FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear TLS Community,
Over the past two years, COVID and our democracy have summoned myriad emotions for our community – some happy, some hard. Through it all, gratitude has been consistently on our minds.
As the Harvard Medical Journal explains, “Gratitude helps people feel positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” Thus, it is no wonder that we’ve been able to summon joy over the past two years to help us weather the struggles around us.
Despite our deep feelings of gratitude, we’ve been remiss in getting our 2019-2020/2020-2021 Annual Reports out to the community. Instead of creating a longer publication, this is just the facts. You’ll see the names of the amazing people who have supported the Annual Fund, auction and the Campaign for a Big Future over the past two years. You will see how the school pivoted and worked to responsibly manage its finances while prioritizing the care of its students and faculty. And, just for fun, you’ll hear the voices of some of our Outgrowers from 2020 and 2021 as they shared reflections on TLS’ impact and power in their lives as they prepared for their new schools.
Though a new building, a pandemic and a changing world all affect TLS, we remain, first and foremost, a community centered around joyful celebration and respect for children and childhood. It’s a magical place to learn and play. Thank you for being a part of it.

In 2019-2020, we recognized that The Future is Now. Then, in 2020-2021, our focus was on the Campaign for a Big Future, and we relied on the auction and unsolicited donations to the Annual Fund to support our operating budget. No matter the call, the generosity of The Little School community came through loud and clear, and we could not be more grateful.

Changes at The Little School and throughout the world have had a big impact on our revenue and expenses over the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 fiscal years.

With the refurbishment of our existing buildings and the addition of our Rivers Building, we have been gifted even more beautiful and versatile spaces for our students to play and learn. These additions, as well as facility adjustments to support COVID-safe learning spaces, resulted in increased costs. Investments in air filtration, outdoor classrooms and increased cleaning all helped our community stay well through the pandemic.
Additionally, COVID-19 required we invest in people. We hired extra faculty to support dual programs online and in person and expanded our Associate Teacher program to ensure students worked in meaningful small groups with differentiated instruction. A decrease of field trip, guest speaker and program consumables costs allowed us to prioritize staffing for safety and learning.
The other investment in people reflected our commitment to expand a culture of belonging and access for families. The Board of Trustees raised its commitment to financial aid to 12% of our operating budget. This allowed the school to purposefully expand enrollment and continue to diversify our wonderfully global community.

In 2020, our community was surprised by the need to pivot to our firstever virtual auction. With little time to prepare and very few examples of how to make a virtual auction work, the Auction Team rose to the challenge. In 2021, there was more time to plan into the possibilities of a virtual celebration. In both years, our community came together, exceeding fundraising goals and setting new records for financial aid. This generosity is a prime example of the heart of The Little School community.

A vision for TLS that had been percolating for decades has finally been achieved. Our community raised more than $4.5 million dollars to establish the Rivers Building, modernize our existing facilities and enhance our campus. Now, we have an inviting entry to campus; a welcoming place to begin the day; spaces to gather and connect as a community; dedicated classrooms for music, environmental education and art; an inside area for P.E. and so much more. As we begin to more fully make use of these spaces, now that we’re able, the possibilities of how we can learn and grow together in them seem almost limitless.

Our Put Down Your Roots initiative supported our commitment to keeping our campus lush, natural and vibrant. Raising nearly $109,000 for new trees, bushes and shrubs, families demonstrated their passion for the environment and their own love of nature. Thousands of native plants were added to campus, including more than 1,500 through this effort alone, and the school has leveraged the power of these new plantings to expand conversations about environmental stewardship, indigenous histories, climate and habitat with students and faculty alike.
