Dave’s top tips FLAT ROOF PROBLEMS Over the last few weeks I have attended several premises with problems with their flat roofs. Some of these problems are purely down to the age of the roof, and others have been found to have large hollow bumps in them caused by moisture penetrating under the felt and expanding and contracting with the differing seasonal temperatures. This can be remedied with a patch once the bump has been flattened out, however a replacement is always the better option. Sometimes upon closer inspection it is found that chip-board has been used as the roofing board, (this was nearly always the case many years ago) and although the boards may seem sound I always advise that when the roof is re-felted that these boards also get replaced with OSB sterling board or marine ply. The reason for this recommendation is that chip board when wet can simply fall apart so it is not only dangerous to walk on but will soon let the water into your home, also with age it tends to become very brittle. Whereas Osb or marine ply makes a much sturdier base for your roof and is far more tolerant of some leakage without disintegrating at the same rate as chip board. Gardening Tips for September from Garden Delight..

Flowers, Tubs and Borders Trim back and remove any gone over summer bedding and start the process of replacing with autumn flowering plants. Don’t be tempted to buy and plant out pansies too early you may find if the weather remains warm they will go leggy and attract aphids. Wait until the end of the month until the weather cools a little. It’s a good month to be buying and planting out bulbs for a riot of colour next spring. Get the bulbs when they are fresh in the stores but be sure they have not been in stock too long and therefore drying out under the heat. Prepared Hyacinths (these are ones which have been pre treated to ensure the flower bud is well up the bulb) should be planted up in containers and placed in a cool dark place by the end of the month. If you don’t have holes in the pots you will need a bulb fibre compost containing charcoal and oyster shell which keeps the compost sweet. These pots can then be brought out in time to flower for Christmas; a number of other bulbs are suitable for this treatment, check with your local garden centre for advice. Spray michealmass daises with a fungicide to control mildew before flowering. Dahlias will be looking good and still producing lots of flowers, if yours suffer from earwigs (lots of nibbled holes in the leaves) then try placing an up turned flower pot full of straw or shredded paper on a cane in amongst the plants, check it every morning you will find that the earwigs like to hang out here during the day, you can then dispose of them as you wish.
Lawns Now is a good time to sow new lawns or lay new turf. Scarify and aerate existing lawns, scarifying means to rake out and remove the thatch or old dead grass and if your lawn is the type which holds water during the winter it will benefit from aerating – go over the lawn with a garden fork making holes and then sweep/rake in a gritty lawn treatment to aid drainage and help keep down moss. Feed lawns with an autumn lawn feed, these autumn feeds go to the roots and toughen up the lawn for the hard frosts of winter, they also help to control moss
Fruit and Vegetables Lift Onions and dry them out by putting them on the garden path for a day or so in the late autumn sunshine. Store them somewhere cool dry and airy to use as required. Plant Garlic now in a sunny free draining spot, garden centres should now have the new cloves for sale. They should also have stocks of Japanese onions which if planted now will be ready for an early crop next June, but be quick they usually sell out very fast! Toward the end of the month lift the last of the beetroot, carrots and potatoes but leave in parsnips and Swedes until after the first frost this way they will develop more flavour Sow Aquadulce broad beans, this variety will over winter as it’s hardy and therefore give you an early crop next year. ‘Claudia’ is an improved variety
General Tip Toward the end of the month you can pick the last of the tomatoes, any green fruits that have not ripened you can either use to make green apple chutney or you can place them on a sunny window sill to ripen. Alternatively try putting a few in a brown paper bag with a ripening banana (or the skin) this should speed up the ripening process. Earlier this year I had the privilege of flying to Toronto. Just as I was beginning to get restless the plane arrived at the north-eastern tip of Canada and for the next hour or so the view from my window seat changed from snow covered mountain to frozen lake, tiny communities to sprawling suburbs. I was captivated by the sight and found myself saying ‘wow’. Every now and again we have those wow moments when we are struck by the beauty of nature, the kindness of people, the birth of a tiny baby or a moment which lifts our eyes from the normal routine of life. The Bible talks often of giving God praise and thanksgiving for all that is good and as we approach our annual celebration of Harvest there is a lot to be thankful for. At Harvest we often sing a beautiful hymn with the opening words ‘Praise and thanksgiving, Father, we offer, for all things living, you have made good’. Hucclecote Horticultural Society Didn’t I do well in our quiz! What I really mean is that I did not give a single wrong answer during the entire evening! But then I have to confess that that was entirely due to me being selected to keep the score, and so unable to be part of a team at all. In the event our former Chairman and her team won – by a country mile is I think the right expression. A good time was had by all, and our thanks go to Rene Geissler for a combination of amusing and perplexing questions. Our next meeting will be on 26th September, which will be our annual seed and plant swap, as part of a members’ evening. Yours truly also prepares a quiz for these evenings, though nothing like as difficult as the one we have just had. These are just fun evenings. We follow that on 24th October when we welcome back with a talk on Butterflies in Gardens the two Sues, Sue Dodd and Sue Smith. This year seems to have produced more cabbage whites – ugh- than ever before, but also a good variety of the other more colourful butterflies. I am hoping to find out why this should be, and if there is any way that we can discourage one sort whilst encouraging the others. Planning and booking has now started for the 2014 session, and already we have signed up some really interesting speakers to go with our other regular in-house events. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm with refreshments from 7.15 pm.
