The new season begins this week for Barter Theatre, with a return of Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps in what promises to be another stellar season for Abingdon’s historic theater.

Barter Theatre artists design everything from the costumes, sets, props and more to bring an author’s words on the page to vivid life on the stage.

A lot of people don’t realize the productions do not actually cover the '&$%$*&1*F"&0='#/3*<=(-#%;*F,"1&"5(/',$*M*1=/0"(#$#/3*#$*(*5(Q&"*$&="',*&1* revenue.

For example, donations go to help fund student matinees. Barter works with teachers to produce plays and musicals – and provide free study guides for the shows – that directly and positively impact students’ performance on standardized testing and provide a well-rounded education as many schools have seen budget cuts to their own arts education programs. Classic and student-relevant productions are scheduled in the morning so teachers can bring students during the school day.

D The Arts Depot is currently featuring four area artists in the Memberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Showcase Gallery.

Artists displaying their works are Rosetta Amos and Adelaide Moss both of Abingdon, VA, Carol Murray, of Marion VA, and father and stepdaughter Darris Stanley and Makayla Hale of Castlewood, VA. This exhibit will continue through February 25.

Adelaide Moss grew up in Connecticut, lived in New York City, then Massachusetts and New Hampshire before moving to Abingdon in 2004. As an Art History Major at Hollins University, she spent many hours in studio art classes, painting mostly in oil and concentrating mainly on portraiture and landscapes. She has continued to paint during the years following college, with some art training here and there, most recently in Sharon, NH, at the Sharon Art Center. It was there that Adelaide took courses in F($%,-*F(#/%#/38*!0,-(#0,*$(;$)*6K* feel that artists are always evolving, and it will be interesting to see what

direction my art will take in the future... I think art is something that for me continuously evolves and I believe artists should always be exF,"#5,/%#/3*(/0*'4(/3#/389*[&"*%4#$* show, she has tried to concentrate on oils. Her show consists of all recent work including several portraits as well as many scenes that depict the Appalachian scenery. Adelaide hopes her work will convey the sense of joy she has found in being able to paint our beautiful surroundings where she will never run out of artistic inspiration!

Father and stepdaughter, Darris Stanley, Jr. and Makayla Hale will present a combined exhibit. Darris was born in Kingsport Tennessee and has resided in Castlewood, VA for the past 10 years. He enjoys acrylics but works mostly in pencil, as a child 6K*0#0/L%*(-7(;$*4(.,*F(#/%*(/0* canvas, but I always had paper and F,/'#-98* He enjoys doing portraits and the '4(--,/3,$*&1*'(F%="#/3*%4,*6-#R,/,$$* &1*$&5,&/,89 Makayla Hale is 16 years old and also lives in Castlewood, Virginia.

Like her stepfather, she grew up drawing with whatever materials $4,*'&=-0*2*/08*T(R(;-(*#$*'="M rently in her second year of art at

Castlewood High school. Although $4,*,/Q&;$*(--*("%)*$4,*$(;$*67&"R#/3* in pencil is my favorite media... I tend to focus on people and animals %&*#/$F#",*5,8*B(%'4#/3*5;*$%,F0(0* fuels my passion in art. Each year since I was 4 years old I have won at my local fair in Russell County Virginia. Art gives me an escape from reality. I am honored to display my work at the Arts Depot Members showcase.

Carol Bates Murray has also sketched and painted since she can remember and is happiest with a brush or pencil in her hand. EC(;1*.;*0?(;%;<*\%2'*E"C()*,3\$*6'./C%3;*@.;*J((?(& Get in the Super Bowl spirit with Super Bowl Champion Dan Reeves, at King College Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m. Reeves is best known for his 23-year head coaching career with the Denver Broncos, New York Giants, and Atlanta Falcons in which he amassed an overall record of 190-165-2.

Prior to his head coaching career, Dan Reeves spent 16 years in the Dallas Cowboys’ organization e*2*.,*($*(*F-(;,")*%4",,*($*(*F-(;,"f coach, and eight as an assistant coach. He played or coached in a ",'&"0*/#/,*O=F,"*E&7-$*M*2*.,*7#%4* the Dallas Cowboys, three with Denver, and one with Atlanta – winning Super Bowl VI as a player for the Cowboys.

A Georgia native, Reeves attended the University of South S("&-#/()*74,",*4,*F-(;,0*<=("M terback from 1962-1964. He was inducted into USC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977.

In 1965, Reeves signed as a free agent with the Cowboys. During eight seasons as an all-purpose back, Reeves amassed 1,990 rushing yards and 1,693 receiv-

ing yards. The Cowboys made the playoffs every year of Reeves’ playing career, reaching the Super Bowl twice and winning Super Bowl VI with a 24-3 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

Reeves’ coaching career began when he joined the Dallas coaching staff in 1970, taking on a dual role as player coach for three seasons.

In 1981, Reeves was named head coach of the Denver Broncos. During his 12-year tenure in Denver, Reeves guided the Broncos to six post-season appearances, includ#/3*2*.,*0#.#$#&/(-*%#%-,$)*%4",,*![S* championships and three Super Bowl appearances (Super Bowl

XXI, XXII and XXIV).

In 1993, Reeves left Denver to

become head coach of the New York Giants, where he served as head coach for four seasons and compiled a 31-33 record.

In 1997, Reeves was named head coach of the Falcons, where he coached for seven seasons and compiled a record of 49-59-1. After 3&#/3*HMI*4#$*2*"$%*$,($&/)*P,,.,$*

led Atlanta to its greatest season in franchise history and was named NFL Coach of the Year in 1998. That year, the Falcons went 14–2 in route to win/#/3*#%$*2*"$%*W[S*S4(5M pionship and a berth in Super Bowl XXXIII, where they were defeated by the Broncos, 34-19.

After coaching, Reeves became involved with broadcasting and served as (*W[:*(/(-;$%*1&"*B,$%M 7&&0*?/,8*\,*'="",/%-;* resides in the Atlanta, Ga., area with his high school sweetheart of 46 years, his wife Pam. He and Pam have three children and six grandchildren.

Popular thinking has led us to believe that if we, the consumers, don’t purchase, the economy #$/L%*3&#/3*%&*3"&78*?1*'&="$,*%4#$* opinion was formed when natural ",$&="',$*(FF,(",0*%&*+,*#/2/#%,)* at the beginning of the Industrial P,.&-=%#&/8*B,L.,*-,("/,0*(*%4#/3* or two since then, and now realize %4(%*b("%4L$*",$&="',$*(",*W?N*#/2nite, and, in fact, are running out.

Unfortunately, we still live in a society dominated by that growth economy, whose logic is not creating because we need things, but just for the sake of it.

Here’s a personal example: In former East Germany, the most ,12'#,/%*S&55=/#$%*,'&/&5;)* &12'#(-*",3=-(%#&/$*$%#F=-(%,0* that refrigerators and washing machines must last 25 years! I’m pretty sure my mom must’ve bought similar appliances when

she set up housekeeping in the 1950s, and then passed them on to me when I left home in the early hHg$8*K*=$,0*%4,5*1&"*(+&=%*Gg*;,("$* before I passed them along to another young homemaker friend, replacing them with newer and better*(FF-#(/',$8*?"*$&*K*%4&=34%8* I was seduced, I tell you! Clothing used to be made so well, that it was said you could be married and +="#,0*#/*%4,*$(5,*$=#%8*B#/0*=F* watches and transistor radios were made to last for decades, with no batteries to replace. From cookware and furniture, to telephones, typewriters, and buildings-they were all built to last.

Many of us own a printer these days. Looking at the service manuals of different printer manufacturers tells me the lifespan of many printers is set by the engineers right from the start. This is achieved by placing a preprogrammed chip which stores the number of prints deep inside the printer.

An engineer in Russia is so fed up with that planned obsolescence that he has set up a website where you can download (for free) an application program that will reset

Product Lifecycle is a modern euphemism for planned obsolescence. Regardless of what it’s called, we as consumers should +,*F",F(",0*%&*234%*(3(#/$%*#%8* To help us, a new design model, called Cradle to Cradle is being developed by some companies and governments around the world.

Put simply, it is a holistic, economic, industrial and social framework that seeks to create systems that (",*/&%*Q=$%*,12'#,/%*+=%*,$$,/%#(--;* waste free.

Growth has been the holy grail of our economy and the secret mechanism at the heart of our con$=5,"*$&'#,%;8*E=%*#/2/#%,*3"&7%4* #$*OKTV:X*W?N*V?OOKE:b8*N4",,* crucial factors that govern our buying and spending habits are advertising, planned obsolescence, and credit. It’s time to rethink our entire economic system and our .(-=,$8*!*%"=,*",.&-=%#&/*",<=#",$* a cultural change-a paradigm shift and a change in mentality. By simply reducing consumption and fully integrating those values into our buying decisions, we get more free time to develop other forms of wealth that can’t be exhausted-like

friendship and learning and close knit communities that rely on and help one another. Here are a few ways to combat this issue: 1. Have you stopped to consider that when you constantly pour a stream of money into replacing items that really should last longer, there’s less left to spend on the basics of survival like beans, bullets, and Band-aids?

2. Research products and the companies that make them before you buy them. It’s easy to do on the internet! Is it designed to fail?

3. Consider buying used or reconditioned before buying new.

Saving money on the things we do buy is always a plus, and of course, buying used eliminates using more

This week I am happy to present a double feature! So get your popcorn and preferred soda and let’s go... [#"$%*=F*#$*%4,*/,7*2-5 War Horse, based on a 1982 novel that was later adapted to the stage in 2007.

From the opening scenes you can see this is old Hollywood 2-5M5(R#/3*(%*#%$*+,$%8* The epic is directed by Steven OF#,-+,"3)*$&*;&=*R/&7*%4,*2-5* will feature plenty of his masterful strokes at pulling our heart strings.

N4,*2-5*#$*F&F=-(%,0*+;* excellent British actors (is there any other kind?), including the wonderfully named Benedict Cumberbatch, who recently played Sherlock Holmes in a new BBC series. The main stars &1*%4,*2-5)*(",)*&1*'&="$,)*%4,* horse of the title, named Joey #/*%4,*2-5)*(/0*4#$*%"(#/,"f owner Albert Narracott (Jeremy Irvine).

From the time Joey was born, Albert has admired the thor-

oughbred horse, and makes several attempts to befriend the horse to no avail.

B4,/*%4,*4&"$,*#$*&-0*,/&=34* to auction, Albert’s dad wins the bid even though the family needs a plough horse. Albert is determined to teach Joey to plough for the family, despite the misgivings on his parents and the local townsfolk.

As the story unfolds, Albert’s family becomes so deep in debt they must sell the horse to the ("5;*1&"*=$,*#/*B&"-0*B("*K)* and the breaks the young lad’s heart.

As Albert bids farewell to Joey, he vows to the horse they will eventually be reunited. At this point in the story, we see how Joey makes an impact on the humans he comes in contact with, including British and German soldiers, a fellow large solid black horse, and a French girl.

The story also follows Albert’s time in the army, and how horse and master eventually cross paths once more.

N4,*('%#/3*#/*%4#$*2-5*#$*%&F* notch, and the story has real heart at its core despite the scope of the subject matter.

I was especially impressed with the performance of Irvine, who, despite becoming a solider during the course of the story, conveys an innocence through&=%*%4,*2-58* War Horse*#$*(*2-5*%4(%*#$* a must for fans of cinema and epics in the classic Hollywood $%;-,8*?$'("*+,%%,"*'(--*&/*%4#$* 2-5)*&"*K*7#--*&"3(/#Z,*(*6N(R,* ?$'("9*,.,/%*&=%$#0,*%4,*',"emony.

The latest adventure involves the IMF (Impossible Missions Force), being accuse of blowing up the Kremlin. After the accusations, the U.S. government

Ethan is joined in his efforts by fellow agents Jane Carter (Paula Patton), Benji Dunn (Si5&/*V,33p)*(/0*B#--#(5*E"(/0%* (Jeremy Renner), and the agents experience many harrowing and exciting moments during the course of the story.

Cruise apparently loves heights, as he is actually climbing the outside of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa #/*^=+(#8*B4#-,*/&*$%=/%*0&=+-,* was used, one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most popular movie stars is actually attached to many cables, that were eventually digitally

In addition to the thrills provided by Mr. Cruise, the other actors have plenty of opF&"%=/#%#,$*1&"*%4"#--$)*5(/;*&1*%4,5*#/*234%$* with various villains. Director Brad Bird (The Incredibles), has done a masterful job with his 2"$%*-#.,M('%#&/*2-5)*(/0*R,,F$*(*%#34%*",#3/*&/* the proceedings. To me, Cruise is tailor made for this role, and once again proves why he is a true movie star.

Co-star Renner is apparently using this role to prepare for his new place in the Bourne Identity series, made famous my Matt Damon. In this effort he certainly proves his action hero abilities.

Andy Ross is Andy Ross, which is nothing to sneeze at. A noted writer, poet, raconteur, humorist, and recording artist, Mr. Ross was born in %4,*-(%,*Gmgg$*#/*%4,*$-,,F*.#--(3,*&1*K0(4&)*B;&5#/3)*%&*(*1(5#-;*&1*!-paca Farmers. Always with an interest in the arts, at the age of seven is 74,/*T"8*P&$$*7"&%,*4#$*2"$%*F#,',*&1*7"#%#/3)*%4,*F&,5*A Child’s View of an Alpaca. After college - in the 1940s - Mr. Ross then began writing farm reports for his hometown paper, The Idaho Seeker.

His work at The Idaho Seeker would get noticed by the National Geographic, who would ask Mr. Ross to be their Alaska Correspondent. There he would write what is considered by many to be among the 2/,$%*F#,',$*&1*/(%=",*Q&="/(-#$5*,.,"*7"#%%,/8*N4,*5&$%*',-,+"(%,0*&1* which are his Tundra Trilogy that is comprised of the pieces: The Moose Get Up At Dawn, Starlight on the Snow, and No, Seriously, I Can’t Feel my Toes. Leaving Alaska in the early 1950s, Mr. Ross would spend time in New York City as a Broadway Show critic for The New York Times.

Growing tired of the newspaper grind, Mr. Ross would end his critic phase in 1958, moving to Nashville in order to become host of a local TV talent program. Andy Ross’s People Who Can Barely Sing And Are on TV would air for only two years, but during this two year period is when Mr. Ross met David Pitt. Together Pitt and Ross would soon become a well known songwriting duo around Music Row. Rumor’s began to circulate that Mr. Ross was interested in recording an album.

Virtually unknown as a singer, it was struggling label Painted Glass Records that would offer Mr. Ross the chance to record a single - not an album.

T"8*P&$$L$*2"$%*",-,($,*7&=-0*+,*(*S&=/%";*$&/3*4,*'&5F&$,0*7#%4* Mr. Pitt: I Love Her But She Can’t Play The Bongos. The single would fail to chart, however Painted Glass still had faith Mr. Ross could be their 2"$%*+",(R&=%*$%("%)*(/0*'(=%#&=$-;*$#3/,0*4#5*%&*(*%7&*(-+=5*'&/%"('%8* Released in 1969, his debut album, It Only Hurts When I Cry, would sell reasonable well, spawning the low charting single Autumn Wisps.

The real breakthrough, for both Mr. Ross and Painted Glass Records, would come in his decision to change from Country to Pop music. His second album, 1970s The Many Moods of Andy would be a critical and commercial success, spawning four top ten singles: It Hurts To Be Alone, Sunshine Makes The Morning Happen, I Wonder Who She Is and My Eyes Are Up Here. The success of these singles would save Painted Glass from bankruptcy.

Mr. Ross would leave the recording industry in the early 1980s, which would lead him to his popular restaurant chain Andy’s Ham Hovel.

This would end in the mid-1960s, when he would sell the business, and $-&7-;*+,3#/*5(R#/3*(*",%="/*%&*7"#%#/3*M*2"$%*7#%4*4#$*+,$%*$,--#/3*(=%&biography It Only Hurts When I Type. In 2006, after teaching songwriting at Harvard, Mr. Ross would accept a columnist position with The Loafer, based out of Johnson City, Tennessee. It is there that Mr. Ross would come full circle, and remains to this day.

Never a bestseller during Melville’s lifetime, his seafaring novel has nevertheless gone on to earn its reputation as either a book to be avoided or one that belongs on the ever-changing Great American Novel list. ?%4,"*%4(/*4#$*",',/%*-(/0-&'R,0* book about Custer’s Last Stand, author Nathaniel Philbrick has devoted his distinguished literary career to writing thought-provoking books about the sea - my favorite being his reconsideration of the !"#$%&'(’s eventful 17th century voyage that brought a boatload &1*V#-3"#5$*%&*%4,*W,7*B&"-0>* although I admire Philbrick’s account, I prefer Sarah Vowell’s more irreverent take in her amusing, yet provocative, book The Wordy Shipmates, which deals with another group of ambitious New England voyagers, the Puritans (who are often, and erroneously, confused with the Pilgrims). Taken together, these two books give us many insights into early (and still #/D=,/%#(-p*!5,"#'(/*4#$%&";*(/0* mythology.

Philbrick’s new book, Why Read Moby-Dick?, returns him to his favorite subject, this time in the form of a very persuasive argument of why we should indeed read Melville’s much-maligned novel about whale obsession. And, in contrast to its subject, Philbrick’s volume can be read in one sitting, weighing in at only 128 pages and presented in an aesthetically-pleasing format

by Viking.

As one of the best books published last year, I urge you to add it to your reading list. After reading it, you can decide if you want to tackle Melville’s imposing tome.

Even Philbrick, interestingly enough, doesn’t demand that you ",(0*,.,";*7&"08*6K*(5*/&%*&/,*&1* %4&$,*F="#$%$)9*4,*$(;$*#/*4#$*2"$%* '4(F%,")*674&*#/$#$%*&/*",(0#/3*%4,* entire untruncated text at all costs.

Moby-Dick is a long book, and time is short. Even a sentence, a mere phrase, will do. The impor-

J(.1%;<*Moby Dick tant thing is to spend some time with the novel, to listen as you read, to feel the prose adapt to the .("#&=$*.&#',$*%4(%*D&7,0*%4"&=34* Melville during the book’s composition like intermittent ghosts with something urgent and essential to $(;89 !/0*74(%)*;&=*($R)*#$*$&*6="3,/%* (/0*,$$,/%#(-9*(+&=%*(*/&.,-* written 161 years ago? Plenty, according to Philbrick. Each of his 28 short chapters offers many reasons, organized as they are around themes and topics that still resonate, or should resonate, with =$*%&0(;8*K/*4#$*2"$%*'4(F%,")*1&"*#/stance, Philbrick discusses the historical context in which the novel was written. America in the 1850s 7($*6&/*%4,*.,"3,*&1*'(%('-;$5)9* and beset by forces that threatened to tear the nation apart, just as the &5#/&=$*B4#%,*B4(-,*%4",(%,0*%&* rip Captain Ahab’s ship asunder.

Although Melville couldn’t foresee the precise contours of the Civil

B("*%4(%*7($*Gg*;,("$*#/*%4,*1=%=",* when his novel was published, he was aware of the often-violent debates over slavery and westward expansion that were already taking place, especially in the wake of the passage of the divisive Fugitive Slave Act, a piece of legislation that impelled another author, Harriet Beecher Stowe, to pen Uncle Tom’s Cabin and see it through to publication the year following the appearance of Moby-Dick. ?%4,"*'4(F%,"$*3#.,*=$*%4&=34%M provoking meditations on the vastness of the sea and the way it shapes our experience and makes us aware of our mortality, the #/D=,/',*%4(%*&+$,$$#.,*F,"$&/alities like Captain Ahab have on our lives, why Melville’s novel is as much a book of poetry as it is prose, the symbolic connect between sharks and slavery in 19th century America, and how MobyDick can still function as a biology text on the culture and anatomy of

whales.

Philbrick also makes us think about how Ishmael, the novel’s /(""(%&")*(/0*]=,,<=,3)*%4,* 5;$%,"#&=$*V('#2'*#$-(/0,"*74&* 4($*1&=/0*4#$*7(;*%&*%4,*V,<=&0)* 1=/'%#&/*($*6&=%$#0,"$9*(/0*6$%"(/3,"$*#/*(*$%"(/3,*-(/089*K$45(,-)* for instance, tells us in the novel’s opening monologue that going to sea is his salvation - a way to avoid his growing depression (/0*$=#'#0(-*%,/0,/'#,$*`6N4#$*#$* 5;*$=+$%#%=%,*1&"*F#$%&-*(/0*+(--)9* relates Ishmael).

K"&/#'(--;)*4,*2/0$*4#$*%,/=",* with Captain Ahab a pretty terrifying solace. In this, he reminds 5,*&1*B&&0;*!--,/L$*Hannah And Her Sisters character, Mickey, who gives up thoughts of suicide when he wanders into a theatre showing The Marx Brothers’ Duck Soup.

I guess we could say that the sea is Ismael’s version of Mickey’s Marx Brothers movies. Ishmael also shares his role with another

famous literary narrator, Nick Carroway, who relates the tragic tale of Jay Gatsby in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the 1925 novel that is my candidate for The Great American Novel (one I’ve written about before in this column). ?.,"*%4,*;,("$*$#/',*#%$*F=+-#'(tion, critics have found all sorts of symbolism in the pages of Melville’s novel. And, like so much literary criticism, most of it has been pretty far-fetched. This is not to say that Melville didn’t intend his novel to be more than just a narrative, but Philbrick believes we have often found ourselves lost as sea when it comes to this large and imposing novel.

In Chapter 26, which is devoted to the pulse-pounding confrontation between Ahab and his blubbery nemesis, Philbrick cautions =$*%4(%*6E,1&",*7,*'&/%#/=,)*K*/,,0* to make something perfectly clear.

N4,*B4#%,*B4(-,*#$*/&%*(*$;5+&-8* He is as real as you or I. He has a crooked jaw, a humped back, and a wiggle-waggle when he’s really moving fast. He is a thing of blubber, blood, muscle, and bone - a creation of the natural world that %"(/$',/0$*(/;*2'%#&/8*O&*1&"3,%* (+&=%*%";#/3*%&*23=",*&=%*74(%*%4,* B4#%,*B4(-,*$#3/#2,$89*O&)*%4,",* we have it - a plea to keep things =/0,"*'&/%"&-*74,/*7,*F&/%#2'(%,* about Melville’s big book.

K/*4#$*2/(-*'4(F%,")*V4#-+"#'R* does wax philosophical when he concludes that the most compelling reason to read, or re-read, MobyDick is Melville’s own rationale, voiced by lone survivor Ishmael, (+&=%*6^&=+%$*&1*(--*%4#/3$*,("%4-;)* and intuitions of some things 4,(.,/-;>*%4#$*'&5+#/(%#&/*5(R,$* /,#%4,"*+,-#,.,"*/&"*#/20,-)*+=%* makes a man who regards them +&%4*7#%4*,<=(-*,;,89* In the end, Melville’s novel reminds us that the world is an often strange mixture of sacred and secular, knowable and unknowable, and we should think twice 74,/*7,*1,,-*%&&*$,-1M'&/20,/%* (+&=%*74(%*7,*+,-#,.,*#$*%"=,8*B,* should, therefore, avoid the arrogance of Ahab and adopt the more skeptical, and realistic, perspective offered by Ishmael. Maybe we $4&=-0*",<=#",*%4(%*&="*F&-#%#'#(/$* (/0*&12',M$,,R,"$*%(R,*V4#-+"#'RL$* advice and read Melville’s novel.

Sounds like a sensible alternative to being forever lost at sea or taken in by Ahab’s many apprentices.
