A Letter for the Future Dear Reader, Wow, we made it. Four years later, our high school journey is over. It feels as if each of us were walking through the main foyer for the first time just yesterday. Through the good times and the bad, the happy and sad, sweet and rough, this adventure has shaped each of us into who we are today. We’ve been through plenty of triumphs and mistakes. We hope the future holds great things for all of us and for all of you. To those who aren’t graduating, you’ve got this, you won’t want to cut your high school time short. We were all so eager and ready to leave, but as our final days here at The School That Leads dwindle away, we are feeling a bit anxious and nervous for what’s to come. It’s just the next step in life, whether you’re going to college, taking a gap year, or entering the workforce after high school, this is just the beginning of the life that’s to come. Enjoy the time you have as a minor. Adulting is great, but responsibilites aren’t always fun. Don’t wish to grow up too fast, take it from six seniors who all wish we were still 15 or 16 without a care in the world. Congratulations to all the seniors graduating and good luck to the juniors. We know you’ll go out and do great, fantastic, and wonderful things! Love, Shayna Jaskolka, Victor Kalil, Theo Prineas, Mina Takahashi, Edie Knoop, and Addy Smith may 22, 2018 3

Survive With Logic M

usic is easily the number one thing that got me through high school. When you find the right music, it can change your mood or cause the ascension from a good day to be a City High Little Hawk to a GREAT day to be a City High Little Hawk. It took me probably around a year into high school to really find the music I could really jam out to. It was a unique and funky electronic sound. I had never heard anything close to on the radio or on my parents’ CDs. Somehow it was entrancing and beautifully put together to make my ears and causes me to get those goosebumps every time. Eventually I discovered rap in the later side of 2016–

more for the beat than the lyrics. In 2017 I began exploring the bars of these songs. It was like poetry with a beat. Overnight I got hooked on Logic and later some other artists that had powerful messages, whether it was about equality, the danger of addictions, or our government. So here’s my number one piece of advice. Find music you LOVE–those personal onomatopoeias for happiness and sadness. Find the do re mi that you can connect to your opinions and aspirations. Don’t overplay the music either. That’s tough for me. As time goes on and we see less and less of the people we’ve been seeing for the past 13 years or so :’( , remember your music will always be with you. Let it carry you through those moments when you’re under pressure and help you soar in moments of pride. I don’t think I would’ve gotten through high school without music. It would be tooooo boring. Here we are. The last paragraph I will write in newspaper. Stay humble till the end, do what you love and don’t ever wonder what it could be, fulfill it, and lastly, find your jam. —Victor Kalil

Friendship. Is. Magic . H igh school isn’t that bad...I mean, it can be rough at times, really rough, but it really isn’t the worst. There are worse things in life. Still, high school has its struggles: my freshman year was not hard academically, but it was socially. I had just moved here and didn’t have any friends. Theo Prineas–go check out his column too– was the first friend I had here. I had PE with him and he came up and talked to me while we ran laps. It was really nice to know that people did like me and that I would eventually have so many friends I’d lose count of them. Friends are so important, learn the importance of having those bonds early in life. It will make things a little easier. Having a network of friends is essential to surviving high school. Without people there to support you and to talk with it’s going to be rough. At the end of my junior I lost most of my friends due to a conflict within the group. It was devastating, I felt I had no one who I could go too. My summer was not the best, I spent it mostly with my dog (I love my dog, don’t get me started on talking about her-it won’t end. I could talk about her for days.) which isn’t bad, but seeing people and spending time with people is also fun. As awful as that summer was, I actually found my true friends. The people who stuck with me or found me were and are the real people who got me through high school. Yes, I know friends will change, come and go, but you always need a good group of friends at each stage of your life. A friend I never thought would actually be a friend, a truly great and magnificent friend, one of the greats, was YouTube. YouTube has everything. It’s how I survived chemistry, AP world history, AP government, and basically every other class. (Thanks John and Hank Green!) YouTube is a wonderful resource-use it. It was also an escape, a way to find new people from around the world, and I could have all of YouTube on my phone. YouTube was my way to take a break from homework or just life because we all know it can get crazy sometimes. Taking a break from reality is okay! I know it can be stressful to stop doing that project that’s due tomorrow, but that fifteen-minute break watching a couple Buzzfeed videos can

help and even make you more productive. You could even listen to a video while working on something. I always work better with a little noise, quiet is boring and brains need stimulation. So just remember, life gets crazy, have friends, talk with them, have YouTube, it’s a homework helper and a friend. You will get through high school just fine, don’t worry, I did it. Here are some words of possible inspiration, take them as you please. Everything in moderation, remember that one bad grade WON’T kill you. I got my first C last year and I still had a 3.7 GPA. Colleges will want you even if you have a bad grade here and there. You got this, I believe in you! Also enjoy high school, you won’t get these final years of your childhood back. Have fun, my dudes! —Shayna Jaskolka

Law, Order, and Me M y gavel holds a position of honor on my desk, crammed in a cup with the assortment of pencils and pens that have been accumulating since my elementary years. In contrast to their bright plastic and colorful—often childish—wrappings, the gavel is smooth chestnut, with the head wrapped in gold metal and stamped “City High Mock Trial.” The clutter takes up most of the space on my desk. When I leave for college, I will have to clear out the dusty notebooks, dried pens, and shaped erasers, most of which will go in the trash. The gavel, however, will come with me, to take a new position on a new desk in a new jar with new pens and pencils to gather around it. I received the gavel a month ago, at the annual Mock Trial party at theA house of our coaches, Lisa and Schumann. It was the last of the parties for me and for all of the seniors. The gavel was a gift from the coaches to us, a way to remember Mock Trial and what it meant for us. When I first joined Mock Trial, the club was in its infancy. Small and comprised mainly of seniors, the team had never qualified for state. I joined with a group of other sophomores and one freshman. Together, we formed a second team, which was a first for City Mock Trial. Our attorney team was all-female and all-sophomore. Under the guidance of our unparalleled coaches, we bloomed into one of the top teams in the state. Through trial and error, we learned not only how Mock Trial worked, but how to work together. Although we were disappointed our first year, we fought through it. The following year, we not only qualified for state, but ended up placing seventh. In the process, these girls became some of my best friends. Perhaps a litte bit like the club itself, I was a little underdeveloped when I first joined mock trial. I had friends, but not many. I participated in some clubs, but mainly just swam. I liked being on my own and never pushed myself to do anything differently. It took Mock Tri-

al for me to see that other people were a strength and that new activities were an opportunity. I discovered not only a wonderful group of people, but a passion that will hopefully take me to law school. Since joining Mock Trial, I have become more social, more well-rounded, and, I believe, a better person. Some of the best experiences of my high school career happened in a courtroom or in a hotel prepping for a trial the next day. There has been triumph and disappointment, laughter and frustration, but I have cherished every moment. I wouldn’t be the person who I am without Mock Trial. However, this isn’t a call to join Mock Trial. (In fact, seeing as the club has swelled to four teams, I might have an obligation to discourage you from coming out.) My point is that being involved and being open to change will make or break your high school experience. If you keep yourself closed up, you’re going to miss the best part of high school, which is the opportunity to grow up. This is the time of your life. Don’t throw it away. MTB forever. —Eden Knoop

Theo Dreams of Coffee A s I write this, at one in the morning, I am drinking coffee. Why am I making this fantastic decision, you may ask? Because I procrastinated writing this until the last possible minute. This isn’t some uncommon image; every month, every deadline, every due date, I’m up late at night, imbibing my beloved life-bestowing bean juice. Okay, yeah, I know I have a problem. I mean, you’ve got to make the grade somehow, am I right? Plus, if I didn’t drink coffee, I would have to take an ADHD medication which would cut my sleep hours and make me feel like a zombie 50% of the time, anyhow. Let the debate about whether or not coffee and caffeine is healthy rage on (it is. I’m right.) I reckon I’ll stick with my coffee, thanks. It should be noted that I am by no means condoning substance abuse. Addiction is a serious problem and should be addressed as such. Be responsible, folks. Ultimately, my caffeine quest in high school was to reach a state of hygge as frequently as I can; coffee or tea, a book, a blanket, a cat, and a warm fire while a blizzard’s a-blowing outside. Basically, what I’m saying is that

I want to live in Alaska with a personal library and some cats and a French press. Now, coffee can be a petulant peer; add too much cream and sugar, and it will become weak, just like those who drink it as such. I drink my coffee black because, contrary to the mild-mannered image I may present to the world, I am extremely hardcore. This dark and bitter aesthetic matches my view of high school. High school is a dangerous place, full of homework, difficult questions, and even more difficult decisions (should I get up to make tea, or should I stay in bed? should I wear flannel, or...flannel? is 42 reallya the answer to life, the universe, and everything? if so, why?), and I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to the faint of heart, at least without coffee. Actually, if you’re faint of heart, coffee might be a bad idea. Sit down. Breathe. I’ve definitely never been in this situation, especially in my preparations for AP tests or the ACT. Although I thus spake in jest (mostly), I can still vouch for coffee’s power. ‘Tis more powerful than the tides, more powerful than whatever gods may be, more powerful even than humanity, for without it school would crush me and many of my classmates to dust. But coffee elevates us above the dust, above the numberless fauna crawling on all fours through the wilds of the Midwest. Coffee is the glue that holds our lives together. So. Cheers! I guess. Whatever it is you people do with your coffee mugs. —Theo Prineas

The World is Your Canvas I ’m the girl who walks around with hundreds of pens, highlighters, pencils, a huge planner, and any other method of organization you could possibly think of. Without any of these things, I definitely would have struggled even more than I did getting through high school. Not only is it an efficient study method, it is also a fun and enjoyable way to take notes. I’ll never forget the countless French projects I created for Mr. Balcaen that he would look at and slide to the back of the pile to show last, or how Mr. Schumann displayed half of my daVinci cards on the wall. Although I’m not the smartest student, being able to express my creativity in rigorous academic classes has definitely helped me survive high school. Becoming feature editor this year impacted my life a lot. Not only did I get to write and tell impactful stories, I also

got to express my creativity through magazine and website design. Finding something you’re passionate about is key to surviving high school. Whether it’s academics, athletics, music, or a club, it’s important to have something or someone to go to whenever you’re feeling stressed. And it’s high school, so that’s pretty often. Having the journalism room or the music wing to go to as an escape during a long day makes all the difference. Having found people and place that I feel comfortable in and serves as an escape has made a big difference throughout high school. Having a creative outlet through feature writing, design, music, and organization has been my niche here at City High, helping me find a place among thousands of students, and has definitely helped me survive high school. —Mina Takahashi

“SENIORITIS”: A...SOLILOQUY? T

18 senior salute

he fierce reflection of piercing sunlight off my watch turns my head to its face: 10:38 a.m. Chilly corridors filled with the haunting echo of a school bell beg for my presence, but no matter how hard my conscious fights to win over my prefrontal cortex, the virus prevails. My soul is slowly leaving its host as I lie on the glamorous shore of the Coralville Lake, under the fierce watch of Ra. I was given the desolate diagnosis of “senioritis” only ten short months ago. Although I have heard of the disease becoming increasingly prevalent amongst humans to whom I have been close in recent years, the prognosis has never been quite clear. What happens to us, the pitifully infected? Death? Inexplicable recovery? A miracle drug materializing out of thin air to remedy the devastating symptoms? I feel myself weakening by the second. As the time fades by, so too does my motivation and sense of direction. An uncertain future awaits me, one full of extreme student debt and wrinkles. Thus, I take another swig of my ‘bucha and gaze out at the canine who evidently just discovered it is, in fact, unable

to swim. My infection has forced me to often ponder abandoning all responsibility, buying a VW van and traversing the contiguous United States in search of grandeur. But, alas, I have learned through much trial and tribulation that life is only prosperous when observed in balance. As a reggae street performer once told me, live with an open-mind in constant search of fun, but not so much as to cloud your focus. So, my young grasshoppers, as I lie on this beach, under attack by this punishing disease, I encourage you to keep these words close to your heart. Only an open mind will allow for positivity and knowledge to enter. My last remaining ounces of strength are withering away with each letter I write, so please, consider these my final words. Goodnight City, Goodnight Chicken Patty, Goodnight couches aflame in the parking lot, Goodnight stoves a trappin’, songs on the cheese, Goodnight truck kids who vroom when ever they please, Goodnight 2109, Goodnight Marshall the Divine, Goodnight a many grueling stair, Goodnight noises everywhere. —Addy “Papa” Smith

In Loving Memory of J.C. Meardon

ABOVE: A Scrabble tribute made by Maxwell Meyer comprised of descriptions of j.c.

“J.C. would want to be remembered as the “Troll of City High”. He always knew how to get under people’s skin, set an upbeat mood, and guarantee a laugh. A true and proud class clown. One of my favorite memories of J.C. was when he pushed his friends out of a canoe in the lake, paddled away as fast as he could, and made them swim half a mile back to the dock. It reminds me of the troll he was and that living life with him wasn’t about travelling the world, or going to adventure parks. Having the pleasure to be around J.C. was centered around living in the now and appreciating the small

moments.” —Jackson Meyer

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
