Letter from the Editor

Dear readers, The List wishes to use these few minutes of your time to share expressions of solidarity with all our human compadres around the globe – those in the struggle to create good livelihoods for themselves and their families, those in search of peace. Perhaps it is easiest to feel the differences between ourselves in the everyday, though it helps to be reminded that we are ultimately interconnected. Just three years ago we collectively faced an impending ‘wake-up call,’ urging to make drastic behavioural changes as the gloomy, global, prospect of a 2-degree global warming effect felt closer than ever. In 2019 Scandinavia joined (and led) the rise of an international movement of people committed to raising awareness about climate change. Coming from all backgrounds and ages, residing in over 100 countries around the world, together we/ they demanded immediate legislative and societal change for reducing the greenhouse gas effect. This topic dominated our public sphere. And then came Covid-19. The year 2020 can only be described as a surreal science-fiction realm, becoming an exercise to keep our growing human population from contracting a moderately harmful virus, challenging our most vulnerable and threatening to overwhelm our health care systems. It was difficult to imagine the mental health toll from 6 months of ‘staying inside’ and remote-working, let alone two years. Just as many felt a tinge of hope for leaving the Covid-19-bubble and reliving some distant, fond memories like ‘hugging’ and ‘going out’ with friends... enters a new political threat. Less than two months into 2022 Russian President Putin and the fraction of his pro-conflict government declares war against Ukraine. What appears as a transparent attempt to write themselves into history (in the most condemnable way), the consequences of these actions and polarisation are already causing pain and terror, on all sides. We wish to tell our Ukrainian and anti-war Russian expats living in Trondheim: we see your experience, we understand, we support you. For the rest of us; polarisation won’t help, so get out there and start sharing perspectives. In this Spring issue of The List Magazine we cover sentiments from the K-U-K pop-up exhibition charity for Ukraine. Additionally, we have included a smorsgasbord of socially un-distanced activities including music and dance events. Most importantly, we are really looking forward to Trondheim / Trøndelag’s year of food celebration as the European Region of Gastronomy 2022, and the Multiplié Dance Festival -- bringing dancers and non-dancers alike in the city out for a 10-day exploration of movement.

DON'T BE BUGGED OUT BY BUGS BY ELISE GULL ASKIM (OWNER OF NINE TARANTULAS, ONE SCORPION AND A PERSIAN CAT NAMED TORE) As most humans do, I fear what I don’t know. I’ve never been arachnophobic or entomophobic, but that irrational fear of bugs has always been a part of me. The fact that they teleport to the other side of the room, or worse, out of sight completely, can scare the mightiest giant around. It might be in our natural instinct for us to fear them. Most mammals have brains that are programmed to jump back or be startled by critters that scurry by in a hurry, like the way an elephant gets startled by mice or the pupils of babies dilate more when looking at photos of snakes and arachnids than flowers and fish. At the same time, I believe natural instincts can be overruled and challenged. A year ago, I found a way to mentally rewrite my emotional response to bugs. I’m not saying I’d be fine if my apartment got totally infested by creepy crawlies. What I’m saying is that my fascination for bugs replaced the fear. What if by educating and exposing yourself to your fear, you could almost completely cure it? Exposure therapy focuses on changing your response to the object or situation that you fear and is probably the most effective treatment for phobias.

2022 / VOLUME 1

According to science researchers like Paul Rozin, 1984, the emotional response of disgust is almost identical to a fear response. When seeing or touching something disgusting, our emotional response often is “Get this thing away from me!” That reaction is probably the most common if, for example, a spider takes a detour from their regular path onto somebody’s leg. After almost a year of keeping both new world and old world tarantulas, I realised I previously knew nothing about them. With the right care some female tarantulas can live for as long as 30 years or more. Males on the other hand, only have up to about 8 years until they mature and either die during mating or of old age. When an insect gets too big for its exoskeleton, they shed it, which is called molting. I will never forget the first time I saw a tarantula molt. Especially when my Phormictopus auratus, commonly known as the Cuban bronze tarantula, molted into his mature male form. He went from being a calm tarantula into a skittish, really long-legged guy with the smallest butt. Mature males also have a set of hooks on their front legs. The hooks keep the females’ fangs away from them during mating. Males also have bulbs, which are their reproductive organs on their pedipalps.

There are currently over 850 different species of tarantulas in the world. New ones are still being discovered!

4

There are currently over 850 different species of tarantulas in the world. New ones are still being discovered! Information on specific species can be hard to come by, especially if the tarantula isn’t one of the most popular ones to study. It can be frustrating not being able to find any good information available about the tarantula. The good thing is you have the opportunity to get first-hand knowledge to observe, which can be shared with others.

I’m really glad I challenged myself and took the initiative to do something that seemed terrifying at first. I’m really glad I challenged myself and took the initiative to do something that seemed terrifying at first. Now I love feeding the scary ones the most, like my bright blue and yellow Poecilotheria metallica. In my opinion, the hardest part about owning tarantulas is naming them. Out of my eleven bugs, only three of them are named: a Lasiodora parahybana named Midna and two Caribena Versicolor slings, soon-to-be young spiders, called Lilo and Stitch. Here in Norway, the tarantula hobby is relatively small and sellers are few and far between. This forces many people to buy tarantulas either online or in pet stores. Buying them online from the U.K or Poland is a huge risk to take and most times they will not survive the trip. It’s not even legal to ship living animals with Norwegian postal services, therefore it’s impossible to make sure they get the right treatment in-transit.

When buying tarantulas in pet stores, they are often overpriced and sadly not kept in the best environments. I’m no expert, but pet stores seem to keep tarantulas in less optimal spaces. They are often in an enclosure too big with only a sprinkle of dirt. Most tarantulas need plenty of substrate, a specific kind of dirt, so that they can dig and hide. Oftentimes pet stores include a cricket the same size as the tarantula in their enclosures, which can lead to the tarantula feeling threatened instead of enjoying it as a snack. Pet stores also sell old world species without informing customers of the huge difference in venom, speed, and difficulties about raising and handling.

Despite the general fear people have of bugs, I personally hope that the tarantula hobby in Norway grows to a point where more people challenge their fear of bugs, and tarantulas can be bought from people that specialise in them.

5

I once bought a Haplopelma Minax, known as Thailand Black, from a local pet store. They had no idea that a good wet bite from her could make our hand swollen for days and give nerve pain lasting for weeks. Despite the general fear people have of bugs, I personally hope that the tarantula hobby in Norway grows to a point where more people challenge their fear of bugs, and tarantulas can be bought from people that specialise in them. Something so simple as overcoming aversion and developing an interest could help ensure that more information is shared, customers receive good information before purchasing this special species, and that domestic tarantulas will get the right treatment.

What are you up to these days? Currently I’m working on the final touches for Jazzfest in May.

What are you up to these days? I work as a photographer.

What are you up to these days? Sigurd: Mostly inside-stuff, and work of course. Tuva: I’m a student. Other than that, mostly inside-stuff.

Jazz-master

What was the first thing you did when the restrictions were lifted? To rejoice that we got to sell more tickets, and (almost) fill the whole of the Dokkhuset venue with a Sinne Eeg Group concert! Have you discovered any new hobbies or interests during covid? Not really, but I have had plenty of time to practice my 4-Drum Asba-kit. What’s in your hand? It’s a bad fish I’m going to return!

Rising fashion photographer

NTNU Student, and Civil engineer

What was the first thing you did when the restrictions were lifted? I went out for a night on the town! Tyven, Tyven forever. Just kidding. Trondheim has many great places to go out, like Tyven, Lokal, Spontan and Britannia!

What is your study? (Tuva) Work with what? (Sigurd) Pedagogy at NTNU. I’m a civil engineer. What was the first thing you did when the restrictions were lifted? Waited for the next wave! No, hehe. We had covid when the restrictions were lifted, so we did not really do much.

Have you discovered any new hobbies or interests during covid? You know what, I have started with embroidery. I embroidered a pillowcase.

Have you discovered any new hobbies or interests during covid? Tuva: Knitting, crocheting and sewing. Sigurd: I have started painting with aquarelles!

What’s the design? It’s an embroidery of a very detailed ramen bowl. I am very happy with it considering it was my first go at it. Was there anything you ‘liked’ about lockdown, or something important you took away from it? That is a hard question, but no. I hated lockdown. I’m an extrovert. I hate being inside and not meeting people, so no.

2022 / VOLUME 1

Was there anything you ‘liked’ about lockdown, or something important you took away from it? Tuva: Online classes! Sigurd: The increased focus on hand-hygiene. 6

What are you up to these days? Kjell Erik: Right now we are at K-U-K, supporting Ukraine and the people there. We have been here all day. Bjørn Frithjof: Supporting Flyktningshjelpen (refugee-aid) who are helping those afflicted. Kjell Erik: And he has purchased art. What was the first thing you did when the restrictions were lifted? Kjell Erik: The same, I worked. Bjørn Frithjof: I went to a restaurant. Was there anything you ‘liked’ about lockdown, or something important you took away from it? Kjell Erik: Hehe. It was a silent and beautiful city. Bjørn Frithjof: I had time to reflect, and you know, in a hectic everyday life you don’t have much time for that! Kjell Erik: You reflect over what has happened. It can be the start of something. This is something the world has experienced, time and time again, and luckily for us, science has come very far. It is not that long ago you died from the flu, you know. So in some ways we do live in a good time period. Medicinal we have come far, is not that right? Bjørn Frithjof: Yes, I agree.

WHY COME,

TO EXPECT?

Words Jaya Thomlison

For busy people, unfamiliar with the region’s dance communities Take a stroll in Trondheim’s spring weather on Friday, March 25th to this hourlong outdoor performance and wandering, starting at Ravnkloa. It is bound to make an impression! SUPERNOVA’s project Pilegrim is perfect for those unfamiliar with contemporary dance, where attendees will wander through and around trees, trudging over and through brush, both physically and metaphorically. For busy people who want to experience something new During March 30th - 31st the festival offers an exciting double-bill: Sinte gamle samedamer, or “Angry old Sami Ladies”, is a dance performance and hard-hitting artistic fist aimed towards the stigmatisation of Indigenous women, and women of age, in general. This will be held at the Berlin-style blackbox Verkstedhallen, located in Svartlamon.

You can meet new people and experience new impulses. During Multiplié Dance Festival, attendees are encouraged to free themselves from their expectations and bias of what dance is, and just experience it. Dance is a portion of our physical expression, from birth and even before! Movement is something that we tend to restrict more through the ageing process. What could happen if attendees let go and challenge themselves to move more freely with their body? This festival uses a number of environments, from the blackbox, to outdoor strolls, to urban spaces, in effort to help attendees reconnect with their own movement, and perhaps discover a new-found love for the thriving global community of dance.

Then you can take a short stroll over to Rosendal Teater for the performance “Gentle Unicorn”, by Italian artist Chiara Bersani. In this dance performance the 98cm tall 37-year-old artist embodies the essence of a unicorn, where a fragile and eradicated symbol comes into existence. For the solo traveler Try out one of the workshops such as Playhouse, by the Finnish company W A U H A U S on March 29th – 31st. Here you are encouraged to restore contact with your body and dreams. The workshop is a safe and inclusive environment, where you can let go, to another sort of rhythm. Participants will be encouraged to make new connections through touch, whether it is a hug, play-fighting hand gestures, or a slow dance. Alternatively, join SUPERNOVA on their interactive performance ‘Pilegrim,’ and experience a new sort of city wandering.

This rare family-friendly performance beginning at 17:00 explores how war and conflict affect humans and surrounding societies. Places to Read

SPRING & SUMMER

Words Gwen Elliott

Do you sometimes find yourself wandering around town looking for a relaxing place to read a book? Whether enjoying an audiobook while you unwind, browsing through your newfangled ebook-reader, or enjoying an old-fashioned printed volume — here are some of the city’s best places to read, chosen for their atmosphere and chill vibes.

READING FOR ANY SEASON Litteraturhuset located at Kongens gate (entrance on Søndre gate), this awesome concept shares its space with the café Sellanraa. You can purchase a book, enjoy a cup of your favourite beverage with food, or even show up later in the evening for lectures and literary events. The giant windows allow great lighting for your reading pleasure and the direct access to the library means you’re never short on book options. Akrinn at Kalvskinnet is an unexpected reading gem in the city. Part of NTNU’s campus, this building was officially opened in 2017. It has huge windows in almost every direction with an open-floor plan and several reading nooks: bean bag chairs on various levels, small desks tucked away in quieter corners, and large tables for enjoying food while you read.

OLD TOWN BRIDGE

Old Town Bridge (Gamle bybro) this is a classic reading spot! Benches are placed in the middle the bridge in the summer for anyone to enjoy. Walk off the bridge toward the city centre and take a few steps either toward your left or your right and you will find water-side benches to enjoy the view of the river!

MARINEN Marinen this is a great park location in the summer for lone readers or a way to distract the family while you get your summer reading on! Lots of playground and grassy space overlook the river Nidelva.

Byhaven Kafé another lesser-known space for reading is the café atop Byhaven shopping centre. The place is surprisingly quiet for its location. While the food is modest and cafeteria-style, the location can’t be beat: central, with a row of windows overlooking the city. They even have a rooftop patio for when you want to get some fresh air.

Skansen Park DIGS is also the entrance to another interesting reading spot: St. Clement’s Church or Klemenskirken was unearthed in 2016 while DIGS was constructing its 5-story building. This is of huge archaeological significance to Norway as a country, as it was the place where St. Olaf, Norway’s eternal king, was sainted in 1015. It also is his final resting place housing his grave. After you have enjoyed the exhibition and like the lighting, you can plop yourself down on one of the several benches inside to read, while enveloped in the quiet sanctity of the space.

DIGS this café is nestled within floorto-ceiling windows wrapping the perimeter, making for great natural light any time of the year. You can camp out on a comfy sofa, make use of the ‘Nordic design’ chairs for book-supported reading, or stretch your legs at the bar tables to people-watch on Trondheim’s oldest street, Krambugata. The daily warm lunch and locally sourced drinks are made in-house with locally sourced raw ingredients.

Naturally, we end our any-season list with the library. Folks often don’t know, but there are several branches around Trøndelag and you can reserve any title to be delivered to whichever branch is closest to you! There are several reading spots peppered throughout their spaces surrounded by books, and the best part is - it’s totally free!

12

Skansen Park is a green park ideal for grilling and the surrounding area offers a great view of the fjord, while you read. You can find benches and single-occupant seats closer to the water.

Ila Pond Ila pond this pond is just south of the photography school (Norsk fotofgaskolen) and just northwest of Ila kindergarten. One of our writers fondly calls it ‘Ila Duck Pond’ because all sorts of waterfowl enjoy it over the spring and summer months - and you should too! There is a volleyball court nearby and lots of grassy space to throw down a blanket and read to your heart’s desire.

Outdoor plants

Now that we have finally left the darkest months behind us, we can begin preparing our gardens, balconies and indoor plants for warmer and brighter days.

Maybe you have already started sowing seeds for your tomatoes, chilies, peppers, Purple Bell Vine or Cobaea scandens? If you don’t know when your seeds have to be planted you could either read the back of the seed package, or just pop by your local gardening centre for guidance. March is also a good month for trimming fruit trees and some ornamental shrubs. When it comes to trimming your ornamental shrubs, be sure to ask someone with knowledge for tips, as not all of them can endure the extra stress. When maintaining outdoor plants, it is always important to remove as many weeds from your flower beds, plant crates and balcony boxes as you are able to. If you were affected by lots of weeds last season, you should consider changing the soil – weeds always come back! They also have big root systems that steal growthspace and water from other plants. Some weeds are beautiful, I know, but they can do some serious damage if you let them take over.

Outdoor inspiration If you take a stroll around Nidarosdomen in the coming weeks and look around the graveyard, you will see some beautiful blue flowers called scillia.

2022 / VOLUME 1

14

TIPS FOR TRIMMING FRUIT TREES: • Cut off dead branches. • Make room for light, so that all of the branches have direct access. • Remove all branches growing towards the stem. • You should also trim some of the top branches.

As the sun slowly warms up the ground, crocus, snowbells, Easter lilies and muscari will start to bloom little by little as they are ready.

Inside plants

During the first weeks of Spring it’s important to give indoor plants more water than you did during the darker months. TROND WIGER GETS PERSONAL

Words Elise Gull Askim

Trond Wiger, ‘Svartlamoen native’ and old-school Trondheim rapper is publishing his first solo album, 29 years after he made his first rap song After School in 1993. The List staffer Elise Gull Askim connects with Wiger on the brink of his new release, nearly three decades in the making of this Trondheim OG artist: “I never enjoyed writing in school. That all changed when I was 14-years-old. I went home to a friend’s loft on Østersunds street after school. We used a bright yellow

gaining recognition with as part of the hip hop duo, ‘Gøde Ord Dør Sist’, or G.O.D.S. Something rudimentary inside drove him to become an educator regardless, in a different sort of way. Due to their passion for education and the youth potential, Wiger’s group G.O.D.S, toured all over the country, visiting schools and hosting concerts and writing workshops, all in the name of inspiring youth. “I remember getting thank you letters from all over the country after touring schools. When you’re young, an encounter like that can mean a lot. Wiger’s 2008 song “Kua” explores struggles still very relevant, both for society and Wiger today. Should you be looking for an introduction to his music and G.O.D.S., you might take a listen, if you have to just one G.O.D.S song to choose.

A PERSONAL RECORD Wiger explains that his new album, “Att og fram e Aubergine” is his most personal work so far. His message with this E.P is to accept life as it is and to be brave enough to face the storm. The stylistic sound of this album is built on classical beats, acoustic, synths, guitar and base. Almost every single beat in the album was made by Wiger himself. Att og fram e Aubergine is available for purchase at Crispin Glover Records. In a move to keep producing genuine music and share it, Wiger reflects: “I’ve never been great at putting myself out there, doing press interviews or promoting myself. I’m currently on a journey to challenge that”. It could be that Trønder-rappers are just too humble to push for nationwide fame and opt to shrug off celebrity status, or maybe the general populous just doesn’t understand the Trøndersk appeal to its fullest. Nevertheless, Wiger continually represents and was one of the first artists to offer digital concerts in the very beginning of the covid-19 lockdown. “When the pandemic arrived, most artists suddenly couldn’t host concerts, so many people got their music-fix through streaming. However, it takes millions of plays until you can profit anything significant from streaming services.

It was in 1996 that Trondheim’s Hip Hop and rap scene really started to thrive. Alongside, Trond Wiger and Erik Bruset (Børek) started Gode Ord Dør Sist. Fremmed Rase with “Ordfører’n”, or “The Mayor”, Frode Myren, “MC Apekatt” or “MC Monkey” Jan Tore Lund or “Capable”, Christian Teigen, they first started making music under the name Alien Breed and Bromstad Billionares/ Shitrich. Wiger explains that a slew of artists of the same age began making music and performing at the same time, creating a flash flood of Trøndersk Hip Hop and rap. “At that time there were a lot of parties, music videos and fun. But I think we actually have been too nice and innocent most of the time. We probably could have gotten away with way more “spræll”, he explains. Adding that he’s never even been late to a concert. The first wave of Trønder-rap Wiger has always been a fan of challenging the hip hop genre. In 2012 G.O.D.S

published the album Svart Jord which received raving reviews. One song on the album is different from the rest. Fly prinsesse, or “Fly Princess” is more like a ballad. In recent years, rappers making a slow song or two is has become more and more trendy. G.O.D.S were ahead of their time. “When we played the song, everybody became completely silent and had a loss for words. That’s why we decided it had to be a part of the album.” To challenge genres and musical codes is something Wiger always has done. “I feel like the young rappers today are rapping about the same things we did 20 years ago. I have a huge respect for Bulmboys and the other youngins starting out today. I relate to where they are now, and I think it’s great that they want to stay here in Trondheim producing rap in dialect, bringing Trønder rap to the next generation. They are the next wave of trønder-rap.” “Att og Fram e Aubergine” Wigers first solo album, will be released on the first of March.

TROND WIGER. Att og fram e aubergine.

It took some time to realise how much the pandemic affected me. What I miss most is to perform.” Wiger thankfully experienced a small boost performing a few times when society opened up. Artists have few economic means, other than concert sales and album purchases. “When you buy vinyl or a CD, it supports the artist directly”, he adds. Wiger is old-school like that, he prefers pen and paper, vinyl, cassettes and CDs. Artists have dismissed streaming services over the past decade, many frequently choosing to pull their music from catalogues and contracts with service providers like Spotify. As of 2019, Spotify reported that it pays between $0.00331 and $0.00437 per stream, and this amount still needs to be split among many different people. Visible artists are looking to disrupt the current music branch and even larger industry players release new products each year promising change, such as Kanye West’s ‘Stem’ player attempting to challenge existing streaming services. The implications of an artist-owned platform with its own hardware could have the potential to disrupt the current label-serving infrastructure in the global music industry.

Trondheim wins!

Why Trondheim - Trøndelag was honoured as prize winner for ERG 2022 The European Region of Gastronomy is an award provided by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT), supported by international and European institutions. Since 2013 IGCAT has granted the European Region of Gastronomy Award for candidate’s gastronomic excellence to a region deemed worthy by the jury. The purpose of this award is to elevate the recognition of the region and their food offerings.

of Gastronomy 2022

You might not believe this, but the food you’re eating from Trondheim and Trøndelag took 100 million years to grow! Words The List Magazine Photos Jarle Hvidsten

This award is a celebration of local produce, restaurants and agriculture, and awarded to one or more regions in Europe. IGCAT works to support the awarded region with the aim of: • Raising awareness about the importance of cultural and food uniqueness • Stimulating creativity and gastronomic innovation • Educating for better nutrition • Improving sustainable tourism standards • Highlighting distinctive food culture • Strengthening community well-being

The Award is not just about great gastronomy, it is about solving challenges that a region may have in areas of sustainability, economy and social welfare

So, what’s so special about our region?

Mid-norway’s growing conditions are prime for food production

in the northern hemisphere, providing extended sunlight during the summer growing months. This new mainland offered extremely fertile and good soil (marine clay), perfect for agriculture and farming. The Gulf Stream also helped to ensure a perfect climate in Trondheim’s deep Fjord, with 200 different types of fish.

Centuries ago tectonic plates collided, leading to the high mountains and deep fjords we now know and love, the country of Norway. Positioned in the middle of this country, Trøndelag once lay covered by nutrient waters in a seabed. With the shifting plates the land moved and raised, perfectly situating the country 2022 / VOLUME 1

The jury was impressed with Trondheim-Trøndelag for their ethos and high quality food production in the Trondheim Trøndelag region. Additionally, the pride and passion of everyone they met showed, and their appreciation of the land and waters including the green and blue economy. According to Dr. Diane Dodd, President of IGCAT: “The Jury was impressed with the gastronomic strengths of the region and the dedication to sustainability; the commitment to the Food Manifesto and the Food Festival which is already connecting the urban and rural products, enterprises and consumers building a sustainable economy; the interest and involvement of a wide range of stakeholders willing to take part; the integration of IGCAT's focus areas in the bid; evidence of a long-term strategy and lasting legacy for the region.”

The soil in Trondheim -Trøndelag is constituted of geological debris that makes it nutritionally rich for agriculture. From the receding glaciers of the last ice age, marine sediments were deposited into this soil. If that wasn’t enough, another glacial blessing enveloped the areas, protecting the soils from the infiltration of toxic elements. The Norwegian Geological Survey has found that in comparison to other arable lands of Europe, Norway has lower concentrations of toxic elements like arsenic, cadmium, and lead.

K-U-K Supports Ukraine POP-UP CHARITY EXHIBITION

Words David O Skarbø Photos Jeleena Rai

“We took the bus for an hour to attend this important event. It’s a good cause, so we will gladly invest in some young - up and coming art!”,

We went to K-U-K’s pop-up exhibition, created in support of Ukraine and Flyktninghjelpen. (refugee-aid). It was great to see that people were contributing to the cause. One of the driving forces behind this project is Cathrine Hovdahl Vik, the artistic director at K-U-K. She was busy dancing, but we still managed to squeeze in a quick interview on the dance floor.

QUICK CHAT WITH KJELL ERIK: What is the most important thing about this pop-up exhibition? To be seen, and spread an important message. We want to collect funds for something we believe in. This exhibition is an impulsive venture. Not everything is going smoothly, but the most important thing is that we showcase our values, compassion (medmenneskelighet) and togetherness.

Firstly, we would like to compliment your great initiative! Can you tell us a bit about the exhibition and project in general? This is a non-curated pop-up exhibition created because of the invasions in Ukraine. We are currently in a situation that feels hopeless, and especially for those who remember the nuclear-war scares from the 80s. It all started with an email to Åge (Alexandersen). We wanted to do something to help. Åge agreed and then the ball started rolling. Then we got in touch with both established artists, up and coming artists and art-students, to see if they wanted to

submit works for this exhibition. We rigged everything yesterday evening and last night, in addition to contacting musicians and others who wanted to hold speeches. The income goes to Flyktninghjelpen (refugee-aid) and the exhibition is on until Wednesday. Since K-U-K is a private and independent institution, we have the possibility to hurry and act quickly. That is important because you never know what will happen. “Just go for it! You may make a blunder, but at least you can know you have tried!” - Cathrine Hovdahl Vik

I could compare Dag Olav to the overflowing sack of Lego’s under his desk: an abundance of colourful pieces that are useless until you know what to build. Everyone has to start somewhere, to get anywhere - and about that process, Dag Olav has some interesting words to share.

As we were wandering through the artsy school halls, I couldn’t help but investigate a little. By simply peeking into random studios, I could sense the personalities of those who reside there. Dag Olav’s studio was perfectly chaotic - almost too pretty to clean up. Most people can’t concentrate in chaotic workspaces, but he definitely prefers it that way. Like Sigmund Freud once said; “Don’t clean up the mess, I

How was your relationship with art growing up? When I was a kid I loved to draw. Then it suddenly turned serious, and the focus shifted towards technique. The only way people judged art was by how good you could draw a lifelike horse on a scale from 1-10. Your artistic skill was very much decided on technique and not creativity. I did not feel like there was any room for freedom for expression. It was impossible to become an artist, or do art at all unless I learned and mastered all these hard techniques. I am from a

real oil-city (Haugesund), and the people around me had more bad things to say about art, than they had positive. One had to be born a genius to even be allowed to hold a paintbrush. Still, I wanted to work doing something creative, but it was tough. I started doing breakdancing instead. When I quit breakdancing everything felt so hopeless, and I wandered the darkness for around 10 years.

After all this time, what made you try again for art school?

a vast difference of backgrounds and occupations. In the same building there were dentists, pediatricians, bodybuilders and KiT students. Since I stood there everyday and watched all the different people, in different professions, I often caught myself wondering about what direction in life I should choose - still, the only path that tempted me was art. I wished to enroll at KiT,

Well, I ended up having a part time job at the cafeteria in the KiT (Kunstakademiet i Trondheim) building, so basically where we are sitting right now! It was great fun working there, because there is such a wide spectrum of people, with

How do you attack your art, and with what emotions?

but after such a long time, I lacked motivation. Though on a regular basis, I would have conversations with KiT students. In one of those conversations, a student asked me if I did anything creative. I answered that I was doing some analogue collage, among other smaller projects. “You wouldn’t want to enroll at KiT?” they ask me. “Well yes, that would be very nice”,

I say - even though I had no intention of going through with the application. One day at work in the cafeteria one of my colleagues told one of the KiT professors that I wanted to enroll at KiT, and then there was no turning back, hehe. Awkwardly enough it was that situation that made me apply. I honestly just applied for the hell of it, and by some miracle I actually got accepted.

I started doing paper-collages and music, then I delved more into photography and installations. I noticed making installations came very naturally to me. It’s all about taking items and things around you and putting them in a new environment, setting or context. Somehow my skills from setting tables at the cafeteria where I worked had given me an advantage putting together installations. It gave me room to play, like I love to do with and through my art. To have a playful approach to things is very important. In a lot of my artwork, you can (hopefully) see I am having lots of fun. My biggest inspiration is from before when I worked in a kindergarten. I noticed that sometimes the kids would make symmetrical formations in the sandbox.

My biggest inspiration is from before when I worked in a kindergarten. I noticed that sometimes the kids would make symmetrical formations in the sandbox.

It was very fun to watch these kids build a masterpiece, then run away from it to do some mischief. It taught me that it is indeed possible to be ‘done’ with an artwork, and move on to the next thing. Materials i use are very important. It can be everything from making installations from things I find, or making music from sounds others have created. Sometimes I cut in books others have written. It’s all about using something that has already ‘lived it’s life’, and you could say is no longer wanted - and then giving it a new purpose. I think many people don’t think about things they throw away after they have chucked it. I want to give those things new life and meaning that is what I try to accomplish through my art.

Dag Olav working with The List Magazine Trondheim

It all turned out very strange, because even though I enrolled at KiT, which changed my whole life, I was still in the same building. I still meet the same pediatricians and architects. Even after I started classes, I felt like there was an invisible cafeteria-desk in front of me. Now I am sitting here at my studio, enjoying a great view of Solsiden as well as art.

What I have done is to make collages of previous issues of The List Magazine. The newest issue is always relevant at the moment, but as soon as the next issue arrives the previous becomes more or less irrelevant. It does not matter how the collages end up looking. The art piece in itself is getting those collages made from the pages of old magazines, printed in the new magazines, and in that way giving them new life and making them current again.

ALEXANDER NERLEIR SØTORP

One hot summers day, a butterfly flew in through my bedroom window. At the time, I was coincidentally reading about this fictional butterfly collector named Mino, who lived deep in a South American rainforest.

Words by Jéleena Rai Artwork by Alexander Nerleir Søtorp

Thanks to Mino’s teachings, I learned the basics of how to put a butterfly gently “to sleep”. My interest sparked, and suddenly my mind was filled with thoughts about different species, and where I could find them. I was inspired! Some time later I started to photograph the butterflies, and I realized that the photographs were a way of preserving as well. So I started collecting - not only the butterflies, but pictures of them too! This is how my project “Specimen” began. Initially the plan was to make it into a book, but I found my collection rather lacking. Sadly, I couldn’t move to the rainforest like Mino, and summer was already over here in Trondheim. That was when I reached out to a butterfly collectors group and found Peik Wieland. He had collected butterflies his whole life, and I was delightfully surprised! Thanks to Peik, I had something to use for this project. Some of the pictures are not a good representation of how the butterfly actually looks. I used a scanner to scan some of the butterflies, and this let me abstract them, it let me break up the perfect geometric look they have evolved over thousands of years. This was exciting to me, and I liked how the abstractness looked alongside the pictures that represented them in their natural form. For now I will continue working with “Specimen” in the future. I’m also having an exhibition in May at Verkstedhallen in Trondheim, please come! 2022 / VOLUME 1

Trash life: EATING FOR FREE IN TRONDHEIM How to eat like a (drag) queen for free

Two years ago Sandy Lundhaug got tired of eating porridge every day. When the pandemic arrived, she wanted a change. Sandy was then invited to a dumpster diving and food sharing group on Facebook after sharing her financial struggles with a friend. Now Sandy eats like a queen. Maybe not like the queen of England, but a well-paid and well-fed drag queen, all thanks to dumpster diving. Sandy Lundhaug is a Norwegian artist, activist and visionary. She views herself as an anarchist and dreams of stopping climate change, overthrowing global capitalism, and dismantling the current form of nation-state. She is active in various organizations like Extinction Rebellion, Skeivt opprør (‘Queer uprising’), Reduce the Rent, and ATTAC Norge. “I grew up in an orphanage and later in foster care. My parents weren’t dead or anything, child protective services just thought they were lacking, and I partly agree with that. I then went to culinary school because I was tired of the regular education route, and I wanted to do something action-filled and thrilling. But then I dropped out of the trainee program after school, because 12-hour shifts, 6 days a week, for lousy pay didn’t cut it. That (non-existent) work-life balance wasn’t for me.”

2022 / VOLUME 1

Photo Amalie Holm

Photo Elise Gull

Finding community and herself Sandy’s felt different her whole life, in-search of her place in the world: “I never felt masculine and just believed something was wrong with me. I therefore felt the pressure to push myself to do masculine things, like taking on a hard labour job or joining the military, to become accepted. I joined the Navy not having a clue what to do with my life.” If Sandy knew she was transgender before the Navy, she probably wouldn’t have joined. Since the Navy she drifted around trying to find herself and community. Then after a while she finally did, at Fretex. She started working there in 2017. “At first I got the job through NAV. Then after a while I was offered actual employment, but only part time. After starting to experiment with feminine clothing and different styles at Fretex I finally began my transition in 2019.”

32

Of all the items one can scavenger hunt, Sandy’s favourite dumpster item find is brewed goods, explaining that it’s a very rare find. Her second favourite finds are hygienic products. Eating like a queen for free means that while living on a small income, “I can’t afford many good, healthy food items,” with less than 7,000 NOK in salary, she operates with small margins to make ends meet. “I used to buy the cheapest brands, eat a lot of oatmeal, and spent a lot of time looking through papers for sales and discounts”. After going vegan for a while, both for ecological and economic reasons, she the discovered dumpster diving:

It turned that out I lived close to two of Trondheim’s best dumpsters. Now I eat meat or fish pretty much every day, and lots of fresh veggies and fruits, all for free Before Christmas she found over 4 kilograms of perfectly fine ‘ribbe’, and had a great party with lots of friends. “We all brought some (mostly dumpstered) food. Just last week, I found 3.2 kilograms of entrecote beef.” Most of the food she eats is entirely edible and fresh food rescued from dumpsters, or ‘free fridges’ like the ones in Ila and Svartlamoen, or Matsentralen. The only things she buys are dry goods like rice and lentils, and non-food items like soap and hygienic products. While it is possible to find those as well, it is not as common as fresh meat and veggies.

After two years of dumpster diving out of need and tiring of plain old porridge, she has now has an improved lifestyle. The first time Sandy went dumpster diving she ventured out late and night and was scared of being discovered, or stopped. Later on she started dumpstering in daytime, relinquishing all care,

There’s not much to fear, and it’s perfectly legal, as long as you don’t break into locked dumpsters. We need to rebuild society. Other than sustaining most of her food from the dumpster, Sandy leads a sustainable life by acquiring most of things secondhand, or purchasing vintage. She bikes wherever s`he needs to go in both summer and winter. “I try to buy as few new things as possible and when I do buy new stuff, I buy from small local businesses rather than giant corporations.” Sandy has strong thoughts about climate change and what needs to be done to stop it, or slow it down, referencing that more people should work with circular economy. “The root of the current climate crisis is a result of capitalism, plain and simple”, stating that this system is based on unlimited growth in a world with finite resources. “We have already strained mother earth too much, to the point that she is suffering severe and irreversible damage.” Instead, Sandy cautions to rebuild "this inherently damaging system, and build new societies from the ground up. Societies where the focus would be to take care of each other and our environment."

that embarking on this creative process is easier said than done. Diego Ongaro’s Down With the King is an honest portrayal of doubt, expressed in a subtle and powerful way by Gibbs. It is worth noting that the film has been given the same title as Run-D.M.C’s 1993 comeback album, one which has often been referred to as a response to the changing rap scene in the 90’s.

Renowned rapper and actor Freddie Gibbs gives a solid performance as Mercury Maxwell, a famous rapper who is tired of life in the spotlight. Mercury eschews the city in favour of a remote life in the village in order to write new music and work on his next album. He is becoming increasingly frustrated with the music industry and trying to break free from a life he no longer wants. ROCKHEIM: EVERYBODY DANCE

Throughout history, people have gathered to dance. What we call ‘folk music’ and ‘folk dance’ today was once popular culture. Today, social media has made it possible to share your dance interest with the whole world. Everybody Dance! provides an exciting insight into Nordic traditions, and is based on material collected from the Nordic countries. The aim of the exhibition is to make dance traditions visible as part of our common cultural heritage and help to pass it on 2022 / VOLUME 1

to a new audience. Through the exhibition, curator Tone Erlien Myrvold wants to show the social aspect of dance, how the power of dance unites people, that dance exists regardless of time and place, and most importantly: that everyone can dance! Everybody Dance! is a tribute to dance and dancing together and is composed of several interactive stations with, among other things, VR glasses that take you to an alternative dance universe.

Through a combination of interactive installations and dance floors, visitors are invited to explore different ways of dancing together and to actively take part in the dance and to feel the rhythms in the body. The exhibition is produced by the Norwegian Center for Folk Music and Folk Dance in collaboration with the Performing Arts Museum in Stockholm and the Theatre Museum in Helsinki based on the idea of curator Tone Erlien Myrvold.

Norwegian children are said to be born with skiis on their feet, so no wonder Kids Ski Day happens every year. First held in 1993, it has become a winter tradition for thousands of children and their families. Around two and a half thousand children take part, with an estimated 10,000 spectators cheering them on as they race around the 1997 World Cup arena in Granåsen. With five tracks ranging from 200m to 10km, it is suitable for children of most ages and abilities. The full program has not been released at the time of writing, but it promises to be a fun-filled event with entertainment and activities happening throughout the day. ULV! ULV! AN EXHIBITION AT NTNU UNIVERSITY MUSEUM The Scandinavian Wolf: Menace or Misunderstood? Wolf, wolf! How loud is your howl? And who will decide if you endure? NTNU University Museum invites you to learn and share your voice at the highly anticipated ‘Ulv! Ulv!’ - an exhibition on the NorwegianSwedish wolf. How many sayings or phrases can you think of that include or allude to the word ‘wolf’? The boy who cried wolf, a lone wolf, part of the pack, the big bad wolf, The Wolf of Wall Street, to name only a few!

How does this portrayal in popular culture affect our perception of this elusive creature? If you have been paying attention to news in Norway for the last few years, you know about the hot-button Norwegian-Swedish wolf debate. Some view wolves as a threat to their livelihood, others see them as victims of a political game. But really, how much information is available that isn’t filtered through personal bias?

We finally have the opportunity to engage with this information from a science-based, neutral approach at NTNU University Museum. In 2016, the Norwegian parliament asked for an independent study to be conducted on the genetic and geographic origins of the NorwegianSwedish wolf, as well as the relationship between wolves and dogs. The study was conducted between NTNU University Museum and the University of Copenhagen. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a biologist to understand or enjoy the exhibit! It promises

to be interesting for families as well as the socially engaged citizen. Have you ever wondered about the genetic similarity between wolves and dogs? Have you considered what popular information could actually be false? How did the Vikings perceive of and engage with wolves? What are the statistics around the impact of wolves? How did the wolf become humankind’s best friend? Ulv! Ulv! invites you to engage with the information presented, to learn new facts. Join us at NTNU University Museum to be a part of understanding this species of wild animal. Be part of the discussion surrounding their fate and share your opinion!

Töddla: Is it punk, is it prog, noise or pop? Whatever it is, this is something for those who enjoy rock full of energy! You might find something in common with Queens of the Stone Age and Gåte in between the fuzz guitars, loud drums and shimmer bass. Law of All: Yack Magazine describes their new song “Pushit!” like this: «Its erotic, its excotic, its sexy as fuck. Put it in your ears.» The Oslo based trio plays dirty, heavy punk rock with references to among others Royal Blood and TurboWolf. Conor Patrick is an Irish-Norwegian artist from Trondheim, in addition to being a songwriter and producer with radio success both in Norway and abroad. Over the past year, he has locked himself in the studio to write music, and has several exciting collaborations underway with Norwegian and international artists.

Back in Trondheim for the first time in almost seven years! In a genre where it is difficult to stand out, Leprous has taken a clear position, and is today considered one of the most relevant bands in the world in prog rock and metal.

Dag Solstad turned 80 in 2021. In the same year, he added another star to his diverse text universe, with the collection of articles «Articles on literature 2015-2021». The book is in many ways a literary autobiography. Solstad writes about language, about literature in general and about his relationship with authors such as Knut Hamsun, Fernando Pessoa, Thomas Mann, Olav Duun and Selma Lagerlöf - to name a few.
