A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the November edition of your Hucclecote Link. As you receive this edition of the Link, it will be the time of year that the clocks go back again. This means that the Winter is setting in, with those dark mornings and evenings now upon us, and most of us starting to put the heating back on again. Although with the talk on the news of the gas and electric prices going up again, perhaps this is the time to check that your boiler and your central heating is all in good working order. We have a number of great plumbing and heating companies within the directory, check out our index for further info. The festive period is just around the corner, if you are still looking to book your Christmas event, Hatton Court still have some availability for their tribute nights, these are great fun and more details are on the front cover. If you are looking for an early celebration, Sebz have a great offer of 20% off a meal during November - just take the advert in with you, this can be found on page 19. If you have a business that’s holding a promotion or event over the Christmas period, and would like to advertise it in our December edition, give me a call and we can chat about our competitive rates and how we can help… This month we have also introduced a new editorial by a local Hypnotherapist, who would be willing to answer your questions on a monthly basis….read more on page 28. Remember our Sudoku competition on page 27, enter and you could be in with a chance to win 2 tickets to the local Cineworld. Congratulations to Joel Merrick the winner of this months Cineworld tickets. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month….. Dave’s top tips Filling a hole in hollow walls To repair a hole in a hollow door, wall, or ceiling, trim the edge of the hole and prepare a piece of timber or plasterboard. Cut the new piece the same width as the widest part of the hole and a little longer than the height of the hole. Insert a screw just a couple of threads into the middle of the piece, to enable you to pick up the piece and maneuver it. Go around the edge with some heavy duty adhesive, and, using the screw, push the piece into the hole. Once you have it all the way in, pull back on the screw so the adhesive touches the back of the hole surround. Use gentle pulling pressure, while moving around slightly to ensure good contact between the adhesive and the back of the surface, until you are sure the adhesive will hold the piece in place at which time you can remove the screw. Leave for 24 hours and the hole can then be filled with filler suitable for the surface you are repairing. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Community Centre to Launch Hucclecote PlayWorld In Hucclecote we are very well served by a wide variety of shops, services and businesses, there is hardly a need to venture into the City. We are also very fortunate to have the Hucclecote Community Centre offering many leisure and educational opportunities at the heart of the community, next to the library. Hucclecote Community Centre is gearing up for the busy pre-Christmas season with a series of events planned and some exciting new developments. Prime among these is the inauguration of Hucclecote PlayWorld, which will provide a soft play facility in the Community Centre Hall on Monday and Tuesday mornings for the Under 5s. With sessions priced inexpensively at only £2, this will start in November and is already provoking much interest – watch out for full details. The existing Nippers Parent & Toddler group will move to Thursdays but will still provide a homely and personal environment for young children as well. Teapots Coffee Shop is open to the general public for refreshments each weekday morning, and the Social Club is now also able to serve non-members when the bar is open during weekday evenings and at weekends. The BT sports channels are available in the Centre and visitors are welcome to watch the football and rugby. In the run-up to Christmas there will be a coach trip to London for shopping and sightseeing on Saturday 16 November, The Craft Cafe, with crafts and gifts, also on Sat 16 Nov (10am-3pm), a concert by Ian Oliver (of the Shy Teds) on Sat evening 23 Nov , a Family Fun afternoon with Magic Fillipo on Sat 30 Nov (35pm), a Christmas Party, with disco and buffet, for groups from local businesses or voluntary organisations on Sat evening 7December, a Children’s Christmas Party on Sun 22 Dec, musical entertainment on Christmas Eve, and a Family Disco on New Year’s Eve. Looking further ahead – a Take That Tribute Band on Sat 8 February! Call in to the Community Centre (same building as Hucclecote Library) to find out about membership, and about all these events. The Hall is also available for booking for your parties, anniversaries, etc. at weekends, and this will be free of charge on weekend evenings in 2014. HYPNOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING. How do you imagine a Hypnotherapist or Counsellor to be? Do you think they swing a watch or pendant in front of you, and maybe say, “Look into my eyes, look into my eyes”? Actually, you are wrong on both counts. So what does actually happen when you go to see a Hypnotherapist? Well, first of all, you will sit comfortably in a soft leather armchair. Cushions and blankets are available for those that suffer with bad backs or aching limbs. Then you are assured that whatever your problem may be, it will be dealt with in a calm relaxed manner, with the reassurance, most importantly, that whatever you need to talk about, there will be total confidentiality. Next, a health questionnaire will be carried out. This often proves to be most beneficial. Sometimes an appointment with your GP will be recommended. You will never be advised to stop medication by the therapist. That is between you and your doctor. During these conversations, I help to put the person at their ease, in a gentle relaxed homely atmosphere. There is never any pressure on the patient to do anything against their will. After we have discussed the problem, suggestions and ideas may be made, but it is up to each individual to decide which they want to try. Any stress that the person is suffering with, will also be discussed and hopefully advised how to deal with it. Hypnotherapy is a gentle, relaxed way of dealing with any of life’s problems, and in the right hands, it is extremely safe. I qualified in 1994, having trained with the excellent Ursula Markham, who has written many books on Hypnotherapy. I see clients here in my own home in Hucclecote. If you wish to know further details do contact me on Glos: 01452 614115. Or email me at: rachael@hypnohelp4u.co.uk I shall be writing articles each month, so with confidentiality guaranteed, please feel free to ask any questions and these will be printed each month.

Love

As a young vicar in Nottinghamshire I had the bizarre privilege of watching the new vicarage being built in the church grounds. For several weeks they cleared the ground, marked out the site and then for what seemed like months started to dig out the foundations. A week or so later, the foundations were filled in with concrete and the ground floor was established. In just a few more weeks a house appeared on the site as walls and a roof, windows and doors completed our new family home. I asked the builder why the foundations take so long to be built and with a look that said ‘you stupid vicar!’ he explained the necessity of firm foundations. One of the foundations I have built my life upon is the truth that I cannot earn God’s love. Before I do or say anything, God loves me. There is nothing I can to do or say that will make God love me more or less. He loves me. This is not a boastful claim but a promise from God. It motivates me, reassures me, and encourages me. I hope and pray it might bring you some peace in the situations you face. No matter who you are – God loves you. A love that is unconditional, a love that is everlasting, what an amazing thought! A favourite snippet of Scripture “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19)

Revd Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James, Larkhay Road’

Hucclecote Horticultural Society Our September meeting was one of our popular Members’ evenings, and produced a huge number of plants and seeds for the swop table. I came away with a fuchsia and a hydrangea in exchange for my Sweet Williams and strawberries: roll on the next swop evening! We have been looking at other societies’ produce and flower shows to see what classes they offer, to get some fresh ideas for next year’s show. How they got the 12 foot sunflower into the hall at Randwick in one piece I will never know – but it is an idea for next year. Our gentlemen members seem to want more cake classes – I’m not sure why. Thursday 28th November sees our last meeting of the year, when we go for something more exotic with Tom Price talking to us about Orchids. I know that a lot of our members are keen orchid growers, and this evening should prove a most interesting one for both them, and people like myself who have to keep our hands well away from anything so delicate. If you too are an orchid fan then why not join us for the evening – as a guest you can come along to one meeting free of charge this year so why not find out a bit more about orchids. January 23rd sees our own Jan Broadway telling us all about the exploits and successes of Francis Masson, whose plant hunting expeditions took him all over South Africa. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, no need to be an expert. More information from Chris on 610694. The Father and Sons/Daughters camp at Cranham was a great success with everyone dressing up for the Carnival and making a decorated float. All the stalls (which were free to have a go on) worked well and kept all the children busy winning sweets. I think it will be a fixture for the future camps. We welcomed the new cubs into Scouts and with more due by March the Scout unit will be getting very full again after the 10 Scouts moved to Explorers. Details of next years summer camp in Yorkshire are now being made for the first week of the summer holidays. We have visited the official Scout camp at Bradley Wood several times over the years it is lightly wooded with plenty of space between groups. On site they have archery rifle shooting assault course and climbing tower with an indoor swimming pool. When not doing activities we will be visiting the National coal mine York and a walk on Ilkley Moor (where the song comes from) As always we cook in patrols (with a Scouter eating with them) on open fires with even the new Scouts doing some cooking. The older Scouts did a short walk in the wood near Birdlip and built a rope commando bridge across one of the large gullies ending up with hot dogs and sleep over at the H.Q. We always welcome anyone who can spare the time to help run any of the units it is a commitment, an extra hand at meetings is a great help or be on list that you are willing to help on special events. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you would like more details without committing yourself or if you have children who are interested in joining the group.

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild Almost a full complement of T G members attended the September meeting to hear Mrs Mary Stokes, who has worked at Holland & Barrett for about 19 years, talk to us about “Natural Remedies “ At the beginning of her talk, Mrs Stokes stressed to us the importance of checking with the GP before taking any Natural Remedies, if already taking prescription medicines regularly from the GP. She also explained about the initial training assistants receive, and that there is ongoing training about new products in all the stores. It was fascinating and informative to hear about the appropriate natural remedies for various conditions, from skin problems,-burns, sunburn, eczema etc.-sleep problems, joint pain , cramp, coughs and so on, even to the use of snail gel as an anti wrinkle cream, which caused great consternation in the room – until we heard it could be used for healing wounds as well !!! The evening finished with a question and answer session. The November meeting of Hucclecote TG will take place at Hucclecote Community Centre on Thursday 21st November at 7-30pm, when Mrs Sue Trevaskis of “Colour Me Beautiful” will hopefully give us some advice to help us move forward in the “beauty stakes “! All members and visitors are very welcome to attend. We have a few events to look forward to in the run up to Christmas; Thursday 28th November will be our Christmas shopping day trip to Cardiff by coach which is open to Guild members, friends and family ;one of our members is holding a coffee morning on Weds. 13th Nov., proceeds for our Charity, and our Christmas Social evening in lieu of the usual Guild meeting takes place on Thursday Dec.5th at the Community Centre.
