Until the evening of Feb. 3, 2008, Tom Brady’s career had been pristine, featuring three Super Bowl titles, two Super Bowl MVP awards, not a smudge, scratch or bent corner.

After returning home with a Purple Heart for his service as a marine, he joined with his brother Sonny to form the famous Osborne Brothers that have recorded hits such as Ruby, Roll Muddy River, Kentucky, and of course Rocky Top. In 1994 the Brothers would be inducted into the IBMA Hall of Honor, and then into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in 2002. Society of Illustrators Annual Exhibition features art by 40 stars For 28 years, the Society of Illustrators has sent 40 works from its vaunted annual competition on tour to college and university campuses.

ETSU’s Mary B. Martin School of the Arts brought the exhibition to East ;'..'##''$,+#$)2#+$#'"#8.6$".($+7,#$ year, MBM SOTA and the Department of Art & Design are once again supporting this rare collection of illustrative art.

The work is on display through Feb. 17 in ETSU’s Slocumb Galleries, in Ball Hall on the university campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m to 4:30 p.m. with extended hours .

The Underworld series began with the 2003 original, and was followed by i;1()\3)$1V*0?3$"tion in 2006, and the 2009 prequel, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.

So now fans of those new to the series can watch the movies beginning with the prequel that explains much of the back-story and reveals more about the battles between vampires and lycans (werewolves).

I have always considered the vampires in these movies to be a slick rock star variety, that also have an old world elegance. These vampires are also very action oriented, and are ready to drag out human weapons, i.e. guns, at a moments notice. The werewolves in these movies are of the standard cinema variety, and truly detest their rivals in the underworld.

during The Purge, and taken to a medical corporation called Antigen, where she was placed in cryogenic suspension, to allow those at the corporation to use her in an attempt to create a antidote for the virus that creates vampires and lycans.

Selene is soon freed from her “frozen” state, by who she believes to be Michael. Selene soon discovers her freedom did not come via Michael, but through a mysterious young girl named Eve (India Eisley). While in hiding with the other vampires, lycans have discovered the vampires lair and attack. During +7,#$C"++='6$D'='.'$-''+#$+7'$)2#+$ “super lycan”, who was created as a result of being injected with Eve’s blood. After the super lycan knocks out Selene, the lycans capture Eve.

Why do the lycans want Eve? M Well, she is actually a hybrid of a c (,55'2'.+$#82+6$".($C',.9$+7'$)2#+$85$ S her kind, is much coveted for her " unique DNA. Does Mr. Speedman feel he is “too good” to play a vamprie-werewolf hybrid? Who knows, but I am sure if he had returned, the role of

I was excited to travel to one of the only castles in America to investigate for signs of paranormal anomalies. The opportunity to photograph this amazing architectural marvel was icing on the cake.

To have the opportunity to examine the castle for proof of the paranormal was memorable.

The quote that you’ve just read is what Alfred Hitchcock told TV Guide upon the premiere of his television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents. This is a series that I’ve been a fan of since I was a kid - one of my top ten favorites - and the series responsible for introducing me to Alfred Hitchcock, who I’ve been a huge fan of since. I would see the show on Nick at Nite, I !80=($7"*'$C''.$"280.($)*'$!7'.$W$ )2#+$#"!$,+6$".($W$5'==$,.$=8*'$!,+7$+7'$ the odd, dry witted, fellow introducing the stories.

If you’ve never seen the series - and #'"#8.$8.'$,#$8.$N'+I,H6$#8$9'+$#."/ping - allow me to give you a brief summary of the show. It’s one of the great anthology series from America’s past (a format I’d like to see return to television), meaning that each week is a different story than the one before.

It’s essentially what it sounds like, Alfred Hitchcock introducing various macabre tales each week: a mix of humor, suspense, a touch of horror, and a good twist at the end.

The series really helped to propel Hitchcock’s public persona, and (02,.9$,+4#$)2#+$3'"2$8.$+7'$",2$,+$!"#$

the third most watch series of the 1955-1956 season. In total, it would air 582$SY$3'"2#6$STaa$+8$bZa6$!,+7$+7'$)."=$ three seasons expanded from half hour to a full hour - and a slight title change to The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.

Even as a kid I knew there was something about this Hitchcock fellow I liked. He’s now one of my absolute favorite directors, and I do think that dry humor he used on the #78!$7"($".$,.I0'.%'$8.$-':$W$7"*'$ fond memories of watching the show late Friday nights, and waiting to see how the story was going to end, and having the occasional episode give me a good spook. It’s something some friends have come to associate me with - Hitchcock. The ring tone on my phone is the theme to the series, the instrumental Funeral March for a Marionette:$>'%'.+=36$8.$"$C,2+7("36$"$52,'.($ send me a post card with a picture of Hitchcock inside. I’ve been in a bit of a Hitchcock mood lately, for my birthday this year I spent the whole day watching nothing but the recently released on R`R$)5+7$#'"#8.$85$+7'$#'2,'#:$@$988($ seven hours was spent doing nothing but that. I’ve even been listening to a OR$W$7"*'$85$-0#,%$528-$7,#$)=-#$,.$ the morning when I get ready - but I always skip the Selections from Psycho track if I’m about to get in the shower.

There’s several stand out episodes of the series, but one of my favorites is the fourth season episode, Banquo’s Chair, which happens to be one of 17 episodes of the series directed by Hitchcock himself.

The episode stars frequent Hitchcock Presents star John Williams, as a retired Scotland Yard detective trying to solve the one crime he never could.

The true identity of an older lady’s killer. The detective is convinced that the he victim’s Nephew is the killer,

and invites him to dinner at the home where the murder took place, two years to the day. Our detective has set the scene for a unique type of performance, where an actress will appear in sight only of the nephew—dressed as his dead aunt.

The actress appears, and the nephew looks confused - while the other two guests all claim they don’t see a thing - per the detective’s instructions. The nephew is slowly built up into a fright of hysterics at the ever /2'#'.%'$#,97+$85$7,#$('"($"0.+6$)."==3$ crying out “Go away or I’ll kill you "9",.d_$@#$+7'$/8=,%'$%"2+$7,-$8556$802$ detective thanks the actress who made it all possible—only to be told by her that she’s been running late, and only just arrived.

by Hitchcock. There’s a few stories that were featured on both programs as well. As I’ve said many times before, I’d love for a series like this to return to television, there was a revival series of Alfred Hitchcock Presents +7"+$",2'($,.$+7'$-,($b[Y#6$".($0#'($ colorized introductions from the original series. The newer series was more 7,+$".($-,##$+7".$+7'$)2#+$P$('#/,+'$ having a few episodes directed by Tim Burton, which were mostly remakes of stories from the original.

Including the hour long shows, there are 363 episodes of the series.

So do you. Digital media, in all its forms, is fragmentary. Even the longest stretches of text online are broken up with hyperlinks or other interactive elements (or even ads).”

He then adds that “This is neither a good nor bad thing, necessarily - it is simply a part of modern reading.”

Of course, the quintessential example of this is the Tweet, !7,%7$7"#$+"097+$0#$+8$%8.).'$802$ expressions to cute little 140-word fragments. Welcome to the world of sound bytes and snippets.

O0..,.97"-$(,#%0##'#$#8-'$ interesting literary works that are based on fragmentary reading and writing. One in particular, Reality Hunger: A Manifesto, by David Shields, is composed in large part of strings of quotations from various sources (another book, Masha Tupitsyn’s Laconia: 1,200 Tweets on Film, is just that - a collection of tweets that form a commentary on the movies).

Some call Shields’ book a “literary collage,” and refer to the fact that it has its origins in the world of music, borrowing its technique from audio mixing and sampling.

D7,'=(#$(').'#$7,#$-'+78($"#$V+7'$ art of reassembling fragments of preexisting images in such a way as to form a new image.” He believes this method is “the most important innovation in the art of the 20th century.” Although this assumption might be questionable, there is no doubt that fragmentary writing, reading, and perhaps even thinking are shaping the lives we lead in this new century.

I tend to agree, because there is no doubt we need moments of peace and quiet - some time to contemplate - amid the digital noise.

This concept of reading in fragmentary bursts is not en+,2'=3$.'!6$C'%"0#'$O0..,.97"-4#$ column made me think of one of my favorite authors, the 17th century haiku poet Basho. Haiku is a poetic form that reduces the world of experience into seventeen tidy syllables, grouped into three

my cat wonders why Haiku, as an early form of fragmentary writing, has a neat way of conveying content and emotion in a very compact space and because each line can be considered separate from the others, this art form can be conceived as an assembling of fragments.

Another form of fragmentary writing is known by several names, most commonly Flash Fiction, Sudden Fiction, Micro-Stories, and Short Short Stories. Popularized by New York Times Editor Steve Moss, this fragmented form reduces entire stores into a very

In many ways, I"#7$)%+,8.$/2'/"2'($0#$582$+7'$

new way of e-reading and writing that is now so commonplace and so expected.

My favorite form of fragmentary reading and writing is the very popular 40/$52,6$%#(20,'7 that are even smaller than Tweets and reduce a world of information into just six words. Examples like “Six years later, still wondering why,” and “Facebook has ruined my life entirely” are instructive, as is my very unimaginative, yet informative, little composition, “I love writing for The Loafer.” Needless to say, six word memoirs make wonderful classroom exercises and ice-breakers for meetings and gatherings.

A longer form of fragmentary writing is ideally represented by Mark Z. Danielewski’s phenomenally successful novel, House of Leaves,$!7,%7$)2#+$"//'"2'($,.$ 2000 and is currently enjoying a phenomenal burst of popularity.

This novel, which is presented as a collection of fragmentary sources memos, letters, memoirs, photographs, quotations, diary entries, and musical notation, is pretty massive, all 709 pages of it, and can hardly be described as a fragmentary piece of literature the way the aforementioned examples are, but ,#$(').,+'=3$"$!82&$/2'#'.+'($,.$ fragments. In his book, Cybertext, Espen J. Aarseth described such a work as “ergodic literature.” Pretty neat little term, don’t you agree?

What it refers to is a literary or artistic work that is truly multidimensional and not composed in the usual linear way. House of Leaves can best be described as a collection of sources rather than "#$"$0.,)'($."22"+,*'$P$"$&,.($85 Citizen Kane of literature (do you suppose we can describe Orson Welles’ masterpiece as “ergodic cinema”?).

This fragmentary way of think,.9$(8'#$#''-$+8$)+$!,+7$!7"+$ we’re experiencing these days. I propose inventing a new term like Fragmentary Ergotic Flash Fictional Haiku Stuff to describe it. I guess you’ve noticed that’s six words, haven’t you? Who knows? - maybe one day I will be adventurous enough to compose a Fragmentary Flash Haiku version of my column.

Should be interesting. And much quicker to read.
