A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,
3
Welcome to the September edition of your Hucclecote Link. The Summer is almost over ( I believe we did have a few days of Summer during the school holidays!) and it’s almost time for the kids to go back to school, a time of new beginnings for many children. It can also be a time of new beginnings for many adults too, a bit of empty nest syndrome whilst their children either start their first days at primary school or fly the nest to start uni. As well as many great businesses advertising in the Hucclecote Link, we have some great local clubs advertising too. Whether its joining various WI groups, the Townswomen Guild, becoming involved with Tuesday at Two or trying your hand at Scottish Dancing, there are many clubs out there for you to try, see more details on pages 24,25,28 & 29 and take the first step trying something new. It may also be a time of new beginnings if you are expecting a new born in the coming months, Simple Beginnings, on page 23, can help you with its natural therapies, at every step of your journey, from pregnancy through to parenting. For another of our businesses it is a time to celebrate, Body Flair, our local beauticians, are celebrating 11 years of business. Many congratulation to them, and to help them celebrate they have some great offers and promotions, read more on page 18. If you are looking to celebrate - or just have a good night out, the Hucclecote Community Centre on the opposite page, are holding some great live music nights over the coming months, and tickets are great value too. With only 3 months of the year left to advertise your business in 2015, you may want to take a look at our September offer on page 28, where we are offering 3 months advertising for the price of 2. The winner of this months Sudoku competition is Karen Miller, Cineworld tickets will be on their way to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 27. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month And good luck to all those, young and old(er), who are starting their new beginnings this month Sarah. Dave’s top tips Why lead flashings fail and how to repair them The main reason for repairing lead flashing is due to splits and cracks in the lead, and failure in lead flashing is because of its high coefficient of linear expansion. Lead expands a huge amount in the heat, shrinks a lot in the cold, and wanders about a bit at all temperatures in between. If this expansion and contraction are allowed to continue freely, the lead flashing will last for 100 years. Lead flashings however are usually fixed in position for one reason or another and it is this limitation to movement that causes splits and cracks. Also If the lead is not fully supported it will eventually sag and split. When lead does split the correct way to repair it is to weld a piece of lead over the split. This is an advanced procedure which was usually in the plumbers domain of jobs. Very few plumbers these days know how to weld lead and its very different to welding other metals. Flashing tape is the cheaper alternative, which is comprised of a very thin strip of aluminum covered on one side by a tacky bitumen layer. It is self-adhesive and can be used with a primer to help the adhesion but for lead repairs it works best when heated up. We must stress that this is not a permanent repair for lead as welding or replacement is the only permanent solution. You can however still get many good years from using flashing tape Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

STOP I don't know if you have ever been on a long journey with children but there are several phrases most parents do not want to hear from the back seat. Firstly, "I need a wee", usually half a mile past motorway services, or "Ugh, you should see what (...substitute name of child...) has just done", or number one on the 'set my teeth on edge scale', "Are we there yet?" and you bite your tongue resisting the urge to utter the words, "Yes we have arrived but I thought, I'd just keep on driving". Long journeys are often part of our summer lives, whether it is the dash to the airport to be on time for the four hour check in process or the race to Kent for the Ferry or Tunnel only to sit for hours in the queues around Ashford whilst the motorway has been turned into a make shift lorry park. We spend a lot of time trying to get somewhere, as quickly as possible. Whilst on a long motorway drive recently, I was left wondering what the countryside was like just the other side of the embankment. What would I see and experience if I wasn't in a hurry to be somewhere and just slowed down, pulled up the slip road and explored. Life flies by sometimes and seems to get faster each year as we rush from one thing to the next; has it really been 8 or 9 months since Christmas? And how many shopping days have we got until the next one? I wonder what we would see if we just slowed down, pulled over and stopped for a bit. Would we have time to listen to each other more, would we be able to see life from an others point of view. As a Christian, I believe that God wants a relationship with us, to communicate us and if we are rushing around so much, we don't have time to hear what He has to say. So I pray that if you are finding that all you are doing is rushing to get somewhere that you'll have time to slow down, pull over and see what is around. Steve Godsell, St Philip & St James Church, Hucclecote.

We are a young, informal and friendly WI group who meet on the second Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in the Community Room at Coopers Edge School. Our membership is growing quite rapidly, and we've been welcoming new faces at each of our last few mee*ngs. If you fancy giving us a go, feel free to come along to our next mee*ng. You can contact us first if you prefer (details below), but it's not necessary. For our August mee*ng we had a lovely lady who demonstrated the art of flower arranging whilst regaling us with some very funny stories - some of us were literally crying with laughter. Who knew flower arranging could be so amusing?! In September it's a chance for us to learn about car maintenance (rescheduled from a couple of months ago). We are looking for a chocola*er to host a chocolate tas*ng at a future mee*ng - if you know of anyone suitable, please get in touch! In between the monthly mee*ngs we also hold other regular clubs for WI members: book club, cra6 club, a dining club, as well as regular social events such as cinema and theatre trips and weekends away, and we play (not always very well!) in the Gloucestershire WI ski8les league. We always include *me during our mee*ngs for tea (or wine!) and homemade cake and a chance to chat with other members. It's a great way of making new friends if you are new to the area, or just want to socialise more. For more informa*on, please see www.heartsandhurricaneswi.weebly.com. You can also contact us on 07934 170304 or heartsandhurricaneswi@hotmail.co.uk. Feel free to try up to 3 mee*ngs absolutely free, and if you like us, we'd love you to join the WI (£36 per year) - this gives you access to other organised events across Gloucestershire and na*onally.
Do you enjoy playing board games, scrabble, cards, dominoes, draughts Would you like a chat and an afternoon cup of tea and cake? Then
Tuesday @ Two In the Church Centre behind the Church of St Philip & St James Larkhay Road, Hucclecote is the place for you! We meet fortnightly on a Tuesday at 2pm ‘till 4pm
15th & 29th September If you don’t want to play games, just come for a chat, bring your friends. The charge is £1 towards refreshments. We look forward to seeing you More information from

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMEN GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday of each month at 7.30pm. We have a variety of speakers covering a wide range of subjects followed by tea & coffee and most importantly a chance to chat and socialise. Last months speaker was Marion Beagley whose talk was entitled "My Mother was a Cockney" Her Mother was born in 1909 within the sound of Bow Bells making her a true Cockney. She taught her children the Cockney alphabet and of course Cockney Rhyme slang both of which she demonstrated to us. A modern example of these were "Have you got a Michael" referring to Michael Caine so translated it was "Have you got a Pain" and the letter "P" in the alphabet was not "P for Pig" but "P for Relief" She ended by saying that she had wished she had asked more about her heritage when her Mother was alive. Today there have been amazing changes in our lives which we need to records for future generations. We are holding a Fashion Show this August by Bonmarche in place of our regular meeting and our September meeting will welcome Chris Evans whose talk is entitled "The Butterfly Garden" an educational and land skills project for students with learning difficulties. Do come along and join us where a warm welcome and friendship awaits. For further information call Linda on 01452 617701

Hucclecote Scout News

Summer Camp went well with only two days rather wet so we went to the Swansea Leisure Centre where they had wave machines and several shoots. Scouts walked to the end of Worms Head and went on the muddiest assault course in the country, all ended up plastered in mud and soaking wet. All the Scouts enjoyed it but just as well it was a warm day and they had taken a change of clothes. The night we slept outside in the ruins of an old castle with no roof but walls 10 foot high went well. A clear night when we could see the plough formation of the stars above us. Swimming on Three Cliffs bay & Rhossili beach where the tide came in very quickly so just moved clothes in time. The Scouts cooked on open fires and those who did not have the Camper and camp cook passed the badge. Scouts start back on Friday 4th September at 7pm with five Cubs coming up, helps replace the 8 Scouts going into Explorers. A great time for new members to come along and enjoy the fun of Scouting in a very active Scouts Unit. For more details on Scouts, Cubs or Beavers 6 to 14 Year old please phone Terry on 521664
