Page 1

LET’S PLAY! AUCTION & GALA Saturday, March 28, 2015 Bear Creek Country Club Doors Open at 5pm Priceless!

PLEASE BRING THIS CATALOG WITH YOU TO THE AUCTION 1

WELCOME Welcome to The Little School Auction—Let’s Play! I am not a big user of Wikipedia but this definition of play was too good to pass up:

In psychology and ethology, play is a range of voluntary, intrinsically motivated activities normally associated with recreational pleasure and enjoyment. Play is most commonly associated with children and their juvenilelevel activities, but play can also be a useful adult activity, and occurs among other higher-functioning (non-human) animals as well. This definition captures our hopes for the auction. This night will be a great night—full of fun, friends and paddlewaving hands high in the air in support of The Little School. There is an exciting range of auction items to bid on from fancy dinners and dream vacations, to simple family overnights and play filled experiences for all ages. So recharge your competitive spirits, enjoy the evening and join in this community event that says We Love The Little School! See you at the bidding tables.

2. Nancy’s Class Project These twenty hands will do so much. They will grow and grow. They will do great things and they will remember the formative times when they were together showing their love for each other and for The Little School. One day your child will marvel that their hand was ever so small and they will hold it up to this piece of art created by Nancy’s class and think of their friends and smile.

Priceless

LIVE AUCTION 4. Joyce’s Class Project Ed Emberley’s instructional drawing books inspired Joyce’s class to create a representation of their year at The Little School. The canvas is a rustic walnut wood, which fits with both the character of the project and the ethos of The Little School. With a black and white sketch of their play structure as the backdrop, each child placed their fingerprints, embellished them into characters with inspiration from Emberley’s style and personalized them with their names. To match reality to their illustration, another picture was taken of the play structure with the children standing in the exact spot of their characters.

7. Heidi’s Class Project As every student in Heidi’s class knows, Zentangles are miniature pieces of unplanned, abstract art that are a form of artistic meditation. 9. Michele’s Class Project Integrating both physical and intellectual diversity is one of the great gifts and lessons learned by students at The Little School. For their auction project, Michele’s class wanted to represent the people of the world. Each painted several people to represent the different cultures and heritages around the world, while showing they are all fundamentally the same (all started as pegs). These people were arranged around a wonderful felted representation of our planet. This piece is an inspiring representation of how our children see the world every day—connected and cooperative.

11. Cindy W’s Class Project The Little School is in many ways the chrysalis from which our children will emerge and stretch their wings as butterflies. Taking that metaphor to heart, the children of Cindy W’s class created a kaleidoscope of colored tissues and cut the shape of a butterfly from it, leaving two segments—the butterfly itself and the relief left behind. These two pieces make a fantastic collection that will brighten any room and evoke memories of your child’s classmates and teachers.

These three poles will form the foundation of a new play structure with pull-up bars connecting them and will be enjoyed by future students.

LIVE AUCTION 29. Mem’s Class Project Have you ever seen a school where music rules? “Down By The Bay” is just one of many beloved songs at The Little School’s ever-popular Friday Sings. The multi-talented musician/artists of Mem’s class created their version of some of the characters from the song, including a whale with a polka dot tail, a frog walking a dog and a duck driving a truck. Their images will be part of The Little School’s sing-alongs for years to come, as they have been applied to the front and back of a fantastic Martin Dreadnaught acoustic-electric guitar that will be donated to The Little School. By winning this auction, your family’s name will be engraved on the case of this guitar, and you’ll present it to the school at the next All School Sing. And you get to take home a wonderful ukulele covered in the same artwork for your musician at home to enjoy. Priceless

That’s sure to have earned at least one wish, maybe more. Win the auction for this spectacular piece and the wishes are transferred to you at no extra cost!

LIVE AUCTION 33. Vivian’s Class Project Vivian’s class created a charming memento of all the things they love about The Little School. The shutterbugs of the class first took pictures of their most treasured TLS icons, including the library, Nancy, the bathtub, trees, Peter, Barb, playgrounds, mushrooms, and of course, each other! Using their photos as inspiration, the students drew their own versions of these objects on foam to capture the things they love and want to remember about the school. Printing and combining their work, they created a wonderful framed art piece that captures the essence of a year at The Little School.

34. Cindy S’s Class Project Welcome to the jungle! Cindy S’s explorers studied the wildlife of the rainforest and created an amazing piece of art to show their results. After choosing an animal, the junior naturalists wrote a report about it and painted or drew their subject and then attached their drawings to their own custom-made tie-dyed canvases, including some of the shapes of their animal’s natural habitat. Go wild and make these animals part of your own personal jungle!

36. Kristin’s Class Project Kristin’s class project is a mixed media abstract inspired by the works and methods of Jackson Pollock and Wassily Kandinsky, both recognized for their contributions to the early abstract-expressionism style. The kids had three sessions to complete their masterpiece that were divided into three easy steps: cut paper, glue paper and scribble on the final boards. Great fun for everyone! Kristin and Sheila also incorporated the artist theme into the curriculum so the kids had a chance to explore different art forms beyond the class project. February was full of books about artists, their methods and hands-on practice.

LIVE AUCTION 37. Melissa’s Class Project Jackson Pollock’s paintings were unique and sensational, and they established a new way of making art which by-passed traditional painting rules. In his drip paintings, he invented a method that was very original because his brush never touched the canvas. Inspired to break convention and try their own artistic endeavor, Melissa’s class used a variety of tubes filled with three paint colors—black, white and red. Just like Pollock, the kids dripped, dribbled, splashed, splattered, flung, squirted and poured paint right onto the canvases. What Melissa’s class came up with was nothing short of a masterpiece.

SILENT TWO 2058. 2009 Quilceda Creek Palengat Proprietary Red The Quilceda Creek 2009 Palengat Proprietary Red Wine displays the wonderful aromatic perfume of the Horse Heaven Hills A.V.A. Planted in 1997-2002 on deep, consistent, Sagehill series soil, the Palengat Vineyard is family-owned. It is located on an ideal south facing slope on Phinny Hill, right next to the world famous Champoux Vineyard. Palengat Vineyard is managed by Paul Champoux and is 8.5 acres in size, with 59% of the vines being high density (2270 vines/ acre). Having this many vines per acre fills in the mid-palate often missing from varietals such as Cabernet Franc. The wine showcases floral violet, pain grille and blackberry blossoms hovering above a deep, rich, decadent core of black current, blackberry, fig and plum fruit infused with Asian spices. Aged in 100% new French Oak for 22 months, it is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Merlot. Drink now through 2026. “Wine Advocate” #196, Aug. 2011 barrel sample: 96-98 pts.

$125.00 Ryan & Robyn Hites

This blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon 9% Merlot is from the Red Mountain American Viticultural Area in Benton County, Washington. Stephen Tanzer’s “International Wine Cellar” gives this wine 92 points, saying: “Raspberry aroma shows an enticing sweetness. Broad, sappy and concentrated, displaying superb creamy intensity and depth for vines in their fifth leaf. Sweet dark berry flavors are lifted by a floral top note that carries through to the long, ripe, spicy finish. Conveys an impression of strong dry extract.” Drink now through 2022.
