Finding your way in and around golden tourism golden Golden’s unique location surrounded by three mountain ranges--the Rockies, Purcell and Selkirk mountains, and five of the most scenic national parks Canada has to offer makes Golden an ideal destination for lovers of hiking. Supported by funding through Destination British Columbia’s Community Tourism Opportunities programme, Tourism Golden is producing a Hiking Trail Map which will showcase a range of hikes in and around Golden, from the family-friendly Rotary Trails to the more challenging Dogtooth Ridge Hike at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

In collaboration with Parks Canada, Tourism Golden has also been able to include maps and trail information for Yoho and Glacier national parks, and clearly show Golden’s unique location in the middle of these two iconic mountain parks, both of which offer a wide range of hiking trails and other experiences. “Over the years we have had many requests for a hiking map from visitors, tourism stakeholders and community members so we are excited and pleased to be able to fulfill that demand” said Joanne Sweeting, Marketing Manager of Tourism Golden.

More BIKE TRAILS Finding more and more Places to Ride Golden cycling club The Golden Cycling Club has been hard at work this season to firm up a couple of new trails for your riding pleasure. The new trails include the finale of the existing Gold Rush trail, from the power line down to the end of Take It Easy; and a new connector, The Mighty Quinn, which will connect CBT Mainline to the new part of Gold Rush. These two trails will both be preferred direction (down) flow trails, enabling some loop action in the CBT network. The total distance of the new trails will be in the vicinity of 3 km. They will feature some earth work and alternative lines to provide challenge, but the base trail tread will be accommodating to beginner/ intermediate level riders (especially in the downhill direction). In addition to the hard work being done in the CBT network, the Golden Cycling Club has now also inked a deal for
the Mountain Shadows area. Once the forestry operation has been finished up, the Club will be able to work on fixing up the trails and technical features in that area. There is a trail map for the area on GCC’s website and the entire system will be featured in printed maps next summer. The Golden Cycling Club is a nonprofit organization that promotes and improves cycling in Golden and the surrounding area. With the support of volunteers and paid trail crews, the Golden Cycling Club improves and maintains the CBT, Moonraker, Mount 7 and Mountain Shadows trail networks. The Club relies on membership dues, donations and grant funding to ensure these fantastic outdoor facilities are available for all to enjoy! being cheap climbers.... Dylan weir Climbing vacations aren’t easy vacations. I sometimes ask, are they even vacations at all? Climbing days wear the body down, and rest days become few and far between. Food is sparse and can be hard to access. This was definitely the case at our camp by Magic Wood climbing area.
Our tent was located some thousand metres above sea level and many miles from the nearest shop. Every bite eaten at this camp had to be sought after. Too many bites and we’d run out of food, too little and we wouldn’t perform on our projects. Being the cheap climbers we are, we had no car, no means of transportation to get to and from the store. We had just our feet at the end of our legs and the thumbs on our hands to try and hitch a ride to the store. This often meant that going to get groceries would take the entire day, or longer. Once at the store, decisions on what to buy had to be made wisely, questions like: What kind of foods will last in a tent that sits in the mountain sun all day? What can we afford on our dirtbag budget? Most importantly, what foods could we Magic wood Switzerland | Dylan weir photo eat that will allow us to perform? Our meals were simple. We had no stove, so our only means of cooking was to start a campfire. Breakfasts generally consisted of bread and apples with some kind of spread on them. On a good day we would
include a bit of mixed fruit, but only if we had recently been to the store. As the day went on, our meals would worsen. Sometimes lunch would consist of nothing more than a can of tuna, depending on our bread situation. Dinner was much the same, often being just a cold can of beans. On occasion we would roast potatoes and peppers in the fire, and call it a “feast.” If only our backpacks weren’t full of climbing and photo gear, our meals at the crag could make for a much more sustainable diet. On the bright side, we hardly ever had any dishes to clean! However, when you’re cheap, young and psyched to climb Swiss granite boulders, you do whatever it takes. Sometimes it’s not pretty. Sometimes you’re hungry. But you’re always stoked come morning to get back out and try to climb the hardest rocks possible. It’s the way the climbers’ cycle works. Climb, sleep, and maybe, eat. Just like everyone else, we have our priorities, and we make our own sacrifices to make things work. Another man’s worst nightmare is probably our dream come true. Reveals “Scientifically Significant” Findings wildsight The discovery of a brand new spider species, the first Canadian record of a rare spider, and the first B.C. sighting in 100 years of a Herrington’s Fingernail Clam are some of the significant science findings from the first Flathead BioBlitz, according to recently released data. The August 2012 BioBlitz was conducted by 10 scientists, including six from the Royal B.C. Museum. It focused on documenting a stunning variety of rare, at-risk and extensive invertebrates from clams to

butterflies to spiders. The second Flathead River Valley BioBlitz took place June with a team of 20 biologists spending a week traipsing through the spectacular river, valley and surrounding Rocky Mountains to document bird and fish species.
“Scientists did not find a single introduced species of spider or mollusc, which is very unusual,” added Peter Wood, terrestrial campaigns director for CPAWS BC. “They found 71 spider species, and 14 of these findings are considered scientifically significant.”
“The BioBlitz results prove that B.C.’s Flathead has remarkable biodiversity not just in mammals and plants but also in a stunning variety of smaller organisms that are essential for a healthy ecosystem,” said Wildsight executive director John Bergenske.
Although the 2012 expedition did not set out to document birds, BioBlitz scientists recorded nine species of Flathead birds that are either classified as rare regionally or as “declining and rare” on the American Bird Conservancy watch list. These included the Trumpeter Swan, Calliope Hummingbird and Short-eared Owl, as well as the red-listed Prairie Falcon and blue-listed Olive-sided Flycatcher.

“We didn’t expect to see some of these birds in the Flathead and decided to zoom in for a closer look this year with a bigger team,” said Sarah Cox, Sierra Club BC’s interim executive director. “Ornithologists and birders were awake at first light to spread out in the valley and mountains to get an accurate picture of which rare and at-risk bird species call the Flathead home.”
The 2012 BioBlitz also recorded several rare butterfly species, including the Gillette’s Checkerspot, which is red-listed in B.C., and the blue-listed Bronze Copper. Another 2012 BioBlitz find was the Rocky Mountain Sculpin, an unusual fish species with tiny teeth, found only in the Flathead in B.C. Mining and energy development have been banned in B.C.’s Flathead River Valley due to its ecological significance, but the valley is still open for logging. Wildsight, Sierra Club BC, CPAWS BC and the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative are working to protect the Flathead permanently with the designation of a national park in the southeastern one-third of the valley, to fill in the missing piece of the adjacent Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. The groups are also calling for a Wildlife Management Area in the rest of the Flathead and adjoining habitat. www.wildsight.ca

Dernièrement, j’ai visionné en ligne le vidéo s’intitulant « Francophones en Colombie-Britanique ». Le vidéo, d’une durée de douze minutes, traite de l’arrivée des Canadiens français en Colombie-Britanique d’une manière éducative et captivante. Une des affirmations, provenant du visionnement, disait que les Canadiens français sont arrivées en Colombie-Britanique approximativement vers la fin du 18e siècle comme voyageur accompagnant des explorateurs qui recherchaient de nouvelles fourrures pour le commerce des compagnies de la Baie d’Hudson et du Nord-Ouest. Beaucoup d’autres explorateurs de provenance francophone ont voyagé ainsi durant le siècle suivant en Nouvelle-Calédonie, ancient nom de la Colombie-Britanique. Des missionnaires et évèques catholiques se sont aussi intéressés à cette terre de l’ouest canadien. Par la suite, des écoles, églises et hôpitaux ont été constuits par des francophones de cette région de plus en plus convoitée. Cependant, qu’en est-il maintenant de la francophonie ailleurs dans le Canada? Est-ce que d’autres voyageurs ont laissé des traces de la langue française et influencé la culture locale? Aujourd’hui, plus de neuf millions et demi de résidents canadiens parlent français, ce qui représente près du tiers de la population au Canada. Le français est la langue maternelle de 22 per cent des Canadiens et Canadiennes. C’est au Québec que vivent la majorité des francophones. Le français y est la langue maternelle ou la langue seconde de sept millions de personnes. À l’extérieur du
Québec, deux millions et demi de personnes parlent français. Environ 1 million d’entre elles utilisent le français comme langue première. En Ontario c’est un million et demi de gens qui parlent français. Au Canada atlantique, plus de 450 000 résidents parlent français. Au nombre des provinces atlantiques, il y a le Nouveau‑Brunswick, la seule province officiellement bilingue du Canada. Dans l’Ouest canadien, qui regroupe le Manitoba, la Saskatchewan, l’Alberta et la Colombie‑Britannique, plus de 650 000 personnes parlent français. Pour ce qui est des trois territoires, soit le Yukon, le Nunavut et les Territoires du Nord‑Ouest, plus de 8 000 personnes ont une connaissance du français. Selon Canadian Parents for French, près de deux millions d’étudiants au Canada, de programmes de base ou d’immersion, apprennent le français comme langue seconde. En étudiant le français, les élèves ont l’opportunité de communiquer dans la langue officielle d’un grand nombre de pays. Le français se parle sur tous les continents du monde entier. Chaque année, plus de 250 000 nouveaux immigrants arrivent au Canada, dont 35 000 personnes qui parlent le français et qui apportent une contribution à la francophonie canadienne. It is truly unbelievable the number of great acts we get even though Golden is such a small town. I dare anybody to investigate this issue. No other town our size gets the number of great artists we get. I think the main reason is the people behind it and their dedication to bringing it! If I think back

Maybe it’s the sunlight, but people always feel a little happier in the summertime. This, of course, is only the start. Here are a few other ways to get rid of the stress and live a more purposeful life.

Forgive: That’s right. Let someone who wronged you off the hook. They probably won’t notice, but you are bound to have a few fewer sleepless nights. Let yourself make a mistake: You’re going to make mistakes. Accept it as part of life, and give yourself permission to still try new things. Just breathe: Nothing is as big a deal as it seems. What looks like a problem that might completely overwhelm you today will become nothing more than a good story tomorrow. Stop: That’s right, no matter how busy your life is, take a moment to just stop.
Try something for the first time: Allowing yourself to risk just a little bit every day will make a difference. Trust: Take a moment and just believe everything will be alright. It will. Sleep in: Hit the snooze over and over again and take a morning to sleep in and enjoy being reenergized. Have faith: The world is not such a bad place, and people are simply not as bad as we think. It’s time we started having a bit more faith in people and give them a chance. Improve: There is always one thing we can do to change ourselves make a list of a few things that we can do to get better. Life can always get better. Things can always improve. Take a second and know that yesterday’s finished and the future is bright.

Originally from Winnipeg, The Sturgeons are a folk roots band. Having worked with them in the past all I have to say is they are awesome—genuinely great people with amazing talents. Their vocals are impeccable and the guitars are just as good. To make a reference to the great Tom Waits, if you listen to The Sturgeons “Chocolate Jesus” you can hear the great voice I’m talking about, that raspy, bourbon-soaked throat that comes out in a very special way. Accompanied with hand drums and mandolin, they undeniably have their own sound. Maybe the fact that The Sturgeons’ Luke and Cal Hamilton are identical twins also brings something special to the table. There’s always something unique about twins’ relationships. You should be able to tell just by all the great arrangements and the perfect vocal harmonies in their music. Set to play on July 27 at the Rockwater Grill & Bar, The Sturgeons are performing a no cover show for all you Goldenites who enjoy great live music.

There’s so much to say about this Canadian icon. Playing an early show at The Golden Taps on July 19, Fred Eaglesmith has got some of the most dedicated fans out there. They even call themselves Fredheads in reference to Deadheads (Greatful Dead fans). Known for being the ultimate road dog, Fred is very busy between touring and recording. His first album recorded in 1980 was simply called Fred Eaglesmith; he’s made 19 albums to date. A friend of mine referred to him as the Canadian Tom Waits, and I must say I couldn’t agree more. In my experience a typical Fred show is a great mix between country, rock, amazing storytelling skills, trains, cars, guns, drinking and the list goes on and on.

Set to take the stage after Fred are the Coal Creek Boys—the perfect fit to follow Fred. After several attempts to book them in Golden, it is finally happening. Playing the same genre as Fred, there is no doubt they are the best band to finish the night. Coming to Golden as a three-piece band, the Coal Creek Boys are rock/ country band with a serious blues background. This promises to be one of the best shows to hit Golden this summer, especially in a small and very intimate venue. This time of year, there are some spectacular things going on—raging rivers, tacky trails, blossoming flowers in timed succession, snow on peaks, all-consuming storms and sightings of coveted animals. From footprints noticed, the drumming sound of the woodpecker’s tap, squawking squirrels to the luminous and haunting lakeside loon call, something outside can grab any one of us, bringing us exactly to this moment. So what, you say?

Get out your pen and journal, your pencil and sketchbook, your paints and canvas, or your reliable camera and document, imprint, appreciate the memories. It’s time to remember – we are the keepers of nature. In the end, we are all children of this earth.

College of the Rockies Adventure Tourism Business Operations graduate Greg Snell has the best job in the world - or at least one of them. Snell was announced as the winner of The Best Job in the World – Wildlife Caretaker by Tourism Australia on Friday, June 21. Wildlife Caretaker was one of six positions up for grabs in addition to Chief Funster, Outback Adventurer, Park Ranger, Lifestyle Photographer and Taste Master. With over 330,000 applicants from 196 countries, Snell was the only Canadian to make it to the finals. After being named a finalist and flying to Australia, Snell competed in a week of adventure, nature-based, culinary, social media and photography challenges against two other finalists in the Wildlife Caretaker category before being named the winner.
As Wildlife Caretaker, Snell will live on Kangaroo Island in South Australia for six months and spend his time swimming with great white sharks, snorkeling with sea lions, hanging out with kangaroos and helping to conserve the pristine natural environment of the island. He will document his experience through videos and blogs.

He then moved on to work for a Canadian adventure tourism company as tour leader in the Southern Cone of South America, leading small group adventure travel trips through Chile, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and The Patagonia.
“I am incredibly elated to have won the position of Wildlife Caretaker,” Snell says. “I can’t wait to take my passion and enthusiasm for life, travel and conservation to beautiful South Australia. There is so much there to offer the adventurous traveller and I am looking forward to sharing all of my amazing experiences with the world.”
Snell will begin his role of Wildlife Caretaker in early December. In the meantime he plans to remain in Australia for a couple of more weeks, getting to know the area better before travelling back to Brazil and then spending some time with friends and family in Canada before starting the six-month position.

ALL photos submitted Three years ago, Mint Lemonade Designs (MLD) was a fledgling idea and experiment in Golden. Now MLD has evolved into one of Golden’s coveted jewelry endeavours. From unique designs and packaging, there is no mistaking the style that Tara Nedjelski, owner of Mint Lemonade Designs, has put together. “Ever since I was a kid I’ve made jewelry,” Tara explains. “I bought or found jewelry, took it apart and put it back together all the time with my own vision. Now, I’ve developed a style and a theme that really works for MLD – antiqued brass and bronze and unique miniature pieces designed to be fun and well priced.”

extended triangle pose dalia If you are engaged in any physical activity this summer, such as running, biking, or swimming, you might find that your legs and hips feel tight. One of the many wonderful poses that Yoga has to offer for stretching and opening the hips and legs is Extended Triangle pose (Utthita Trikonasana). As a bonus, you also get to open your heart and shoulders! Stand with your feet wide apart. Turn your right foot towards the front of your mat, and your left foot to about 90 degrees from it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; align the heel of your right foot with the arch of your left. Align your hips with the wide side of your mat. As you inhale, lift your arms to a T position; as you exhale â&#x20AC;&#x201C; tuck your right hip in and lean straight over the right leg, bending at the hip, not the waist (make sure your right knee is straight but not locked, and is facing your toes). Keep moving your torso to the right and downwards and place your right hand on the floor, or on a block, or lean it against your right leg. Engage the right quadriceps. Now look up, inhale, and stretch your left arm and fingers skywards. Rotate your torso upwards, as if you wanted your heart to gaze right at the sun. Your arms should form a straight line. Stay for a few breaths, and then carefully come up and repeat on the other side. As a mental exercise, try to count how many triangles your body forms in this pose. Namaste. I imagine that some soothingly tranquil, delightfully sunny day hundreds of years ago, a pineapple-eating, hula-dancing islander way out in the Pacific looked across a channel at an obviously superior island and thought, “It can’t be that far.” Balanced atop the biggest piece of driftwood he could cast off and using a bundle of palm tree leaves fashioned as an oar, he aimed for the other island and didn’t look back. Hours later, exhausted and breathless he collapsed on the scorching white-sand beach he had kept in his crosshairs and thought, “Dear god, there must have been an easier way.” Flash forward to today, when fibreglass and foam have replaced driftwood, carbon fibre has replaced a bundle of leaves and stand up paddleboarding has become a worldwide phenomenon. What actually originated as a stable way for beach boys and instructors to snap and sell photos to surfing tourists in Hawaii in the 1960s has just exploded into another method to surf waves on the ocean, careen down rivers and explore calm seas and lakes. To begin to enjoy this sport, you’ll need the same two pieces of equipment our grass-skirt-wearing friend started with: a paddle and a board. While the exact dimensions and materials will differ depending on your intended water body of use, expect your board to be hilariously large enough to keep your feet dry when standing still on it in calm water. Even building one yourself (see Steve Crowe’s Summer 2012 article in Kicking Horse Magazine)—requiring fancy tools,

hours of dedication and resulting in an inexplicable sense of pride— paddleboards are a very expensive piece of sports equipment. Momand-pop stores such as Costco and Walmart have recently begun mass- sean (rookie) nyilassi producing models with inevitably cheap materials. These are fit for beginners who are unsure about the sport to dabble in calm water, and include a paddle for $800 to $900, so you can get started and get hooked.

Moving up to a proper board purchased for more than $1000 at a sports shop such as Higher Ground in Golden, delivers upgraded materials and machine craftsmanship that offer the improved performance an intermediate seeks as well as the versatility to conquer an ocean wave or brave your first little rapid. A recent development is inflatable boards that bounce off sharp river rocks, roll into your trunk on sketchy logging roads and pack to checked baggage size for travel. A final upgrade to a hand-crafted board with specific dimensions tailored to your stature and optimized for a specific use will cost up to $2000, and a feather-light, indestructible paddle will set you back another $300 plus. Despite the costs, the sport itself offers an excellent core and upper body workout, doesn’t discriminate based on size or fitness and allows you to explore the water from a whole new perspective. It is customary in some parts of the world to hug and kiss upon first meeting of strangers, friends, lovers or acquaintances. The part I find particularly awkward is kissing betty rides strangers, sober. I recently took a trip across the ocean, and besides the funny language spoken between English-speaking people, I had a hard time figuring out if I was supposed to be hugging and kissing everyone I was introduced to, or if the common handshake was friendly enough. It appeared as though the first introduction warranted a smooch, but the second meeting might only involve a warm smile, depending on the person. It was quite awkward at first to figure out who were the huggers and who were the smilers without looking like a prude, but halfway through my trip, I had pretty much locked it down.

Since returning to Golden, I haven’t hugged or kissed anyone, besides my lover, and it makes me kind of sad. At first, something so foreign to me seemed exactly that, but the sooner I got used to it, the sooner I yearned for it when seeing a familiar face. There’s something about affection from strangers or new friends that can make your darkest mood lighten and make you feel loved, if only for a minute. I find somewhat of an appeal in watching two straight men kiss on the cheek and share an say hello with a kiss | stock photo affectionate, good-to-see-you-again hug. Whether it’s because they
haven’t seen each other in a long while or they saw each other the day before, it melts my heart and makes me question why some men are so scared of another’s’ sexuality that they fear the smallest form of affection from another man. Have I spoken of the insane question I was asked halfway through the winter season? “When a gay man looks at himself in the mirror, does he get turned on?” Try to not bust a gut, I am completely serious, someone (a man, obviously) asked me this question. I returned that question with the same question, when you look in the mirror are you turned on by yourself? If you love yourself (if you don’t, there’s a problem), then you should see through all of your flaws and find beauty in your reflection. But to say that you’d be turned on by the sheer sight of yourself, gay or straight, seems a bit unlikely. To say that masturbation is the lonely’s release is not to say that a person would be completely satisfied in being alone. I’d have to say that the answer to that question is no. Kind of off-topic, but I thought it was worthy of a share. Try hugging and kissing a friend the next time you see them and check out their reaction. Happy hugging people!
