NEW PATRON

The Attenborough Season

We are delighted that Richard Cadell has agreed to become a Patron of Leicester Drama Society and that Sooty will be an Honorary Patron. Richard Cadell is one of the UK’s brightest creative talents, probably best known to the public as writer and presenter of the legendary Sooty Show currently the highest watched children’s show on ITV. Richard was hand-picked by Matthew Corbett to take over when he retired in 1998. He has become a great friend of the Corbett family and now owns all the rights to Sooty, including Harry Corbett’s archive of props and scripts. Richard has since received the ITV Children’s Comedy Award from Jonathan Ross, and continues to appear as a guest on countless prime time television and radio chat shows. Hand in hand with being Sooty’s “right hand man”, Richard is an experienced actor, most notably playing lead comic roles in more than twenty pantomime seasons in major UK Theatres. Richard is a respected Pantomime writer, Director and Producer. He also spent many years writing and directing The New Basil Brush Show. Whilst still at Leicester’s Lancaster Boys’ School Richard won the Magic Circle Young Magician of the Year, and is now so well respected in the magic world that he was recently awarded the elite member of the Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star.

A young Richard Attenborough performing in the Leicester Drama Society’s production of Julius Caesar in 1937.

Richard is well known for his spectacular illusions and for several years toured in his very own illusion show complete with 16 dancers. His most famous illusion is his mid air vanishing motorbike resulting in the bike and Richard reappearing at the back of the theatre instantly. Richard is very proud to be a patron of The Little Theatre. The Theatre holds a special place in his heart. As a child he played many roles here encouraged by his mother and keen member of the LDS, the late Judith Pearson. Sooty is equally proud to be a patron, boasting over six decades in show business without saying a word.

Feb Sat 014 2 15th am & 0 11.3 0pm 2.3 0 £8.0

To mark his 90th birthday Leicester Drama Society is dedicating its season to Lord Attenborough. The Society has benefited from Lord Attenborough’s support and generosity over so many years. His son, Michael, has kindly written the following to lead us into what promises to be a varied and entertaining programme. Though born in Cambridge, my father’s home town is unquestionably Leicester. It is where he spent his childhood, where he was educated and where he began to dream about becoming an actor. His father was Principal of Leicester University College and oversaw it become the fully fledged university it is today. His mother was the daughter of the headmaster of the school where my grandpa got his first major teaching job. So you can see that there was no doubting my father’s academic background, and that it was to university that my grandfather wished his eldest son to go.

However, my dad had other ideas! He knew from an early age that he wanted to act and it was in the Little Theatre that he began to test out and flex those creative muscles. Not to put too fine a point on it, grandpa was appalled! But my dad was not to be deterred. So, a compromise was reached; if dad got a scholarship to the finest acting Academy in the world (RADA), then he could follow that path. If he failed, he was to go to university and that would be the end of the matter! Well, needless to say, the young Richard Attenborough got that scholarship and the rest is history. When I was in Leicester in 2009 to receive my Honorary Degree I was shown College House where he lived as a child and which is now a university admin building. The Richard Attenborough Arts Centre, built principally for the disabled, is also on the campus. It was to the Leicester Museum and Art Gallery that he chose to lend some of his collection of Picasso ceramics. I can think of no more appropriate place than the Little Theatre to mark his ninetieth birthday in 2013 when I hope the people of Leicester will remember and celebrate his work, not only as an Oscar-winning director of international renown, but also as an actor of outstanding range and power. I can only tell you that it will mean a great deal to him and all the family. Michael Attenborough

Take one glass slipper, a magic pumpkin and a Fairy Godmother, mix them together with a charming Prince, a girl with a kind heart and an invitation to the royal prom at the palace and the recipe for the perfect romance should be complete. But when you add two nasty stepsisters, Claudia and Tess, life over at Down-turn Abbey isn’t as happy as it should be.

Stir carefully folding in song and dance, plenty of laughs and audience participation, add sparkling scenery and costumes and we have the great British Panto Bake-Off. Building on our reputation for presenting traditional Family Pantomime, here in the heart of Leicester, we promise to make Cinderella a magical, Christmas treat to remember.

However, the proof of the pudding is in the baking, so with the added ingredient of Buttons and a sprinkle of magic fairy dust, we can guarantee the perfect fairy-tale ending for our beautiful Cinderella.

No admittance to children under 3.

Monday 14th - Saturday 19th October 2013 Directed by Nadine Beasley Henry Pulling, a mild-mannered retired banker, leads a quiet life tending his beloved dahlias and never straying too far from his Southwood, England home. But when his eccentric and outrageous Aunt Augusta suddenly appears in his life with mysterious information about his past, Henry is drawn from the safety of his flower beds into a series of absurd and exotic international adventures. Henry, Aunt Augusta and more than 25 characters are inventively portrayed by just four actors who switch identities, nationalities, ages and genders in this exciting theatrical escapade. Adapted from the celebrated novel by Graham Greene, Travels with my Aunt takes you on an irreverent, often hilarious and absolutely unforgettable adventure...

Sister Aloysius rules over St Nicholas Catholic School in New York with a firm authority that puts her at odds with the understanding and friendly Father Flynn. Caught in the crossfire is Sister James, whose youthful innocence leads her to sow a seed of doubt that ignites a situation that is ultimately beyond her control. Former MP, London Mayor and one-time leader of the GLC, Ken Livingstone discusses his extraordinary political career. There’s plenty to talk about. How he came under heavy fire from the media in the 1980s when they dubbed him ‘Red Ken’, their rubbishing of his support of controversial issues such as republicanism, lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender rights, a united Ireland, his bitter clash with Margaret Thatcher and her resulting abolition of the Greater London Council. A polarising figure in British politics, Livingstone is the author of two autobiographies, If Voting Changed Anything, They’d Abolish It (1987) and You Can’t Say That (2012).

John Motson - Motty to his many fans - is one of the best known personalities in sports broadcasting. He has been a member of the Match of the Day team for 40 years and is regarded by many as the voice of football.

LDS Youth Theatre 2013-2014

City of Culture

The LDS Youth Theatre goes from strength to strength under the guidance of our highly experienced and qualified leaders, and during the year over eighty young actors have taken part in the new format of three Saturday groups: (Group A) 9-10.30am 8-12yrs. (Group B)11-12.30pm 13-18yrs. (Group C - Seniors)12.50-2.20pm 13-18yrs.

Leicester is competing to become UK City of Culture in 2017. As part of the rich culture of Leicester, we are contributing to the development of the proposal. The City of Culture, is not just a 12 month event, there needs to be a build-up in the preceeding years for the city and its people to raise their awareness of art and literature, theatre and cinema, dance and music,

There will be another of our highly successful ‘Play in a Week’ sessions on 15 -19 July for thirty young actors who will arrive on Monday morning and perform two shows on Friday evening. The ‘stimulus’ for creating the show - the script lies with all of them - will be LOOK OUT, BEHIND YOU! CAREFUL IT MAY BE A TRICK!!! There will be more ‘Plays in a Week’ planned throughout the year, and full details of these will be announced at a later date. They will be very popular, so early booking will be advisable. There may be some vacancies for young people in YT Groups A and B, so please see the Little Theatre website for details, or contact the Little Theatre Office.

Senior Youth Theatre in final weeks of rehearsal for Dracula Spectacula

During the past theatre year, the Senior Youth Theatre presented their annual production in June, and this year it was the spooky musical Dracula Spectacula. There have also been Open Rehearsals and Workshops when parents and friends are invited to view the development of the exciting work the young people are engaged in.

Finally – please support the work of the LDS Youth Theatre - all three groups are extremely talented, work with great enthusiasm, and fully deserve your interest. We are already seeing members of the YT moving into the work of the main theatre and long may that continue. Paul Phillips – LDS Youth Theatre Leader John Ghent – Trustee for Productions
