A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the November edition of your Hucclecote Link. When you receive this directory the clocks will have just gone back , a sign that winter is now on its way. With the darker mornings and evenings creeping up on us I wonder how many of you have already put your heating on? If you need to get your boiler checked before the Winter kicks in we have plenty of plumbers with some great offers - see our index on page 26 It can be hard to know what to do with the children after school when the Winter months are here, why not try Birds of Feather Youth Theatre who are based at Abbeydale Community Centre, more details on page 21. I do also need to mention the ’C’ word. Yes it’s not long now until our thoughts are turning towards Christmas. Why not get ahead of the game this year and make the most of the early bird voucher offers that BodyFlair (Front Cover) are offering, but be quick there are only 10 of each available and you need to purchase them before 1st December in order to get the free voucher for yourself too. If you have a business that has a Christmas offer or promotion and you would like us to Link you to the local residents in December, please just give me a call. Have a great month Sarah. Dave’s top ps Common faults with paintwork Blistering: Almost always caused by moisture in the mber that may have been painted over without drying properly. The moisture tries to evaporate but cannot get through the paint. The paint will eventually crack and peel allowing more moisture in etc. Window cills are very prone to these blisters some mes because the end of them have not been prepared properly allowing the moisture in. This fault o en occurs on metal surfaces as well. This is due to the surface not being properly prepared before pain ng, including rust removal and the use of a primer. The interac on between two different metal surfaces can cause "electroly c corrosion" which may also lead to blistering. Cracking: Some mes called "checking" or "Aligatoring" This usually happens in regular cracking pa&erns on the surface of the paint. Applying the top coat of paint before the one beneath it is completely dry will cause this as both coats drying at a different rate will cause shrinkage. Peeling: If areas of paint can be easily peeled off it is mostly due to a contaminated surface or the use of the wrong (or no) primer. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top ps along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the inves ga ng for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rec fied so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild
46 members and two visitors attended the September meeting, when our speaker was Rotary Club representative Dave Fennick, who spoke about "Shelter Box" disaster relief. Shelter Box originated in Cornwall in 2000, and was initiated by the Royal Navy Search and Rescue Team there to add to the range of food/water/medicine already provided by other agencies and charities to areas devastated by natual disasters. A "Shelter Box" contains (nearly) everything a whole family would need when they have been left with nothing following floods, typhoons, hurricanes, a tsunami, and includes a family-sized tent, water filtration system, tools, mosquito net, blankets, cooking vessels, plates - even a stove. The number of such boxes provided increases every year, rising from 2,600 sent during the first four years, to 22,000 sent following the Boxing Day tsunami. Areas provided with Shelter Boxes include Haiti, the Philippines, Pakistan and Mexico, and in Haiti, some of the tents are still in use. The Met Office is a major sponsor of Shelter Box, and Young Shelter Box has links with the Scouts, and the Head Teachers' Association. Hucclecote Townswomens Guild meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday of each month at 7.30pm. You are welcome to join us for speakers covering a wide range of interests and topics, tea and coffee, outings and social events. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information - or just come along!
Hucclecote Horticultural Society At the most recent meeting that I can tell you about we listened agog as John from the Hedgehog rescue centre in Brimscombe regaled us with stories about hedgehogs, their lifestyles and how we can encourage them into our gardens. The rescue centre is a tremendous asset – John said that on one day last winter they were caring for no less than 174 hedgehogs.....I am not sure that I have seen that many in the whole of my life. And no, you should not put out bread and milk for hedgehogs – it is not good for them Our next meeting is on November 27th when we are holding a Members’ evening. If this follows our traditional format we will have a seed and plant swap, a quiz and a limerick competition, as well as plenty of opportunities to chat and to ask questions of other members. Some of the tips that I have picked up on previous occasions have proved really useful. Some of the tales of other people’s successes have made me just a little jealous though. December will be a blank month for us – something called Christmas seems to push our meeting out that month every year, but watch this space for information on our January and subsequent meetings. An update on my own allotment produce. The largest potato – an Amour main crop – weighed in at an amazing 2lbs exactly, though sad to say it seemed to have succumbed to something nasty when it was cut up for pealing. And a squash at 9 lbs 12oz. Not bad! Why not join us one evening, [including the Members’ evening] find out more about us as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, absolutely no need to To advertise call 01452 890242 be an expert gardener – I’m not! More information from Chris on 610694.
