Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the November edition of your Hucclecote Link. Last month we were celebrating publishing The Link Directories for 13 years. We started out with just the Abbey-Link going to 2500 homes and now we publish the Abbey-Link, Hucclecote Link and Tuffley Link directories and distribute to 16,500 homes. We think this is a great achievement and would like to take the opportunity to say a huge ’Thank you’ to all our readers, advertisers and distributors for helping us achieve this mile stone. I’m sorry, but Christmas is now just around the corner, so if you are the one that organises the Christmas parties, perhaps you can find what you are looking for in the Hucclecote Link.. With Hatton Court on the front cover and Bowden Hall on page 14, both advertising their festive party nights, make sure you reserve your space quick so you don’t miss out. Local churches are also holding Christmas fayres this month, so if you are looking to make a start on that shopping - read more detail on pages 30 & 31. The Huccelcote Community Association, are also advertising a range of events taking place throughout December & January, have a look at their advert on page 21 for more information. We also have the new local Co-Operative, on Barnwood Road, advertising their local offers with us this month, see their advert opposite for more details. Congratulations to Mr P Hammond for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. Have a great month .... Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Removing wall tiles Removing wall tiles can be an arduous task depending on the original adhesive used. Before you start ensure that any sanitary ware is protected from scratching from falling tiles. Using a bolster line it up to the edge of the tile at an angle as close to the wall as possible and strike it with a hammer. You will probably find the first few tiles to be the hardest to remove. If standard adhesive was originally used the tiles should come away fairly easily from a solid wall, any excess adhesive stuck to the wall should be removed with a scraper. If the wall is made of plasterboard be prepared to have to re-board the wall as the adhesive may well damage the wall. In some cases it is just easier to rip down the plasterboard and renew it. Work your way around the tiles chipping from the edges until all the tiles are removed. Bear in mind small fragments will fly off so gloves and safety glasses are a must. If the tiles were originally fitted with a cement-based adhesive, then be prepared to spend a lot of time to remove them, and probably allow to replaster the walls afterwards. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Scout News As mentioned in the last News Letter, the weekend at Chranham for all units with their Mums and Dads went well. With good weather (weekend before and after very wet, so we were lucky), all the activities went well. Terry was presented with a certificate for 60 years as leader and a very nice stand with three inch tent pegs forming a tripod and varnished, it was greatly appreciated. The first camp was 40 years ago with three patrols, eight at this camp. At Scout meetings a camp fire outside run by the Patrol leaders and small projects inside having to warm sheets of paper for invisible writing to show what to do. The group will be marching to the war memorial in Green Lane on Armistice Sunday. The Scouts and Explorer Scouts will have their Summer camp in the Lake District next year. It is a proper Scout camp near lake Windermere. All boys and girls are welcome to join the group - 6 to 8 for Beavers - 8 to 10 Cubs 10 to 14 Scouts - Phone Terry on 521664 for more details. ————————Hucclecote Scout Group are pleased to welcome Buttons Playgroup to our premises at Deer Park Road. The playgroup operates between 9am to 3pm weekdays during term times. Further information can be obtained by calling Terrie on 07484 731240.
Hucclecote Garden Club Our October speaker, Pat Hutley, gave us a most interesting talk on 'Poisonous Plants in the Garden'. I think most gardeners are aware of the dangers posed by plants such as Foxgloves, Euphorbia, and some Poppies, but it was quite an eye-opener how many of the plants we do grow can potentially be harmful. Plants coming under the category 'potentially harmful to people' are safe to grow provided they are treated with respect, and wearing gloves and covering your skin can avoid contamination. Our Members Evening this month will be coming up shortly. We had a great time last year and hope to repeat the fun of the evening. We will be making Christmas Table Decorations, Christmas Tree Decorations, entertainment will be provided by one of our musical Committee members, we will be having a Photography Competition, with a festive theme, and consuming some home-made mincepies. We do not meet in December, but look forward to some great talks on Japanese Gardens, The Great Glasshouse at Wisley, Orchids and The Curious History of Vegetables in 2019, our 10th Anniversary year. Do come along and join us on the fourth Thursday of the month at Hucclecote Community Centre, 7.30pm. Details from Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. To advertise call 01452 890242

At the monthly meetings, we have a demonstration or speaker covering a wide range of interests and subjects, the sales table, a raffle, refreshments, and the opportunity to chat! Our most recent speaker was John Butterworth, who told us of his trek overland with seven others, to deliver a Land Rover to a leprosy hospital in Nepal. Forthcoming speakers include Mandy Marshall from The Churchdown Chutney Company, and Carolyn Sheldrick on "Medicinal Herbs in your Garden". Other events coming up are the Coffee Morning to raise funds for our chosen charity, "Gloucester Young Carers"; the annual inter-Guild Quiz; the next Lunch Club, the Christmas Shopping trip to Worcester, and the New Year's Lunch.
