Hucclecote Horticultural Society Well, we have placed our first bulk seed order, with a good number of members selecting a vast range of seeds of all kinds – vegetables and flowers both annuals and perennials. All we need now is the seeds, and of course the better weather to get them started. Our March meeting, on the 22nd [immediately following our AGM] sees the return of Mark Moir, owner of a gardening business at Newent, who is talking to us this time about Edible Gardening: something more and more gardeners are getting involved in. Aside from cost issues, most of us would agree that the taste of any veg picked an hour before you cook it beats shop bought. For our April meeting, which is on the 26th, we have a complete change from gardening – John Greene from Gloucester Film Makers is coming along to take us back in time as we watch a selection from his collection of films of old Gloucester. Who knows but one of our older Gloucester-born members just might recognise someone they knew – possibly even themselves as a small child. I am much too young myself..... All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents. HUCCLECOTE SCOUT GROUP The reward for Scouts who helped with the Bag packing, was a trip to the 10 Pin Bowling Centre which all enjoyed. The weather was not good for the Cotswold Marathon (weekend of all the snow) but even so we won three cups. Fastest Under 14’s over 12 miles…. Fastest girls team over 18 miles…….and Fastest over 14’s for 18 miles. Very well done to everyone, unfortunately James who organised our team had a slight accident and had to retire. We have over 50 on this years Summer Camp near Bournemouth, with the visit to Brownsea Island and Absailing….climbing….rifle shooting….archery….zip and high wire plus our usual activities of games and swimming. For those who used to be in the Scouts or Guides we still cook only on open fires with patrols of 6 or 7 boys and girls building their own kitchen areas and making dresser from staves for all their equipment. Inspection with most of their kit out each day and plenty of swimming and games. To listen to Patrol Leaders and their Assistance running camp fires when they are only 12 and 13 years old shows how scouting traditions still work. Many of you will remember the old Bob A Job (worth 5p these days) from many years ago. This year the Scout organisation is asking all Groups to work as a Group in May for the community, we will be doing ours in Hucclecote. Phone Terry on 521664 if you have any one between 6 and 14 who may be interested in joining the Group
Silverdale W.I. The Silverdale W.I started off their new year meeting with a most interesting speaker. Mr Peter Bryant is the Gloucestershire Federation W.I. County Secretary - a most unusual job for a man as Peter explained at the beginning of his talk. His talk was entitled "My Journey to County Secretary" and with the use of a screen Peter showed members how he had progressed from being in the R.A.F. to National Secretary of the Pigeon Fanciers' Association with a detour working for the National Trust on the way. Eventually he interviewed for his present job and, to his surprise got it. For our monthly competition members were asked to bring along their unusual Christmas presents - this provided some very interesting exhibits - the competition being won by Janet Brett with her very royal musical biscuit tin. The vote of thanks was given by Jean Butt who then reminded members that we would not be holding a February meeting owing to problems with our venue. However, we shall meet again on Thursday 15th March at the Hucclecote Methodist Chuirch Hall, Carisbrooke Road, Hucclecote, meeting starting at 10 a,m, Our speaker will be Pam Street on the subject of Women of the Goldrush. All members and visitors welcome.

LENT Ash Wednesday which falls on 22 February marks the beginning of Lent. Traditionally associated with self-denial, Lent is not perhaps the most eagerly anticipated season of the year. Most people feel an obligation to give up some luxury, and many abstain from fattening food and so manage to gain both a feeling of self-righteousness and a physical benefit simultaneously! In any case, there is always the possibility that we can indulge ourselves on Sundays. After all there are 46 calendar days in Lent and everyone knows there should only be 40. But for Christian believers, Lent is a time of reflection and penitence in preparation for Easter. Through the apparently negative aspects of Lent, it becomes a time of spiritual growth. So let’s be positive about Lent – you may find it to be the most rewarding time of the year! Together with all the Hucclecote churches, St Philip and St James has a full programme of Lenten events to provide satisfaction for the soul. There is a Lent course of Bible study at the home groups, the opportunity to enjoy fellowship at special meals on Ash Wednesday (5.30 pm) and a Passover meal on Maundy Thursday (5 April, 7.30 pm). During Holy Week there will be a chance to explore the truly amazing Easter Labyrinth – described as a multi-sensory pilgrimage, but it has to be experienced to understand it. The Good Friday service will be at 10.00 am , and Easter Sunday services are at 8.45 am and 10.30 am, both with Holy Communion.
