The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link

Dear Neighbours,
Welcome to the April edition of your Hucclecote Link. I’d like to say Spring is finally here, but it certainly doesn’t feel like that at the moment! With the clocks having gone forward, the nights are starting to pull out though, so that is a positive. As the weather hopefully starts to improve and with the Easter bank holiday weekend at the start of the month, this is always a time of year when we start to look at the outdoor jobs that we may have neglected over the Winter months. If you are looking for someone to help get your garden back to it’s glory we have plenty of gardeners on hand who can help you - find them all in our index on page 30. Maybe the rendering on your house could do with a clean after the storms that we had over the Winter. Al’s Window Cleaning on page 16 can help brighten your home again with their soft wash system. Perhaps you feel that it is yourself that has been neglected over the Winter months - well we have plenty of beauty therapists & hairdressers, who can put the Spring back in your step. Again you will find the full list on page 30. If you are looking to get out and about, the Hucclecote Community Association opposite have a variety of events taking place over the next couple of months don’t miss out - reserve your tickets now. Congratulations to Mrs Prewer , for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. Have a great month & Happy Easter Sarah.

Dave’s Top Tips PVA adhesive PVA or Polyvinyl Acetate is, in its simplest form, glue for sticking pieces of paper together. One step up the ladder, and a little stronger, it becomes an excellent wood glue for Diy enthusiasts and joiners alike. In its extreme form it becomes an extremely versatile, waterproof adhesive and sealer, which has an extraordinary number of uses in the building trade. PVA can be added to a cement mortar mix to give the mix slightly better waterproofing qualities and advanced adhesion to the surface it is applied to. Painting a coat of PVA on the surface before the cement mortar is applied can even further increase this adhesion. Timber can be sealed with PVA to give it a waterproof quality, although if the surface of the timber is to be subject to any wear or traffic, then PVA, as it is an emulsion, will eventually fail. PVA can also be used to allow ceramic tiles to stick to timber (bath panels etc). At least 3 coats of undiluted PVA are required and each coat must dry thoroughly before the next is applied. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself

Film Releases for April 2018
6th April 2018 Love, Simon
Starring: Nick Robinson, Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Keiynan Lonsdale, Logan Miller, Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, Tony Hale Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it's a little more complicated: he's yet to tell his family or friends he's gay and he doesn't actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he's fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love.
A Quiet Place
Starring: John Krasinski, Emily Blunt A family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you.
Ghost Stories
Starring: Andy Nyman, Paul Whitehouse, Alex Lawther and Martin Freeman Phillip Goodman, professor of psychology, arch-skeptic, the one-man 'belief buster' – has his rationality tested to the hilt when he receives a letter apparently from beyond the grave. His mentor Charles Cameron, the 'original' TV parapsychologist went missing fifteen years before, presumed dead and yet now he writes to Goodman saying that the pair must meet. Cameron, it seems, is still very much alive. And he needs Goodman to find a rational explanation for three stories that have shaken Cameron to his core. As Goodman investigates, he meets three haunted people, each with a tale more frightening, uncanny and inexplicable than the last.
13th April 2018 Rampage
Starring: Dwayne Johnson Primatologist Davis Okoye, a man who keeps people at a distance, shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size. To make matters worse, it's soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals. As these newly created alpha predators tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.
19th April 2018 Grease: 40th Anniversary Re-Issue
Starring: Olivia Newton-John, John Travolta Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Leaving everything she knows behind, Lara goes in search of her dad's last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. Suddenly, the stakes couldn't be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown.

Hucclecote Larkhay WI

Our speaker at our March meeting was Liz Harvey from the charity ‘Maggie’s Centre’ in Cheltenham. She covered all aspects of the charities work from how they are funded (which is all donations and sponsorship from companies, and individuals), the treatment of patients and ‘the open door policy’ that they have. People can just drop in and have tea, cake and biscuits, or to chat to someone if they are feeling low. It is a very special place which offers help to those in need. Our planned outing to see the snowdrops at Colesbourne Park went extremely well. We had a lovely day and we were amazed at how many different species there were (about 250). We ended the day with tea and cake in the café. We have lots of different speakers on many varied subjects. There will also be meals out, coffee mornings, skittles, quiz teams, and cream teas for the warmer weather, so lots of things to look forward to. After all of our speakers we have time to socialise with refreshments. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on 01452 613208 or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just pop in and you would be made very welcome.
Tuesday @ Two What is it?
A social gathering where you can meet your own friends (or make new ones); if you like playing games (Canasta, Scrabble, Rummy Cub) these are available or bring your favourite game with you. The afternoon finishes with home made cake and a cup of tea.
Where is it held?
In the Church Centre, behind the church in Larkhay Road 2 - 4 pm
Is there a charge?
A donation of £1.50 to cover the cost of cake and tea would be appreciated
When does the group meet? Fortnightly - April - 10th & 24th May 8th & 22nd
HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. At each meeting, we have a speaker or demonstration, a raffle, the "bring and buy" sales table, refreshments, and the opportunity to chat and socialise. We also have a series of events and outings planned, including a theatre trip, the monthly Ramblers' walk and the bi-monthly lunch club. Our most recent speaker was Carrie Horwood, who illustrated her talk on "Carving in Stone" with stunning photographs of the work she has undertaken over the years - from sections on Gloucester Cathedral (where she trained), through to house numbers and name plates, calligraphy on stone, clocks and specially commissioned pieces to clients' own designs, all using local stone and Cornish and Welsh slate. In August, Carrie will be involved in the Gloucester Stone Carving Weekend at Llantony Priory. Our next speaker will be Stefan Urbanowski on "Roman Medicine", and the programme of speakers for the forthcoming year will be announced. Guests and visitors are always welcome at Guild meetings. Phone on Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along!
