Dave’s top tips Drilling large holes Larger holes are often required when installing switches or laying pipes. For this reason, special drill bit shapes and special material are necessary. If you want to work on wood or soft plastic, you will require not only an impact drill but also special accessories – what are known as hole cutters or hole saws. These enable you to drill in soft materials such as fiberboard or wood. Accessories made of High Speed Steel (HSS) should be used for working on metal and hard plastics A tungsten-carbide multi-purpose drill bit is recommended for drilling in stone or tiles. It is also suitable for hard woods, wooden materials and coated boards. The harder the material, the higher the frictional forces between the material and the bit. Therefore, water has to be used to cool the holes being drilled in tiles or concrete. Large holes that are drilled in metal are lubricated and cooled with a special drill emulsion, lubricating paste or machine oil. Safety is paramount: Due to the large circumference of the drill bits, much greater forces occur during work than in normal drilling applications. Modern drills have such high power that they cannot be held if they get jammed. This is why you should drill with an auxiliary handle attached. Gardening Tips for September from Garden Delight..

Flowers, Tubs and Borders Trim back and remove any gone over summer bedding and start the process of replacing with autumn flowering plants. Don’t be tempted to buy and plant out pansies too early you may find if the weather remains warm they will go leggy and attract aphids. Wait until the end of the month until the weather cools a little. It’s a good month to be buying and planting out bulbs for a riot of colour next spring. Get the bulbs when they are fresh in the stores but be sure they have not been in stock too long and therefore drying out under the heat. Prepared Hyacinths (these are ones which have been pre treated to ensure the flower bud is well up the bulb) should be planted up in containers and placed in a cool dark place by the end of the month. If you don’t have holes in the pots you will need a bulb fibre compost containing charcoal and oyster shell which keeps the compost sweet. These pots can then be brought out in time to flower for Christmas; a number of other bulbs are suitable for this treatment, check with your local garden centre for advice. Spray michealmass daises with a fungicide to control mildew before flowering. Dahlias will be looking good and still producing lots of flowers, if yours suffer from earwigs (lots of nibbled holes in the leaves) then try placing an up turned flower pot full of straw or shredded paper on a cane in amongst the plants, check it every morning you will find that the earwigs like to hang out here during the day, you can then dispose of them as you wish.
Lawns Now is a good time to sow new lawns or lay new turf. Scarify and aerate existing lawns, scarifying means to rake out and remove the thatch or old dead grass and if your lawn is the type which holds water during the winter it will benefit from aerating – go over the lawn with a garden fork making holes and then sweep/rake in a gritty lawn treatment to aid drainage and help keep down moss. Feed lawns with an autumn lawn feed, these autumn feeds go to the roots and toughen up the lawn for the hard frosts of winter, they also help to control moss
Fruit and Vegetables Lift Onions and dry them out by putting them on the garden path for a day or so in the late autumn sunshine. Store them somewhere cool dry and airy to use as required. Plant Garlic now in a sunny free draining spot, garden centres should now have the new cloves for sale. They should also have stocks of Japanese onions which if planted now will be ready for an early crop next June, but be quick they usually sell out very fast! Toward the end of the month lift the last of the beetroot, carrots and potatoes but leave in parsnips and Swedes until after the first frost this way they will develop more flavour Sow Aquadulce broad beans, this variety will over winter as it’s hardy and therefore give you an early crop next year. ‘Claudia’ is an improved variety
Plant of the Month Abelia grandiflora – Easy to grow plant for the back of the border growing to around 6ft but with careful pruning in April if can be kept at around 4ft in height. The leaves are semi evergreen and have a bronze tinge to them, masses of pale pink flowers are produced in June and continue to October. Any reasonable soil in a light position. The variety ‘Francis Mason ‘ is smaller in habit and has brighter gold tinged leaves. St Philip and St James Church Proud to be British If I were an entrepreneur and not a vicar I think I would have spent most of this year manufacturing union jack flags and all things red, white and blue! Over the last few months we have seen union and bunting adorning homes, businesses and schools and people everywhere have been embracing a new found respect for our nation. The majesty of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the quirkiness of the British humour shown at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, and the national pride exhibited in our Olympic and Paralympic athletes have reminded us that whilst we are not perfect we have a lot to shout about. In newspaper articles, on television and radio, on Facebook and Twitter people are declaring that they are proud to be British. Recently I read this statement in an article: “I'm very proud to be British. I consider it an absolute honour and a privilege to be born in a western society where we've got democracy, human rights, the right to vote, rights for women, parliament. We have politicians, with all their faults, who battle what they feel are injustices. As a society we have become ungrateful. We've got the NHS, we've got an education system and we're actually quite a caring, accepting, tolerant nation” (Shazia Awan). We still have our issues and we still have our challenges, but today and every day I give thanks for our nation and the many blessings we enjoy. Why not spend some time today thanking God for this land, for its leaders and for those who represent us as ambassadors in sport, business and politics, for the freedom we enjoy and the many blessings of being British. Hucclecote Townswomen Guild The July meeting of Hucclecote Townswomens Guild, saw another visit from Mrs Susan Marshfield, a good friend of HTG, telling us this time that “Strange Things do Happen”! and in no time at all, the room was filled with the sound of laughter, as the ‘strange things’ related by our speaker, that had happened to her turned out to be very humorous indeed-even though the events themselves weren’t funny (eg turning up to the wrong Funeral!) until the addition of the “strange things” happening at the same time made all the difference! We all enjoyed a very entertaining and mirthful evening! August 2nd saw the Fashion Show held at Hucclecote Community Centre, turn out to be a “full house”, and a very successful evening, models courtesy of HTG!, when the clothes modelled were all ‘brand names’, and all the items present were for sale on the evening at considerably reduced prices. Many thanks to everyone who supported this event, especially as proceeds from the evening are to Hucclecote Community Centre, a very worthwhile cause. The next meeting of HTG, will take place on Thursday 20th September, at 730pm,at Hucclecote Community Centre, when Carol Stafford will be giving us a “ Cake Demonstration” and is something to look forward to after the holidays. The Sales Table will be: Cakes!
Hucclecote Horticultural Society By the time you read this we will have held our annual Members’ produce show, and we will have seen just how successful we have been at beating the weather this year. I suspect that we will have been down on potatoes and tomatoes due to the blight, which has affected a great many of us this year, but all being well the later than usual blooming of some flowers, and the beneficial effects of the rain on some vegetables could mean a better show than ever. At our next meeting on 27th September we will have a speaker from Wanborough Nurseries, who will be taking us through the herbs that we can grow, and their uses, either in cookery or as a form of home medicine. Though herbs are sometimes the Cinderellas of the gardening world, their potential impact on our lives is far more significant than that of either flowers or vegetables. We are looking forward to this talk very much, complementing our earlier trip and most enlightening trip to an amazing herb garden in Worcester. October 25th sees an ‘in-house’ event, when we are holding a Members’ evening, with a plant and seed swap, a bring and buy and a question and answer session at which we will pick one anothers’ brains. [Not mine I might add....it stopped working long since!] All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm. HUCCLECOTE SCOUT GROUP Summer Camp went well with a weeks hot, dry weather, which made swimming in the sea most days very refreshing (plus gave all the Scouts a wash). It was a Scout camp site with over 600 in camp in the New Forest, each site being separated by trees. With 52 in camp the Explorers did a two day hike at the start of the camp as their main project. The many activities the Scouts did from raft building, archery, rifle shooting, climbing, and abseiling were enjoyed by everyone. As usual we were only on open fires with plenty of wood even though it was pallets. Scouts on their first Summer camp all passed the camp cook badge and if second camp their camper badge. The high light of the camp was a visit to Brownsea Island where the first Scout camp was held in 1907. The Scouts did the Baden Powel 1 challenge which followed the lines of activities from the first camp. The cubs held their annual Cub camp near Stroud but were not so lucky with the weather but all enjoyed the activities and sleeping out in tents. The next main event for the Group is the 35th annual Father and Son/Daughter camp at Cranham over weekend of 21st to 23rd September. All money and booking should have been in before the holiday, if you have forgot to book and want to come please phone me. With many Beavers moving into Cubs and Cubs into Scouts there are some spare places, please phone Terry on 521664 for more details.
SILVERDALE W.I July saw the Silverdale W.I. holding their annual garden party and summer social - it was a case of "if wet - indoors" as naturally it rained. However, we had a very jolly time and the members who had adorned themselves in their hand made hats proved to be a great success we had some lovely creations which culminated in Norma Hammett winning with her hat which was highly decorated and matched her overall ensemble perfectly. Our president, Jean Butt, reminded members that we were not holding a meeting in August but were going on an outing instead on Weds. 22nd August to Webbs of Wychbold - for which we sincerely hope that the everlasting rain manages to stay away for that day. We next meet on Thursday September 20th when our speaker will be Lorraine Parsloe with a talk entitled "Only Fools and Corsets". We meet at the Hucclecote Methodist Church Hall, Carisbrooke Road, Hucclecote. Meeting starts at 10 a.m. all members and visitors welcome.
