JEANETTE HYDE, Director, moved to Duras in 2013 with her husband Richard, having had a career in management accountancy. Experienced in renovation, she established a very successful gite and B&B business, thanks to her knowledge of social media, and is well versed in French administration. A keen cook, she enjoys working with seasonal, regional produce and wines.

PAMELA LA FORGIA, Director, came to St Sernin in 2015 with her husband John.

Born in New York she spent most of her life working in advertising and web media in Minnesota before moving to Honolulu. Having made the move, as an American, to France she has a different understanding of the legal aspects of living here. As lovers of opera they are often found in Bordeaux and Toulouse.

LESLEY ASHBURNER, Managing Director, came to South West France in 2003 with her two children, her husband Peter and a hot air balloon. Having had her own PR and marketing agency in the UK for 30 years, she continued to work with major clients on PR and copywriting after the move. She has renovated two houses and her dream is to build her own home here in France.

Guests from the USA, UK and Canadian Embassies, families of American airmen, and veterans and standard bearers from America and Nouvelle Aquitaine will be present.

The RAF Association will also be standing side by side with their allies, and local Americans are invited to attend to honour their compatriots.

Held in many villages around 24 June, Midsummer Day, in honour of St John the Baptist, the Feu de la Saint Jean starts off with a communal meal and a giant bonfire in celebration of the return of “les beaux jours”. here are so many health benefits from choosing gardening as your hobby, not least being outdoors, meeting like minded people and enjoying the fruits of your labour. However, there is no such thing as a free lunch. If your aim is to be self sufficient in fruit, vegetables and cut flowers, then here starts your labour of love.

You have the time and the space to grow your own and there are no rules, well just a few tried and tested ideas.

THE PLOT

First of all the plot doesn’t need to be huge to give a reasonable range of produce. You can even start off small by growing a few plants in pots, section off a small area in the garden, or even plant vegetables in your flower beds. Herbs do really well in pots as well as a few “cut and come again” salad crops.

GETTING STARTED

This can be the biggest step but start small and aim big. There is no doubt that once you have caught the “veggie bug” you will crave more space to grow all your favourite crops. Be realistic though; how much time do you want to spend tending the plot, how much food do you really need?

I find raised beds to be ideal for growing vegetables because you can keep the crops rotated easily, weeding is less of a problem, and there is no need to dig. You just have to keep topping up with compost and the defined edge (we used stone) stops slugs invading your crops.

The beds are rested over the winter after a top up of compost and covered with either leaves or black plastic to suppress weeds.

This covering also keeps the soil warm ready for sowing in the spring.

We choose the crops we

really like to eat, especially tomatoes, peppers, chillies, leeks, garlic and a few herbs. We grow lots of different varieties of Tomatoes and freeze them for sauces and soups. The Noire de Crimée are our favourites for cooking and freezing. They crop well but need good support as, at the height of the season, they resemble small trees.

Raising your plants from seed can be very rewarding and if you can swap plants with friends it will give you a wider range of produce. One packet of seed may have far too many seeds for you, particularly if they all germinate, so be prepared with your pots and compost, ready to pot up the seedlings as soon as they are looking healthy.

They really do make perfect gifts for friends and neighbours. I usually say a small seedling with three leaves is ready for potting on.

Other jobs in May & June If a Potager is not your thing, here are a few ideas for the next few weeks.

SOFTWOOD CUTTINGS

These cuttings can be a bit of a challenge due to the softness of the young shoots but they do root very quickly if you follow these simple steps. I normally take cuttings from Salvia and Penstemon in June.

• Start in the morning.

• You will need a plastic bag, secateurs and some pots filled with compost.

• Look for side shoots and cut just below a leaf joint.

• Place them in the plastic bag.

• Nip out the tip of the cutting and reduce the remaining leaves by half to reduce wilting.

• Place the cuttings around the outside of the pot.

• Water and cover with a plastic bag.

• Place them on a window sill or in a greenhouse.

• Keep a check on these cuttings but they should root within a couple of weeks, ready to be potted on.

CONTAINER PLANTING

Traditionally, the 1st of May has been the day for planting containers in France, usually with Geraniums. For the last two years I have tried my hand at raising these from small plug plants.

There is no doubt that this is a very cost effective way of producing lots of plants but it is very time consuming.

So now I go to our local market to buy my Geraniums without the worry of growing them on.

pening the gates to hundreds of different gardens throughout the region, the Open Gardens/ Jardin Ouverts Association brings together gardeners and gardening enthusiasts by encouraging owners to open their gardens to the public.

Some might present formal structures and immaculate potagers, whilst others might be in the British cottage garden style or focus on water as the main theme.

Some incorporate ornamental grasses, tropical plants, drought tolerant plants, shrubs and trees, bonsai, potagers and fruit trees. Others feature immaculate lawns, walled herb gardens, kitchen gardens and organic plots.

The designs might include rose arches, refuge spots for birds and insects, ponds and even architectural relics found whilst digging.

All proceeds from the scheme are donated to charitable

organisations in France.

A Day Pass costs â‚Ź5 and allows you to visit as many gardens as you wish on the day of purchase, or an Annual membership is available for â‚Ź10.

Ideal for the development of ideas and an insight into different techniques, the scheme is now in its sixth year and is adding more and more gardens each year. A quick look at the online calendar also shows which gardens are open and when.

FINANCE Power of attorney arrangements allow an individual’s financial and health affairs to be looked after by someone else, the attorney, if they lose mental capacity in the future.

aking the UK as an example, several million “lasting” agreements have been registered since 2008, when they replaced “enduring” power of attorneys amid concerns that the rules were too easy to abuse.

This sharp rise in new agreements follows the Office for National Statistics revealing that dementia and Alzheimer’s accounted for almost one in eight deaths in 2015. That’s a total of 61,686 people, overtaking heart disease as Britain’s biggest killer. Sadly, the numbers are increasing.

Without power of attorney, friends and family would have to retrospectively prove why they should assume responsibility. This process incurs court fees and can take many weeks, leaving accounts locked until a decision is made.

As a British citizen in France you can choose either a UK “lasting power of attorney” (LPA) for Health and Welfare or Property and Financial, or a French “mandat de protection future” (MPF). The choice will depend on where you intend to live now and in the future, and where the main part of your

MORE DESTINATIONS

Ryanair announced the opening of a new base at Bordeaux on 3 April and has also added Bordeaux to Lamezia, Italy to its routes with two weekly flights from 28 May. This brings the total routes out of Bordeaux to 29 until, that is, October 2019 when another eight destinations will be added across Europe. Meanwhile, from Toulouse, Ryanair is offering nine more routes from September 2019. For its spring/summer programme, Bergerac has introduced flights to Lyon with Chalair Aviation, as well as Birmingham with Jet2.com and Jet2holidays.

BUFFER ZONES

You could be facing a €35 fine if your vehicle passes into new “buffer zones” placed two to five metres before pedestrian crossings. They are clearly marked by a thick, white, dashed line.

The decision about whether or not to introduce them rests with the local Mairie so be aware. If a pedestrian is waiting, preparing or crossing the road, you must now come to a complete stop before the zone.

Backpacking around Asia for a year, she took a cooking class in every country; what better way to understand a culture than learning about its food and cooking techniques. Today, she offers an authentic French cooking class and personal chef services in Bordeaux.

Vegetables give quiche a fresh taste

Eating outside is one of the great

joys of life here in France, as is the fabulous apéro tradition.

Garden Fresh Quiche 1 Shortcrust pastry (pâte brisée) 20g Butter 250g Fresh spinach 100g Peas (frozen or fresh) 10 Steamed green asparagus 2 Eggs 1 Yellow onion 20cl Heavy cream Salt and pepper Olive oil

METHOD: Preheat the oven to 180°C /350°F. Finely dice the onion and caramelize it in a hot pan, drizzled with olive oil, until translucent. Add the asparagus, cut into bite size pieces, and the peas. Cook for 5 min on medium high heat and deglaze with water if needed. Add the spinach and cook until reduced.

Roll out the dough, place in a greased pie dish and prick with a fork, sprinkle with thin butter slices.

Beat the eggs and cream in a bowl, add salt and pepper to taste. Spread the vegetable mix evenly over the pie crust and pour the cream mixture on top. Bake for 30 to 40 mins until the crust is golden brown.

Roasted Lamb Roulade with Mint Pesto & Roasted Potatoes 1kg Butterflied leg of lamb 400g Potatoes 50g Mint pesto Olive oil, salt and pepper

FOR THE MARINADE: 125ml Pomegranate juice 125ml Low sodium soy sauce 30ml Nut oil 20ml Apricot jam 2 Cloves of garlic 2cm Minced ginger 1tbs Honey FOR THE MINT PESTO 15g Fresh mint 1 Clove of garlic 2tbs Pine nuts 50ml Olive oil 1/4tsp Salt 1/4tsp Pepper METHOD: Mix all marinade ingredients and coat the lamb with it, leave overnight. Blend or chop the pesto ingredients into a creamy consistency.

Dry the meat with a paper towel, lay the lamb flat, fat side down, and spread with the pesto. Roll the meat and secure with butchers twine.

Coat the potatoes with olive

oil, salt and pepper and place in an ovenproof dish to surround the lamb. Bake for 40 mins at 160°C/320°F. Remove the lamb from the dish and leave to cool for 10 min before slicing. Serve with mint leaves on top.

Apricot Clafoutis

500g Fresh apricots rinsed and cut in half 50g Melted butter 4 Eggs 25cl Milk 100g Flour 125g Sugar Salt 1 Pack vanilla sugar METHOD: Preheat the oven to 180°C/ 350°F. In a bowl, mix the eggs, sugar and a pinch of salt until a creamy color, slowly mix in the flour. Mix in the melted butter and milk to form a smooth, creamy batter.

Grease an ovenproof dish with butter, place the apricots in the dish and pour the batter on top. Bake for 35 min then sprinkle vanilla sugar on top and bake again for 10min. https://mayanacookingclass. webnode.fr/

Cocktails & Apéros A former UK Sommelier of the Year and winner of the Mondavi award for the best wine list in the world, John Gilchrist has been in the hospitality industry for 30 years and now runs a gîte and cookery school in SW France with his wife and chef, Emma.

He writes: “There aren’t many things better than sitting in the sun with some good food, great friends and a drink or two. We entertain a lot whether it’s Apéro with friends, with our holidaying guests or during our cookery school, always beginning with fizz or wine cocktails.

For a bit of fun we often let our guests make their own “Kir Royals” by filling a large bucket with ice and bottles of white Crémant de Bordeaux, and letting them choose from different flavoured syrups or crèmes.

Other cocktails which are good on a hot day are wine fizzes or spritz. For a Rosé Spritz fill a large jug with ice, pour in a bottle of local rosé, add sparkling water or lemonade to taste and garnish with lots of lemon slices and sprigs of rosemary.

I also love the very refreshing and quaffable Passion

fruit Aperol spritz. Here’s my version: A large jug filled with ice and local rosé, 75ml Passoã, 75ml Aperol, 100ml Passion fruit juice and a bottle of sparkling water.

For a “grown up Champagne cocktail” my go to drink is the citrusy, fizzy wine and gin classic cocktail, French 75.

In frozen Champagne glasses, add a splash (10ml) of lemon juice and the same of gin and sugar syrup (syrup de canne from most supermarkets) topped up with sparkling wine and garnished with a thin strip of lemon peel. This does pack a bit of a punch but is a great drink that really gets your appetite going.

WHY DURAS?

Bonhomme Richard engages the Serapis

THE DUKE OF DURAS Built in 1765 at Lorient in France, the magnificent Duke of Duras merchant ship was named after the Marshall of France who had conquered the Franche-Comté and Alsace under Louis XIV. Sailing under the French East India Company, with voyages between Lorient and the Far East, she returned to France to find that the company had been dissolved and its installations and ships were now part of the French Navy. As a French naval ship she travelled to Isle de France, isle Bourbon, St Domingue and was then sold to private ship owners.

Easy conversion to a warship made her very attractive to some and, in 1779 she was acquired by Louis XVI and placed under the command of John Paul who needed a frigate capable of attacking the English during the American revolution.

Five months later she was a 42-gun warship and renamed Bonhomme Richard after John Paul’s good friend, Benjamin Franklin.

The initial plan was to attack England by sea, debarking troops at Liverpool. However, a collision with the American ship, Alliance, forced her to return for repairs. She left five weeks later as part of an American convoy of six, this time sailing into the North Sea and then down the east coast of Britain. The fierce Battle of Flamborough Head in 1779, saw her engaging with the British fleet with John Paul refusing to surrender to the captain of the Serapis with the words “I have not yet begun to fight”. The battle continued until the British were vanquished and the Americans took possession of the Serapis.

Sadly, Le Bonhomme Richard was severely damaged and sunk after two days.

As “father of the US Navy” which still uses the names of Jones and Bonhomme Richard, John Paul was a hero of the American Revolution.

France honoured him with the title “Chevalier” and awarded a gold medal for his valour and brilliant services. He also received a decoration of l’Institution du Mérite Militaire and a sword from Louis XVI.

• Today, several people from Lot et Garonne and, specifically, from Duras are working with Lorient Agglomération to build a full-size replica of this historic vessel in the same way that l’Hermione de Lafayette was rebuilt at Rochefort.

François Aubertin, former Mayor of Guidel near Lorient, and former vice president de Lorient Agglomération, explains “Starting from the premise that people want to reconnect with their past, the idea is to rebuild this historic vessel. It is obviously an ambitious and long-term undertaking and we are delighted that winegrowers in the Duras region are very much involved in the project.

The conditions at Lorient still lend themselves to the project.

The historic, unused site of the original East India Company still has a dry dock and period buildings, all of which are ideal. Thanks to Christian Plouzeau, and after 3,000 hours of painstaking work over nine months, we now have a 1/48th model here at Guidel which will be used to support the real-size reconstruction project.”

Fabrice Pauvert is one of the Duras winemakers who is involved. He comments, “I stumbled across the locally unknown history of the Duc de Duras ship and its incredible destiny as Bonhomme Richard at the end of 2016. Even if the reconstruction seems impossible or a little crazy it is, nonetheless, feasible as shown by the relatively recent 17-year rebuild of the Marquis de Lafayette’s ship in Rochefort.

“By recreating the Duke of Duras we are highlighting Duras and Lot et Garonne, its artisanal and agricultural produce, its heritage, and the history of the French East India company and the connection to Lorient from the days of the American Revolution, etc. The wine growers of Duras support the project, as do the departments of the Lot and Garonne and Morbihan, the Lot et Garonne chamber of agriculture, a former minister and a crowd funding site, etc.

Bottles of Bonhomme Richard and John Paul Jones wine were first produced in 2017 to help encourage interest, and L’Association Les Amis du Navire Duc de Duras Bonhomme Richard (Friends of the Ship association) was created on 11 February, 2019 in Brittany.

A visit to MONTIGNAC in Dordogne will reveal houses built on stilts in narrow, medieval streets, as well as the remains of a Middle Age fortress. With a religious heritage, including convents and a priory, and sitting on the edge of the Vézère river, it is also home to the fabulous Lascaux Cave and the International Centre for Cave Art. Visitors can see a complete replica of the original cave, tracing its discovery and displaying the famous animal cave drawings. Nearby, drop in at the sinkhole of Le Regourdou, visit a living bear park and museum and discover Neanderthal man.

Believed to be one of the most remarkable in Gers, the Roman Pile (a monument usually relating to a funeral) at SAINT-LARY has been very well preserved and, considering its age, is still pretty much intact. At over 10m tall with its columns and mosaic decorative detail, this National Historic Monument sits on a hill in a wood not far from the town. teau, the ruined windmill and a distinctly round pigeonnier.

A walk along the coastal path at LANTON in Gironde will give you a breathtaking view of the Arcachon Basin. The Fontainevielle Taussat, the Old Port of Taussat and the port of Cassy punctuate the seafront path with its pretty beaches and picturesque boat moarings. Stop off at the 12th-century Church of Our Lady of Lanton, one of the oldest in the Basin, and why not take in the Gardarem Ecomuseum with 600 objects depicting Gascon trade heritage.

Surrounded by hills, the ex-mining village of SAINT-PERDOUX in Lot was once a place where the monks of Figeac were sent to do penance. Today, the narrow streets are lined with flower strewn medieval houses and boast the delightful 11th and 12th-century Church of St Pardulphe. Unusual with its semi-circular apse and Byzantine style structures, the church was dedicated to two saints, Pardulphe and Saint Roch, whose statue and shrine

can be found inside.

Only the north wing of the 14/16th-century château at NERAC remains following a fire in 1610 which destroyed much of the archives from the days when it was occupied by Henry IV. Today, this elegant, Louis XII styled monument in Lot et Garonne houses a museum of local archaeology and an exhibition dedicated to the Albret family. Nérac itself features a Gothic bridge and a promenade lined with trees, as well as picturesque half-timbered medieval buildings and is a perfect spot for

lunch by the river.

Although small, MONTRICOUX in Tarn et Garonne is full of 15th and 16th-century mud brick or wattle-and-daub timber-framed houses. Once the chapel to a Templar command post, the 13th/16th-century Church of St Pierre has striking architectural features including a tau-cross, a tall octagonal brick belfry, pentagonal apse, a 12th-century statue of Saint Peter, and the Annunciation, a mural by Marcel Lenoir. As well as a museum dedicated to Lenoir, take a look at the 12th-centu-

ry Templar salle de garde.

Lying at 51km south east of Toulouse in Haute Garonne, the arcaded centre in the 14th-century Bastide town of REVEL is famed for its impressive market hall and market history going back over 600 years. Ancient measuring containers and carpentry can be found on this stone building which now incorporates the tourist office. A must-see is the neo-Roman Church of Notre Dame which was rebuilt at the end of the 19th-century and is inset with statues of Christ and the 12 Apostles.

Music to nurture the Soul

oday there are more opportunities to experience music of all genres than ever before, especially live music.

With bars, restaurants, châteaux and traditional venues offering musical entertainment, there is a veritable array of noteworthy musicians and musical events coming up throughout the region.

So whether you usually prefer to tinkle the ivories or blow your own trumpet, why not try something outside “your norm”?

Who knows you may soon be singing to a different tune!

Open mic

If you can sing or play an instrument, or just love the whole music scene,

these events certainly hit the high note when it comes to improvisation.

Basically, they represent the ultimate jam session with individual musicians coming together over a beat and “cranking out a tune”, or singers accompanied by musicians they have never met before.

It is always an experience and an ideal place to see quality musicians in a relaxed atmosphere.

Accordion

Conjuring up images of tame waltzes or fiery tangos, the accordion has taken on a new persona with musicians like Mikaël Vigneau. Star of radio, film and TV, and a world championship accordionist, his inventive style in-

corporates rap, pop, rock and, of course, traditional French chansons. Other accordion players are following suit so, if you thought accordion music wasn’t for you, you might want to think again. Of course, if it’s traditional that you want, there are many events offering that too.

Jazz

Jazz, in all its forms, is prevalent throughout our region with events like Jazz in Marciac and the Jazz festival at Monsegur.

However, there is one particular style that is becoming more popular.

Matt Guez, who formed Swinguez band on arrival in France in 2015 explains, “The name of Django

If you think of French music what springs to mind? The accordion, café, Charles Aznavour and Edith Piaf? Or perhaps Troubadours, Baroque or Bizet?

Reinhardt is instantly recognised amongst the European Travelling people (Roma, Tziganes, Gens de Voyages, or Gypsies).

An incredible guitarist, more so for overcoming severe burns to his left hand, Django formed the Hot Club of France quintet with violinist Stéphane Grapelli. Django’s guitar fused Gypsy and European harmonies together with American jazz, and this, combined with endless compositions, 750-800 recordings, constant live performances and an amazing life story, are what inspire many musicians to this day.” Matt’s band is one of the many that creates their music in the wake of Django.

Watch out for Tzigane and Gypsy Swing, it will be sure to entertain you.

Classical

As well as the fantastic concerts held in churches, theatres and châteaux, there are many professional musicians who have moved to France, having

played with prestigious orchestras around the world. In addition, more and more attention is turning to musical tuition.

In fact, Dordogne is welcoming world-renowned classical musicians this summer during the inaugural week of the Issigeac International Music Academy (IIMA). The celebrated Tippett Quartet will perform two concerts, with a third by highly-acclaimed international violinist Ishani Bhoola.

There will also be a course for amateur string players with individual tuition and chamber music coaching from the Tippett Quartet.

Well it used to be straightforward pop and rock, now it’s all-encompassing to include ska, rap,

garage, soul, R&B, punk, grunge, house, reggae, electro, techno, trance, hip-hop and, amongst others, post-disco. For ska imagine R&B, add some jazz, a bit of hip-hop, Jamaican and reggae vibes, and some serious attitude, and you have a cool mix of notes that fits any dance style. Garage is recognized for being soulful and deep with a huge emphasis on the repetitive 4:4 time and additional “unusual” vocals bringing a chilled sound to the dance floor. Far from putting you into one, trance music is often frantic with a “banging” base, a frenetic structure and a thought provoking voice over. For hip-hop think Eminem, Drake and 50 Cent, it’s where you “get down”, soak in the urban vibes and throw some shapes.

The 21st of June is the day of the Fête de la Musique when amateur and professional musicians alike will be performing at free festivals in villages, towns and cities everywhere. Established by the French Minister of Culture in 1982, this is now a worldwide event, encouraging all types of musicians to “faites de la musique” (make music) in the streets as well as at organised events. Look out for posters for local events and jam sessions.

Country

Whether its blue grass, blues, Cajun fiddle, cowboy, hillbilly or the more classic variety, there is no doubt that country is widespread (no pun intended). With a host of country clubs in the region, the music incorporates banjo, bass, drums, guitars and, of course, the fiddle.

Musicians such as Martha Fields bring a combination of blues, folk, bluegrass and hillbilly to the fore, whilst others such as The Rip Roaring Success concentrate on guitar, double bass and a smokin’ fiddle for a stripped-down The Dinosaur Truckers and Dad Horse Experience (above).

Western-style reminiscent of swing. Saving Country Music recently awarded a “two gun up” review to The Dinosaur Truckers, a new-school bluegrass group that infuse a bit of punk into their tempo.

Then there is the one man, banjo-playing Dad Horse Experience who accompanies himself on the bass organ with his feet, often playing the kazoo at the same time.

OBTAINING HELP There are times when being ill or having friends and family who are ill can become too much to bear. Jenny P With all this wine and French bread I am piling on the pounds, mostly because I sit at home all day. I can’t face going to a gym or exercise class on my own. I fear that depression may be setting in and the eating is getting out of control?

A

Hello Jenny From your question it is apparent that you are aware that lack of exercise is exacerbating the low feelings you are experiencing.

In order to remotivate yourself, and to avoid getting overwhelmed, start off with just a simple 10 minute stroll each morning. Try to stick to the same sort of time every morning and tell yourself, it’s only 10 min-

utes, I can do this. Then focus on what you can see, hear, smell and touch; if your mind wanders to those things causing you distress, bring your focus back in again. If that’s too much to start off with, some simple stretching exercises can trigger endorphins which will naturally give you a boost. Once the endorphins start popping perhaps make a plan with a friend, this will also make you feel less isolated - maybe that’s partially what might be going on here? Planning ahead will give you a goal, even if you see a glimpse of increased energy and motivation that, in itself, will help.

Adrian D My self-esteem has plummeted following an accident that has left me unable to work. I feel useless, old and finished. How can I raise myself up?

A

Dear Adrian Ah yes, the “compare and despair” cycle! How your life used to be vs how your life is now. This can be a real rabbit hole and it is the comparisons that lead to negative self-talk, which increase your anxiety and stress. Now’s the time to rethink what you want from your life in this new chapter because that, truly, is what it is. Make a list of what your strengths are and those things you enjoy doing which give you a buzz. Assess each one for the level of confidence they engender. What do you have time to do now that previously you didn’t? Your self-worth was, presumably, fairly strongly linked to the sense of purpose and achievement you gained from your work. So now’s

the time to develop a new schedule: when you are used to planning your entire day around your job, it can be very disconcerting to go from that straight into having a totally unstructured day. It is that that needs a complete rethink and restructure. The more someone does something in their life that they can be proud of, the easier it is for them to recognise their self-worth. Find a new sense of purpose. Maybe you can do volunteer work related to your former career? Or maybe you’ve always cared deeply about a particular cause? Finding a new way to provide meaning for your life will restore the sense of purpose that you once found through work. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn to play a musical instrument or to travel more, even if only day trips? Now is the perfect time. You have the freedom. Go for it!

Tennis for everyone With so many tennis courts and clubs in towns and villages there’s no excuse not to practice, the first rule of the game.

Membership at a local club, where play is mostly on a clay court (terre battue) combines both physical and social aspects, and visitors can usually have temporary membership for a nominal fee.

The right racket length is about 66 or 69cm for an adult. For the grip size measure from the tip of your ring finger to the first lateral crease on your palm. It really is best to wear proper tennis shoes which can withstand repetitive sideways movements and support your feet and ankles.

If you are new to the game, you might prefer a slower beginners tennis ball, giving you more time to concentrate on your swing, and more chance of hitting it back. Another good idea is for one person to toss 30 balls or so over the net whilst the other hits them back.

Private lessons are often the quickest way to learn how to play tennis and avoid bad habits. Once you have grasped the basics, practice with a ball machine is a great way to improve specific techniques.

If you want to join a tournament, your “classement”, or your level of ability (ranking), will dictate your entry point. In theory, a beginner can win a championship but, practically speaking, beginners play first, being joined by more experienced players as the tournament progresses.

Watching Wimbledon and the French Open will give you inspiration and encouragement too so sit back and enjoy while you can!

Knowyour yourboules boules Know We see it being played everywhere by young children with their coloured balls, right through to the older generation with their tried and tested steel boules. Pétanque, often referred to as Boules, can be played virtually anywhere on grass, gravel and other hard ground areas.

Not all boules are the same, and we are not just talking about the patterns of the grooves (stries) which provide easy identification. A boule can weigh between 650 to 800 grams and be 75 to 80mm in diameter. Why the difference? Women and young people may prefer to play with smaller versions for sure but there are other reasons to choose your boules carefully.

A player who is good at placing their boule will often prefer a small, heavy model which is more difficult to move when hit and, because it is smaller, presents less of a target to the opposition.

The opponent, who is trying to knock a boule out of the game, will often choose a lighter boule. The lighter it is, the quicker it will lose momentum and stop.

However, lighter does not mean smaller.

The idea is to knock the other ball out and it is here that size really does matter.

That extra 5mm could make the difference between a hit or a miss.

Top tips on putting Here are some great tips from John Cook, a renowned PGA golf coach and international player, about how to perfect your golf and putt the ball, in the hole, more often.

• The first thing is to remain relaxed.

Standing over the putt for too long will make you tense. It’s best to decide on the line, address the ball, look at the hole twice and then putt. Don’t forget that the more you look at the hole, the more negative your thoughts will be.

• Whilst practicing on the putting green, place four balls around the hole at a distance of two feet. When you have holed all four in a row, place them at three feet

away, then four feet and so on. Record the best length and try to beat that next time, always starting from two feet.

• If at home, place a coin on the carpet as a marker for where to putt from.

Place another ball on the carpet about three feet away. Putt the first ball to strike the second, which will obviously move further away. Place the first ball back on the coin and strike the second ball again.

• Stick a tee into the practice putting green and then practice putting to it.

When you go onto the course, the hole will look like the size of a bucket!

You can do this on the carpet at home by turning the tee upside down.

Walking the Camino de Santiago, the Way of Saint James

We asked two pilgrims to tell us more about their Camino walks.

CATHERINE FINCH

Catherine walked the Camino in stages with a friend between April 2015 and March 2019, taking two walks a year in spring and autumn.

She tells us “We started in Castanet and, in all, walked for 45 days but you can do it in 30 if you take the trail from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela.”

Camaraderie is a major part of the walk and the pair met some interesting people, including a young Chinese girl carrying a ukulele; they ended up singing together.

As well as incredible scenery there was tremendous friendship and hospitality from both French and Spanish along the route.

As Catherine says, “When you’re weary, a friendly face, cold drinks, fruit (often free) is a real boost.”

Their most unusual lodgings proved to be a disused church, Chapelle des Ursulines in Aire sur L’Adour, where they slept in the vestry and ate on a

long table in the church itself.

Her advice is “Have a completely open mind. Don’t expect anything, accept that it will be tough, exhilarating, frustrating and incredible, all in one day. Stay in all the accommodation on offer, and don’t be afraid to treat yourself every so often!”

COLLEEN SIMS

Driving across Spain in 2013, Colleen Sims noticed Camino pilgrims.

She says “At a little beach near Finisterre my hand rested on a beautiful scallop shell. It was a sign, I was going to walk! Having recovered from cancer it felt like a calling, a declaration that I was alive and healthy and strong”.

Colleen’s many walks have covered 200 to 800km, and the longest which was 1007km on the Via de la Plata from Seville.

She plans a 1600km walk in 2020. “I

started my first walk alone”, she adds, “but you’re never really alone on the Camino.

I’ve met so many amazing people, including a French group who were carrying four wheelchair bound pilgrims for 800km, even over mountains! I now have special friendships with pilgrims across the globe.

“In 2016, whilst fund-raising on my Via de la Plata walk I carried ‘sins’ like mediaeval pilgrims walking by proxy to St James. I carried hopes, dreams and fears. At journey’s end, in the cathedral at Santiago de Compostella, a nun sat beside me, saying nothing as I read the messages to myself in front of the Saint. It was heart breaking, because for some of my sponsors a miracle was too late.

“It feels like everything is possible on the Camino. There were times when things just happened, spiritual moments that made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Often, the simple beauty of finding space to breathe and think helps to clarify what’s important in life.

CREATING GLOBAL CITIZENS: why is a bilingual education important ?

Changes and upheaval in recent years mean that developing understanding and tolerance is more vital than ever. How can we prepare today’s children for what is to come, and give them the best chance to live a good life in the world of tomorrow?

Human beings are biologically, physiologically and emotionally evolved to be social, community-based creatures. The health benefits of bilingualism are supported by numerous scientific studies: it promotes everything from mental agility to the delaying or even avoidance of Alzheimer’s!

THE NEED TO CONNECT In our world of social media and digital lives, loneliness and disconnection from the local community have become as damaging to one’s health as obesity or smoking.

“Real” human social connectedness builds trust, cooperation and a sense of belonging.

It limits anxiety, depression, stress, and antisocial behaviour. Bilingualism facilitates this connectedness, and is a clear way of rediscovering the sense of community that we

are in danger of losing.

Language is much more than just a way to communicate: it teaches culture, behaviour, ways of thinking, tolerance, and tradition. Bilingualism is an important bridge to international communication and understanding. Learning another language and living alongside members of different cultures develops a more informed perspective on historical and contemporary topics, the capacity for conflict resolution, and promotes active listening.

A GLOBAL OUTLOOK Global mindedness can be defined as “a view of the world in which people see themselves connected to the global community and assume a sense of responsibility to its members”. To achieve this it must be lived in the ethos, values and daily life of a school. Teachers from various cultures and languages are extremely important, as is a regular review of the curriculum in order to meet the needs of an evolving student body.

can foster a desire to leave the world better than they found it. Students need more than ‘token travel’. Genuine engagement with different communities follows ‘lived experiences’. How can we aid the formation of identity? It is problematic to rely on notions of “we are all the same”. Embracing difference encourages pupils to reflect upon their relationships, and what language, culture and nationality means for their identity and its intersectionality with the global community.

As enriching as the international community can be, and as many advantages as it can bring, the concept of “third culture children” requires

attention. Families in transition can suffer from “transition fatigue”, and need support integrating into their new society. This can be daunting for children and teenagers already dealing with issues of identity, development and belonging. A tongue-in-cheek look at...

May and June mean public holidays, flower filled tubs and gnat bites, as well as a concerted effort to prep for the outdoor life that’s about to begin.

I

s “spring cleaning” bred in us I wonder? Suddenly I have this intense and, believe me, unusual desire to fill in and paint over every odd crack in the very old walls of my house, scour the BBQ and, now that the birds have flown, remove the bird nest from the pizza oven.

I am always filled with excitement about the idea of entertaining family and friends into the wee small hours, sitting outside as the birds go to bed, the owls wake up, and the fight with the midges begins. I won the battle last year, a fearsome combination of lemon scented wax candles, oil filled flame torches, a tennis racquet-shaped zapper, those curled up snake type things and anti-mozzie spray had them beat. I am such a “sweet” thing that I was once

bitten 23 times on one leg so I now take anti-histamine from June to August. Hmm, maybe I was bitten after all but just didn’t notice? I’ll still count it as a victory, I wasn’t awake all night, dabbing myself with vinegar!

May is, of course, the month of les jours des fériérs and les jours des ponts. What should be a single day suddenly becomes three days of festive fun, with shops closing early, or not opening at all, and the local boulangerie running out of bread by 11 am. We take to the supermarket shelves as if war might break out, and to the garden centres as if that last pot of herbs for the pizza topping is a matter of life or death. I guess if we were to use the wrong plant it could well be!

It’s also the time of the gera-

nium, a plant beloved by the French for its pretty flowers and its citrus-smelling leaves.

You won’t believe this but I totally avoided this plant for years as not only did I find the aroma off-putting (says she with a garden full of lemony mozzie killers) but I only ever seemed to find it in red and red is just not in my colour scheme. I have no idea why I was so fussy – the colours in my garden usually turn to brown pretty quickly anyway!

However, I found shocking pink ones last year and am a total convert. They’ve gone on forever with very little attention other than a bit of dead-heading and a daily drink. Some are even alive 12 months later, it’s a miracle!

Why am I so delighted? I used to have a greenhouse but I only ever grew dead things and

weird shaped tomatoes which went berserk and took the whole place over. It was like The Day of the Triffids, that post-apocalyptic film from the 1960’s, gone seriously bad.

One of France’s other loves, and mine, is roses. I filled a bed with white hybrids for €2 each from a local flower festival years ago and they are still going strong, despite my “care”. I have just found out that geraniums and roses share chemistry, at least where perfumes are concerned. It seems they both have the same floral mid-notes of linalool, geraniol and citronellol.

Rose is a sweeter, more feminine aroma whilst geranium, with its citrus, spicy, aromatic undertones, is favoured in cologne for men. Who knew?

I guess my nose did!
