STUFF TO READ

Letter from the Publisher

My momma always said, “If you’re gonna go, go whole-hog.”

Well, this summer has definitely done just that.

“Whole-hog” also known as “the most.” “Bold” is another word that comes to mind as I sit here and think about the month of August, and it’s definitely the word that comes to mind when I think about this heat.

It’s also the best way to describe us Southerners. We brave this humidity every year and make it look easy. With bold dresses and sunbathing rituals, outdoor yoga, openair markets and warm summer nights filled with friends, somehow we make walking out of a cold air-conditioned building into a hot summer scorcher feel like whatever.

Bold is the colors of the flowers and the dragonflies.

Bold is what I think of when I think of this month’s features. From the bold art and life of local artist Amanda Weldon, to the work of Boyz 2 Men founder, Shawna Love, who boldly takes on the task of enriching the lives of our young men. From the bold sound of local musical group The Velvet Cab to the bold eclecticness of local artist, writer, dancer, smile-generator and overall talent of EMusical (aka our friend, Sherman Williams).

Bold is how I hope you take on the day.

It’s also how I want you to look at our calendar of events, because anyone who created an event in the month of August is, you guessed it – Bold.

In a world that can often reward conformity, being bold and daring can be a refreshing and empowering choice. Stepping outside of our comfort zones, taking calculated risks, embracing innovation, and overcoming fear can lead to profound personal growth and remarkable achievements.

Boldness has a contagious effect, so let us strive to embrace the power of the season, let boldness unlock our true potential, and truly make a lasting impact on both ourselves and those around us.

Just remember to wear a sunblock you really like, remind people that the intersections downtown are regular intersections and you don’t have to sit in the middle of them for the light to turn green, and as always this time of year, drink lots of water.

#BoldAugust

home, a monitored smoke detector is a worthy investment. This smart device can automatically alert the fire department if a fire starts while you are away, ensuring a rapid response to the emergency.

In the event of a fire, every second counts. Therefore, it is vital to have a well-thought-out plan in place, designating specific roles for each family member. One family member should be assigned the responsibility of gathering and securing

the pets, while others focus on evacuating the premises and contacting emergency services. Understanding your pet’s hideaway spots is essential, as they are likely to retreat there during moments of chaos and stress. Knowing these places in advance can facilitate a quicker rescue.

Preparing a pet-specific emergency kit is another critical aspect of fire safety planning. This kit should include a leash, an accurately labeled carrier, and some treats near the exits. However, it is essential to ensure that these items do not obstruct the escape path. Regularly practicing fire drills with your entire family, including your pets, is an excellent way to familiarize them with the escape plan. These drills will help you identify any potential issues and refine the process for a more efficient and smooth evacuation.

Apart from the immediate fire safety measures, there are some fundamental precautions that every pet owner should take. Ensuring that your pets wear collars with proper identification at all times can significantly increase the chances of being reunited in case of separation during an emergency.

Pets hold a cherished place in our lives, bringing immeasurable joy, love, and companionship. As valued members of our household, it is our responsibility to ensure their safety and wellbeing at all times. However, one area that often goes overlooked is pet safety. Just as we take precautions to safeguard our homes and loved ones from the threat of fire, it is equally important to extend this care to our furry friends. Fires can happen in any month. In this article we will explore essential tips and strategies to protect our adorable four-legged companions, because when it comes to fire safety, our pets are family too.

It is a startling fact that approximately 700 house fires each year are actually started by pets. As responsible pet owners, it is our duty to ensure their safety and well-being in all aspects of life, including the possibility of a fire emergency. By taking proactive measures and planning ahead, we can eliminate potential risks, enhance their chances of survival, and provide ourselves with peace of mind.

One of the most crucial steps in pet fire safety is identifying and eliminating common risks within our homes. Some primary culprits include fireplaces, candles, space heaters, stovetops, electrical cords, and glass water bowls on wooden decks. To prevent accidents, it is essential to extinguish all embers and open flames, turn off space heaters when not in use, use child safety knobs on stoves to prevent pets from accidentally turning

However, collars can be lost, which is why microchipping your pets is a wise decision. A microchip, a tiny device implanted under their skin, contains essential information about the pet and its owner, helping shelters and veterinarians to identify and contact the owner.

them on, secure electrical cords to minimize the risk of chewing, and refrain from using glass bowls outside, as they can magnify sunlight and ignite a fire.

Equally important is the installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the house. Multiple detectors should be strategically placed to cover all areas, and the batteries should be changed at least twice a year to ensure they are functioning correctly. As pet owners, it is our responsibility to protect our fourlegged family members from all potential dangers, including the risk of house fires. By being proactive and prepared, we can reduce the chances of a fire occurring and increase the likelihood of a successful evacuation if the worst does happen. Eliminating fire hazards, installing smoke detectors, creating a well-practiced escape plan, and ensuring proper identification are all integral parts of pet fire safety. Let us commit to safeguarding our pets, who bring us joy, companionship, and unconditional love, by taking these essential steps to ensure their safety and well-being in any situation.

Guest Lecture: Jim Day

Author and history professor Jim Day presents “Wilson’s Raid Through Alabama and Georgia, Spring 1865”. In the wake of the Confederate Army of Tennessee’s disastrous campaign in Tennessee in late 1864, Union Major General James Harrison Wilson launched a cavalry campaign of destruction and liberation. Continuing the advance into Georgia, Wilson’s cavalry defeated Confederate forces at Columbus and LaGrange before culminating the operation in Macon. Later, Wilson’s patrols captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis near Irwinville. Constituting the largest and most successful cavalry campaign of the Civil War. However, the assassination of President Lincoln overshadowed these military achievements, and Wilson’s “liberation” of these Deep South states often goes unheralded or unnoticed. Jim Day is Professor of History at the University of Montevallo. He holds a B.S. in engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point, an M.A. in history from the University of Georgia, and a Ph.D. in history from Auburn University. Since retiring from the Army in 1995, Jim has taught history at Marion Military Institute, Judson College, Auburn University Montgomery, and the University of Montevallo. He also has developed Staff Ride/Terrain Walk courses on the Civil War battles of Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Franklin. His Lecture is Free and open to the public. Thursday, August 24, 7 p.m. , National Civil War Naval Museum, 1002 Victory Drive, Columbus

SHERMAN WILLIAMS Covering The Earth In EMusical

Life is a winding path of self-discovery, and local artist Sherman Williams has found a way to laugh at and learn from it while sharing his spark and talents with the world.

forward, he says he just kept on doing it.

Fast forward to South Korea, and Sherman found himself drawn to a crowd that shared his passion, break dancing is a language that needs

We sat in a local coffee shop sipping our iced teas. Still sweating from the Georgia summer heat, I ask him to tell me his story - “How did you get here?”

He starts with his time spent in the Air Force. Sherman explains that the military has a way of “making you realize what you want to do.” Traveling has always been intriguing to Sherman. While spending some time in South Korea, Sherman found a group of hip hop performers that made him feel at home. He had fallen in love with the art of hip hop in middle school.

“This one’s funny,” he laughs. A self-

no common words. “The world of hip hop is so universal,” Sherman says. Sherman had the opportunity to attend a world breakdancing competition there, the R16, which was an experience he says he’ll never forget.

After returning to the states, Sherman moved back to Georgia and, without a studio to practice dancing in, decided to dance in front of Barnes and Noble. Some people saw his moves and admired his skill, and referred him to a local studio that was looking for a teacher. Six years later, he’s still teaching hip hop at Company C Academy of Dance in Columbus.

His travels around the world have given him a diverse background, and Sherman explains that he’s been able to accumulate a lot of different methodologies and techniques, all contributing to his style and expression.

Sherman describes himself as a performer, and dance isn’t his only act. Music has been a part of

proclaimed nerd, (because I can’t see it) Sherman tells me he has a background in a type of martial art/dance called Capoeira. This Afro-Brazilian cultural tradition is both a fight and a dance, and Sherman spent time in his early life learning the practice. “It looks exactly like break dancing,” he explains. In middle school he saw some guys doing what he thought was “a really bad version of Capoeira.” Sherman went over to correct the guys, who watched his moves and said, “What are you doing?” Sherman told them that he was doing Capoeira and asked what they were doing. They were break dancing, and when he asked, “What’s that?,” the guys took him in. Sherman was intrigued from the start and, from that day

Sherman’s life even longer than dance. “I grew up playing violin and guitar,” Sherman explains. He performed often in church and also sang in choirs. Trained classically in violin, Sherman enjoys exploring different genres with his instruments. He experiments by playing jazz and even metal on his violin. Sherman took inspiration from the

way his first music teacher, David Hinson, could push him out of his comfort zone and into the place where he truly embraced his creative talents. “There is no true limitation to genre when it comes to instruments,” Sherman says “You just have to know the theory of the genre.”

Sherman went on to attend Full Sail University, where he got his associates in game design. His plan was to

to grow and expand his knowledge as a musician.

Sherman’s talent and optimism add color, movement, and inspiration to the community. He’s an active participant in the local dancing competition and Alzheimer’s Association fundraiser Dancing With The Stars. In addition, he serves on the Columbus Music and

make music for video games and commercials. A selfproclaimed anime nerd, he says his music almost always ends up sounding like an anime opening.

Sherman says writing his own music has been perhaps one of the biggest learning experiences of all for him. He remembers having one of his songs played at a venue where the DJ began ripping the song apart. While most people would be heartbroken at the criticism of something so much work had gone into, Sherman took it as an opportunity to regroup and learn how to mix and master and produce a better-sounding result. His hard work paid off. In 2020, Sherman wrote and self-produced

Entertainment Council, where he collaborates on ideas for creating a cohesive ecosystem between the music industry and our local economy.

In line with his optimistic spirit, Sherman has written a book that he hopes will be helpful to others. In 2018 he wrote and published “The Search,” a book that details his dating ups and downs and encourages others how to maximize their singleness. “The book is a time machine,” Sherman explains, “I can’t go back and fix any of that stuff, but I can encourage others to not make the same mistakes.” A link to order “The Search” is on Sherman’s instagram linktree @_emusical_.

Sherman’s story may seem simple, but it’s what he’s

his first album called True Lullaby. He has published work consistently every year since, creating it all in his home studio. With hints of reggae, synthesized movement, and R&B, Sherman’s songs all have one thing in common: they are hopelessly romantic. “They’re either really happy or sad and depressing,” Sherman laughs. Under the creative name of EMusical, Sherman’s songs can be found on Spotify, iTunes, Pandora, and TuneCore.

One of the biggest factors in his musical evolution, he says, is having people who “are willing to be honest with you.” Instead of letting criticism dull his light, Sherman has learned to, as he says, “take emotion out of it,” and continue

done with his life that stands out, the way he turns whatever life throws at him into a lesson, and transforms pain into strength. His smile and the sparkles in his eyes are sincere, and his desire to share a piece of himself with the world is too. Sherman is unique in that he is unmistakably positive. He really believes it will all work out, and his belief is contagious.

Sherman shares his work on his social media account @_ emusical_. u

Group counseling covers topics such as emotional regulation, a life skill which can have a profound lasting impact. The focus is on intervention in schools, and over 200 young males between the ages of 10-16 have participated since the program began.

“Research shows the interconnectedness of poverty, violence, and crime,” Shawna says. With a background in social work, she was compelled to address the root cause of crime in our area.

In 2016, Shawna developed the nonprofit organization Boyz 2 Men Development, Inc. with the mission of helping young people through mentoring programs and foster care. The nonprofit is community focused and hosts community events throughout the year.

Boyz 2 Men consists of many facets of service. The

Boyz 2 Men runs a program called M.A.T.C.H., an acronym that stands for Mentoring, Affirmation, Teaching, Counseling, and Healing. M.A.T.C.H. was started with the belief that “It only takes a match to get the fire started.” The program offers help to youth who have little to no supervision at home, who need to learn life skills, work through personal trauma, and find

“We give a lot back to the community,” Shawna explains. Boyz 2 Men hosts community events throughout the year, such as Teen Summit, an event that appeals to youth with its 106 & Park style. Attendees receive free food, school supplies, and enjoy giveaways and music, with discussion about relevant community topics. Representatives from a local bank attend events and teach participants life skills such as financial literacy, credit, and opening a checking account. Members from the local police force present information on community topics and interact with attendees.

Their annual Harvest Festival, another community event, features games, candy, popcorn, a DJ, and even a baby goat. The event is a big hit in the community, but Shawna always needs the support of volunteers and donations.

In August, Boyz 2 Men will partner with Chattahoochee Adventure Company for Fam Friday, a night focused on supporting families while having fun.

With a focus on helping young boys with little adult supervision and limited resources, Boyz 2 Men hosts events that appeal to this group, like Mancave Saturdays, with food, fun, and football.

Boyz 2 Men Development, Inc is not just about helping develop young boys into strong community leaders. It also seeks to support and help families – and they do help girls as well. “Our vision is stable communities with people who are healthy, productive,

and self-reliant,” Shawna says. Parenting workshops are offered through Boyz 2 Men on a monthly basis through their M.A.T.C.H. program.

Recently, Boyz 2 Men received a grant from the Columbus Office of Crime Prevention for their M.A.T.C.H. program in recognition of the program’s important work in supporting and building up youth. Shawna speaks of the importance of teaching youth to love their community, and tells the story of an ex-gang member who no longer wanted to be in a gang because he now loves his city.

We are more likely to want to protect a place and contribute our talents when we feel we belong, are valued, seen, and heard. Shawna understands this and is striving to give local youth a safe place to discover their

Foster care placement is a big part of Boyz 2 Men’s services. Foster parents are always needed for placing children ages 0-15 in homes. If you are interested in becoming a foster parent, please contact Shawna, and she will walk you through the process. In addition, Boyz 2 Men is always in need of donations for foster children, such as clothing, shoes, diapers, and baby wipes. Monetary donations are also always needed and welcome.

Shawna’s work with underprivileged youth has made a difference in the lives she’s touched as well as in the collective community. She sees the big picture and

worth, importance, and place in our community. “I want to give males the tools they need to lead households,” Shawna says.“This isn’t work for me,” she explains, “It’s ministry, it’s in my heart, it’s my purpose - it’s a new awakening when you’re working in your purpose.”

As she gives so much to the local community, Shawna asks that we consider giving in return. Boyz 2 Men Development, Inc. is always in need of volunteers. She is looking for male mentors who can offer two hours of their time per week. She’d like to see volunteers teach participants life skills such as changing a tire and fishing. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering,

understands what this community needs, and the impact of her work is evident across the city. Healing takes time, change takes time, and Shawna is in it for the long haul as she anticipates a future where all community members are empowered contributors to a healthy city.

Ogle. “They have been very nurturing in helping me explore my own creativity and guiding the way to make things my own,” she says. Ogle, Amanda’s first art teacher, embraced their differences in artistic styles and provided unwavering support and guidance both in and beyond the classroom.

Geri Davis played a pivotal role in Weldon’s artistic journey when she moved back to Columbus after living in Opelika for a few years, welcoming her back into the local art community with open arms. “I had moved away from Columbus in 2005 and opened a brick and mortar shop. It

Boldness

Amanda Weldon is an accomplished artist and interior stylist whose vibrant and eclectic creations have captivated the community. Her creative journey began with a deep passion for art, nurtured by inspiring teachers and her endlessly supportive family during her formative years. Amanda’s love for interior styling seamlessly intertwines with her artistic prowess, allowing her to craft unique and captivating pieces that play with duality and contrast in texture and color.

Reflecting on her creative roots, Weldon fondly recalls, “I’ve always been really interested in art. I had some really great art teachers during my childhood. Luckily, I was able to stay in contact with many of them.” The profound impact of her teachers laid the foundation for her artistic exploration, enabling her to create art that defies conventional norms. “I’m really drawn to interior design and home stylings,” she explains. “It’s really easy to have those things play with each other. I really love colors and how I can bring art and textures into the design. I love mixing and matching everything. I don’t really follow any rules when it comes to

was an eclectic mix of vintage items and furniture that I was painting and redoing, but after about 5 years, I realized that art was where I wanted to focus,” she shares. The experience of running her own shop inspired her to transform her art from a beloved hobby into a full-fledged career. “Opening the shop really inspired me to make art an actual career instead of just a hobby that I enjoy. Now, I’m really able to focus on my art and my interior styling without the overhead of a brick and mortar business.”

Colors play a vital role in Amanda’s artistic expression. “I have come to realize that I’m a very visually stimulated person. Even when it comes to learning things, I need to see it, not just hear it. I feel like colors just give life to everything, and I know it’s what I like to be surrounded by.” Her artistic journey continues to be fueled by her deep connection to colors and textures, which allow her to break free from limitations and create pieces that are rich with emotion and expression.

Beyond her visual artistry, Weldon also finds fulfillment in interior styling, which she describes as a more word-of- mouth venture at the moment. “I think I do it more for pure enjoyment as opposed to paying the bills. It’s not something I’ve gone super mainstream with, but it’s probably where

my true love and interest lie. I’m always willing to work on that, but it’s not necessarily something I’m just offering at the moment. My commissions are open, though, and if you want a painting or a styling consultation, just get in touch with me.”

When it comes to subject matter, Weldon’s favorite pieces involve floral designs and abstracts. “Other than my abstracts, my favorite thing to do is floral pieces. I will venture out and try anything that somebody wants, but if it’s up to me, it’s just an abstract piece with lots of layers or something floral. As far as what drives me to paint, it’s fun and freeing. I get joy out of it, and if someone else gets the same out of it, that’s all you could ask for,” she says.

Apart from her artistic endeavors, Weldon leads a fulfilling personal life. She has been married for 14 years to her wonderful husband, Dusty, who supports her creative pursuits. Together, they share a household filled with art andAmandacreativity.Weldon’s art is a celebration of colors, textures, and emotions. Whether it’s the vivid abstraction of colors or the graceful elegance of floral creations, her work breathes life into the canvas, painting a story of inspiration, creativity, and unwavering passion.

my art or my design.”

While Weldon did not pursue a formal art education in college, her passion for the medium has grown from her early childhood. After completing high school, she sought out extracurricular adult classes to further hone her skills.

She attributes her growth as an artist to the mentorship and support provided by local artists Geri Davis and Rose

Columbus is privileged to have an artist of such caliber, enriching the community with a kaleidoscope of colors and artistic brilliance. With her passion for art and unwavering dedication to her craft, Weldon continues to enrich the artistic landscape of the community she calls home. As she explores new creative frontiers, her unique style and boundless creativity promise to inspire and delight for years to come.

GROOVE LIKE A JAM BAND SHRED like a Rockstar

demanding and aurally fascinating. With grooves that pull from the best of a jam band, combined with rockstar level guitar solos, their songs follow a strong storyline that grounds you in their world.. They have that “thing” – the brilliant

“Jacob is a very good wordsmith, and Luke’s structures are fantastic. He has the whole big picture of a song.”

They express their appreciation of the beauty of the Columbus music scene, stemming from the mutual support

If you don’t know local band Velvet Cab yet, you will soon. Their trajectory in the Columbus music scene is one to watch, as they ramp up for exciting new releases and live shows, including being on the star-studded lineup for RushSouth in October, alongside artists like Dawes, Maggie Rose, and Government Mule.

With almost 900,000 streams on their 2019 Spotify release, Sunshine, their sound has something for everyone. Original and intellectual, their chord progressions and melodic lines are chromatic and complex. The highs and lows are marked by rolling, offset beats, a powerful combination that holds the

combination of compatible talents, friendship, and creative chemistry that allows them to recreate that perfect musical moment over and over and over again.

When writing music, the band explores various themes, from relationships to feelings and perseverance. Their music serves as a medium for self-expression, allowing each member to convey their emotions and thoughts through lyrics and melodies.

that can be found among the members of the community. “There’s no drama,” Scottie explains. “It’s been really easy and fun to work with other musicians because everybody is so willing to help. If you break a string or need someone to stand-in, someone will almost always volunteer.” With Luke stepping in as bass player for The Shelby Brothers for a few of their gigs after Evan Collins’ departure from Columbus, and Scottie joining the Uptown Sound Group, a collective of local musicians who are stewards of the The Loft recording studio. This reciprocal generosity is what our music scene is becoming known for.

The allure of Velvet Cab’s music lies not only in their technical prowess, but in the genuine joy and camaraderie they share on stage. They are not just musicians; they are storytellers, weaving tales through music that touch the soul, and leaving the audience with a lasting sense of wonder. As they look toward the future, Velvet Cab envisions creating more music,

line between laid back surf rock and the psychedelic musical innovations of Pink Floyd.

The band members’ musical chemistry can be attributed to their relationships, both as siblings and lifelong friends, and their impressive technical and artistic skills. Brothers Scottie and Jacob DeClue operate the upper octaves on vocals and guitar, while Luke Martz and Jeremy Cosper hold it down on vocals, bass and drums. Band practices are held in Martz’s family basement - every inch adorned with organs, amps, and premium vocal mics. It is this mutual support and friendship that provides the foundation for their tight-knit sound. Their ability to relax and just create together seems integral to their process. Watching them rehearse is like high school band practice in your best friend’s basement, “except we’re old enough to drink!” laughs Jacob, sipping on a Jai Alai. Their banter evolves into musical conversations, as though they’re constantly listening to some radio station the rest of us can’t hear.

“Sometimes I feel like musicians are on the same brain wavelength. I don’t know how to describe it,” Scottie says. “You can sense where your teammates are going with the ball. It’s a strong connection, and that connection grows stronger over time. We sound a lot tighter than we used to.”

Each track is very relaxed, in the pocket, but technically

The songwriting is a collaborative effort, with the vocal and guitar melodies initially written by Jacob, and the bass and musical lines by Luke. The former draws inspiration from greats like The Beatles and Pink Floyd and the latter from his mother’s love for Motown and experimental sounds of Radiohead.

As a self-reported man of few words, Jacob started writing as an outlet for self-expression. “Everyone contributes and adds in their own ways,” he explains. Luke continues, “I just like to come up with cool bass and guitar parts, and then the melody and lyrics kinda come second.” Scottie embellishes,

deepening their connection with their fans, and sharing their passion for music with even larger audiences. Keep up with them on Facebook and Instagram (@thevelvetcab) and grab tickets to see them at RushSouth in October. u
