A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the September edition of your Hucclecote Link. The Summer holidays are now almost over and its back to school and back to the routine time. September can mark the start of new beginnings for many of us, children and adults a like. Our son is starting Senior school this month, so we will be amongst the many families getting to grips with the new routines that lie ahead. As we move into the Autumn season, this is a time of year where we start to get our homes ready for the colder months. This is a great time of year to get your boiler checked before needing to turn them on again. We have a variety of local plumbing and heating companies available, find these all on our index on page 30. If you have a chimney, you may be looking to get it cleaned before lighting those fires; Clean Sweep on page 23 can get the job done for you. As always, our Sudoku competition is on page 27, enter and you could be in with a chance to win 2 tickets to the new Cineworld at the Quays. Congratulation this month go to Mr Hall, tickets will be on their way to you soon. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month Sarah. Dave’s top ps Fixing to plasterboard walls Some mes it is not prac cal to fix to walls and ceilings using the tradi onal methods of nails and screws and most people think that glue would not be strong enough. However by using some of the widely available construc on adhesives it will allow you to fix just about anything to anything else. One common use could be for fixing a curtain rail to a hollow plasterboard wall for example. If the curtains are heavy you will need a good strong fixing. This can be achieved by gluing a length of mber along where the curtain track is to go. This will then spread the load of the weight of the curtains over a larger area and also it will give you a firm wooden base to screw into. As a safety precau on it may also be a good idea to fix the mber with a few plasterboard screws as well, this will also help keep things in place as the adhesive sets. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top ps along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the inves ga ng for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rec fied so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HYPNOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING.
21
******************************************************* Addictions: Someone who knows I am a Clinical Counsellor and Hypnotherapist stopped me in the road just recently, and asked me if I ever deal with people's addictions as she knew of someone who needed help. Now, it would be true to say that addictions come in many shapes, sizes, and types and covers a great range of subjects. In fact rather like phobias, there are literally hundreds, and as you read this, you might have heard of some to add to the list of ones that I have helped people with over the years. Cigarettes, food, drugs, gambling, alcohol and of course, shopping are just a few that can cause so many problems for people and their families, because most addictions have a basis in financial ruin and detrimental health, if they become addicted to continuing with these things. All these things cost money but also can cost relationships and jobs. They can literally destroy people's lives but one of the little known details of addictions are that if it is something that is eaten, drunk, injected or consumed in whatever way, it can take the body three weeks to dispel completely. Now three weeks out of your whole life isn't much, but when you are forced into having to accept that it is an addiction and one that has to be dispensed with, then that length of time can seem rather frightening. And that is where I come in. Helping the person to face up to it, and the consequences if they don't control or eradicate it, is the first important step. Actually being honest with themselves and saying "I am an addict" is not easy, but from that moment of acceptance, we then discuss how the problem got out of control, and then we find a way between us that feels comfortable for the addict to try and stick with. Hypnotherapy is the easiest way to overcome the temptations, and it can help to regain control because whenever we have a problem, if it gets out of control it feels as if the problem is controlling us, rather than us taking back the self-control and dealing with it properly by using our will-power which Hypnotherapy can help with. If you need help with this or any other problem, why not ring me on the number in the box below, and you can make an appointment at 33 Green Lane, Hucclecote, GL3 3QU, so with my help you can beat that addiction once and for all. ********************************************************

Hucclecote Scout News
Summer Camp in Yorkshire was a great success with all the Scouts doing rifle shooting, archery, climbing and swimming and having a go at making a coracle (one man round boat used on the Severn). The visit to the National coal mine was enjoyed, even going down at half speed in the shaft cage was fairly fast. The Scouts decided that school was better then working down the pits from 6 years old. The underground tour sitting in cars at Yorvic showed how York used to be. The weather was good until the last night which meant we had to come back with wet tents. The Explorers camp in Austria also went well but they had mixed weather. 14 - 18 year olds. Fathers and Sons/Daughters camp all in hand, with 90 on the camp at Cranham in September. Sorry all patrols are worked out and kit for 7 patrols packed so NO spaces left. Scouts start back the Friday the schools start and other units the week after. With the start of the Scouting year an ideal time for anyone interested in joining Scouting to come along (age 6 to 14) phone Terry on 521664 for more information.
Hucclecote Horticultural Society Many thanks to Brian McBernie for a most entertaining trip into the past with his introduction to the history of Barnwood House. Many memories were awakened for those who had a connection with the place for one reason or another. I don’t know how your veg are growing this year, but while we have not had a glut of courgettes, we have certainly had enough beans to sink the proverbial battleship, with soup and veg most days of the week, and the freezer crammed with packets of runners, as well as French and dwarf beans. And with no blight in the potatoes – another bonus this year. Not a lot of luck with the pumpkins – about the right size for the grandchildren to play marbles with, though I am hoping that the butternut squash will earn me a prize at our show. Our September 25th meeting sees a visit from John Crowther of the Brimscombe Hedgehog Sanctuary. Sadly, like so many other species, hedgehogs are thinner on the ground than they were. And as a help to gardeners by their appetite for slugs, we are hoping to find out how we can help to encourage them and see if we can make a difference to their numbers. Then on October 23rd we welcome back, by popular demand as they say, Fiona Warin. Last time Fiona visited us she talked about allotments – this time her topic is ‘Land Girls’. And there are still some around – I talked to one ‘girl’ at the Hucclecote Show earlier in the year. Why not join us one evening, find out more about us as well as enjoying an evening’s entertainment as you listen to our speaker. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, with refreshments from 7.15 pm for a 7.30 start. All welcome, absolutely no need to be an expert gardener – I’m not! Hucclecote Townswomen Guild The speaker at our July meeting was Margaret Daniels, in her guise as "The Bard of Barnwood". Margaret is a Barnwood resident of many years, who has spent time at Barnwood Primary School in various roles. Her well-observed, humourous poems covered a range of subjects - Nativity plays, Christmas, family life, dog ownership and being a World Cup widow - and clearly struck a chord with members of the audience! Margaret is a Cheltenham Festival winner, with a poem about the joys of being a new-comer to cycling in later life, and has also won Ottakers National Poetry Week. Details were given of the coach trip to Cardiff for Christmas shopping, the Christmas Lunch at Hatherley Manor, and the coach trip to Bletchley Park. Hucclecote TWG meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the 3rd Thursday of each month, at 7.30pm. You are welcome to join us for speakers covering a wide range of interests and topics, tea & biscuits, outings and social events. Phone Linda on 617701 for more details - or just come along!
Change We've been blessed recently in Church with the safe arrival of several new babies. It's amazing to see how small & helpless they are but very quickly we know they will grow and develop. Babies are all about change, mostly exciting but some changes are fearful; just watch a dad's face when he's told 'The baby's nappy needs changing' and you'll know what I mean. Change happens all around us, in relationships, in jobs & in circumstances of life and this season many are making a change in education with new classes, new schools and new colleges. But often we may feel that change is happening in the wrong places, don't we often wanted a little more stability in life around us yet we want to change things about ourselves? I'm not talking about an altered nose or toned tummy, it's that deep down change that would really make a difference to how we feel about ourselves. In a changing world, the bible describes God as 'the same yesterday, today and forever' yet throughout history, He has made such a difference in so many peoples lives. If you fancy a change this autumn that is long lasting and doesn't require a whole new wardrobe, I'd like to invite you to try the latest Alpha course, like 24 million people world wide have already done. Just contact us on 01452 372177 or email alpha.stpandstj@mail.com Steve Godsell, Assistant Minister, St Philip & St James Church, Hucclecote.’ Please mention
