ABOUT THE GUIDE Hey, hot stuff! If you’re hoping to improve your life—and look great doing it—you’ve come to the right place. In this issue of The List’s annual Health & Beauty guide, we’ve taken a closer look at what really constitutes beauty. Surprise, surprise: there’s more to it than appearances alone. We’ve quizzed experts about maintaining family health (p.30), the methods behind Traditional Chinese Medicine (p.32) and also snapped up some tips and tricks from foodie parents on children’s nutrition (p.28). A healthy body is just as important, so we’ve rounded up the city’s top gyms (p.52) and martial arts studios (p.54), as well as asked a couple of trainers for quick and dirty workouts (p.44). Of course, it wouldn’t be a beauty guide if we didn’t direct you to a few of our favorite grooming gurus. We have a long list of mani-pedi maestros (p.24) and seriously relaxing spas (p.16) where you can pamper yourself silly. Stay beautiful, Kate Springer Senior Editor

Special Treatment Looking for something a bit different from your next massage? From seashells to grass jelly, Kate Springer and Andrea Lo test-drive a few unusual spa treatments around town.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa by Espa The Treatment: Shell Power Treatment The Aim: As part of Ritz-Carlton’s new Spring Revival series, the 80-minute Shell Power massage and facial treatment is all about prepping skin for the changing seasons. This time of year, many people battle allergies as well as irritated skin. The treatment uses blue, tiger-striped clam shells for a relaxing massage, working powerful Espa skin products into your skin. The Experience: From start to finish, the spa at the Ritz-Carlton is pampering at its plushest. Be sure to get there early to enjoy the relaxing steam rooms and take in the sweeping view of the harbor. The treatment itself is a luxurious experience: expect a delicious back massage using heated lava shells, which apparently release natural calcium 4 HEALTH, BEAUTY & Fitness GUIDE 2015

ions into the skin. Next comes a one-hour facial, using Espa’s Optimal Ski ProCleanser range—full of natural ingredients including moringa seed extract and pumpkin enzymes. This time, the shells are chilled: it’s a little bit of a shock at first but your skin adjusts quickly for a more awake, refreshed complexion. The Takeaway: We’re not sure if it’s the lush surrounds or the hot and cold treatment, but something about an occasional splurge at the Ritz-Carlton Spa really does the body good. Available until June 30, from $1,980. 116/F, The Ritz-Carlton, ICC, 1 Austin Road West, West Kowloon, 2263-2040, www.ritzcarlton.com

The Peninsula Spa The Treatment: Sattva Vedic Aromatherapy Body Massage The Aim: The new Sattva by Simply Peninsula series is an aromatherapy-driven practice that uses hand-blended Vedic Aromatherapy oils to balance out your prana, aka life force, while the massage treatment uses a whole range of approaches—think acupressure, remedial massage, reflexology, lymph drainage, and even a traditional bronze Kasa bowl to iron out knots and draw toxins from the body. The Experience: Any kind of “personality”based spa treatment is always extra fun, but this one is grounded in Vedic tradition, employing 5,000-year-old practices that combat fatigue, ease muscle soreness and decrease anxiety. While sipping on your welcome tea, you’ll be invited to fill out a personality and physical trait form that will determine which kind of oil blend the therapist uses. We went with the 60-minute Sattva Vedic Aromatherapy Massage, which keeps things interesting by using a mix of several different massage strategies and special attention to your marma-pressure points.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa by Espa

The Takeaway: It’s not exactly breaking news to say that The Peninsula has one of the city’s best spas, but the new Sattva treatment range takes it to another level. From $1,500. The Peninsula Hong Kong, Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, 2696-6682, www.peninsula.com

Melo Spa at the Hyatt Regency, Sha Tin The Treatment: Royal Jelly Facial Treatment The Aim: The Hyatt Regency Sha Tin has just launched a variety of treatments using products by Ainhoa, a Spanish skincare label that aim to protect your skin from stress and environmental factors. The 60- and 90-minute treatments on offer all aim to bring something different to the massage table. The Royal Jelly Facial Treatment, in particular, aims to treat dehydration in skin. What exactly is royal jelly, you ask? It’s a secretion from honey bees, jam-packed with Vitamin B and minerals, and helps to decrease those irritating blemishes on your skin. The Experience: Melo Spa’s facial therapist begins the treatment with a consultation, assessing our skin type and talking through our daily skincare regime, as well as discussing common skin issues we experience. She identified the problems in our skin—particularly its oily and dry combination—and began the treatment by first tackling the blemishes, gently clearing out blackheads and whiteheads. After that, we had the soothing royal jelly lotion applied. A facial steamer, which serves to open up pores and cleanse the dirt and oil often trapped within, worked its way through. The treatment ended with a relaxing head and shoulder massage. The Takeaway: Surrounded by the quiet, peaceful environs of Sha Tin, with an allencompassing view of Tolo Harbour, the Melo Spa is worth the journey for busy city dwellers looking to relax. You’ll walk out practically glowing, with your skin feeling much smoother. $980 for 60 minutes. Partnered with HYPOXI

An innovative approach to

targeted weight loss Why is it that even with a regular regime and healthy, balanced diet, many people complain that excess weight, especially in problem areas such as around the waist for men, and thighs and hips for women, is almost impossible to shift?

What they don’t realize is that these problem areas typically have a lower blood circulation (and therefore temperature) than other areas, e.g. the upper parts of the body. There’s a simple test you can try yourself which can demonstrate the strength of the blood supply to certain areas of your body. After 30 minutes of exercise, touch the skin around your legs, buttocks, hips, stomach and chest. You will notice that some areas feel warm, while others remain cold. The cooler the skin’s surface, the poorer the blood supply is to the tissue in that area, which in turn suggests it will be harder to burn fat there. And this is the reason for many people’s frustration. Because as far as these stubborn, fat-bearing areas are concerned, working out alone simply cannot always do the job. General exercise will not increase the blood circulation in certain areas. Therefore minimal targeted weight/ circumference loss is possible. One solution is to combine moderate exercise with an over and under pressure therapy in the affected area, to stimulate blood circulation in the problem areas. This has been proven to ultimately result in a targeted weight / circumference loss. It is a program based around these principles that has made one company, HYPOXI, a worldwide success since 1998. The three elements of the HYPOXI-Method include vacuum therapy, similar to the ancient technique of cupping, in that certain areas of the body are stimulated through the application of low pressure; compression therapy, in during which high pressure is applied to the tissue (also commonly used in the treatment of varicose veins); and moderate fat burning exercise, which has the effect of stimulating the

transport of fatty acids, thereby promoting fat metabolism. The HYPOXI-Method targets undesired fat deposits through the unique combination of alternating pressure therapy and moderate fat burning activity. The change in pressure effectively stimulates blood flow and accelerates the transport of fatty acids from these regions. The result is a targeted and long lasting circumference reduction from the problematic areas, which also has the benefit of reducing the appearance of cellulite, toning and tightening the skin and improving the complexion. In case you are still puzzled by what HYPOXI can do, these frequently asked questions may help: • How does it work and is it scientifically proven? Yes, HYPOXI is the unique and scientifically proven method that helps accelerate the rate at which fatty acids can be metabolized in order to help you lose weight. The machine uses a vacuum technique to increase blood flow to the lower half of the body to burn stubborn fat and reduce cellulite. Until now, it could not be proven that any method systematically and preferentially reduced body fat in specific body areas. However, the effect of conventional endurance training on the reduction of fat pads can be increased by alternating positive and negative pressure in target areas such as the areas around the abdomen and hips or the thighs. In fact independent studies have proven HYPOXI to be three-times more effective in circumference loss than conventional exercise. • Is HYPOXI safe? Yes, HYPOXI is all-natural and therefore totally safe. Moreover, the increased blood circulation

and metabolism rate will also support your well-being—so it’s super healthy. • How popular is HYPOXI? The system is loved and used by A-class celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole, Mel B and Robbie Williams. Today HYPOXI is the world market leader of body shaping equipment with studios in more than 45 countries. • Does HYPOXI offer a free trial? Yes! So if you want to experience this unique approach yourself book in for a free trial. Contact Details www.hypoxi.com.hk

Foundations of Youth

The search for eternal youth may be nothing more than a myth, but there’s still plenty you can do to look and feel young.

Most people don’t know how to protect their skin from simple everyday threats, such as air pollution

8 HEALTH, BEAUTY & Fitness GUIDE 2015

efying ageing is a lifelong battle, but it’s a simple fact that as we get older nature will take its course. As we age, our skin undergoes considerable changes. The onset of wrinkles, spots and dryness are natural signs that the skin has begun a transformation. That said the question remains: can we defy skin ageing? The answer to that milliondollar question is a resounding yes! In Ancient Egypt Cleopatra was famous for her beautiful skin. Admittedly, her secret was that she soaked in baths of fresh milk. Now maybe that’s taking the quest for youthful looks a bit too far, but there’s a plethora of things you can do to offset the ravages of time. To maintain your skin’s glow and texture while fighting wrinkles it’s important to recognize factors that can contribute to the ageing process, such as stress and the effects of the sun. It also helps to get plenty of exercise, enough sleep and add more Omega 3 foods to your diet. Another simple tip is to believe in the power of retinoids, which are a derivative of Vitamin A and can smooth wrinkles and clear brown spots efficiently. But remember, it’s essential that you consult a doctor for professional advice before undertaking any form of anti-ageing or sensitive skin treatment. A good starting point for healthy skin is learning to recognize the causes of skin ageing. Most people don’t know how to protect their skin from simple everyday threats, such as air pollution.

Air pollution also can cause acne-like eruptions or allergic reactions, including inflammation, redness or eczema. There is actually a higher prevalence of sensitive skin reported in polluted cities. Skincare products can be a useful method of protection. A general strategy may involve the use of mild rinse-off products, such as shampoo and shower gel to clean pollution from the skin. Skin protection by means of BB creams or foundation is another option, while the use of sunscreens to block UV radiation and to prevent photoreactive compounds reacting on UV exposure is also advisable. Dr Kong Ching-boon is a Hong Kong-based doctor working in the cosmetic field

Top Tips: • Enjoy a diet rich in antioxidants by eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables • Quit smoking • Avoid outdoor activities when there’s heavy pollution • Employ stress management at all times

istory points to the idea that good skin is at the heart of true beauty, whatever a person’s perception. After all, some of the most iconic beauties throughout history thought it essential to have milky, flawless skin. Xi Shi, the first of the four legendary beauties of Chinese history, was said to be so entrancing that when she came upon fish, they would forget how to swim and sink away when seeing her reflection in the water, hiding in the depths rather than face comparison with the famed Chinese goddess of beauty. The fact that the Xi Shi legend has survived more than two millennia is testament to her lasting influence; even in modern day China any woman is flattered if likened to Xi Shi. So what secrets can today’s women learn from the past, and from Xi Shi in particular? For younger looking skin, take a tip from Xi Shi’s winning formula. She maintained perfect skin by applying a mix of natural extracts, including mung beans and herbs. While Xi Shi’s mythological secrets may have faded through the annals of time, the basics are simple and modern science has adapted the concepts of a bygone era and developed ideal products designed for 21st century women.

Cleopatra’s Secret: Just in case you remain unconvinced, perhaps you should check out Cleopatra, another heavyweight in the beauty realm. The mysterious Queen of the Nile was known for her exquisite looks and luxurious demanding beauty routine. Cleopatra was the keeper of several magic beauty secrets and maintained her gorgeous skin thanks to bathing in milk, which would involve mixing the milk of a young donkey with fresh honey and almond oil. One of her best-kept secrets was that she would sleep with a golden mask on her face, while she also used a green grape and honey mix as a facial to reduce overtanned skin, a sea salt scrub to exfoliate her body and face, and apple cider vinegar to regulate pH levels. And don’t forget, beauty is synonymous with a healthy lifestyle and diet. Foods should be selected on the basis of their properties and benefits; green tea, ginseng, cherries, rice, cucumber, avocado and Chinese mushrooms all help combat the ageing process.

Better with Age It might seem like movie stars are simply blessed with eternally youthful good looks, but it’s not all play and no work. You can age gracefully too, if you do something about it.

O

kay, so there are the lucky ones out there who simply seem to get better with age; they seem to mature like a good wine. The entertainment industry may have you believe that it’s just a fact of life. But in reality, that’s not the case. Someone that falls into that category is ageless movie star Johnny Depp, the one-time teen idol who since becoming a Hollywood A-lister has taken on a string of challenging and larger-than-life roles. He celebrates his 52nd birthday in June and still has the power to make women go weak at the knees. Some people are born with good looks that last, but take heart, the graceful agers aren’t ageing better than the rest of us mere mortals, they’re just ageing smarter. Here in Hong Kong we have a number of movie stars who shine when it comes to post 50s. They exude a youthful aura by following simple but meticulous Asian beauty routines. Popular local actress Carina Lau, who hits 50 in December, keeps herself looking young by getting enough rest and exercising five days a week to boost her metabolism and improve her mood. Fellow Hong Kong movie icon Cherie Chung started in the business after taking part in the 1979 Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant. The actress,

dubbed the Marilyn Monroe of Hong Kong because of her good looks, starred in more than 50 films over a 12-year career before stepping back from the limelight to get married. Amazingly she is now 55. Lau and Chung are both renowned for their lasting beauty and flawless skin; perfect examples of how to age gracefully.

Cherie Chung sits pretty at 55

Some basics you can follow to maintain flawless skin: • A clean diet, with plenty of water, sleep and exercise is essential for healthy skin • Always remove makeup before going to bed • Cleanse daily and exfoliate two or three times a week • Maintain balanced pH levels by using a toner • Use hydrating and energizing face masks • Don’t be afraid to moisturize. Apply from the center of the face in upward motions • When outdoors, slap on plenty of sunscreen

BruneBlonde BruneBlonde was brought to Hong Kong from France in 2013 by founders Roland Boutin and David Gouygou. Especially great at coloring, BruneBlonde can handle blonde strands better than many Hong Kong salons. Blowdrys here will cost you a pretty penny—they come in a series of six, which costs $2,106; or a series of 15, which starts at $4,680. But hey, at least your hair will look good on at least six different occasions. The salon also does nails, makeup, eyebrow shaping and scalp treatments. The Firm The Test Subject: Kate Springer The Place: One of Hong Kong’s oldest and most popular hair salons, The Firm overlooks Graham Street’s graffiti in Central. The modern, open space is flooded with light thanks to big floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows, which are especially great for admiring a new hair color. And The Firm does more than hair, too, with a dedicated area for mani-pedis, massages and waxing services. Thanks to removable salon stations, the space can also transform into a venue for parties or product launches. me what I need: natural on top, with sunny streaks towards my ends—an effect that can be achieved with a balayage. That’s the “it” hair coloring technique of the moment, as natural roots mean easy maintenance. Sandy used a vertical tin-foil strategy, so I had some metal dreadlocks for a spell. My bangs came out a little too blonde, but Sandy adjusted them as soon as I mentioned. The end result was just what I wanted. The Takeaway: When it comes to great hair— and great view of SoHo—The Firm stands firmly among our top Hong Kong salons. Hipp Fish Family-run business Hipp Fish has been around since the late 90s, specializing in blonde, curly, and afro styling, as well as providing services for made-to-order hair extensions, temporary weaves and Brazilian Keratin treatments. The List was really impressed at a recent cut and color: a resident stylist did some much-needed root touchups, carefully applying the dye to make sure it was a perfect match. After that, a quick yet precise trim left our locks looking fresh. Prices are pretty reasonable to boot: cut and styling for women starts at $500 up to $1,200 from a director. 1-2/F, 32 Staunton St., Central, 2815-3638, www.hippfish.com

Eating healthy in Hong Kong can be a tricky business—especially when you have little mouths to feed. Kate Springer asks four Hong Kong parents in the food industry about balancing their families’ diets. Meet the Masters: Nealy Fischer:

Todd Darling:

The founder and director of Mayya + Movement (mayyamovement.com), Nealy runs wellness events, writes a blog and develops healthy recipes. She’s a mom of four: Ben, 13; Eitan, 11; Ayla, 7; and Liam, 2.

Owner of Homegrown Foods (www.homegrownfoods.com.hk), Posto Pubblico, Linguini Fini and Stone Nullah Tavern, Todd weighs in on eating healthy in Hong Kong. His son Axel is just over 2 months old.

Priscilla Soligo:

Julie Tuan:

Priscilla’s the chef and founder of Raiz The Bar (raizthebar.com), a Hong Kong-based chocolate company with a focus on high-quality, nutrition-rich ingredients. She has two kids: 5-year-old Luca and 21-month-old daughter Mya.

Co-owner and co-founder of Lola’s Ice Pops, Julie is all about pumping healthy, guilt-free ingredients into traditionally sweet treats. She has two kids: Evelyn, 5, and Ethan, 1.

the week and then make salads that are enough to eat for two to three days for lunch. Most of what goes into the salads is organic, and I save money by buying from reputable suppliers in large quantities.

Nealy Fischer: It is hard to get into the groove of cooking. But once you start, it is so rewarding. Even things as basic as chopping salads and making dressings means you have something to fall back on in your fridge. Priscilla Soligo: I set some time aside each week to pre-make things. I’ll make anything from raw protein cookies and raw kale chips, to baked breakfast bars and raw dips for veggie crudités, which I take to work at our chocolate factory. Being prepared and organized makes life a whole lot easier. Keep it fresh. Keep it delicious. Keep it whole foods without the herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and chemicals—get organic where you can. Todd Darling: Prepare food in bulk at home. I cook farro, quinoa, or other whole grains in a rice cooker for 28 HEALTH, BEAUTY & Fitness GUIDE 2015

Julie Tuan: We try to eat at home as opposed to going out, and make all our food from fresh ingredients. We hardly use jarred, canned or dried items—and also no processed foods. When we go out to eat as a family I always try to bring some food or snacks from home as well, such as cut-up fruit, cheese or yogurt, so that the kids aren’t just filling up on French fries. The List: What’s your family’s go-to healthy snack? PS: We are big green juicers in my family, and we also consume yummy plant-based smoothies using the likes of spinach, kale and dark green lettuce. This is the only way you can pack your greens in without

sitting at the table for hours trying to chew (let’s face it—no kid wants to do that!). There are some fantastic organic delivery companies too, if you’d prefer not to make the trek. NF: I am not a huge fan of snacking but when you or the kids need something quick, here are my suggestions: raw almonds, raw veggie chips or raw crackers, dark chocolate, celery and almond butter, or hummus and veggies. JT: Both my kids love all kinds of fruit. I can also get them to eat veggie sticks dipped in almond butter. The List: Where do you shop? NF: I use i-Herb (www.iherb.com) for great prices, a huge selection of food and supplement staples, and reliable delivery; Just Green for my local in-a-pinch snacks, supplements and ingredient staples; Green Vitamin (www.greenvitamin.hk) for fresh kale and my Happy Cow ice cream; Oliver’s for weekly basics and organic produce; and Gonzalo (www.gonzalo.hk) for grass-fed beef and chicken delivered to your doorstep. PS: The Lions Nature Education Centre VMO farmers market is open every Saturday and Sunday in Sai Kung. It is government-regulated, and 100 percent of everything sold has been locally grown in Hong Kong—plus it is incredibly affordable! TD: Well, I’m extremely discerning about what I buy, eat and feed to my family. Unless it’s an occasion and I’m out to eat or doing my usual dim sum routine on Sundays, I only buy from Homegrown Foods (www. homegrownfoods.com.hk). It’s all sourced by me so I know the farmers making my food.

and ParknShop, wet markets, and also the more high-end grocery stores like Citysuper. The List: What are your favorite family restaurants? NF: My dining room—with so many people in tow plus a 2-year-old, dining out as a family is very little fun these days. I prefer to have friends over, cook up a feast and let everyone run around. But when we do opt for eating out, we’d go for Life Café: my kids love the sweet potato fries. We also love weekend brunches at Zuma: there are always other kids running around and it’s a relaxed way to spend Sunday. PS: I would have to say hands-down Grassroots Pantry. Chef Peggy Chan and her team take so much care in delivering the most delicious foods. Love their burdock fries, South East Asian platter and “chicken” paneer tandoori. My kiddos and hubby and I absolutely love the Happy Cow ice cream served there for dessert. We also really love Life Café—there’s a reason the restaurant’s been around for a while. Also love the flatbread wraps with za’atar and “sun juice” at Mana! Fast Slow Food.

JT: BEP—I love that the spring rolls are packed with fresh veggies. My kids like the fried rice at Crystal Jade, and we also like Sea Salt Fish & Chips, our neighborhood restaurant, where you can get really nice, fresh grilled fish served with red rice or salad. Just Green: Various locations including 52 Graham St., Central, 2801-5611. Oliver’s: Shop 201-205, Prince’s Building, 10 Chater Rd., Central, 2810-7710. Get it Right:

Family Health Putting family health first is the same as putting yourself first, says Dr Lam Wing-wo

F

Fundamentally a happy family is all about learning to live with each other and being considerate.

amily health is such a wide ranging topic that it’s impossible to define as a single entity. In its most basic form, it would probably be best described as the health status of the family as an overall unit, including the impact of any one member of that family on the unit as a whole. When considering family health, it’s important to recognize the effect of family organization and disorganization on health. Family health is more than just a physical issue: It’s also about relationships between different members of the family—between the child and his or her parents, the child with each parent and between the parents themselves. When a doctor treats a person’s health he needs to study the family background and history in order to deal with the root cause of any problem. There are many dynamics that critically affect the health of each individual in the family. Sometimes children’s health problems can be caused by family issues. Many young couples have children, but don’t know how to cope with child rearing. The problem is they have children too young. Before they know how to live with each other in harmony as a family unit, they already have to cope with a young child, and often they don’t know how to communicate with a youngster. We must remember that one member affects the others in a family unit. In a family situation, we 30 HEALTH, BEAUTY & Fitness GUIDE 2015

must know how to express ourselves, learn to listen, communicate, discuss and understand each other in order to avoid conflict. Fundamentally, a happy family is all about learning to live with each other and being considerate. So having empathy is of the utmost importance. You must also learn to use various skills, such as listening, communicating properly, as well as discussing and understanding problems. It's all about "complementarity," learning to appreciate each other’s qualities and co-exist. To begin with we must have the right mindset. One must put family first. Many people fall into the bad habit of bringing home work because it can be done through electronic devices such as mobile phones and emails. Please kick that habit now! Another way of developing the right mindset is you must set aside some time for private communication with your partner. That means you genuinely talk about things that concern each of you and nothing else. Talking to each other openly helps to flush out underlying problems. Be mindful that accumulated, unresolved problems are toxic to the long-term health of a relationship. This kind of toxin also affects the physical health of individual people, and the health of the family as a whole. Dr Lam Wing-wo is a Hong Kong-based family doctor

Harmony

While the modern interpretation of medicine in the Western world is science based and focused on dealing with illness and disease, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), in contrast, strives to achieve health and well-being through the cultivation of harmony. Registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner, Raymond Lam Chi-hang, explains the basis of TCM theory and its benefits.

T

he ancient belief is that harmony brings health, well-being and sustainability, while disharmony leads to illness, disease and ultimately, collapse. TCM is based on the concept of Qi—which translates as vital energy—and the theory of Yin and Yang, the quintessential opposite forces that make up existence. Central to the philosophy is the perfect balance of the two principles between the negative, dark and feminine Yin and the positive, bright and masculine Yang. In a nutshell, TCM considers everything in context and sees everything as a whole. Rather than simply treating illness and preventing disease, it seeks to optimize everything from diet, exercise and handling stress to interaction with family, friends and the environment. TCM is a direct descendent of one of the oldest and continuously practiced systems of medicine in the world. It dates back 2,500 years and has evolved into a sophisticated and rational system of medicine that has influenced many in the wider medical field. Today Chinese medicine continues to develop in new and exciting ways and is utilized by millions of people around the world. It’s universally recognized as a world-class system of medicine. While it is very much centered on Asia, there are about 14,000 practitioners in the United States, and thousands more in other parts of the world. The five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal and water—are aspects of Qi, and good health is a harmonious balance of these elements. That balance is also affected by heat and dampness, two of the six destructive influences in TCM, which have opposite effects on the body. Heat causes increased activity, while dampness creates stagnation. Heat, or fire, is a Yang pernicious influence and when out of balance can lead to irritability, fever and inflammatory conditions. As you might expect, heat rises, appearing as a red face and eyes, sore throat and dizziness. If heat affects the heart or liver, irritability may result. Heat can also attack body fluids, leading to thirst, constipation and dark urine.

In a nutshell, Traditional Chinese Medicine considers everything in context

Syndromes of Heat Wind Heat: Most commonly this appears in the shape of a cold or flu. Wind combines with heat to produce symptoms of fever, sore throat, thirst, headache, sweating, a quickened heartbeat and, on occasion, a red tip of the tongue. Acupuncture and herbal formulas are used to repel the wind and clear the heat. Excess Heat In ORgans: Typical symptoms are irritability, thirst, a dry throat, concentrated urine, constipation, a red tongue and a full, rapid pulse. Other symptoms depend on the organ. For example, lung fire might bring about an accumulation of yellow mucus in the lungs. In all cases, the treatment is to clear the excess heat with herbs and acupuncture.

H e a lt h & W e l l n e s s

Heat Deficiency: When there’s a deficiency in the Yin, the cooling aspect of an organ, the resulting imbalance causes heat to flare up. The symptoms are red cheeks, night sweats, irritability, chronic inflammation, a red tongue and a thin, rapid pulse. Other symptoms depend on the organ affected. When the kidneys have deficient heat, chronic urinary tract infections can occur; deficient heat in the lungs—which can arise from smoking—can lead to a chronic dry cough, while the heat from heart Yin deficiency can cause insomnia.

Syndromes of Dampness

Sang Zhi (Mulberry branches)

Wind Damp: Chills, a headache, afternoon fever, nausea, and diarrhea characterize the common cold. Often sufferers describe feeling as if a wet towel is wrapped around the head. Treatment includes moxibustion—the burning of moxa on or near a person’s skin as a counter irritant—and aromatic herbs that repel wind and drain dampness. Wind Damp Joint Pain: This condition manifests itself in the shape of a dull and heavy pain and numbness that can persist in certain joints. Rheumatic pain that gets worse in damp weather is a good example of this type of imbalance. Treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion can relieve the stiffness and pain. Herbs that clear wind damp, such as sang zhi (mulberry branches) and gui zhi (cinnamon twigs), are

Gui Zhi (Cinnamon twigs)

used to decrease swelling and improve circulation, following the Chinese principle of using branches (tree limbs) to treat branches (body limbs). Internal Dampness: Typically due to an imbalance in the spleen, the symptoms of internal dampness include bloating, diarrhea, lack of appetite, undigested food in the stools, fatigue, and possible edema in the abdominal area. Since excessive dampness in the spleen is stored in the lungs, a damp spleen can often lead to frequent colds and allergies. Treatment uses diuretic herbs and activates the spleen with herbs. When it comes to health tonics, TCM has a number of herbal formulas that are said to treat a range of disorders. Most of these medicines come in easy-to-swallow, tiny round pills or tablets. Remarkably, many of the available remedies have been made by the same family for generations; some have even been in use for more than 2,000 years.

the heart of the problem When treating medical complaints using TCM, it’s important to recognize that there are major differences compared with Western treatments. While you may be used to taking prescription drugs or eating soothing homemade soup as a remedy for many common ailments, a typical TCM treatment plan may well include massage, moxibustion and the ancient Chinese healing art of gi gong, which involves meditation, controlled breathing and movement exercises. The most common treatment plan, however, is more likely to focus on a combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine. Whether you suffer from allergic reactions, insomnia or are merely seeking an effective remedy to the common cold, TCM might be able offer a solution. Having said that, remember that before starting treatment it’s always a good move to seek the advice of a health professional. Here are a just a few suggested treatments for a range of everyday ailments: To treat arthritis TCM looks to reduce pain and inflammation, but also focuses on eliminating the cause of arthritis and, thus, the disease itself. Arthritis responds well to acupuncture. When combined with moxa, it can relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Typically, needles are placed into points surrounding the painful area, encouraging circulation and relieving pain and swelling. Additionally, herbal therapy is used as an important part of the treatment in chronic cases,

helping to expel the cold and dampness. Furthermore, it’s important to exercise regularly in order to warm the body and maintain movement, an essential part of the healing process. TCM is especially effective in the treatment of coughs, because of its differentiation of the various types. A cough due to heat, for example, produces sticky phlegm and is treated with cooling herbs and acupuncture that clears heat from the lungs. A cough due to cold is accompanied by chills and mucus and is treated with warming, drying herbs and the application of moxibustion. If you suffer from diarrhea, traditional Chinese remedies usually include peppermint tea, vegetable broth and plain white rice. Herbal remedies and acupuncture can help reduce fatigue, miso soup with spring onions and fresh ginger is a recognised way to combat the common cold, while strong ginger tea taken with traditional Chinese formulas can help treat indigestion.

All in the Family Life may not be as perfect as it appears on screen, but we could all take a note from TV when it comes to family values.

F

amily comes first. There may be many variations on the theme, but when it comes to the crunch, there’s one bond that ties all families—and blood is thicker than water. And as you would expect, what’s the norm in the real world is also the way family life is portrayed in the field of entertainment. OK, they probably go a bit over the top, but stop for a moment and consider the families at the heart of two of America’s most popular comedy classics, “The Simpsons” and “Modern Family.” “Modern Family,” a hit show where three very different, but related, families face weekly trials and tribulations, is unashamedly billed as one big (straight, gay, multi-cultural, traditional) happy family. It’s a modern classic for the modern day, poking fun at the establishment with its own brand of humor based around an eclectic family. But the message is loud and clear: family first at all times. The same theme is echoed in “The Simpsons”, the evergreen animated sitcom that has aired for 26 seasons and is the longestrunning American primetime series of all time. The satirical depiction of a dysfunctional middle-class American family has captivated audiences for almost three decades, but the program still manages to serve up evocative new material based on family life. That’s all very well in the world of fantasy and entertainment, but what about life in the real world? There’s no definitive mold into which your family should fit, but most people want to meet the needs of their family financially, provide a safe home, develop emotional bonds, and keep their family healthy. Naturally, family life revolves around the parents, so they must first develop a healthy work-life balance in order to be able to spend quality time with the kids.

Back in Action

Women-only fitness community Bikini Fit offers 12-week workout programs in parks all over the city. Trainer Chrissy Denton takes on the tricky topic of working out after giving birth with this 30-minute circuit tailored to new moms.

Instructions: • Perform each exercise for 45 seconds, with 15 seconds rest in between. • Aim for a rest period of 2 minutes between each set. • Repeat the set 4 times.

How To: Begin in a standing position, with your spine long, core engaged and feet slightly wider than shoulder width. Send your hips back and lower yourself into a controlled squat—like you are sitting in an imaginary chair. The ideal depth is hips below the knee. Press your heels into the floor and stand up. You can do this without weights to start.

The Workout:

Plank Why? This is a simple and effective core stabilization exercise targeting the abdominals and lower back that can be done anywhere. This exercise is especially important before getting into more advanced abdominal training. How To: Start face down on your stomach with your elbows and toes on the ground. Engage the abdominal muscles and lift your hips up taking your knees off the ground. Hold your stomach tight, keeping the back flat and hips down, hold still for 45 seconds.

Dumbbell Squats Why? Squats and lunges are great functional, lower body exercises that stress all of the lower limb muscles (including quads, hamstrings and glutes). 44 HEALTH, BEAUTY & Fitness GUIDE 2015

Dumbbell alternating lunges How To: Start in a standing position, take a step forward and drop the back knee to the ground, keeping the back straight and chest up. Hold for 1 second and then push back on the front foot. Both knees should be at 90 degrees on the lunge. Repeat on other side. This can be done without weights as a beginner’s alternative.

Bent-over dumbbell rowS Why? This exercise helps to strengthen your back and spine, helping you with your posture. Additionally, it works your upper back, shoulders and arms. How To: Standing with a dumbbell in each hand and palms facing in to your body, bend your knees slightly and bend at the hips so your chest is over your knees. As you bend, keep your back straight until it is almost

F I TNESS

parallel to the floor like a tabletop. This will be your start position. Lift the dumbbells such that your elbows are close to the body. Lift the dumbbells up to where your hip crease is. As you do that, squeeze your back and hold, before slowly lowering the weight back to your starting position and repeating. Be watchful not to round your back.

DumbBell Piston Press Why? This is a great exercise to strengthen the shoulder area while maintaining good posture and core stability. How To: With feet in shoulder-width position, start with the dumbbells just above shoulders (palms facing inwards). Lift the dumbbell into the air one at a time, locking the elbows out at the top and then back down to shoulder height. Repeat on other side.

Steady as She Goes Denton recommends that new moms be extra careful before starting a new fitness regime. Be sure to follow her guidelines before diving in. • It is important to check with your GP or obstetrician prior to commencing any physical activity as a precaution and to enable a healthy recovery. • Given the nature of a natural versus C-section birth, there are different recommended time frames before starting. • It’s also important to consider post-natal issues such as abdominal separation, which would limit you from performing exercises such as crunches until you have clearance from your medical practitioner.

Get to Work! Not a new mom? No problem. Epic MMA & Fitness trainer Darrel Erxleben says that the fastest way to look better is to work your posterior chain: aka your back, butt and hamstrings. “You have to target your biggest muscle groups with squats, deadlifts and lunges.” Here’s how to spend those precious 30 minutes at the gym. 3. Walking Lunge - 40 reps each leg

1. Deadlift - 10 reps

2. Glute Bridge Raise - 20 reps

4. 400m Sprint

5. rest 2 Minutes 6. repeat 4 times

Activate Your Life There's always a good reason to get active. And for every reason, there are about 50 excuses that keep us from getting up off our butts. By Alice Wu

Maybe your motivation is better health, to fit into that favorite pair of jeans you've kept since college, or just because your friends are all slimming down. Whatever the reason, you first have to make the commitment to get in shape: and then do it. Here's how I made it happen. I was tired of a lot of things. I was tired all day, but most of all, I was tired of feeling tired. And then it happened: I decided that enough was enough. I've let pain—bad back from multiple car accidents, busted up ankle from old cheerleading injuries from high school, years of bad posture from sitting at a desk— completely dictate my life. Since my early 20s, I've woken up to back pain: I had to roll out of bed in excruciating pain because that was the only way to get out of bed. Pain dictated my life and my mood. I had to take control. So I made my decision. Here’s my journey: I was working on a project that required me to live out of a hotel room, so I started going to the gym. The first 10 minutes are the hardest to get through, but if you tough it out, you're halfway there. I vowed to deny myself a morning coffee until I'd done the elliptical for 45 minutes. It might sound silly, but it worked. Over time, the pounds started to come off. But by then, I wasn't just eyeing the scale. I was beginning to understand my body, and for the first time, it spoke louder than pain to me. For the first time in a long time, I craved healthy food. There were immediate health benefits, but little did I know that it would be the beginning of a journey to self-empowerment, awareness and discovery. As I became more attuned to my body, I felt more aware and empowered. That translated

F I TNESS

to dropping more than pounds. Each negative thought, each excuse, became the next challenge to overcome. I felt whole—was in sync. It took me seven months to shave off 50 pounds, and to finally be at a weight where I was physically comfortable enough to start running. I put on my running shoes and just ran. I had to first ignore that fact that I hated running when I was young, but it paid off. Running introduced me to a whole new world. It was invigorating. It awakened me to things I've never paid attention to before. I began to notice all the shades of green along my route—the different flowers in bloom, the sound of waves, the mere rocks. Running gives me clarity, peace, inspiration and a connection to everything around me. I have reached a point where being active is a part of me now—I’m incorporating different workouts, sports and practices into my exercise routine, and they have been my constant source of joy. For my back pain, I do Pilates and various core-strengthening training. There's some weight training in my routine, and I've found so much joy in dance-based workouts, something I loved to do as a child. There's also hiking, Muay Thai and badminton. The options are endless. Well-being is something everyone can achieve: and there are very few things that are as gratifying as knowing that when you're done, you are a better, tougher version of yourself.

Top Tips Reward yourself: For me, silly tricks like “No coffee until I’ve put in 45 minutes” worked as motivators. No shortcuts: You have to exert energy. It’s training for your body, mind and soul. Balance your diet: Good nutrition is just as important as a strong workout. Don’t starve yourself and do your best to eat healthy and have fun with it. Know your numbers: Numbers are points of reference to track progress. Don’t be afraid to keep tabs on how your body is changing—once you see the difference, it can be a huge motivator. Make time: Wake up 29 minutes earlier. Put on your sneakers. Walk out the door. Better yet, do some squats. Right now. It’s time to stop making excuses and make time for yourself.

Fit for Life L

et’s Get Physical” was a mantra for a generation of fitness fanatics back in the 1980s and it still rings true today. Celebrity fitness icons like Madonna and Jennifer Aniston may not be in the first flush of youth, but they still look fantastic. And what’s more, they know better than most how to look after their bodies. When people think of pop sensation Madonna, usually two things come to mind: music and muscles. The famously fit star, recognized as the best-selling female recording artist of all time, makes daily exercise and healthy living a priority. So it’s no coincidence that the Queen of Pop belies her age. Amazingly she is 56. California girl Aniston turned 46 in February, but she’s fitter, leaner and in better condition mentally and physically than at any time in her life. The “Friends” TV star turned movie actress stays healthy, happy and in shape with a regular routine that involves yoga, cardiovascular workouts and a balanced diet of whole lean proteins, whole foods and low starchy fruits. But you don’t need to look to Hollywood to get on the path to fitness perfection. South Korean fitness phenomenon Jung Da-yeon is a popular figure here in Hong Kong and a true inspiration to anyone looking to age gracefully. It’s hard to believe that Jung is 48 and a mother of two. She sports an impressive set of abs and toned firm legs. It’s easy to see why she is often mistaken for someone 20 years younger! Jung, known as “momjjang ajumma” which translates as “mom with a striking figure,” shot to fame more than a decade ago by shedding 20 kilograms in three months after developing a fitness and diet regime that has been imitated by countless thousands of Asian women. While Western women tend to want to be more curvy and muscular, the fitness guru’s routines are more tailored to Asian women, who prefer to be slim and fit without building too much muscle mass. One of the core beliefs of Jung’s innovative fitness philosophy is that it’s never too late to get into shape. With that thought in mind, stop for a moment and ask yourself: is today the day I should change my lifestyle and change my life?

Don’t strain yourself Love exercising but want to avoid potential wear and tear? Physiotherapist Juliet Darnton offers tips about common injuries.

ACL Tear What is it? The anterior cruciate ligament is an important internal stabilizer of the knee joint, preventing hyperextension. It is injured when its biomechanical limits are overstretched, which can occur during contact sports such as basketball, football or rugby. Will I always need surgery? If the knee is unstable, surgery is recommended to prevent joint degeneration. However it can be treated conservatively by strengthening your hamstrings, quads and calf muscles in the gym.

Lateral Ankle Sprain What is it? This is an injury of the ligaments located on the outer side of the ankle joint, which leads to pain and swelling in the area. Any abnormal movement or stress at the joint may cause overstretching or even tearing of the ligaments, referred to as a sprain.

How common is the injury? Ankle sprains account for about 10 to 15 percent of all sports-related injuries. Volleyball, basketball and soccer players are most at risk. How do I treat it? Treatment consists of RICE, which stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. Seeking good treatment to promote healing will help prevent sustaining a further sprain in the future. A simple circling of the foot is a good exercise to start with when walking is painful, but as you heal, practicing balancing on the injured leg will help prevent a further injury.

Shin Splint What is it? While the exact cause is unknown, shin splints can be attributed to the overloading of the lower leg due to the biomechanical pronation of the foot, which results in an increase in stress exerted on the tibia. A sudden increase in intensity or frequency of sport fatigues muscles too quickly to properly absorb shock, forcing the tibia to take the strain, and causing bruising to the membrane over the shin bone.

running uphill, downhill, on uneven terrain or on hard surfaces. Improper footwear, including worn-out shoes, can also contribute to shin splints. Regular stretching, correct footwear and gradually adjusting to a new sport will prevent shin splints. Prevention is always better than a cure! What are the treatments? Treatments for shin splints are not always successful because the exact cause is still unknown. But rest, ice, physiotherapy and getting correct orthotics in your sport shoes will alleviate symptoms.
