Preparation for the models of the bridal show will start at 11am as the models begin their hair and make-up transformation courtesy of the stylists at Rouge Salon in Johnson City and make-up maven Ren Allen, Owner of Faces by Ren. In addition to the live fashions, a mannequin bridal show will be ongoing throughout the event in four areas, so brides will have even more opportunities to get a closer look at the gown of their dreams!

Registration for classes in Acting, Playwriting, and Movement & Dance for the stage will be held at JRT on Monday, January 9 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Classes are for students ages kindergarten through adult. Those interested are encouraged to drop by the theatre to register or go on-

line to www.jonesboroughtheatre. com. Through the Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts, Jonesborough continues to develop an arts curriculum with professional performance and visual artists. This season’s theatre arts faculty brings 2&('2"+,&*-&7#@')1'&'34')#'$9'1& in performance professions and arts education. Classes will begin the week of January 16th and end April 19th 2012. Cost is $105 for the 14-week period.

Classes offered: Playwriting will be offered Thursdays, January 19th through April 19th from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The Playwriting workshop will be offered for adults and students in grades 8 to 12. The class will take writers through the entire process of creating a play - from learning the basics of the dramatic form to composing, editing, polishing, and performing their own work. By the end of the class, students will have created and revised a complete 15 to 30 minute script.

Acting I will be offered Mondays, January 16th through April 16th from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. This class is for students in kindergarten to 3rd grade. Acting I students will work on various avenues of theatre, using short monologues/ scenes and pantomime/improvisational games to develop scenes and

story-building skills.

Acting II will be offered Mondays, January 16th through April 16th from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The class is for students in 4th to 7th grades. Acting II students will work on basic to advanced acting skills with improvisation, monologues, and short scenes.

Students will also enhance skills in projection, staging, basic scene design, how to audition and work with props.

Theatre Arts for the Young Professional will be offered Tuesdays, January 17th through April 17th from 4 to 5 p.m. This class is open to 8th through 12th grades. This class incorporates improvisational theatre and essential skill development for stage actors. Theatre Arts for the Young Professional is for students interested in auditioning for professional theatre, college scholarships and young actors who desire an acting class designed for the path of each individual student. Movement and Dance for the Stage will be offered Tuesdays, January 17-April 17 from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.

Movement and Dance for the Stage is designed for students 6th through12th grades. The class encompasses the art of musical theatre, storytelling, and dance history. During these classes students will work on the art of physical

Jonesborough has rich history as a home and setting for cultivating performance and visual arts for people of all ages and abilities.

A dance for shoes The Historic Jonesborough Dance Society will kick off the 2012 contra dance season on Saturday, January 7 with a dance and a shoe drive for Soles4Souls.

Admission is $7, $5 for HJDS members and $5 for full time students. A class for newcomer contra dances will run from 7-7:30 p.m. The dance will go from 7:30-10:30 p.m., with a Klondike Bar break at 9 p.m.

Slides from a recent Soles4Soles trip to Africa will be shown during the break.

Soles4Soles is a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people from all over the country. The charity distributes these shoes to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria all over the world. They will accept any shoe in any condition including adult and child shoes.

“As dancers, we depend on our shoes to enjoy dancing and other activities” offers event organizer David Wiley. “We take so much for granted here in our country when many people throughout the world go without shoes”.

“We are asking people in the community to clean out the closet and bring us shoes that you don’t wear or can no longer wear.”

And our favorite star, the Sun, is beginning to crank up its active phase in a little understood 11-year solar cycle that peaks again in 2012.

Churches, schools, neighbors, homeschoolers, musicians, bike riders, community gardens and contra dancers all have their unique communities.

Even though we all know that one person can make a difference, it’s also well known that there is far more strength in numbers.

The Historic Jonesborough Dance Society, as our community is called, has been issued a challenge and we need your help.

Here’s the deal: Over 300 million children worldwide are without shoes. Last year alone, Americans discarded more than 300 million pairs of shoes.

Soles4Souls is a Nashvillebased charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people like you.

They can save your shoes from early death by cleaning them and shipping them to needy people around the world, who will treasure the gift for years to come.

The charity distributes these shoes to victims of abject suffering, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since its inception following the Asian tsunami, Soles4Souls has distributed over 16 million pairs to people in 127 countries.

Shoes help prevent the spread of parasitic diseases that plague over 1.4 billion people worldwide, and they are a basic human necessity.

The reality of life for many individuals in developing nations is that having a pair of shoes is a rarity. It is not uncommon for children to grow up in these areas without ever having had a pair of shoes at all.

Some of the most dangerous conditions of going barefoot is the risk of puncture wounds, cuts, scrapes and burns to the

feet. These injuries are almost never treated and can lead to serious infections, amputations and even death.

As dancers, we are uber aware of how important comfortable footwear is to our fun.

Our dance organizer, David Wiley, felt that organizing a shoe drive for Soles4Souls would be the perfect way to help those unfortunate souls that have no soles, as well as a great way for our dance community to make a difference. I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t agree more.

In The Miracle of Mindfullness, Tich Nhat Hanh instructs us to strive for mindfulness in tasks which we may think of as mundane and trivial. He stresses being mindful when we brush our teeth, shower, walk, and even wash the dishes.

Being in the moment is being mindful. When we hurry through the dishes or shoveling the walk to get the task done and over, we are not being mindful, not living in the moment and thus, not enjoying life because we are not being present.

Tich Nhat Hanh also stresses the importance of being quiet and introspective in order to attain mindfulness. He states one of the best ways to do this is by going on a walk. As you begin walking, focus on your breath. Instead of adding yet another best of list, I will reveal my Favorite Films of 2011 list.

Without these individuals and their sometimes herculean efforts, many buildings and sites across the country with a haunted history would simply crumble into oblivion.

Once gone, these often majestic buildings are no longer available as a paranormal laboratory. My mother had a saying, “when people abandon a building, the building dies.” She was so right. Without the energy of people within these structures, it appears that a rapid deterioration takes place. For curbing the onset of this decay, the paranormal community owes individuals who engage in preserving the sites a great debt.

Cynthia Lydick, the director of the Old South Pittsburg Hospital, located in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, has done a wonderful job in directing the cleanup of the massive 68,000 square foot medical facility.

“It is phenomenal how many people have donated their time to assist with the hospital. I am unable to pay them, so I give them a free investigation at the site. If there is a time in which I need volunteers, I put the word out. We have had a wonderful number of people

The hospital closed in 1998 and began a rapid, physical decline. Lydick and her partner Doug Dishroon, stepped in to begin their preservation of the site in 2009. Since then, they and a whole host of volunteers within the paranormal community have moved tons of trash and debris. Today, the hospital hallways are clear and the rooms neat and clean.

The structure now appears as if it is waiting for medical staff and patients to return. Although there is still much to be

done, without the efforts of Lydick and others the building would be doomed to oblivion.

Beginning in 1959, when the doors of the hospital were opened, the medical facility was a hub of life and death for the small community of a little over 3,000 souls, as well as for those individuals who resided in the surrounding area.

Situated on 2.3 acres in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, the medical facility served the region for almost 40 years before the 7**)1&(')'&"*9!'7&-*)&+,'&.$2"&+#0'b&^^& years later, the hospital was in danger of a quick decline, before the intervention by Lydick, Dishroon, and a host of

volunteers.

Because of their efforts, ghosts are still reported to walk the hallways and occupy the rooms of the hospital. Not one or two, but many spirits are said to be locked within the walls. The hospital is so active with paranormal activity that even when still an operational medical facility, security was called in on several complaints, which turned out to be supernaturally based.

This protective sentinel of health care #1&$*+&.$#1,'7&02!#$%&18)'&+,2+&42+#'$+1& are well cared for, spectral physicians, $8)1'15&2$7&'@'$&*-.9'&(*)!')1&1+#""&1+2--& the hospital. They continue to care for

patients’ spirits, which are permanently attached to the medical center.

The hospital has evolved into a “para-alternative research facility,” according to Lydick. “The location provides a safe training area where serious paranormal researchers and enthusiasts can go to test theories about equipment 2$7&4)*9'78)'1&81'7&#$&+,'&.'"7:&P-&)'searchers discover that a theory is valid, they can then use it on an investigation for a client, “she said.

Without the movement for preserving this active paranormal site, hundreds, perhaps thousands of investigators would be denied the opportunity to roam the halls of the building seeking paranormal anomalies.

“The hospital gives individuals a rare opportunity to seek answers to questions that we all have about the afterlife.” The facility is not open to +,'&%'$')2"&48?"#9&2$7&#1&7'.$#+'"=& not a place for thrill seekers. What the hospital provides is unique in that it is a laboratory for paranormal investigators.

These preternatural sleuths need one thing in order to test their theories and equipment... ghosts.

He is also a member of the Mountain Ridge Paranormal Research Society (MRPRS). Barry O’Dell and daughters Rachel O’Dell Hodge and Jessica O’Dell Wright are founders of MRPRS. These well-known people within the regional paranormal community are actively engaged in preserving St. Albans.

“A.C. Wilson, a historical preservationist said, ‘I think that in 20 years that we would be really sad that these (St. Albans Sanatorium) buildings are gone.’ I agree. Certainly another historic location would have disappeared if not for the effort of Hanauer and MRPRS. These individuals have worked tirelessly on the cleanup and maintenance of the site. The team developed and manned a haunted house, which raised over $50,000 this past October.

Hanauer and MRPRS are currently working on having the St. Albans Sanatorium buildings added to the registry of historic sites. If successful, the designation would help protect the building from destruction for years to come.

There are so many dedicated paranormal teams in this country that are also supporting the effort to save these types of locations. After all, if not for the efforts to preserve these types of paranormal sites, where would the ghosts go? Do they just fade away or become vagabonds waiting for a new building to be built over the site of their old abode? Questions, it’s all we have now, when talking and thinking about phantoms.

The family members are all gone - something you may be thankful for. People go back to work knowing no breaks are coming soon, so this is when some may be struck down with what I call New Year Blues.

New Year Blues are not like a switch when you sudden go from feeling great to feeling bad, they creep up on you, slowly.

When the last of the left over gift bottles of wine are gone, and the last of those snacks in the back of your fridge vanish from the New Year’s Party, that’s when it starts.

Sure, you felt a little sad taking down those decorations and packing up the tree, or chucking it to the curb - if that’s the case, but this is different. You wonder if that cute redhead, Suzy Creamcheese, is gonna call you back, or if she was just drunk and doesn’t even recall who that mysterious number belongs to.

There’s something very melancholic about driving along the neighborhood streets that (''!5&2$7&1''#$%&7)#'7&2$7&,2"-&7'27&<,)#1+021&+)''1&"2=#$%&$'3+&+*&+)21,&92$1&(2#+#$%&+*& be shipped off to the dump.

What was once the centerpiece of someone’s home, is now just waiting to rot alongside torn paper with pictures of Santa and Frosty on them. You were smart, you have a fake tree that you can reuse, then admire during the year when you go down to your basement to sort through old comic books.

But this need not happen to you, with the fade of parties and activity, there is still a whole fresh new year to look at it. It can be an optimistic time, despite there being a few pessimistic enablers.

As you might know from reading past columns, I usually have but one resolution each year - not to watch The Sound Of Music. For the past 16 years I have faithfully kept this resolution, although I did have a crisis of conscience when I went to see my daughter in Northeast State’s stage production a couple of years ago. But I still haven’t seen the movie, and am therefore making the same resolution for the coming year. In case you’re concerned, I don’t have anything against this movie, but because I have never seen it, my yearly resolution is very easy to keep. Look forward to my progress )'4*)+&+,'&120'&+#0'&$'3+&='2): Last January I added one additional resolution to my list - to watch all four seasons of Mad Men, 0=&-2@*)#+'&L_&1')#'15&(,#9,&#1&1+#""& #$&4)*789+#*$&2$7&'34'9+'7&+*&4)'0#')&V'21*$&/#@'&#$&+,'&$'3+&0*$+,& *)&1*:&B'9281'&P&*($&+,'&.)1+&-*8)& seasons on Blu-Ray, and had not (2+9,'7&+,'0&*$&L_5&P&-'"+&+,#1& was a simple resolution to keep.

By the end of January I had indeed watched all four seasons, and have since read through three volumes of scholarly and semi-scholarly essays about the series. So I guess you could say I am somewhat of an '34')+&*$&+,#1&1')#'1:&Q-&9*8)1'5&2""& that knowledge and $5 will get me a luncheon special at Amigos.

When it comes to predictions, P&20&?=&$*&0'2$1&2$&'34')+:&Q-& course, prediction is an impossible task, but we persist on trying our hand at this failed art in spite of all the evidence to the contrary.

In last year’s column I predicted we would be hearing a lot about Teleportation and Transhumanism, but I didn’t see much evidence of these hot topics this past year.

Maybe they will surface again this coming year. No doubt political pundits hope for a resurgence of Transhumanism in their search for a viable presidential candidate.

My predictions that we would soon be glued to the set watching '39#+#$%&-2)'&"#!'&Divorce With The Stars and Rehab With The Stars also didn’t pan out, but we still persist in our fascination with American Idol and Dancing With The Stars.

One thing, however, is certain about the coming year and that is we’ll be hearing more about the Mayan Calendar than we should.

In so many ways, the world as we know it ends every day, and change is the one constant in our lives. And things will be no 7#--')'$+&2-+')&F'9'0?')&\^:&G39'4+& for the fact that Kim Kardashian will have been elected President in a surprise political upset - with

the complete breakdown of the traditional political process and the '3#1+#$%&92$7#72+'1&?'#$%&?'1'+&?=& various scandals, Ms. Kardashian became the only logical choice, given the pop culture nature of modern American politics. Many voters will apparently be attracted +*&,')&+*+2"&"29!&*-&'34')#'$9'&2$7& talent. At least the White House wardrobe will be stunning. And in case you’re wondering, Kardashian’s running mate will be crooner Michael Buble.

development, get ready for the formation of new political parties that will emerge from the events of the past year. One political faction, the Uncooperative Party, will 27*4+&2&4"2+-*)0&+,2+&'34)'11'1& its opposition to any proposal or idea advocated by anyone who doesn’t belong to the party. A very simple and uncomplicated stance - if you’re for it, we’re against it.

The App Party will propose letting Google, Apple, and Amazon run the government. Sounds like 2&4)'++=&'-.9#'$+&4"2$&+*&0':&L,'& Occupy Wall Street movement will morph into a corollary political party called Occupy Wal-Mart And Holiday Inn. Members of this party will at least have plenty of stuff to enjoy and a comfortable place to sleep while they protest the other two parties. Where is Hunter Thompson now that we really need him?

On the literary front, novelists J.K. Rowling and Stephanie Myers will join forces to write a series of best-selling books about sparkly vampires and aging bespeckled warlocks. Needless to say, these books, which will be published monthly, will be made into a series of blockbuster movies that promises to resurrect the acting careers of Lindsey Lohan and long-forgot+'$&L_&1+2)&G)#!&G1+)2725&(,*&(#""& both receive awards for their roles in these movies.

Apps will of course continue to dominate the way we do business and have fun while using digital gadgetry. Can a Kelly’s Place App be far behind? And we will continue to do less and less with desktops and laptops. But our use of paper will increase, as will the services of more and more shredding companies. No doubt smartphones will become even smarter (as well as 0*)'&9*04"#92+'7l5&2$7&+'3+#$%&(#""& replace most forms of correspondence, as Google takes over the du+#'1&*-&+,'&?2$!)84+&2$7&#$'-.9#'$+& postal service.
