Dave’s top tips Painting a flush door A flush door is a door without any additions. There are no panels or glazing windows just a straight forward flat faced door. Painting a flush door, although they are the most basic of doors, is one of the hardest job of all door painting as there can be no break when painting a side. If you stop for more than a minute or two the edge of the paint hardens and this can show through the painted finish as a ridge in the paintwork. The flush door should be held open by using door wedges pushed in under the door after a piece of cardboard or old carpet off cut has been pushed under the door to protect the floor. Take off the door handles and smear a tiny bit of Vaseline on the hinges. This will stop any paint sticking to them and if you do get paint on the hinges it will allow you to wipe it off easily. Use the hose of the Hoover to suck out any sawdust from the lock or latch apertures. Flush doors can be painted by using a roller and if you do this use a small (radiator) roller. Go over the rolled door with a dry brush to brush out any stipple effects the roller may have left. It is much better, especially when using gloss paint to use a roller with natural fibres such as sheepskin, mohair or wool. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Sweets I was in a sweet shop the other day, the type which I could remember from my childhood with shelves stacked high with big jars full of different kinds of sweets; Bon Bons, Rhubarb & Custard, Sherbet Lemon and Humbugs. It was an amazing array of flavour, shape and colour neatly arranged from floor to ceiling. I don't know if you have ever watched someone trying to make a choice as to what to buy, but in front of me were two children with their mother, each holding some coins with which they were going to purchase a small bag of 'confectionery heaven'. For what I am sure seemed like an eternity for their mother, these children agonised over the decision they had to make, a fact I was grateful for as I was next in the queue and had no idea what I was going to select from the vast stock in front of me. Every day we are faced with many choices and decisions; what should we wear, what shall we have for tea, where shall we go on holiday, what car should we buy but then there are the bigger issues like where should we send our children to school, or where should we live. You can hardly miss that this is an election year and gradually each political party has been unveiling their manifesto pledges, each trying to convince us that they are our best option for running the country. Often we stand like the child in the sweet shop, grasping our coin whilst staring in bewilderment at the alternatives in front of us. The problem is that choosing something different brings risk, a risk that we don't like the flavour of the sweet, a risk that our fashion sense will be called into question, a risk that our child won't get the education we want or a risk that the party we vote for won't live up to their promises. The Bible describes God as 'The same yesterday, today and forever' so I pray that whatever choices or decisions you are making at the moment, you will know the one person who can be trusted.

Hearts and Hurricanes WI We are a young WI group who meet on the second Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in the Community Room at Coopers Edge School. It's a great way of making new friends, and we promise a friendly and warm welcome. We've had several new members join us recently, but we're still on the lookout for more like-minded ladies. For our May meeting (Weds 13) we're trying pole dancing, and in June (Weds 10) we're having a vintage tea party to celebrate 100 years of the WI. For future meetings we've got things such as researching family history, flower arranging and car maintenance planned. In between the monthly meetings we also hold other clubs for WI members: book club, craft club, a dining club, and we organise regular social events such as cinema and theatre trips. We always include time during our meetings for tea (or wine!) and cake and a chance to chat with other members. For more information, please see www.heartsandhurricaneswi.weebly.com. You can also contact us on 07934 170304 or heartsandhurricaneswi@hotmail.co.uk. Why not give it a go - we'd love to see you there!

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMEN GUILD The Guild meets on the third Thursday of every month, at 7.30pm, at the Hucclecote Community Centre, when there are speakers covering a wide range of interests and topics, tea & coffee, and the chance to chat and socialise. Speakers for the next few months include Celia's Pantry Preserves, Wainwright Coast-to-Coast, and the Ifakara Bakery Project in Tanzania. The most recent speakers at the TWG gave us the chance to revel in nostalgia, with "Those Were The Days - The Fab 50s". Gill and Virginia brought along a plethora of memorabilia from the 50s, from newspapers and magazines, kitchen utensils, toys, clothes and jewellery, which illustrated their recollections and anecdotes. It was a very amusing and entertaining evening. The programme of other events for 2015 was outlined - a Fashion Show in August, theatre trips, the annual Inter-Guild Quiz and the annual Skittles evening. Visitors and new members are always welcome to join us. Phone Linda on Gloucester 617701 for more information - or just come along!
Hucclecote Horticultural Society Now the weather is cheering up a little, and Spring has definitely sprung, it is time to be out and about in the garden more. Have you got your tomato seeds in, in their pots yet? Your broad beans? Your parsnips and carrots? Time to get cracking if you haven’t. I am putting my sweetcorn in the garden this year – the badgers at the allotment had it all last year. We have a couple of plant sales coming up – with lots of interesting plants and other gardening bits and pieces provided for sale by our members. The first is on 4th May when we have a stall at the Hucclecote Methodist Church sale, and the other on 20th June when we will again be taking part in the Hucclecote Fayre, on the King George field. Our May meeting is on the 28th, when we will be entertained by Alan Wells from Longhope. Alan is a local beekeeper, and he will be explaining to us how we do not need to keep bees in order to be beekeepers. We simply have to arrange our gardens and allotments properly, and the bees will come to us. And we badly need more bees, so it sounds a good idea. Then in June we will be learning the History of Kew – courtesy of our own member Jan Broadway. Many of us will have visited Kew, without necessarily knowing when it was started, or by whom, and what water has passed under the bridge there since then. This will be a chance to find out. Our meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm with refreshments from 7.15 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents. More information from Chris on 610694.

Hucclecote Scout News The Group Founders Day Celebrations went well with a good turn out of boys, girls and parents. The items by each unit went well and the food at the end soon vanished. We hope to have our first short outdoor activity weather permitting this Friday (13th), we have started the ski instruction on the ski slope and already Scouts are coming down from half way up the slope. With 8 Scouts going into Explorers in September they are finishing off their Chief Scout Award ( the highest badge in the Scout section) then they will start on Queen Scout Award. With details of the May day camp out most of the Scouts are coming so we will have at least four patrols in camp at a local site. The Scouts will be building their pioneer bridge at the Brownie and Guide Show at Dinglewell school on Saturday 9th May. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you have any children between 6 and 14 for more information if they would like to join the group.
Hucclecote Larkhay WI Our speaker in March was Robert Agar-Hutton from the Agar-Hutton Martial Arts Academy who showed us some basic training and moves for Tai-Chi. He was very patient with us as and although it looks very easy there are lots of moves that have to be memorised and some are quite intricate. It was both enjoyable, informative and good fun. We have lots of things happening throughout the year, speakers and outings so why not come and see for yourselves, there is definitely something for everyone, and you would be made very welcome. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm (except for August). Phone Jan on 01452 698299 / or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just come along, we look forward to seeing you. Please mention
