Until the evening of Feb. 3, 2008, Tom Brady’s career had been pristine, featuring three Super Bowl titles, two Super Bowl MVP awards, not a smudge, scratch or bent corner. As it turned out, Burress underestimated his defense. The Giants’ thrilling postseason run culminated in a 17-14 victory over the Patriots that night in Glendale, Ariz., and Brady’s fortunes dipped. He missed all but two quarters of the 2008 season with a knee injury and despite winning the NFL’s MVP award in 2010, the second of his career, the once-assured Patriots struggled in the postseason. Entering the playoffs this season, they had lost three straight games dating back to that loss to the Giants. The Patriots’ passing attack has been historically good, but what part does the run play in the New England offense? The Giants ran for a league worst 89.2 yards per game during the regular season, worst in the NFL. The Patriots, though better, still ranked near the bottom of the league. Their 110.2 yards per game ranked No. 20 in the NFL. Nevertheless, their 18 rushing touchdowns were the thirdmost in the NFL. Is the Patriots’ defense mediocre or bad? The New England offense managed to score an average 32 points per game through the regular season, one reason the team won 13 times. The defense’s 21.4 point allowed per game was No. 15 in the league (better than the Giants’ 25 per). But when judging a defense by yards allowed per game, the Pats (411.1) drop to No. 31. The quote that you’ve just read is what Alfred Hitchcock told TV Guide upon the premiere of his television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents. It’s one of the great anthology series from America’s past (a format I’d like to see return to television), meaning that each week is a different story than the one before. It’s essentially what it sounds like, Alfred Hitchcock introducing various macabre tales each week: a mix of humor, suspense, a touch of horror, and a good twist at the end.
