Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the September edition of your Hucclecote Link. Can you believe it is September already! What a strange Summer it has been. Many had mixed feelings about going away, so whether you had a staycation or were still able to go abroad, I do hope you were able to enjoy a change of scene for a while. It seems as though life is starting to feel like it is getting back on track slowly, with schools returning this month, let’s hope that goes smoothly and our children can start to get their education back on track. Thankfully for our fantastic local businesses, the government are starting to give the go ahead for those industries that were still having to keep their doors closed. So this month we warmly welcome back; Hucclecote Community Centre, local beauticians - Beauty Spot Glos and local solicitors, Dee & Griffin. Obviously they all have had to make alterations to enable them to open safely, so please check their websites before visiting them, but this is such good news and we wish them all the best when they open their doors to customers again. Covid 19 will have had such an impact on our local businesses that now more that ever it is a really important time for us to help support them and help get them back on their feet. Please all continue to take care and keep safe, hope you all have a good month. Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Painting a flush door
A flush door is a door without any additions. There are no panels or glazing windows just a straight forward flat faced door. Painting a flush door, although they are the most basic of doors, is one of the hardest job of all door painting as there can be no break when painting a side. If you stop for more than a minute or two the edge of the paint hardens and this can show through the painted finish as a ridge in the paintwork. The flush door should be held open by using door wedges pushed in under the door after a piece of cardboard or old carpet off cut has been pushed under the door to protect the floor. Take off the door handles and smear a tiny bit of Vaseline on the hinges. This will stop any paint sticking to them and if you do get paint on the hinges it will allow you to wipe it off easily. Use the hose of the Hoover to suck out any sawdust from the lock or latch apertures. Flush doors can be painted by using a roller and if you do this use a small (radiator) roller. Go over the rolled door with a dry brush to brush out any stipple effects the roller may have left. It is much better, especially when using gloss paint to use a roller with natural fibres such as sheepskin, mohair or wool. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Film Releases for September 2020 Due to the current situation, all film releases are subject to change and we advise customers to keep up to date with the Cineworld website and the Cineworld social media.
26th August 2020 Tenet Director – Christopher Nolan Starring – John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh Time Runs Out. Critically acclaimed director Christopher Nolan brings Hollywood back to the big screen after four long months of being away. A very secretive film, Tenet is a spy thriller the likes of which has never been seen before with a science fiction twist, revolving around an enigma known as “Tenet” that involves manipulating the very flow of time. Christopher Nolan is a filmmaker that enjoys playing with narrative and realism within his films, as seen in his previous titles Dunkirk (2017), Interstellar (2014) Inception (2010) and The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005-2012). Starring the son of Denzel Washington; John David Washington, and the next actor to portray Batman in Robert Pattinson, and with most stunts done for real with little VFX, Tenet is the explosive thriller that the cinema industry has been waiting for and there seems no better way to welcome Hollywood back to the big screen.
01st September 2020 Jonas Kaufmann: My Vienna Director – Thomas Voigt Starring – Jonas Kaufmann, Rachel Willis-Sorensen, Jochen Rieder, Prague Philharmonic Orchestra Jonas Kaufmann: My Vienna is a deeply personal tribute by the star tenor to the world-famous melodies from the birthplace of waltz and operetta. Filmed live in the magical setting of the Wiener Konzerthaus, the concert features popular Viennese music from Die Fledermaus and Wienerblut by Johann Strauss and Franz Lehar's The Merry Widow, plus many of the classic songs inspired by the city of Vienna. Jonas Kaufmann performs with the Prague Philharmonia orchestra under the baton of Maestro Jochen Rieder and is joined by the internationally acclaimed soprano Rachel Willis-Sorensen. Recorded Concert filmed live at the Wiener Konzerthaus, Vienna in October 2019.
04th September 2020 The New Mutants Director – Josh Boone Starring – Maisie Williams, Ana Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga Originally set to be released back in 2018, 20th Century Fox’s Marvel film has been hampered by setbacks since filming finished. Having since twice rescheduled for release and then pushed back further when cinemas closed, The New Mutants is finally coming to the big screen where it belongs in September. The New Mutants will be 20th Century Fox’s last entry into the Marvel world and the X-Men universe they started all the way back in 2000. The New Mutants is an original horror where a group of young mutants find themselves stuck in an isolated hospital awaiting psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences take place, these young mutants are forced to band together with both their mutant abilities and their new-found friendships being tested. This will be a Marvel X-Men film the like of which fans have never seen before and will be worth the agonising long wait to see it on the big screen.
18th Sepetmber 2020 The King’s Man Director – Matthew Vaughn Starring – Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, Matthew Goode, Tom Hollander, Harris Dickenson, Charles Dance A simple premise: “As a collection of history's worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man and his protégé must race against time to stop them,” but The King’s Man is more than all that. Directed by Matthew Vaughn, if the title: The King’s Man sounds familiar, that’s because it is a prequel to the two Kingsman films from 2014 and 2017 respectively. Set around the First World War, The King’s Man tells the origin of the independent secret service as seen in the aforementioned action spy films and stars Ralph Fiennes as he travels Europe fighting against evil as the King’s Man. A fun, action packed and often quite adult spy film that pays homage to other spy franchises like James Bond, this prequel is not to be missed.

Hucclecote Garden Club Although we have not met as a Garden Club since the beginning of the year, we continue updating our Members on gardening events locally, thanks to Jenny our Newsletter compiler. We have been notified via Rod Wells, Secretary of the Gloucestershire Federation of Gardening Societies, of quite a few local National Garden Scheme Gardens open to the general public now and during the coming months, including Highnam Court, Gloucester opening on Sunday 6th September, Trench Hill Gardens, Sheepscombe opening on Sunday 13th September and Awkward Hill Cottage, Bibury opening on Sunday 4th October. If interested tickets can be booked via the website ngs.org.uk/product-category/garden tickets. Locally we all do have the lovely Barnwood Arboretum to visit for a feel of the outdoors where a variety of birds, trees, insects and wildflowers can be seen. It has been amazing to see how many local families have made use of this peaceful haven with picnics, dog walking, games on the green, we are certainly lucky to have this facility on our doorstep. For more information on the Garden Club please contact Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD
Sadly, the restrictions on public gatherings at venues such as the Community Centre look set to continue for some months yet, so there are no plans to hold further monthly evening meetings of the Guild until the start of next year. The speakers who were booked for 2020 have been rebooked for next year, and the programme of other events has been put on hold for the time being. Guild members will be written to individually by the Committee, but should anyone have any questions, please phone Linda on 617701. Thanks to the Hucclecote Link for allowing us to keep members in touch with developments.

Hucclecote Larkhay WI The Larkhay WI has come to a very sad decision that because of the pandemic and government guidelines, we will not have a meeting for the rest of 2020. We have let all our member know by letter, but will be keeping in touch with them as best we can. After many weeks of lockdown, no one knows what will happen and we will do our best to get through this time and look forward to 2021. We are very optimistic and have already planned next years monthly meetings and fingers crossed we will all be back together, enjoying our meetings and the best bit— socializing. Look after yourselves and keep well and like the rest of us, we are all looking forward to getting back to normal. For more information on when we may restart phone Beverley on 01452 613208
