Flying by Foy
Director’s Notes: Can you recall a time in your life when anything was possible? Perhaps you could fly, run faster than a speeding bullet or become a Power Ranger. In childhood our boundless imagination easily transports us to Oz, Metropolis or Neverland. “On these magic shores…” writes James Barrie, “children at play are forever beaching their oracles (boats). We too have been there; we can still hear the sound of the surf, though we shall land no more.” This world of make believe, effortless for us as children, is pushed to the corners of our consciousness as adults. Neverland is only dimly present as we focus on the realities of daily living and loving. The love story in Peter Pan is based on the conflict between our sometimes colorless but deeply nurturing adult world, where Wendy resides, and Peter’s vivid world of adventure. Neither Peter nor Wendy can stay in the other’s world for long without losing their identity. In the end each must go back to their own world. Fortunately, this production serves as a reminder that there is a place between the worlds of Wendy and Peter, and it is the theater. Both adults and students have let their imaginations take flight in order to create City High’s Neverland. Seemingly responsible young adults have swung on ropes, leaped from ships, flown around the room and killed each other with abandon. Children have solved problems, cleaned up the mess and nurtured their aching parents. Anything is possible in theatre! I want to say thank you to the Young Footliters for their never-ending energy in this project. The children of Iowa City are very lucky to have such a fantastic young people’s theatre to work with. This certainly explains why we are so successful in theatre at City High.
As Peter would say “Let the adventures begin!”
