In Chapter 26, which is devoted to the pulse-pounding confrontation between Ahab and his blubbery nemesis, Philbrick cautions =$*%4(%*6E,1&",*7,*'&/%#/=,)*K*/,,0* to make something perfectly clear. N4,*B4#%,*B4(-,*#$*/&%*(*$;5+&-8* He is as real as you or I. He has a crooked jaw, a humped back, and a wiggle-waggle when he’s really moving fast. He is a thing of blubber, blood, muscle, and bone - a creation of the natural world that %"(/$',/0$*(/;*2'%#&/8*O&*1&"3,%* (+&=%*%";#/3*%&*23=",*&=%*74(%*%4,* B4#%,*B4(-,*$#3/#2,$89*O&)*%4,",* we have it - a plea to keep things =/0,"*'&/%"&-*74,/*7,*F&/%#2'(%,* about Melville’s big book. K/*4#$*2/(-*'4(F%,")*V4#-+"#'R* does wax philosophical when he concludes that the most compelling reason to read, or re-read, MobyDick is Melville’s own rationale, voiced by lone survivor Ishmael, (+&=%*6^&=+%$*&1*(--*%4#/3$*,("%4-;)* and intuitions of some things 4,(.,/-;>*%4#$*'&5+#/(%#&/*5(R,$* /,#%4,"*+,-#,.,"*/&"*#/20,-)*+=%* makes a man who regards them +&%4*7#%4*,<=(-*,;,89* In the end, Melville’s novel reminds us that the world is an often strange mixture of sacred and secular, knowable and unknowable, and we should think twice 74,/*7,*1,,-*%&&*$,-1M'&/20,/%* (+&=%*74(%*7,*+,-#,.,*#$*%"=,8*B,* should, therefore, avoid the arrogance of Ahab and adopt the more skeptical, and realistic, perspective offered by Ishmael. Maybe we $4&=-0*",<=#",*%4(%*&="*F&-#%#'#(/$* (/0*&12',M$,,R,"$*%(R,*V4#-+"#'RL$* advice and read Melville’s novel. Sounds like a sensible alternative to being forever lost at sea or taken in by Ahab’s many apprentices. See you next week with more New Year’s meditations.
