Dave’s top tips Low level to close coupled cisterns How can I change my old low-level toilet to a new close-coupled toilet without having a gap behind the cistern? Well there are two possible answers. You either move all of the outgoing pipework in your bathroom wall or floor, or you make a simple box that goes on the wall behind the new close-coupled cistern. The new cistern is then fixed to this box, which can then be tiled or painted depending on what you like. Even if the bathroom walls are tiled already, using strong construction adhesive you can stick the required timbers on the wall and then tack some plasterboard to them when the adhesive is dry. Make sure that you insert a timber cross member at the height of the screw holes which secure the cistern to the wall. The reason a low level toilet does not often exchange easily for a close coupled unit is because 99% of the time a low level unit has a waste outlet which goes down into the floor. If the low level unit you have has a waste outlet which goes directly through the wall or turns at a right angle out of the back of the toilet to go right or left away from the toilet, then you should have no problem replacing it with a close coupled toilet. If your low level unit goes into the floor, the floor outlet is too far away from the wall to allow an easy exchange with a close-coupled unit. You can either dig up the floor and install another pipe, or continue with the box method described above. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HUCCLECOTE GUIDING: The units and district have been busy the last few months with lots of exciting activities. On February 22nd we celebrated World Thinking Day with a sleepover for all sections and had an international space station theme with lots of Space activities. I’m not sure that the girls or leaders slept much but everyone enjoyed themselves. During the half term girls attended a badge in a day where they did activities to gain their wildlife explorer badge. The annual Easter Fayre was held in Dinglewell Junior School and once again was a great success, there was the Easter Egg Hunt, craft stalls, tombolas and a raffle. Thank you to everyone who helped either by setting up or coming along and joining in the fun. As we go into the new term the different sections will be planning activities that can be done outdoors, and hopefully for better weather there will be day trips, camps and other exciting evening activities to keep everyone busy. If you have girls interested in joining any of the unit please contact the district commissioner on Glos 550966 for further information. Hucclecote Scout News With the longer nights here we have already been outside lighting fires and pitching tents as practise for May Day camp. After sixty years of running camps and other activities last years Father and Sons camp run was by Explorer Leader. With this years May Day camp being run by Steve Plant who has been helping run Scouts for at least 15 years. Although Scouting has changed a great deal from when I started we have moved with the times with many new badges and activities. Many organisations have copied are format over the years but cooking on open fires themselves and sleeping in tents, with many other Scouting activities on camp it still has appeal. It is 108 years since Lord Baden Powell held the first Scout Camp on Brownsea Island with 15 boys. Since then Scouting is in nearly every country in the world with the aim of helping everyone to grow up as good citizens. On Sunday 24th April over 1000 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers walked through the City for the annual St Georges day service at the Cathedral. With summer here we hope with fine evenings we will be on the field next to the H.Q building pioneer bridges and activities on the Stream. The session on Go Karting and Lazer Tag went well with 20 Scouts doing the activity, with climbing being the next main activity. Please phone terry on 521664 if you have any children (boys and girls) who would like to come along for an evening and see what we do.

Hucclecote Garden Club May is traditionally quite a busy month for our Members and Committee who have been hard at work potting up plants, setting seeds, looking out old garden tools, pots, books in readiness for Hucclecote Methodist Church's Plant and Garden Bring and Buy Sale due to be held on Bank Holiday Monday May 2nd, 11.00am to 1.30pm. Hucclecote Garden Club has a table of plants for sale, along with other gardening related items, the proceeds of which help to fund the interesting and exciting Speakers for our monthly meetings. The Show which has many tables of perennials, annuals, wild flowers and vegetables, has the atmosphere of a really busy jumble sale with visitors bustling to buy the most colourful and interesting plants on sale. On the 26th May we have Dr. Jan Broadway, our local Hucclecote Historian, and one of the Founder Members of our Society, speaking on the National Trust Gardens of Gloucestershire. We are particularly blessed in our area to have many beautiful National Trust Gardens open to the public, including Hidcote Manor Gardens near Chipping Campden and Snowshill Manor near Broadway. Jan has previously spoken on The History of Kew, and J.C. Wheeler & Son of Gloucester - the History of a commercial Nursery, both really interesting and entertaining talks. We have a varied programme of talks to come throughout the remainder of the year - why not come along. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm, cost of entry to non-Members, just ÂŁ2 - with tea and coffee available, a raffle and a great speaker, as well as very knowledgeable gardeners available for gardening tips/ideas. Hucclecote Larkhay WI Again we had a very good month, firstly it started with a friendly skittles evening and this was enjoyed by all. Secondly we went to the garden centre at Whitminster, so people could look and purchase plants for the coming season. As normal coffee, cake and lunch were available. Last but not least we had a fashion show which was hosted by the Upton St Leonards WI. The fashion garments were supplied by Bon Marche, many things were purchased and the evening went very well. We have speakers most months on various topics. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Jan on 01452 698299 / or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just come along, we look forward to seeing you. 'Tis the season to be......voting! Having recently moved house within the Parish I had to re-register to vote in readiness for the coming elections. It does seem as though there will be an election for anything and everything over the coming months. We can vote for the new Police & Crime Commissioner, members of the Gloucester City Council and the long awaited EU Referendum (all this talk of In/Out does bring to mind the old children's song the Hokey Cokey!). As a local vicar I meet some of these candidates on a regular basis and it is impressive to see so many local people standing for election to serve their ward or community. I have the utmost respect for those who feel called to make a difference. As a young student I still recall casting my first ever vote, giving my name, stepping into the polling booth and then the moment of casting a vote. As a young man and to this day I sometimes expect a camera flash as my vote drops into the box but apparently that's just for the powerful and famous. My heartfelt conviction is that democracy is vital and we should cast our vote whenever invited. The freedom to vote and the cost of achieving that vote means it is too great to be ignored or forgotten. Whoever you vote for I hope you will feel inspired to use your vote and maybe even to stand for office or to serve the community. Revd Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James Church, Larkhay Road.'

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild's most recent speaker was Sean McCormack, who gave a very entertaining insight into the life of a member of the Queen's Bodyguard of the Yeoman of the Guard. This role was created in the 1400s to protect Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth Field, it's purpose was "to support the Crown in perpetuity". That role remains unchanged today, and the current strength of 82 Yeomen are drawn from the Army, the RAF and - in more recent years - the Royal Navy. Their uniform is unchanged, and it was interesting to see the items of uniform up close, when we can normally only see them when watching Royal events on television. Sean was a very entertaining speaker, and painted a very vivid picture of his life as a Yeoman of the Guard. Diary dates for the forthcoming months include a trip to the St John's Players, the St George's Day Service at Gloucester Cathedral, the Queen's 90th Birthday Lunch, the annual skittles match, and annual Quiz. The new programme of speakers was announced, including "Hanging Baskets", and "Memories and Monologues" in May and June. The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm on the third Thursday each month. There are speakers covering a wide range of topics, followed by tea, coffee and biscuits, and the opportunity to chat and socialise. Visitors and new members are always welcome; phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along!
