You’re going on holiday – give your house a holiday too! In the run up to your holiday with a flurry of shopping, packing and deciding who’s going to mind the hamster, it’s easy to overlook some very basic but sensible steps that you should take around the home to make sure disaster doesn’t strike while you are away. Property maintenance company, Bright Sparks, provides one-call property care a boon for people who either don’t have the time or ability to undertake small jobs for themselves or find the hassle of sourcing reliable trades people too much to contemplate. Here, the company suggests some simple tips to keep your home trouble-free and energy efficient while you’re away. 1.
Turn your boiler off – don’t forget to turn off the water heating control as well as the central heating.
2.
If you have an ‘intelligent’ fridge (often called an American fridge) put it into “holiday” mode and don’t forget to do the same with the ice maker.
3.
If you have a standard fridge, turn the temperature setting to ‘low’. If you’re not opening and shutting the door the temperature will remain constant – do the same with your freezer.
4.
Locate your stop cock well before your travel date and remember to turn it off before you leave the house.
5.
Check that all your windows close and lock properly. If they don’t, call in the experts. Your insurance is likely to be invalid if your doors and windows aren’t properly secured.
6.
Unplug your appliances (except the fridge!).
7.
Put some table or standard lamps on a time switch so lights will go on and off while you’re away.
8.
Check your drains and clean out any leaves or other debris which may have accumulated.
9.
Make sure your dustbins are empty.
10.
Mow the lawn before you go!

Flowers, Tubs and Borders Dead head bedding plants on a regular basis to encourage continual flowering Pick sweet pea flowers on a regular basis leaving them will mean they go to seed and you will not have as many new flowers • Cut back Lupins and Delphiniums that have flowered, if you feed them they may give you a second flush of flowers • Continue to water and feed summer tubs containers and baskets and arrange holiday cover if you are going away Dead head roses as the flowers go over this will encourage a second flush of flowers, you can now start to feed and treat with a combined pest and disease treatment to keep the plants healthy thought the summer.

Lawns Water if its dry and there is no hosepipe ban, it’s a good time to liquid feed the lawn if its looking like it needs a fillip, use a high nitrogen liquid feed. You can also ‘spot’ weed those weeds that your early weed and feed fertilizers missed, but be sure you only use a weed killer suitable for use on lawns! Keep the edges trimmed, doing this regularly will keep the shape of your borders and keep your lawn looking neat and tidy.

Fruit and Vegetables Time to harvest early potatoes; check when the flowers are fully open by removing some of the soil if they are about the size of an egg they are ready to harvest. • Water onions if it’s dry to help the bulbs swell up and make good size, keep the weeds down around them to avoid competition. Regularly water and feed tomatoes plants with a high potash tomato food, do not allow them to become water logged. Irregular watering will produce blossom end rot and cause the fruit to split.

unusual summer flowering shrub growing about 4fy high. Rounded in shape and late to come into leaf. From early summer onwards pink/purple pea like flowers cover the arching graceful stems. Requires a free draining soil and sun to bring out the best in the plant. Cut back any dead wood after winter. Hearts and Hurricanes WI June’s meeting, held on Wednesday 13th, was on the subject of Cheese. Liz Godsell of Godsell’s cheese was our speaker. Liz is passionate about making cheese and brought some along to taste, amongst which were ‘Singing Granny’s Sister’, a more mature version of the already mature ‘Granny’s Sister’, and ‘Holy Smoked’. Godsell’s sell their cheese at Stroud Farmers market, Stanman’s Deli in Gloucester and Harrods as well as Waitrose and other local farm shops so we were pleased Liz found time to come and talk to us. We all learnt a fair bit about the history of the company and cheesemaking. It was lovely to welcome some new ladies to the meeting and hopefully, with the help of the ‘Link’ we can become more widely known and other women in the area will come along. In July we are inviting local women to bring along their projects for a ‘Craft and Natter’ evening. Hearts & Hurricanes will start their own embroidery project so don’t worry if you haven’t got something ‘on the go’, we will find you something!
