Dear readers, Thank you.
Thank you for reading what we’ve written, for boosting our egos
with kind words and for making certain we know when we’ve dropped the ball. A newspaper without readers isn’t much of a newspaper at all, so we greatly appreciate your giving us a sense of purpose. You might not know what goes on behind the scenes before you ever get the chance to open a crisp new issue of The Roar, though. Many dedicated staffers made the trek with us to the National Scholastic Press Association convention in San Antonio, TX this past November to hone their skills and learn from experts. Year round, from brainstorming to press, articles pass through the hands of reporters, editors, layout designers and faculty advisers. Approximately 50 staff members contribute to each issue of The Roar in some capacity — and that’s before considering the invaluable input of interviewees. Whether you are a reader, an editor or anything in between, you’ve helped us become better storytellers this year, and to you, we are immensely grateful. As reporters, we’re charged with printing the truth, so here it is, plain and simple: Joining The Roar was among the best decisions of our
Few groups of friends can be depended on to zealously debate proper comma use and in the same breath, sing to you a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday” — but Roar friends can. They’re a great bunch, and we’ve looked forward to spending each Monday J block working with them. For us, however, there will be no more J blocks. Volume 30 is beginning, and with its inception come changes. Senior Staff will shrink from six members to three. While The Roar has been an exclusively extracurricular endeavor in years past, as of fall 2013, staffers will have the opportunity to add a publications course to their schedules and earn academic credit for working on The Roar. There is no doubt in our minds that the staff of Volume 30 will take these changes in stride. We will miss working with them to perfect articles and layouts long after the sun has set on many a school night, and we will miss their smiles in the hallways. But we trust that these journalists no longer require our guidance. Readers, you can be certain that The Roar has great things in store for you as its next chapter begins. Help us out; keep reading, debating and writing in. The newspaper depends on you.

Success The Roar presents a piece addressed to the class of 2013 by custodian and poet John Lawless Success is marching down the halls, tall, with purposed gait. It is on parade, proud and full of the future and the newness of the melancholy of so recent a past. Success in single file of caps and gowns and failures. Ah! But the success of those failures, those moments of fear, of doubt, of “I can’t do this. I can’t be all these things.” athlete, honor roll, musician, mentor, mediator, muse. Failure, the building blocks of success, the glue that holds the success together. Success, that collage of awakenings, that piercing together of failures into a tapestry of truth. The truth of success. The intricate weaving of time and effort and friendship and conflict and fun into patterns never experienced by another. So bask in your success remembering always that success is but failure’s boastful sibling and perseverance failure’s child. graphic by Ravi Panse

GROWING UP The Roar traces the growth of the Class of 2013 from freshman year to the present
A
senior
s freshman year was a year of firsts, this was a year of lasts: last new set of teachers, last chance at DCLs, last days until Senior Slump. We even reached the supposedly final days before the end of the world in December. The final 180 days of school became 150, then 100, now none. We threw our hands in the air as we won Powderpuff fair and square, colored dust as we celebrated Holi and temper tantrums as we fought for our right to eat in the auditorium lobby. The end came too late and too soon at the same time, never seeming to get closer, yet arriving suddenly and without warning. We returned one last obligation slip, wrote one last senior essay and danced one last time at prom. Now it’s time to step back and see the forest for the trees, to see the real world around us and maybe, just once before it all ends, stop to smell the roses.
W
junior
inter had arrived. For most of us, junior year was a time of stress, remembered for its dreaded acronyms: SAT, ACT, GPA and perhaps even AP. Life felt unfair and stressful, and underlying tensions seemed ready to reach a breaking point. Around us, they did. Kony 2012 and the Occupy movement took the world by storm. Yet we managed to survive the bitter cold and cherish the few calm moments in between. We remember the time a group of boys donned cheerleading uniforms at the pep rally and a semi-formal dance that left us with happy memories and a thousand or so Facebook photos. That summer, the London Olympics kept us transfixed as Aly Raisman, the girl from the town next door, showed us it wasn’t crazy to dream big. We left junior year tired but satisfied, feeling prepared for any challenge ahead of us, buds ready to bloom.
S
sophomore
ophomore year felt like it started right where freshman year had left off; the same hallways were crowded with strangers, and 7:40 a.m. still seemed just as obscenely early. We danced together in the Square Off and again at Sophomore Sleepover. We moaned at the long composition MCAS and dreaded the public speaking nightmare that is the Sophomore Speech. Ultimately, it was a year of new mixed with familiar; the same halls felt less wide and endless, and the high school world we’d come to know felt smaller and more normal. Yet around us the world shook. We saw the effects of the Arab Spring and the vote to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. We watched and waited in a world where seedlings of dissatisfaction and unrest blossomed into revolts and protest all around us, unsure of anything except for the familiar presence of constant change.
I
freshman
t was a year of new beginnings. The first African-American president finished up his inaugural year in office, Apple announced the release of its new iPad and we began our lives as high school students. Some of us awkwardly mingled at the Ice Cream Social clutching pre-packaged ice cream sandwiches. In the first few months of the year we tried our hands at sports, theater, ping-pong club and a variety of other extracurriculars (some of us more successfully than others). We danced aboard a luxury sea vessel during Freshman Cruise and did our best not to feel seasick. We mourned the devastating earthquake in Haiti and the BP oil spill, disasters that shook the American and international communities to their cores. Freshman year taught us that it can be hard to plant a seed in rough soil. Somehow, however, we made it through with our roots intact.
