C>+-0>$99$-%NHA%C>+O$99%P$Q>% R<%,+-%C>+-0>$99H;#%*H?$S Jim Stowell, one-man theater sensation and storyteller extraordinaire, will perform as the next teller in residence for Jonesborough’s popular Storytelling Live! series. Stowell is a relatively new voice in the storytelling world, having performed at the National Storytell3(?#U+/%36'$#"!.#%-+#4./%#%3&+#f9/%#$'/%# )+'.;#F9%#'/#'#$!(?%3&+#*+."!.&+.# on the theater scene, the sister art of storytelling has always been on his radar. “They were sort of parallel worlds -+.+#3(#%-+#=>3(#D3%3+/AN#-+#/')/;#LP# went to see them sometimes, and %-+)#1'&+#%!#/++#&+#/!&+%3&+/;N#M+# started transitioning from theater to storytelling after sharing the stage with Kevin Kling, another prominent ,3((+'*!$3/#/%!.)%+$$+.#'(5#".+:9+(%# 1!(%.329%!.#%!#g<@; For Stowell, who often writes about his travels around the world, the shift from one-man shows to stories was a natural one. “For me, it’s like going from writing novels to >.3%3(?#/-!.%#/%!.3+/AN#-+#+V*$'3(/;# “I used to do these two-hour long plays. Now I do stories that last from 10 minutes to half an hour. They each -'6+#%-+3.#!>(#9(3:9+#5+&'(5/;N In addition to his travel stories about Ireland, Central America, and Y!9%-#B&+.31'A#Y%!>+$$#".+:9+(%$)# talks about his colorful boyhood in south Texas, where he was raised just ten miles from the Mexican border, as well as the 15 years he spent backpacking through California in the 1960s and ‘70s.

These days, he leads a relatively settled life, dividing his time between the Twin Cities, where he lives with his wife, and northern Wisconsin, where he spends the summer months working as another kind of teller in residence. There, he works as a park ranger from May to September, living in a historic lighthouse on Lake

Superior and sharing stories about its glory days with the park’s many visitors. Celebrating Women on Air Locally produced original radio program, Women On Air, celebrates her 25th year of broadcast this month with a web-based story collecting project. Using Facebook as a platform for written communications, WOA invites listeners from across the country to post short stories about their connections to the show. Susan Lachmann, host and producer, cites the world wide web as a key component to making the show’s content available, relevant and everexpanding. “We have so many more options these days when it comes to &+53'#'11+//AN# says Lachmann, “It’s important to offer audiences variety in formats, venues and schedule. Women On Air now has four-weekly program slots, whereas up until now, the show has been only once or twice a week. We also are part of shared programming efforts in partnership with WETS, g<@#&+&2+.#/%'%3!(A#'(5#KQMDA# College and Community radio. “It’s a win-win for listeners in other time zones as well; Scotland listeners are six hours ahead of Tennessee while west coast and Alaska listeners are three hours later. It didn’t surprise any of us when Susan and Andy announced their engagement (different Andy, yes I know /!&+!(+#+$/+#>3%-#%-+#/'&+#4./%# name, don’t you?), the two of them had been a solid item for a couple of years. They had met at a Christmas party I threw a few years back, and ever since they’ve held me in a certain '&!9(%#!"#L-3?-#.+?'.5N#'/#%!# being the catalyst that kicked off the relationship.

It was a cold, but nice autumn afternoon when I met Andy and Sue for lunch. We sat there engaging in idle chit-chat, but then time came for them to tell me what they wanted to see me about. L=!#2+#2$9(%N#Y9+#/%'.%+5A# “We were wondering if you’d be interested in helping us plan our >+553(?;N I shot them an odd look. The other Andy said, “We want a wedding with an art deco look, and since no one knows retro &!.+#%-'(#)!9#5!;;;N#Y9/'(#/'35# they both didn’t want me to feel pressured into doing it, considering my own misfortunes with relationships (12 divorces as of

last week). With reservations, I accepted, much to the relief of the bride. A big load was taken off my shoulders immediately, when Sue told me that her and Andy had already booked both a church and reception hall - the only worries I would have would be decorations, food, and making sure the whole thing went off without a hitch. They had already began %-+#*.!1+//#!"#4(53(?#%-+#.3?-%# bakery to do the cake, another task that I wouldn’t have to fret with, but I was still going to taste as many samples of free cake as possible. I had three months to pull the whole thing together, and late on a Friday afternoon, the three of us took off to take a glance at the reception hall. No one slept that night, I think exhaustion turned into pure excitement and anxiousness over what the following day would bring. Things were running smoothly, I went by the hall before heading to the church, all was being put in place, the kitchen was running at top speed, and I felt that I could begin taking that sigh of relief. The wedding began, and we all felt good about it. There was one little hitch, however. Doomed to forever relive great triumphs and devastating artistic disasters, these spiritual shadows are reported by witnesses who have

seen them in theatrical sites across the world. McConnelsville, Ohio, is not the 4./%#*$'1+#%-'%#1!&+/#%!#&3(5#"!.# most people when thinking about opera houses. It is the kind of town into which you can step and instantly be transported back to a time when Andy Taylor wasn’t just a character in a TV show. He was your neighbor and your friend. The /*3.3%#!"#%-+#41%3%3!9/#/&'$$#%!>(# sheriff lives on in the good people of this town. F9%A#%-+.+#'.+#&91-#53""+.+(%#

and darker spirits moving silently amongst the neat houses and businesses that line the main and side streets of this lovely village. McConnelsville is embraced by the Muskingum River. A tree dressed town /:9'.+A#>!.%-)#!"#,'.%)#,1U$)S/# best hoverboard moves, provides a visual lynchpin for this community of about 2,000 souls. So lovely during the day, but as evening approaches with her brilliant palate of colors, the town’s permanent residents begin to make themselves known. Although the

town is small, there is so much paranormal activity, that there is a L?-!/%#>'$7N#!""+.+5#%!#3(%+.+/%+5# visitors and locals alike who have a penchant for a good story. The Old Twin City Opera House is the epicenter for many of these local legendary stories of spectral activity. This is the location where 14 ghosts are said to dwell; where heavy footsteps are heard on catwalks and a little girl’s voice echoes through the decades as she forgives her mother for the one night of neglect that ended in her death. It could be said that there are events and people seared into the very fabric of the town’s collective consciousness. The old opera house, besides serving as a repository for lost souls, is a mesmerizing display of late-Victorian architecture; with lovely detailed woodwork and ornate lighting found throughout the building. Each hallway, nook and cranny, provides a visual feast "!.#%-+#+)+/;#8!.?+!9/#/%'3(+5#?$'//# gives passage to sunlight which, dressed in the rich colors of the glass, dance on the walls and ceiling of the foyer located just inside the entrance to the theatre. The stage, not overly large, is the heart of this red brick ode to the theatrical arts.

It is on this stage that I am set to deliver a presentation on Talking with the Dead as part of the paranormal conference, The Great Appalachian Spook Show. Unfortunately, electricity was unreliable during that time period and the interior of the theatre was suddenly enveloped in the coal black hue of 5'.7(+//;#F)#%-+#%3&+#%-+#".'(%31# theatre supporters had rounded up enough lanterns to provide /9"413+(%#$3?-%A#&!/%#!"#%-+#1.!>5# had gone. This was an unfortunate move on their part, as historic newspaper articles report that the show went on - brilliantly. Years and then decades have &+$%+5#'>')#/3(1+#%-'%#4./%#*+."!.mance. During this time, ten known

For good measure, the super moon that has been touted so much in the media and among science circles will take place tonight. In the case of the Old Twin City Opera House, perhaps the case could be made that the inability for some actors to escape the theatre in life may be extended into death. After all, this old theatre now has the ability to always open to a packed, but unseen house.
