On Wednesday 10th April 'Selecting the right plants for your garden' was the topic of the talk given by David Bentley a local horticulturist, one WI member (drawn at random) was chosen to have their garden soil tested, David was on hand to advise on the right plants for the type of soil and gave some good advice on clay soils which seems to be common in the area. May’s meeting will be on Wednesday 13th May and our guest speaker is Krista Woodman, a local Yoga instructor. Please come dressed in comfortable clothes for giving it a try, if you have a yoga mat available please bring it along. Upcoming events include Family Pet evening in August and Wine Tasting in October with friends and partners (Men are invited! ) New members are more than welcome at this newly established WI. We meet on the second Wednesday of every month at Coopers Edge School at 7:30pm. Entry is free for members and £3.00 for non-members. Please join our Facebook page or visit our website for regular news

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild . The Annual General Meeting of Hucclecote Townswomens Guild took place at the March meeting-it was well attended and a full Committee of officers and members was achieved for the coming year. After the AGM, members looked forward to hearing a talk by local journalist Di Alexander, with the intriguing title of ‘Pen and Polisher ‘, when she related her tales as a local journalist (‘Pen’) and as a cleaner to Pamela Jackson nee Mitford! (‘Polisher ‘)- the latter job covering her early life while her children were growing up. Hopefully Di will come and tell us more about her adventures when working for Pamela ( known as ‘The Other Mitford’ as she lived a fairly normal life compared with her famous sisters,) another time! Di thoroughly enjoyed her job as a local journalist, writing and interviewing personalities for local magazines and newspapers, among these Jilly Cooper, Pam Ayers, and Cheltenham Sweet maker Ernest Marshall and his family with whom she has enjoyed a lifelong friendship! and covering an area from Coleford to Oxford and Salisbury to Stratford, initially working with typewriters, carbon paper, and desk spikes(no longer allowed!) Di ended her enthralling talk by stating the three principles of journalism, 1.Always tell the truth 2.Get it right! 3.Don’t use complicated words-only short words. A very interesting and enjoyable evening. The May meeting of HTG will take place on Thursday 16th May, at Hucclecote Community Centre, at 7-30pm, all members and visitors will be made very welcome.
