A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the October edition of your Hucclecote Link. The new academic year is now well under way. September/ October can mark the start of new beginnings for many of us, children and adults a like. Our son started Senior school last month, and there are many youngsters starting college or university this month and so we are amongst the many families getting to grips with the new routines that lie ahead. As we move into the Autumn season, this is a time of year where we start to get our homes ready for the colder months. This is a great time of year to get your boiler checked before needing to turn them on again. We have a variety of local plumbing and heating companies available, find these all on our index on page 30. If you have a chimney, you may be looking to get it cleaned before lighting those fires; Clean Sweep on page 23 can get the job done for you. As always, our Sudoku competition is on page 27, enter and you could be in with a chance to win 2 tickets to the new Cineworld at the Quays. Congratulation this month go to Mrs Dempsey, tickets will be on their way to you soon. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month & Happy Halloween Sarah. Dave’s top ps Easy cure for an airlock in pipes If you find you need to push air out of a hot water pipe due to an airlock, there is a simple method you can use if you have a mixer tap with good ( preferably mains) pressure on the cold water. You will need to cover the faucet opening with the palm of your hand to create a seal, then open the HOT tap first, followed slowly by opening the cold tap. If the pressure in the cold tap is greater, as is the norm, then the cold water will cross inside the mixer tap and start traveling backwards up the hot pipe. As it does this it will force back any air that is in the pipes. You may have to repeat this procedure a few %mes un%l all the air is out. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top %ps along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the inves%ga%ng for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rec%fied so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HYPNOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING. *******************************************************

Some time ago, I received an email from a lady who was struggling with marital problems, and she asked whether I saw couples together, as she and her husband had reached crisis point, and neither of them knew how to pull themselves back from the brink. They had decided that if nothing worked then they would make the break.... so no pressure there then! I was able to reassure her that yes, I do see couples. I explained that initially I would see them together for two to three sessions followed by seeing them each separately and then making an appointment to again see them together, hopefully for their last session. They have agreed for me to write their story, and so for the sake of confidentiality I will call him X and her name will be Y. Now X and Y had been together for nine years, marrying fairly quickly, and for the first five years they had been happy. They had their 2 children and both had thought their life was settled with no "ups and downs", although they now say looking back that some might have called their marriage boring, as there were no quarrels, but no high excitement, until Y went back to work. She had forgotten about office banter and flirting and quite soon, someone began to show an interest in her. She was taken in by this to start with, but it was nice to have a male showing her some admiration and appreciation for a change, and business lunches became an enjoyable break from office routine. Y began to take more interest in her appearance, she lost weight, went running and felt much better and had more energy. Soon it became apparent to X that there was a difference in the status quo of their lives. A certain name came into conversation quite a lot and he became suspicious. To say they were both on "red alert" would be a fair comment, Y because she was feeling more alive as an individual, and X through suspicion in the change of his wife. One evening when Y had to work late, X decided to check up on the office and found no lights on there. Later that night there was a blazing row when she came home. Accusations were hurled and their lives had altered. Y swore that nothing had happened, and that it had just been a flirtation, but the lies had caused X to distrust her. She had realised the dangerous game that had been played out in the work-place but neither of them knew what to do to pull themselves back from the brink. Did X believe her that nothing had happened? No he didn't! So in our sessions there were many tears and tempers to start with on both sides, but as I explained to them, sometimes my job is to take a situation right back to the bare bones, for both to examine it and see if out of the wreckage, something can be salvaged, and then we can start to build the relationship and take it to an even better place than it ever was. Both realised that they had been complacent and smug in their married life, and therefore they needed to show each other just how important their marriage was, by paying sincere compliments, having date nights, and just treating each other nicely until the trust could be rebuilt. Y made the decision to leave her job and is rebuilding her husband's trust, as she realised just how precarious their situation had become, through (in her own words) the fact that she had almost succumbed to office flattery. The moral here is, never take each other for granted...you may lose something precious. If you feel the need to receive help in your relationship, please ring me on 01452 614115, and make an appointment to put the pleasure back into your lives.

Hucclecote Scout News

Scouts started back with all making toffee apples on an open fire, only lost one tooth, made a three tower pioneer bridge which all the Scouts went over several times. First extra activity is climbing at the warehouse with Go Karting and Lazer tag coming in November. The Scouts will be doing a community Day with the wardens from Robinswood Hill cutting back the hedge rows near the bridge over the motorway down Loblies Drive in November. The Annual Hallowen bonfire and firework display will be held on the last Saturday of October starting at 6.15 at the Scout Head Quarters, with all the costumes being judged. We do have spaces in all sections for new members to join in active group with evenings doing craftwork, cooking, various projects and lots of games. Beavers 6 to 8, Cubs 8 to 10 and six months with Scouts following on up to 14. Phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society Well, the flower and produce show in August was another success, and again many thanks to Rob Champion for judging all of our exhibits. I am not sure how he managed to miss out on judging the cakes this year, but he took it all in good part. And, as previewed last month, I did actually manage a win with my butternut squashes, so well done me. [I hardly like to mention that there were no other entries in that particular class..... Never mind, I won.] As I did last year, I have been taking in other societies’ shows recently to see how we might alter some of our classes to encourage more entries, and some useful ideas are circulating among the show committee. Our next meeting is on October 23rd, when we welcome back, by popular demand as they say, Fiona Warin. Last time Fiona visited us she talked about allotments – this time her topic is ‘Land Girls’. And there are still some around – I talked to one ‘girl’ at the Hucclecote Show earlier in the year and she had some very interesting reminiscences of what she described as being a really enjoyable time in her life. Then on November 27th we will be holding a members’ evening. If this follows our traditional format we will have a seed and plant swap, a quiz and a limerick competition, as well as plenty of opportunities to chat and to ask questions of other members. Some of the tips that I have picked up on previous occasions have proved really useful. December will be a blank month for us – something called Christmas seems to push our meeting out that month every year, but watch this space for information on our January and subsequent meetings. Why not join us one evening, find out more about us as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment as you listen to our speaker. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, absolutely no need to be an expert gardener – I’m not! More information from Chris on 610694. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild For the August meeting, Hucclecote TG was fortunate enough to have secured Karen Merrett to do one of her last cookery demonstrations, representing Sainsburys. The evening was a huge success, with Pimms or fruit juice on arrival, a raffle in support of Maggie's Cancer Care (our nominated charity for the year), and tea and coffee to finish. Karen demonstrated a three course meal - a smoked salmon pate starter, a couscous -stuffed rolled chicken breast main course, and a lemon and fresh cream meringue roulade for dessert. I'm sure her relaxed style sent everyone home confident that they, too, could produce all three dishes without any qualms! The samples of each dish proved that each was just as delicous as it looked. Hucclecote Townswomen's Guild meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday of each month, at 7.30pm. You are welcome to join us for speakers covering a wide range of interests and topics, tea and coffee, outings and social events. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along!

St Philio & St James Church When we were shopping the other day my son, who was racing swiftly towards the edge of boredom, asked what the time was. I thought my well-rehearsed reply, "Time you wore your watch," was well a delivered instruction for my son, but this was matched with the statement, "But my watch has stopped so it doesn't matter if I am wearing it or not." This left me wondering why I'd started this discussion in the first place rather than just confirming the correct time. Every year we regret the loss of an hour in the Spring as we move our clocks forward to enter British Summer Time and soon we will be redressing the balance with the clocks being adjusted back by that hour at the end of October. We have accepted this as part of life and other than the occasional challenge by one or two pressure groups, it is likely to continue. But what if we could turn back the clock and gain an hour, how would we use it? If the watch on your wrist stopped and you gained a few more valuable minutes, what would you do with them? I am sure that there are many things we want to do 'if we just had the time', may be fixing something that is broken, taking up a new interest we've always wanted to do, or perhaps spending some more time with those we love and care for. The Bible speaks of 'A time for everything and a season for every activity', so this Autumn, I pray that you will have time to do those things you've put off, that you will be able to make time to enjoy being with the ones you love; perhaps this is the time to make time.
