A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,

3

Welcome to the November edition of your Hucclecote Link. The clocks have now gone back and with those darker mornings and evenings now upon us, it is definitely starting to feel as though Winter is round the corner. I do love this time of year though, the changes of colour to all the trees, the fresh, crisp mornings (when it’s not raining!!), and then putting the heating on in the evenings and snuggling down to a good old film, with a blanket and a hot chocolate!! For us, it’s the month of calm before the December and Christmas mayhem sets in!! Yes, Christmas is not that far away now. So if you are looking to plan a great night out to celebrate this Christmas, look no further than Hatton Court, on the front cover, they run some great party nights (I can say that from experience!) but book quickly to reserve your space. Also why not get ahead of the game this year and start your Christmas shopping. Body Flair, on page 22, have a great offer on their gift vouchers, buy one and get one for yourself. Now who doesn't like a little pampering in the run up to the festive season! There are also lots of local Christmas markets and festivals taking place in November– have a look on page 28 & 29 for more details on when and where they are being held. St Lawrence church in Barnwood kick it off with their annual Autmn Fayre on Sat 7th November. Last month we celebrated 10 years of the Abbey-Link! I can’t quite believe that we have been publishing local directories for that long, but I feel very proud of how far we have come. A lot of our success is down to our local businesses that advertise with us, our distributors who get the directories through your doors, and to you the readers, who pick up the phone and use the businesses in the directories. A big thankyou to you all. As a way of celebrating, we have an offer for local businesses to promote their Christmas events across all 3 of our directories in December, more details are on page 24. The winner of this months Sudoku competition is , Julia Pollington Cineworld tickets will be on their way to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 31. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month Sarah. Dave’s top tips

Using Wall plugs Many types of wall plugs exist and new designs are being brought out all of the time. Make sure that you use the correct drill and the correct screw or else the fixing will not work. Wall plugs should not be used in hollow plasterboard walls as other fixings are available for this. Mark the length of the plug on the drill using some tape. If you are drilling through a wall that has old plaster that is likely to flake then it is best of you drill a little deeper and ensure that the plug is pushed through the plaster and into the masonry behind, so that the plaster does not crack when the screw is tightened. Before drilling a hole into a wall you must ensure that no services such as pipes or cables are running where you intend to drill. When drilling through plaster into masonry it is best if you do not use hammer action until you hit the masonry. If you try to drill the plaster using hammer action you could damage the plaster and could drill the hole in the wrong place. When you reach the desired depth you can remove the drill from the hole. Insert the correct size wall plug and tap it home with a hammer. Remember if the plaster is likely to flake tap the plug further into the brickwork so as to prevent flaking when the plug expands. Finally insert the correct size screw and tighten up. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Good Endings

This might seem like an odd thing for a vicar to write about in a community magazine but only this week I was alerted to a piece of national research highlighting the sharp rise in the cost of a funeral in the UK. According to the report the cost of a funeral has risen by 80% during the last decade. That means on average a funeral will cost approximately £3500. At a time of austerity when we are constantly reminded of cuts and budgets it may come as an unwelcome surprise to discover that the end of our life will also carry a substantial cost. I wonder how often we think about these things as we manage the other demands of life. One of the great privileges of church ministry is leading lots of funerals for local people throughout the year. Each service is slightly different as it is created and tailored for the person and their family. On Sunday 29th November at 5pm we will host our annual Memorial Service at the church that is an opportunity to remember someone we have lost, to say some prayers and to light a candle in memory. Anyone is welcome to attend and you don't have to have lost someone recently. We would be delighted to welcome you. Rev. Andrew Axon - St Philip & St James Church Hucclecote.

The 2015 Christmas Candlelit Market St Philip and St James Church in Larkhay Rd, Hucclecote, on Sat Nov 14th from 4.30 –6.30pm. There will be a fantastic Santa’s Grotto and many stalls selling just about everything from jewellery, jams, toiletries, Christmas cards and decorations, toys, puzzles etc. A windband will serenade you with carols and your tastebuds will be tickled with mulled wine, mincepies, burgers and pancakes! A raffle and hot drinks and cake round off your visit nicely. Do come, it always lights up a dark month and is a great way to start the countdown to Christmas! Please mention

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMEN GUILD

The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. We have a variety of speakers covering a wide range of subjects, followed by tea, coffee and biscuits and most importantly, a chance to chat and socialise. Topics of our forthcoming meetings include "Land Girls" by Fiona Warin, and "Garden Lore" by Pam Slater. The Inter-Guild Quiz and photographic competition is coming up soon, following by a trip to the St John's Players in Churchdown, and the Christmas shopping trip to Cardiff. Our most recent speaker was Chris Evans, who told us about "The Butterfly Garden", an educational gardening and land skills project, open to students with learning difficulties, disabilities, and/or behavioural problems. Attached to Dundry Nurseries at Bamfurlong Lane, what was two acres of virtual wilderness now boasts a classroom, wildlife and ornamental gardens, fruit trees, vegetable gardens and cows, chickens and ducks. The garden is worked by over 60 students per week, who gain skills, confidence and social skills during their time there. Chris's enthusiasm for his subject made for an absorbing talk. Visitors are always welcome at Guild meetings. Just come along, or ring Linda on Gloucester 617701 for more details.

Hucclecote Horticultural Club September saw us thoroughly entertained by a real Griff Rhys Jones sound-alike, Duncan Coombs, who took us on an amusing journey through Barks, Stems and Evergreens – a lesson in how you can keep your garden looking colourful during Autumn and Winter. A really good evening – with new comfortable chairs at the Community Centre too! On 26th November we have a couple of local ladies getting us into the festive spirit with Dawn Pearman showing us how to make Christmas door garlands, and member Anne Green demonstrating how to make seasonal table decorations. I think that I may need to take my wife along to that one as my talent for that sort of thing is sadly lacking I am afraid. We have no meeting in December, but make sure that you put 28th January in your diary right now as we have a speaker from Colesbourne Park who will be taking us through the delights of and the secrets behind the magnificent display of snowdrops that the Park puts on each year. If you have not been to see the snowdrops yet, then they are not to be missed. And get your preview with us in January! Why not join us one evening, and find out more about us, as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, on the 4th Thursday of the month, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm start. All are welcome, there’s no need to be from Hucclecote, nor to be an expert gardener – I am most definitely not! More information from Sue on 543573 or Joy on 553185. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Scout News

33

The Father and Sons/daughters camp was a great success with over 800 in camp. After running it for 35 years Terry handed over to Chris and Paul who did a splendid job. The bag packing at Sainsburys went well with the Scouts earning over ÂŁ600.00 which is a big help in keeping the Group going even though all leaders are volunteers. With an indoor assault course and invisible writing session which led to various projects Scout meetings have made a good start to the new Scouting year. Very pleased to have invested six boys and girls into the Scouts from the Cubs and outside the movement. The Cubs and Scouts will march with the Boys Brigade and the British Legion on Remembrance Day to the War Memorial on the corner of Green lane. Plans for next years summer camp the first week of the summer holidays is in hand. Although we would normally go to Newquay, where we have gone every four years since 1996 the owner is selling the cottage and field where we camp so will probably go to Ferney Croft Scout camp on the Dorset Hampshire Border. With many activities on site and a visit to Brownsea Island (where the first Scout camp was held) it should still be a good experience for new Scouts. Boys and Girls age 6 to 8 are welcome to join Beavers and 8 to 10 Cubs with Scouts following on up to age of 14 when they join the Explorers. Please phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

Hucclecote Larkhay WI Our meeting got off to a very good start with the illustrated history of Mr Punch, our speakers were Diana Humphrey and Fred Ward. We went through the different stages of Mr Punch from his first beginnings to the present day and many things have changed, not least with Judy and all the other characters that we find so endearing. Mr Punch has been going for over 350 years and is still going strong today. It was a lovely evening enjoyed by all. We have speakers most months on various topics. We have meals out, theatre trips and friendly skittles. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Jan on 01452 698299 / or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just come along, we look forward to seeing you.
