I

’m not one for New Year’s resolutions. At least, not ones made to punish ourselves, to make up for Christmas or to deny ourselves something we actually quite like (did someone say wine?). For me, a new year is a blank slate – an empty twelve months to be filled with anything I choose. Last year is gone, this one is where it’s at! Though, with a year like 2020 it’s hard not to let its effects reach beyond December 31st - especially as our day-to-day situations look much the same.

a new year is a blank slate – an empty twelve months to be filled with anything I choose So, this New Year I’m planning to fill my blank twelve months with lessons learned from lockdown. Here they are. 1. See people! Once we are allowed to meet with friends and family again, I’m going to become a serial socialiser. And woe betide those not into physical contact. Hugging, for an awkwardly long period of time, will be very much on the cards. I shall never elbow-bump again. 2. Immerse yourself in nature. I’m a bona-fide forest bather now (it’s a thing, look it up). Dogs and child in tow, me and The Husband will climb more hills, discover the wild places, swim in rivers and let the great outdoors be our entertainment. 3. The UK is

where it’s at. OK, I’d love to be somewhere a little hotter, where the food is a little more exotic, but choosing to explore our varied and breathtaking shores fills me with excitement and romance. The mountains of Wales, the coastline of Northumbria, the wilds of Dartmoor – they are calling to me! 4. Food matters. Lockdown part one was a lesson in frugality and creativity. We made our own bread (we always have but the weapo n-like hardness of our dense loaves made them perfect for the impending social collapse), we took time to cook together, all our food came from local, independent providers and we didn’t waste anything. So, that’s us. What are your plans for 2021? Whatever they are, I hope they bring you hope, happiness and a whole load of physical contact! One more thing. This is our fifth issue since pausing through lockdown. I’m staggered by the support The List has had, and the warmth with which each issue is received. To my advertisers I would like to say a heartfelt thank you. Frome isn’t short of incredible businesses, and when you advertise with us, your small business is supporting mine. And thank you to my readers. Your feedback to me, support of my advertisers, and general feeling of communal ownership of the publication makes me feel the strength of the community. Our wonderful community of Frome.

S

uper Fundraiser Rachel Clark is marking 10 years of supporting cancer counselling charity We Hear You (WHY) by taking on a challenge every single month in 2021 and is calling on you, the Frome community to get involved. Rachel has raised more than £55,000 for WHY, organised a successful Guinness world record attempt in 2018, ran a mile every single day in 2019 and was named Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year in the national Institute of Fundraising Awards in May 2020. “2021 will mark the 10th anniversary of my mum’s death, and therefore the 10th anniversary of my fundraising,” says Rachel. “I’ll be bringing you twelve challenges for WHY - one per month - that many of you can join in with. Due to the pandemic, some of the challenges will be virtual, but I hope that by the spring our WHY supporters can start getting together again! The year of challenges will be launched on Saturday 2nd Januay (on my mum’s birthday), so dust off those WHY t-shirts! More details coming very soon so keep an eye out through WHY or me on social media!”.

Small & Affordable at B l ac k Swa n A rt s

Black Swan Arts has launched ‘Small and Affordable’, a fundraising pop-up exhibition, showcasing beautiful and unique artwork which is available to buy online and from the art centre’s new creative space on Bridge Street in Frome.

Like many organisations in the creative sector, Black Swan Arts has been hit hard by the pandemic. It is a registered charity and currently receives no external funding, so relies heavily on volunteers and supporters.

The work on sale has been kindly donated by Black Swan Arts’ loyal and talented community of artists, and 100% of the profits will go to support the running of the organisation. The show is called ‘Small and Affordable’ because all artworks will be less than 30 x 30 x 30 cm in size, and cost less than £300, in recognition of the fact that many of us are struggling financially in these difficult times. There is a huge variety of 2D and 3D work on offer including painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics.

To view the exhibition, which runs until January 30th, go to www.blackswanarts.org.uk. Your support is vital in enabling this vibrant community arts centre to continue serving the people of Frome.

y now, most of you will know the bouncy curls, bright leotard and oversized specs of Frome’s aerobics queen, Cheryl Sprinkler, from Mojo Moves. Cheryl got Frome moving, and laughing, with her unique form of comedy aerobics back in 2018 and has gone on to raise funds for charity, lead troops of hundreds and kept Fromies going through lockdown with her online classes. Behind the curls and glasses is hardworking mum Ginny Adams, who has been a professional comedy performer for over 30 years. “I never thought I would start running a fitness business in my late forties!” says Ginny. “I studied exercise to music to enable me to teach proper classes. So, as well as being good fun, the sessions are a really good workout!” Cheryl is a body positive warrior who empowers people to feel good about themselves. “Even people who know me as Ginny call me Cheryl and play along when I’m dressed up. It sounds daft but I feel more comfortable and confident dressed up as an alter ego!” Mojo Moves also work with children and teens and have seen great results in improving confidence.

“Recently, a regular Mojo Mover told me the classes were a real tonic for the soul, and I can totally agree.” The dancing is joyful and full of power, drama and emotion, as well as being funny. Every week Ginny creates new routines and playlists. The music is an eclectic mix from multiple genres and eras - not just the 80’s - and carefully curated into a mood enhancing playlist. The new HIIT to the Hits classes run three times a week, at 8am. HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training, and these short fifteen minute sessions give a real boost to your mood and energy for the whole day. “ I wish I could start every day with you, it does me so much good! Thank you for being there for us all so spectacularly. You’re casting so much light into the darkness.” Esmé Patey-Ford

House Proud or many people, the new year is the perfect time to plan those long-awaited changes or improvements to your home. With a vast number of us working from home over the last nine

months, those niggling little jobs, like flaking paint work, noisy boilers or worn carpet, have become even more apparent, as has the need to make our homes more aesthetically pleasing as we are spending far more time in them. Or maybe you are moving house and need a little inspiration to see yourself, and your family, putting your own stamp on your new home. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start, so we’ve gathered some of Frome’s best homes and interiors companies together to take the leg-work out of looking around, and to help get you inspired.

Baxter

Geoff Hunt

The little interiors and homewares shop, Baxter has only been in Frome for eighteen months, but has been taking the area by storm, with a wide selection of eclectic and affordable homewares. The shop is filled with constantly evolving collections of vintage finds and new products, and owner Charles Prior is regularly adding new ranges to the mix. These include beautiful hand-poured candles by Russell and White, and a new collection of luxurious feather-filled cushions, perfect for adding a comfortable dash of opulence to any space. Since lockdown, Charles has been focusing on bringing affordable interiors to Frome, investing in fabric and wallpaper collections and partnering with Graphenstone paints to bring you the very best eco-friendly, sustainable paint on the market. The incredible paint brand, no more expensive than other premium brands, has won innumerable awards and shows the way forward in paint manufacture. Stop by for a paint chart, a candle, or a chat with Charles. Expect a very warm welcome.

As a FRICS Chartered Building Surveyor with a construction background, Geoff Hunt is often invited along on one of the most amazing times in people’s life journey: buying a home. Homes form part of people’s dreams and ambitions and set the ground plan for the future. Geoff’s aim is to travel alongside clients to ensure they get the right level of information in a simple, focused and easy to understand language, helping them to make informed decisions and discover the full potential in their new home. Always on hand for solicitors with advice and clarification, Geoff provides more than a survey. He provides safe and steady assurance at a time when people are making big decisions that will change their lives. Clients can also tap into his detailed knowledge of building history to understand how their proposals and dreams can be realised. Geoff is passionate about period property, the history of construction and the reasons why we use buildings the way we do. This passion has led him to research and publish The Architectural Timeline, which is now an industry standard reference.

William Rose Group H e ave n fo r yo u r H o m e

T

he William Rose Group has been constantly evolving its services since it first opened the doors of its flagship business, The Wooden Flooring Studio, on Badcox in 2016. Run by Terry and Nikki Parker, the company was born from a passion for fine woodwork and high quality interiors. Terry’s background is in carpentry, and he started the Wooden Flooring Studio in Radstock nine years ago, in a small unit affectionately named ‘The Shack’. Nikki could see how passionate Terry was about his new venture, but could also see that there was no way it was going to grow without some help. She quit her job on the spur of the moment, and came home to announce to a surprised (but thrilled!) Terry that she was going to put all her time and effort into the studio, so they could build their future together.

Loving their hometown of Frome, both were desperate to bring the business here. “Our hearts always were, and always will be, in Frome,” Nikki told us. Driving past Badcox that New Year, a sign had just gone up on the Vallis Way shop front; they stopped, called the agent

and took the gamble to bring their business home. When they opened the Badcox shop, the Wooden Flooring Studio housed both the wooden flooring and paint businesses, with the building next door a derelict mess. As the business grew, the space became tighter and tighter. Terry and Nikki persuaded the landlord to let them rent the building next door...but it would need just a little modernising (a huge understatement). Eighteen months of hard work later, the Rose Garden launched with Little Greene, joined by a host of other fantastic brands. William Rose has gone from being just Terry, to being an eleven-strong team. With Sue, Jennie and Faye in the showroom, the teams of floor fitters headed up by Todd and Rhys, and Nikki and Terry at the helm. Both the Wooden Flooring Studio and the Rose Garden run on the basis that the service, and the breadth of products, offered are of the very highest quality. There’s always a friendly ear and guiding hand, offering help in what can feel like a daunting process. From colour consultations for inspiration, to taking time to pour over wallpaper

and fabric books, or answering questions and queries - making sure customers feel welcome and well looked after is the number one priority. “We’ve been so overwhelmed with the support that we’ve had, and are always incredibly grateful to be part of such an amazing community that is always behind their local businesses. We’ve seen this more than ever during this crazy year.” The Wooden Flooring Studio Nikki, Jennie, Sue and Faye are all based in the showroom and have extensive knowledge of all the wooden flooring products and treatments. This is a relaxed, informal space, where people are always welcome to come and browse. The aim is for everyone to feel at home, and free to ask anything they need. “We get to know our customers really well when we work with them,” says Nikki. “They can borrow boards and samples to take home, and we are always here to talk ideas through. Bespoke flooring especially can be a lengthy process and we’re there every step of the way.” The Rose Garden Rose Garden is a one-stop shop for colour design and consultation, paints wallpapers and fabrics. Everyone on the team is well versed in all of the products on offer, and in the ranges of fabrics and wallpapers. They also offer inhouse tinting services for Mylands and Designers Guild. In Spring 2021, the business will be expanding once again: “The opportunity arose to go next door again, to a bigger, brighter space, showcasing more of the ranges of flooring, with more samples from the different brands we work with including ESCO, Woodpecker, Tedd Todd and our new bespoke range too.” The Rose Garden will also be expanding, utilising both sides of the current showroom. “We’ll be doubling our space to make more room for our design services, colour

consultations, and to browse the beautiful collections of wallpapers, fabrics and paint colours we have in store from brands like Zoffany, Sanderson, Morris and Co, Mylands, Farrow and Ball, Little Greene, Paint Paper Library, Cornish Milk and so many more.” Beyond The Rose Garden and The Wooden Flooring Studio Under the name The William Rose Group, Terry and Nikki have brought together The Wooden Flooring Studio and The Rose Garden with their other business, working in the Homes and Interiors industry. These companies all complement each other and often work together on projects. Headed up by Terry and Clare with a dedicated team of builders, Frome Design and Build tailor each project to help clients with as much or as little of the process as they need. It came from a desire to offer a different breed of building company. “We’ll never treat a home project as a ‘site’ ” said Terry, “it always remains a home, and we put as much time, energy and passion into each project as if it were our own.” Offering a host of different services, from design and planning to project management, Frome Design and Build can help customers with as much of the process as they need. Another side to the group is White Rose Electrical, an in house company that works on all Frome Design and Build projects as well as stand alone electrical projects. Headed up by Shaun White and his experienced team.

Celeriac Soup Makes enough for a couple of large flasks, or 6 people. 1 small or half a large celeriac head, about 600g, peeled and diced fairly small 1 medium onion (200g), diced fairly small

Cook & Eat Recipes from our resident Foodie Laura Coate

W

hen I conjure to mind Januarys past, I remember clear, crisp days, bleak, bare branched trees and ground which crunches and splutters underfoot. Days to make chilled noses drip and pink hands pine for forgotten gloves. I’m a perpetual glove neglecter. (I follow the same trait with umbrellas on rainy days too.) To my credit though, I often remember to pack something warming for our winter walks, so there will at least be a cup of something around which I can wrap my iced fingers. My culinary training began one freezing January in West Cork, Ireland. The first thing we were taught was a basic soup technique and we practised it daily. Naturally enough, it includes a sensible amount of dairy and a comforting proportion of potato (both foodstuffs for which Ireland is famous) and suits almost any root vegetable. Celeriac is the knobbly, whiskered root relative of celery. More softly aniseed in flavour, it makes a silky soup and one which (helpfully, at this time of year) is complimented beautifully by creamy, salty flavours, or smoky, toasted ones.

1 large, or 2 small floury potatoes (200g), such as Maris Piper or King Edward, peeled and diced fairly small 75g butter Salt and pepper 1.2l stock (chicken or vegetable) 100ml to 200ml full fat milk or cream, depending on levels of comfort required To garnish (any of the following): Blue cheese, crumbled Hazelnuts, toasted, skinned and chopped Smoked ham, shredded or crispy smoked bacon Melt the butter in a large pan and when it begins to fizz, tip in the onion and potato, stir and season with salt and pepper. Place a lid on the pan (plus, for perfectly sweated vegetables, a piece of baking paper cut to the size of your pan and pressed down on top of the vegetables, before the lid goes on) and cook for 10 minutes. Check on it halfway through, just to make sure the potato isn’t sticking. Add the celeriac, giving the the vegetables a good stir, followed by the stock. Bring the liquid to the boil, then turn the heat down and place the lid (but not the paper) back on the pan. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the celeriac is completely tender. PurÊe the soup until completely smooth and return it to the pan. Add the milk or cream until the soup is to your desired consistency, then taste and season. Pour into receptacles and top with your preferred garnish.

ROLL OVER, CAPTAIN MAINWARING Th e Fr o m e Fo s s i l

L

ong long ago my eldest sister landed her first job. She found a flat she could just afford, but she still needed a few essentials – a saucepan, knives and forks, a tin opener. Where would she get the money for them? Should she apply for a bank loan? This was, in those, days, a momentous step. She turned to my father for guidance. “Do you think the bank manager would mind?”, she asked. My father looked at her weightily. “I’ve got one piece of advice,” he replied. “Always treat your bank manager with contempt.” Now, no-one could have called my father antiEstablishment. Far from it. He was achingly respectable – a pillar of the business community, a churchwarden, a loyal Conservative and a doer of good works. But this was the early Sixties, and things were beginning to loosen up a bit. The old gods, including Etonian Prime Ministers, sleek lawyers, puce rear admirals and canting archbishops, were losing their mystical glow. Suddenly it was OK to laugh at them, question their authority and generally blow raspberries. And bank managers were right there in the line of fire. Everyone had seen them as wielders of enormous power, the power of money. Now, unmasked, they turned out to be rather sad little folk (remember, Captain Mainwaring first appeared on our TV screens in 1968). So my father had no difficulty in treating them with contempt. By which he meant: don’t grovel for a loan, just demand one. Their job is to lend you money: that’s how banks make profits. This attitude did him no harm at all, as a series of unctuous bank managers fell over themselves to renew his loans and extend his overdrafts. It worked for my sister, too, who soon got her cutlery. But for me the magic never quite rubbed off. I spent most of my life as a professional hack, and my earnings were erratic, and often laughable.

Bank managers scratched their heads in bafflement. Most gave me stern lectures, but they still lent me money. One chubby little fellow took me out to lunch in a desperate attempt to understand my eccentric finances. But even he gave up. At the end of the meal he threw his pudgy hands in the air and said: “Just think, one day when you’re a respectable citizen we’ll both laugh about this!” I bet he’s not laughing now.

Congratulations!

You have bought the house of your dreams. With help from Estate Agents who kept it all moving, Solicitors who made sure all the Ts were crossed and Surveyors who allowed you to see the true potential. You have the keys and the confidence to make it all yours.

Geoffrey Hunt. Proud to be part of the local team.

I would like to issue an apology to anyone offended by the wording of my advert in the December issue of The List. It was not my intention to cast aspersions on the conduct of any Frome Estate Agents
