A bit about

The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link

3

Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the May edition of your Hucclecote Link. Well at last it is starting to feel like a bit of normality is now returning. Many adults have now had at least one vaccine, with many of the over 70’s already having had 2 in our areas. Retail is opening up again, and that is great news for many of our local businesses. Beauty salons, hairdressers and leisure centres have all started to open their doors again and I’m sure we can’t wait to get back and support them. How many of you feel better now you’ve had a hair cut?! We have a few beauty salons that advertise with us and they would love to have your support, you can find them all on our index page, page 22. Fingers crossed, it the covid numbers keep dropping, then eating inside restaurants will be allowed later on this month, as we all know the British weather can be unpredictable, so as much as it has been great to go to the pub, it has been rather weather dependant! Covid 19 will still be part of our lives for a while though, and so if you are concerned about how clean the air is where you work, whether at home or in the office, then why not look at the page opposite and think about purchasing a Clean Air Unit to help give protection to your work space. Please do keep on supporting our local Businesses, and if you know of a business might be interested in advertising with us do get in touch, as the advert above, there may be a £20 voucher in it for you. Have a great month but please all continue to take care and keep safe Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Changing a lock

There are a number of reasons why you may need to change the locks at home. Maybe you have lost your keys. The easiest lock to change is what is commonly called the Yale lock. This lock is actually called a night latch and the whole assembly does not need to be changed as the internal working latch, barrel or cylinder, can be changed independently of the rest of the mechanism. This allows you to use a new key that after all is the usual purpose of changing locks At the back of the door you will see the lock box. This is held on by two screws, which are located above and below the actual door latch. Release these screws completely and put them somewhere safe. You will then be able to wiggle off the lock box. When the lock box is removed you will see the locks back plate. This is the plate that holds the whole lot to the door. Sticking out of the back plate you will see a thin bar with grooves across its width. This is called the shank. Above the shank and to either side of it are two screw heads, which hold the barrel or cylinder to the back plate. Unscrew these and put them with the lock box screws. You should then be able to pull the barrel or cylinder out of the door. Take a new barrel or cylinder and lay it alongside the one you have just taken out. Measure the length of the shank and using a strong pair of pliers and a hacksaw, cut the new shank to the same length as the old. The grooves that are already partially cut in the shank are there to help you. When you have sawn a little way through the shank you should be able to bend it downwards to allow the shank to split in the correct place. Re assembling the lock is now a direct reversal of the procedure you used to dismantle it. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD With the end of lockdown now within sight, plans are being made for future meetings of the Guild. We hope to meet for the first time on Thursday 15th July, at 7.30pm at the Hucclecote Community Centre. This will be an informal meeting to catch up , and there will be a brief AGM. A Bowling session and afternoon tea is booked for August, and from September, monthly evening meetings will continue as normal. HUCCLECOTE LARKHAY WI We are all very excited that we will have our first meeting in July as long as government guidelines do not change. We are looking forward to catching up with everyone in person, having tea and chatting, which we are very good at. In the meantime we are having our weekly zoom meetings (although they are good) it is not the same. Everything else is starting to open although very slowly, the shops, coffee shops and most importantly the hairdressers. We have speakers planned for this year, and our coffee morning and strawberry tea afternoon is all pencilled in, as long as guidelines do not change. The vaccine programme is well underway and we all look forward to the return to normality. As the days get longer we look forward to Spring, and being able to enjoy our gardens in the sunshine. We meet on the second Thursday of the month in the Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm. In the meantime keep safe and well. Please phone Betty on 698299 for more information on the WI

Hucclecote Garden Club Following our AGM and various Zoom Committee meetings, we have decided to re-start our Gardening Club on the fourth Thursday of July, 22nd July. Our Speaker for the evening is Mr. Robert Bryant whom we welcome back to Hucclecote. The title of Robert's talk is 'The Natural World of Gloucestershire' which takes a closer look at flowers, insects, fungi and birds that can be found in our gardens and Gloucestershire countryside. Our Annual Show which takes place in August, will be a lower-key affair with Members bringing along the fruits of their garden, in the form of flowers, veg, salad crops, jams, more of a shared experience of' Lock-down in the Garden', than a fully fledged Horticultural Show! May is one of the most beautiful months in the garden with trees in new leaf, butterflies in the garden, poppies waiting to burst into flower, wisteria showing its haze of purple blooms. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is usually held in May, but this year will be held in September. The Malvern Spring Show also happens in May, but we await details of its new opening dates. We look forward to welcoming back our regular Members and to meeting any new aspiring gardeners who would like to come along to learn a bit more and have a friendly chat with some of our more experienced gardeners. We meet at the Community Centre on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7.30pm. For more advertise callon 01452 621496 informationTo please ring Joy 553185 or Sue on 543573.
