A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,

3

Welcome to the October edition of your Hucclecote Link. Autumn is certainly here, and the new academic year is now well under way. The new term always brings many trials and tribulations, (we seem to experience many within our own household!) I do hope your children are all settling in now, whether they have started their first days at primary school, or have flown the nest to start uni. If they are off to uni, perhaps you are suffering with empty nest syndrome… f so perhaps it’s time to start to try something new… As well as many great businesses advertising in the Hucclecote Link, we have some great local clubs advertising too. Whether its joining various WI groups, the Townswomen Guild, or having a look at what the Hucclecote Community centre can offer - see the opposite page for some great nights out over the coming months, or become involved with Tuesday at Two or try your hand at Scottish Dancing, there are many clubs out there for you to try, see more details on pages 28,29, 32 & 33 and take the first step of trying something new. It may also be a time of new beginnings if you are expecting a new born in the coming months, Simple Beginnings, on page 23, can help you with its natural therapies, at every step of your journey, from pregnancy through to parenting. As much as I hate to say it this early, but yes, Christmas is not that far away now. So if you are looking to plan a great night out to celebrate this Christmas, look no further than Hatton Court, on the front cover, they run some great party nights (I can say that from experience!) but book quickly to reserve your space. Talking of celebrations, we are celebrating 10 years of the Abbey-Link this month! I can’t quite believe that we have been publishing local directories for that long, but I feel very proud of how far we have come. A lot of our success is down to our local businesses that advertise with us, our distributors who get the directories through your doors, and to you the readers, who pick up the phone and use the businesses in the directories. A big thankyou to you all. As a way of celebrating, we have an offer for local businesses if they are thinking of advertising with us, more details are on page 26. The winner of this months Sudoku competition is Catharine Cooke, Cineworld tickets will be on their way to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 31. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month Sarah.

Daves Top Tips Preparing for autumn Preparing for the cold weather should be done now and your boiler, or other heating systems should be serviced (By a competent, registered person). Do not wait for cold weather to find out that something is not working properly as you may well find it a long cold wait trying to get it repaired. If you have a feed and expansion tank in the loft, make sure its working well by moving the float arm up and down a couple of times to make sure the valve lets in, and shuts off, the water. While you are in the loft, make sure you have at least 270mm of loft insulation and it is laid away from the roof eaves to let in air for loft ventilation. Check pipework in the loft is insulated and all stopcocks and gate valves (this applies to the whole house) are working properly by turning them off then back on again. Check all door and window draught proofing, including the letterbox and rectify as required. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

World in Union As a younger person I remember hearing for the first time the now iconic Rugby Union song World in Union. This hymn like anthem now echoes around arenas and TV broadcasts from the first whistle of the Rugby World Cup to the final victorious conversion try. Whether you are a fan of rugby or not lots of attention is being focused on that patch of grass and rugby posts in Kingsholm and on similar pitches around the UK. At the same time as the Rugby World Cup our national attention is also being drawn to the plight of Syrian refugees, migration camps at Calais and across Europe and the forgotten news headlines of yesteryear that are still being lived out at home and overseas. We seem evermore drawn into being a world living in union and harmony together. That beautiful song World in Union is a rousing call to be the best that we can be as individuals and to pull together in unity. I am drawn by one particular verse or phrase "We face high mountains, must cross rough seas. We must take our place in history and live with dignity". What might that look like in our homes and families, across the communities of Hucclecote and Gloucester, in the United Kingdom and from Europe to the nations of the world? Maybe in 2015 we should pledge to truly live in a World in Union, but it starts in our own homes and in our local community. Revd. Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James Church, Hucclecote’

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMEN GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday of each month, at 7.30pm. We have a variety of speakers covering a wide range of subjects, followed by tea, coffee and biscuits, and most importantly, a chance to chat and socialise. The Summer Fashion Show was a sell-out, and was a great evening. Outfits from Bonmarche were showcased, drawn from their Summer and Autumn ranges, and for those who didn't already know it! - showed what a wide range of styles are available. As well as enjoying drinks and nibbles after the show, we were able to try on and purchase from the wide selection of items which had been brought along. Topics of our Speakers for forthcoming meetings include "Land Girls" by Fiona Warin, and "Garden Lore" by Pam Slater. The Inter-Guild Quiz and Photographic Competition is still ahead of us, and the Rambling Group continue to meet regularly. Ring Linda on 01452 617701 for more information, or just come along to our next meeting. You would be made very welcome.

Hucclecote Horticultural Club Our annual show took place in August, and all members felt it was the best one so far. Obviously we have been listening to some of the useful tips that our judge, Rob Champion, has been giving us over the years! The prize for the biggest Russian tomato went to Reg, the chap who gave us the tomato plants to start with. There is clearly some secret method that he didn’t tell us. His magnificent prize was, quite fittingly, a bottle of Heinz tomato ketchup. Our 22nd October meeting is another ‘different’ one. We will be entertaining a Forest of Dean tour guide who will be telling us ‘spooky tales from the Forest of Dean.’ I’m guessing that there will be plenty of tales about odd happenings down the mines and amongst the trees. Then on 26th November we have a couple of local ladies getting us into the festive spirit with Dawn Pearman showing us how to make Christmas door garlands, and member Anne Green demonstrating how to make seasonal table decorations. I think that I may need to take my wife along to that one as my eye for that kind of thing is firmly closed I am afraid. Why not join us one evening, and find out more about us, as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, on the 4th Thursday of the month, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm start. All are welcome, there’s no need to be from Hucclecote, nor to be an expert gardener – I am most definitely not! More information from Sue on 543573 or Joy on 553185.

Hucclecote Scout News

33

Scouts started back in September with making toffee apples, pleased to say no teeth were lost which has happened before. We also built a large pioneer bridge which all the Scouts went over before it got too dark. By the time you read this we will have had the annual Fathers/Mothers camp at Cranham, more details next time. Sainsburys are very kindly letting us do bag packing on Saturday 3rd October, we get no grants from anybody and all Leaders and helpers are volunteers so the money we earn is a great help in keeping the group going. On the 17th October the Scouts will be doing a Community morning at the Hucclecote Parish Council at Pineholt, helping to keep it clean and tidy. A trip to Go Karting and Lazar tag is planned for November, with the Halloween sing song and fireworks on Saturday 31st October at 6.30 at the H.Q. Any children from 6 to 14 welcome to join the group (we have 3 age groups) phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

Hucclecote Larkhay WI Our September meeting got off to a very good start with our speaker Angela Hugman a physiotherapist. She spoke about her work and the many places she had been and the adventures that happened along the way, all funny and amusing. It was enjoyed by all. At our next meeting we have a complete change and may well need a physiotherapist, the talk is about the history of Mr Punch? We have different speakers on various subjects. Other things happening through this year include meals out, friendly skittles and coffee mornings. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Jan on 01452 698299 / or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just come along, we look forward to seeing you.
