April is here, the clocks have gone forward and Spring is in the air. I do love this time of year, as the evenings pull out, the weather starts to warm up and we all start to venture outside again. Sometimes though we can get a bit of a shock once outside, when we notice the amount of work that needs doing on our gardens / patios etc. Well the Hucclecote Link may be able to help you. 0&'4)4170& 9#6'4 .'#-5 The phrase “underground water leak” is one of those, which strikes fear into every homeowner’s heart. By its very nature, you have no idea how long the leak may have been occurring or what damage it may have already done. Bearing this in mind it is important to identify a leak as soon as possible and to get it fixed as quickly as you can. The first sign you have a water leak may be that your water meter is ticking over even when all of your household taps are turned off. This is a sure sign that something is wrong. If you do not have a water meter, you may have noticed patches of water in your garden or out front of your house, which never dry up. If the water is bubbling up you have fairly clear evidence. You first port of call is your water company. They will be able to tell you whether the leak comes under their jurisdiction and if you will have to pay. In most cases, if the leak is on your land it is your responsibility. Your water company will be able to give you a list of local contractors who can help you to identify and fix the leak. Generally an underground leak is not something you can deal with yourself. Contact your insurance company to see if your underground pipes are covered by your policy. Hucclecote Horticultural Society Our seeds have arrived and been distributed, and I for one have been busy getting them into propagators and [hopefully] started on their way to brightening up the garden in the summer. By the time you read this we will have had our AGM and elected a new committee. Particular thanks to Margaret Turner from the current committee who has arranged a super programme for us for 2012/2013 In addition we are already looking forward to June when we will be making a visit to the magnificent RHS gardens in Wisley. For our April meeting, which is on the 26th, we have a complete change from gardening â&#x20AC;&#x201C; John Greene from Gloucester Film Makers is coming along to take us back in time as we watch a selection from his collection of films of old Gloucester. Who knows but one of our older Gloucester-born members just might recognise someone they knew â&#x20AC;&#x201C; possibly even themselves as a small child. I am much too young myself of course..... Then on 24th May we have a return visit from Miss Brenda Jones, this time telling us how she [and we] can get the best of both worlds by mixing old traditions with new techniques. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents. HUCCLECOTE SCOUT GROUP The Founders Day Celebrations went well with 150 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and their parents enjoying camp fire songs and items put on by units, ending with a good supply of food. With the fine weather Scouts had their first fires outside in their patrols cooking pancakes after some pancake relays and tennis with pancakes inside. Things always taste better cooked on an open fire it will be Easter biscuits in a few weeks time. The Scouts did a conservation project at the Hucclecote meadow (bottom Green Lane) starting to clear an over grown hedge which has spread to 10 feet wide. The hot dogs and drink went down well half way through. At the District swimming gala we managed two gain to cups in the medley and freestyle very good effort by everyone. Plans for our May Day camp at a local farm are well ahead with most of the Scouts coming as usual all open fires in patrols. With an incident trail and a compass treasure hunt and usual games and evening camp fires. The group has bought a new trailer and is selling our wooden one for £100 o.n.o call and see it any Friday between 6.30 and 9.00pm On Sunday 22nd April the whole District will march from the Spa to the Cathedral for the St Georges Day parade, with about 1000 walking it shows the strength of Scouting in Gloucester.
