EXPLORE THE NORTH COLUMBIA

HYBRID SEASON

GET MOVING THIS FALL Andrea Johnson

W

We live in a dynamic environment where the changing seasons constantly brings new adventure. Our bikes will be soon be stored away to collect dust and our skis will be tuned up with the anticipation of fresh tracks. But in this hybrid season of snowy mountain-tops and dry lowelevation trails, our seasonal gear can live in our garage in harmony for just a few more weeks. This transitional time of year boasts endless opportunities for outdoor activities with alpine touring, cross-country biking, canoeing and sport climbing all a possibility for the day’s agenda.

With a couple extra thin layers that will cut the wind and some warm gloves, exploring the CBT trails during the fall can be quite a refreshing experience. Hike to the Mt. 7 summit and watch as nature transforms from one season to the next as you gain elevation. Pack your touring gear and endure glacial skiing to satisfy your craving for winter. Go for a paddle down the Columbia River admiring the snow covered peaks while enjoying the crispness of autumn. Take advantage of what our natural surroundings have given us and don’t give up on summer activities quite yet!

Early European settlers came to North America and built homes, bridges and large public buildings using the technique of post and beam construction. Dukabors, Mennonites and many other secular Germanic settlers brought in the technique of mortise and tenon joinery. This extremely low cost construction combined with the abundant amount of wood fibre on the land was an obvious choice for building production. With its large sturdy beams, timber frame construction is simple, elegant and purposeful. Japan, China, Norway, Germany, the UK and now North America hold this traditional building style in high regard with centuries old cultural traditions and ceremonies. Once thought of as a utilitarian building technique, timber framing has reemerged as a mature re branded green technology structure that features a rustic elegance in its architectural designs at a fraction of the cost of a steal frame super structure. Timber frames are a design showcase in many new buildings across North America including an increase in residential and commercial construction. As Golden matures into a style of its own, it has adopted timber frame design into renovations or new construction of hybrid homes, timber frame facades and the world recognized timber frame pedestrian bridge. Canadian Timberframes (CTF) of Golden, BC is ubiquitous as an industry leader in the revival of

timber frame construction in North America and is a major exporter to the USA and beyond. CTF has an advantage compared to many other timber frame companies; their team has grown and matured within the wood fibre industry either as foresters themselves or started out hand carving joints with chisels and mallets. In 1999, a group of local Goldenites noticed the potential in value added wood fiber. Their connections in the forestry business and construction industry were a seamless fit to create an unprecedented exportable product. Their key to success was the purchase of a Hundegger Computer Numerically Controlled joinery machine (CNC). Another advantage to CTF is their ease of access to ready-to-use fibre inventory. The regional Douglas Fir is a superior product for timber framing. Pat Soles and co-founder and shareholder in CTF still walks the wood yards of Louisiana Pacific (LP) and hand selects logs for CTF. “CTF focus is relationships with the home buyer” states Jeff Bowes. Jeff, originally from Ontario working on site, cutting and joining timber frames, over the past 25 years, he rose through various timberframe business to his present position of business development and sales. His partners Pierre Lussier -production and design, and Pat Soles and his brother Brett Souls remain board members and share holders. Historically in the construction business most home builders worked Business to Business (B2B)

and the client chose through the general contractor a style of home they specialized in. Today Jeff and Kristina Smith focus on sales and marketing. Currently 80% of their work is directly to the end consumer; a direct business to consumer model. This has greatly opened the market with a result increasing their sales by 100% in 24 months. As of October they hit their sales projection for the 2013 fiscal year. The B2B connection with architects and contractors have grown as well. CTF is now expanded beyond just the super structure. The CTF way of thinking of customer first and simplicity has now developed an almost complete construction package for their client from house wrap, insulation, windows and nails. This way the interface of superstructure and walls is all connected and thought out during the engineering and design phases. “With this increase in demand on our shop we have not missed a delivery date yet”. A few years ago CTF had a downturn in sales when the market crashed in 2008. By 2010 their sales were less than half their sales in 2008. When Pat Soles recognized Jeff’s

business development talents and brought him to CTF. Pat’s biggest concern was their family of workers. When they recruited Jeff Bowes to the Business Development Team Pat’s concern was not numbers, the forefront of his concern was local jobs that support families in the town that he grew up in. Pat’s concern became one of Jeff’s primary goals in his new role. Today the team of 25 at Canadian Timberframes are all full time and year round employed. In the past 2 years they have doubled their design team, increased their floor workers, finishers and hired production management whom have all settled in and either purchased houses in Golden or are building new homes for themselves. The impressive observation that Jeff notes about his coworkers is that the team truly enjoy each other’s company, unlike city factory staff, they work and recreate in the mountains together. In Jeff’s opinion, this comradeship is the most important aspect of the company’s progress. Recently Canadian Timberframes won Business of the Year at Golden’s Community Excellence Awards. www.canadiantimberframes.com

TRAVELING TOWNIE

YOUR LIFE IS A VACATION

"BUT I WORK 40 HOURS A WEEK..." Andrea Johnson

Y

“Your life is a Vacation” …is what my Dad said to me when I told him that I wanted to plan another trip abroad. Obviously, I completely disagreed with him. “But I work 40 hours a week,” I said. “Ya in a mountain town, where lunch and coffee breaks are synonymous with ski breaks,” he refuted. “Ok, ok but I want to go somewhere exotic, somewhere beautiful.” “Are you kidding me? You are privileged enough where all you have to do is look out your window to be surrounded by the beauty of the mountains and wilderness. Most of us have to go on a vacation to have views like yours.” This got me thinking. Why did

I possess such a great urge to ‘getaway’ when my life was considered a vacation for most? Many of us with the travel bug live with this incessant voice in our heads convincing us that our everyday lives are mundane and that we need to go away somewhere exotic experiencing another culture, to truly live. Most of the time, I couldn’t agree with this more. Even thinking about travelling induces feelings of excitement and relief in the possibility that I can escape from my reality. In true form, I was listening to that voice inside my head. However, I have recently begun to recognize that my reality was a vacation for most people. I live in

Coffee Break?

a beautiful mountain town where the accessibility of hiking, biking, climbing, kayaking and skiing is within minutes of my doorstep. Where a quick afternoon run boasts views and heights that most would drive hours for, where a drive to work is accompanied by a black bear and her cubs. Why am I in such a hurry to get away from a place like this? When our desire to escape is stronger than our ability to appreciate what lies in front of us, our resentment grows stronger,

creating a travel craving that no time abroad can satisfy. Well, I think that my urge to travel shouldn’t come from my inability to appreciate my current surroundings where my completeness is only commensurate with my next trip abroad, because there is nothing mundane, un-exotic or lacking in beauty about my current reality. My desire to travel and to experience other cultures, foods, sights and sound has not diminished. However, the phrase ‘Your Life is a Vacation’ resonates a little stronger in my head.

FRENCH CONNECTION

UN SURVOL DES ORIGINES LATINES DE LA LANGUE FRANÇAISE Claudine St. Cyr-Premont

L

Nature Nurtures, Naturally!

Sanne van der Ros Photo

Sanne van der Ros

Dressed warmly in down jackets and toques, we drift slowly down the Columbia River in our canoe. The full moon appears bright in the early night, setting the snowy mountain tops aglow. The lit up Dogtooth Range shows its sharp edges against the night sky. Lost in thought and wonder, we float quietly through the magical landscape. Suddenly, we hear a rustle in the bushes near shore. We look up just in time to catch a glimpse of three fluffy feathered big horn owls as they scatter off into the darkness. Our hearts sing while cherishing this unique encounter with our local wildlife. Later on, back at home my heart sinks as I hear more discouraging

news about the health of our planet. We are all familiar with the melting glaciers and polar regions, species extinctions, largescale destruction of habitats, pollution and waste disposal issues. Even in our own beautiful Golden we find garbage disposed of at inappropriate places, discover deep tire tracks cutting up fragile alpine areas and feel the effects of air pollution. Why don’t people care more about nature?

Richard Louv suggests that our modern, technology-based world of internet surfing, computer games and watching movies has removed our connection with nature and with this disconnect, we’re losing our health. Let’s spend more time outdoors in nature and nurture our mental, physical and spiritual health. When the natural world is more deeply valued and protected, the health of our earth will benefit too.

In our high-speed and busy lives, it is easy to forget to take a break and head outside for some sacred nature time. In his book Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder,

Let’s get some ‘Vitamin N” and head out in nature! While November can be a dark, dreary month to venture outside, I encourage you to just giv’er. Put on that down jacket and toque

PRIMARY OCCUPATION: Painter of rocks and canvas SECONDARY OCCUPATION: Ceramicist TERTIARY OCCUPATION: Poker player – and a damn good one, too! ATTITUDE TOWARDS LIFE: I believe in being a care taker of the Earth. I am an Earth Warrior. I moved here to Golden in 2007 from living in North Van for 23 years. I loved it there, yet I wanted to be close to nature and it's animals. Here, I can do that. The water is clean and healthy, the air is clear. I enjoy creating and living amongst my acres of land, hiking around the mountains here with my wolf and constant companion, Sheba. My husband and I chose Golden because it always had a special place in my heart after all of the places we've traveled in BC together. PHILOSOPHY: Every day is a precious gift and I do my best to be positive, keep healing and creating a loving home and life to be in for myself.

LOCAL ARTIST

WAYNE PITCHKO LOCAL ARTIST Sarah Jane Osadetz

W

Wayne Pitchko is not what you would expect an artist to be. Growing up, Wayne was an absolute sports fanatic playing hockey and lacrosse. Well educated, he holds two University degrees in the social sciences. A renaissance man, he has tested, traveled and tried the truth – from the times of social change and consciousness. From San Francisco in the height of Haight & Ashbury to days of beat poets witnessed live through cultural pilgrimage to battling the plains of lacrosse on the fields of competition on the West Coast of BC for the New Minster Salmonbellies, this man has withstood adventures. Since spending the last several years in Golden, Wayne has very much come into his own artistry.

Writing was his first love. Then, he picked up a paint brush and coloured his imagination. “The southern Alberta prairies, where I lived with my first wife for a time, really left an imprint on my being. The golden light and open vistas are something that I carry through some of my themes in painting,” Wayne shares, eyes glinting, “I start with a horizon – there's always a horizon in my paintings and I work from there.” With those horizons there is a clarity, a sense of wonder and detail that Wayne depicts. It's nameless yet the details are there. It might be a hint of pink on a sun kissed peak or a texture formed on the valley bottom. His work speaks to the universal seeker, all without words; just bold lines, colours and

subtlety. That subtlety is stark, precise and refined. His abstracts are completely different as they lead the viewer through, inside of and around chaos – bright, intense colours playful presented with strong shapes and bold, contrasting layers. When asked about the difference between words and colour strokes on canvas, Wayne replies, “I find I can write a poem and be totally finished without too much revisiting. Especially haikus. Painting gives me a sense of – oh, what if I tweak this over here and work this colour over there...there is always something that I could continue to work on in my pieces.” Wayne has his work displayed at Eleven 22 restaurant in Golden decorating the walls with the likes

of professional artists Nellie Tobler and David Low. “I've sold several of my paintings at the restaurant and it's a great venue for me. I'm so grateful for the opportunity. Vreni, Nellie's sister and my life partner, is very particular about the work she wants on the walls. She's an architectural designer – very discerning. Luckily, I seem to fit her criteria and I'm happy to say that it's a lucrative venture. People from all over the world visit 1122 and take my work home with them. That's really satisfying.” You can catch Wayne on Facebook with at the very least a haiku here and there, visit 1122 for an art viewing and some great food, or visit Wayne's new website: www. waynepitchkoart.ca

The Gentleman’s Leisure Club of Golden

The BC Craft Brewers has released two new Natural Selections 12 packs for this fall and winter season. Each will feature samples from six different breweries, available in either cans or bottles. It is a great way to try out some of BC’s amazing craft Breweries in one purchase of $24.95.

Nelson After Dark. This easy drinking delicious organic brown ale is delightful, devious and has deep chocolate overtones that highlight this legendary ale. It is the chocolate and dark roasted malt that gives this beer its beautiful colour and lovely flavours.

Tree Groove Session Ale. Groove Session Ale is a smooth tasting, medium bodied ale with subtle spicy notes and a pleasant lingering dry hop bitterness on the finish.

Phillips Bottle Rocket ISA is an India Session Ale packed with a bright, hoppy bitterness sure to ignite your taste buds. Unlike its big cousin IPA, this beer is light in colour and medium bodied but packs a hop blast sure to satisfy even the most seasoned IPA drinker.

I LOVE SCOTCH SCOTCH SCOTCH SCOTCH

Fernie Griz Pale Ale. With a deep amber colour, this bold and refreshing ale blends seven specialty malts. Three hop additions of Perle Cascade, German Tradition and Styrian Hops give this ale a distinctive hop aroma and bitterness, classic to style.

Howe Sound Lager is a version of the Dortmunder style. It is a pale golden lager that is balanced between sweet malt and dry hop flavors. The lager has a clean, dry finish with some mild fruitiness delivered by Hallertau hops and traditional Polish Lublin.

Cannery Naramata Nut Brown rich dark malts are layered in a seamless manner. Fine tuning with a blend of bitter aroma and flavour hops produce an amazingly smooth finish and a lingering taste. This is a full-bodied ale with a rich and gentle flavour.

DOUBLE FUZZ

NOV 29 - THE TAPS

Pat Legare

This Calgary based duo is making a lot of noise. Formed in 2010, Double Fuzz features Jon Whitehead on vocals and guitar and Roland Lowson on drums. Defined as a mix between blues and heavy rock, their originals are getting a lot of attention these days. Jon’s vocals are very edgy and his guitar playing is dirty and loud! In their music, you can hear the sounds of the Black Keys mixed with a little bit of Jack White. For a duo, their sound is huge! Double Fuzz was featured in the line-up for the Golden Sound Festival this past September. After seeing them live at the

Riverhouse, I realized that they remind me of Queens of the Stone Age with songs like “Don’t wanna be bad no more” and “Alone in my city” as great examples of the comparison. Double Fuzz is scheduled to play The Taps on November 29. A $5 cover is a guaranteed great investment for an amazing show. Get ready to be blown away by this great duo…it might get loud. www.facebook.com/DoubleFuzz

DEVON COYOTE

NOV 16 - THE TAPS

Pat Legare On Saturday November 16, The Taps has some high quality entertainment in store for you! First up is Devon Coyote who is no stranger to the locals. Having played some serious venues and festivals throughout his career, Devon is a real crowd pleaser. Whether you have seen him with his old duo, Devon and Kevin, or simply as Devon Coyote; one thing is for sure that he has put a smile on your face. True rock and roll and amazing compositions are Devon’s favourite. I strongly recommend a listen to songs like “Always in the grey” or “Light up my soul”. Devon has shared the stage with many famous artists including Bif Naked, Said the whale, Yukon

Blonde, Current Swell, Emerson Drive and Alex Cuba. Just to name a few. Second up is Defunk from Calgary. Part of a birthday bash for our friend Kyle, Defunk is coming to the Taps to play after Devon Coyote. Defunk plays mostly happy funky beats with a serious blues and swing twist, which are all welcome in my books. In their quest to create a brand new style for everyone to enjoy, Ghettoswing has emerged. It is the combination of big band swing music and hip hop. One thing is for sure, this will be a very interesting night at The Taps. facebook.com/devoncoyote

The Balconies are an amazing rock trio from Ontario. These guys play really hard and Jackie, on lead vocals, will blow you away with a stage presence like no other. Bring earplugs!!

Well known for explosive and distorted lyrics, July Talk reminds me of a heavier version of Tom Waits. Songs like “Guns and ammunition” and “ Let her know” will convince you of the same.

A powerhouse trio with great vocals and a genuine sound. Picture the Ocean for an alternative pop band sound, it is very new and refreshing.

SAID THE WHALE Nich Johansen

NOV 30 - RPAC

A

As one of the more successful bands to come out of the Vancouver music scene in recent years, Said the Whale is no stranger to crosscontinent touring. On November 5, their tour will begin in Fredericton, New Brunswick to promote their latest album, hawaii. The tour will take them west across Canada playing 26 shows, one of which will be at The Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre on November 30 and will be open to all ages. Said the Whale began with Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft in 2007. Friends from high school, the two put out their first EP, Taking Abalonia in 2008 and haven’t looked back since. The band received a big push in 2010 after placing second in the Vancouver radio station Peak FM’s annual Peak Performance Project. With their winnings, they were able to tour the United States in the spring of 2011 which was documented in

the CBC documentary, Winning America. It was a big year for the group as they also took home the Juno award for New Group of the Year. Their 2013 release, hawaiii, is their fourth full length studio album. Said the Whale has had a few lineup changes since their conception but their current iteration of Spencer Schoening on drums, Nathan Shaw on bass and Jaycelyn Brown on keyboards, along with Ben and Tyler on vocals and guitar has been together since 2011. Said the Whale is known for their upbeat indie-pop that will have the people at the RPAC out of their seats dancing. Ben might just be one of the friendliest people in music, so make sure you swing by their merch stand after the show for a chat. Tickets for the Revelstoke show can be found at ArtFirst! in downtown Revelstoke or at the Chamber of Commerce for $10. Barring a sell-out, tickets at the door will be $15.

A healthy smile is a happy smile.

THOR: REVIEW SLAMMIN' BACK SEAN TONELLI

W

With Thor slamming back into theatres this November with Thor: The Dark World, it felt like the perfect time to share a few of the must-have books featuring everyone’s favourite thunder god. WALTER SIMONSON’S THOR OMNIBUS This massive tome is the Thor bible. Simonson was the writer of Thor for decades and is responsible for making Thor, well, Thor! This set may cost a pretty penny but it’s worth every cent. It will always be remembered as the definitive Thor and will probably never be topped. THOR: GOD OF THUNDER VOL. 1 & 2 Last year when Marvel rebooted their universe, all eyes were on Jason Aaron and his tale of the three Thors. An ambitious journey through time, Thor must join forces with past and future self to stop G’orr the God Butcher who has been slaying gods across the universe. A personal favourite of mine and probably the most epic

tale you will ever read. AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED: THOR The threat of Ragnarok, which foretells the death of the Norse gods and the apocalypse, has always loomed heavy in the Marvel U, that is until writer Michael Avon Oeming dropped Armageddon right on our heroes heads. Serving as a love letter to the cyclical nature of the comic world, this massive event sees Thor question his very existence. Should Thor stop the upcoming apocalypse? Or is it his destiny to bring about the end of days? LOKI Tom Hiddleston’s portrayl of Loki, Thor’s mischievous brother, is so iconic that fans have been clamouring for a spin-off. Since there are clearly a lot of Loki fans out there they, and you, should check out this ‘what if’ tale of Loki’s victory over Asgard and the pain and regret that follows his familial betrayal.

PICK YOUR BATTLES Joel Olson

Even though it may not seem like it, the Christmas season is just around the corner bringing with it a host of activities and emotions. For many, the holidays can be a time of tremendous stress as Christmas expenses often far exceeds your regular budget. For others, Christmas becomes a time to withdraw from reason and to spend the rest of the eleven months paying off the magical debt you have acquired. If you’re wondering how to keep your financial sanity, here are a few tips:

1. SAVE FOR CHRISTMAS ALL YEAR LONG. It’s not that we can’t afford Christmas, it’s that we don’t plan for Christmas. An extra few thousand dollars in one month will cause a serious dent in your budget but if you save $200 a month for the entire year, your Christmas spending won’t seem that bad. It might seem a little inconvenient but by saving a little over an extended period of time it will enable you to keep away from the debt load that people incur with repetitive Christmases of overspending.

www. specialolympics.bc.ca Facebook specialolympicsbc Twitter @sobcsociety

2. GIFTS ARE NOT EVERYTHING.

3. PICK YOUR PARTY.

Yes, you have probably heard this already and even repeated it to your kids but think about how many gifts you feel obligated to give. Surely, it is a season to be generous but maybe we give gifts because we feel that we have to or give more than we should. Also, Christmas is a time we can become generous with our most valuable asset, time. Think about giving time before gifts.

Christmas can be a busy time for the amount of get-togethers we are invited to attend. At each party, there are usually many temptations where we can spend money. A lot of time, we spend this money without realizing it. Don’t be afraid to say no to some events that you don’t have time for and you’ll be glad to have the money you were able to save. Christmas is one of the best times of year. Use this time to spend time with family and friends and not to put your financial health at risk.

COBRA POSE

C

Cobra, or Bhujangasana in Sanskrit is a Chest-Opener or Back-Bend. As such, it is a wonderful pose for expanding the shoulder area, stretching the pectoral muscles in the front of your chest and stretching the entire front of the body. It is also a great pose for the lower back and for boosting confidence. Another thing I like about Cobra is that it helps you

connect with your core and with the energy that resides at the bottom of your belly. I recommend this pose to people with lower back issues, to women with menstrual cramps and discomfort in the abdominal area, to people with tight shoulders and chest and to anyone who’s looking for a boost to their confidence. Like any other back bend, this pose will

help you open the heart and put a smile on your face! Lie down on your belly with your forehead on the floor. Place your palms underneath your shoulders and bring the elbows close to the body. Roll your shoulders back and feel the shoulder blades sliding down your spine. Notice the place in your lower belly between your pubic bone and your belly button. Imagine you are trying to kiss the floor with that spot – press it down into the ground. Stretch your legs straight behind you about hip width-apart or closer, if you feel comfortable with that. Stretch your toes and ground the tops of your feet into the ground. Tuck your tailbone in. With an inhale, lift your chest off the

floor keeping the elbows close to the body. If your back feels good, keep lifting the chest higher, use your hands to push off the floor a bit more and keep rolling the shoulders back. Keep lifting your heart up and forward. You might want to look up and tilt your head back but only if that feels comfortable with your neck. Keep your thighs and pubic bone on the floor. Stay for up to five breaths and then relax your chest down and straighten your arms by your body. Rest for a few breaths, and then come into Child’s Pose for a few breaths. ADVENTURES IN PARENTING: TALES OF A NOT-SO-SUPER, MOSTLY JUST AVERAGE MOM. Alison Biles

O

sleep?

Once upon a time, well actually a few years ago, in a land not too far away, Field to be exact lived a beautiful princess or more accurately a very tired and frazzled mother and her two adorable, or should I say commanding children. The mother did not want glass slippers as her down Mountain Equipment Co-Op booties were much more comfortable. She certainly was not about to grow her hair to a length that would entice a prince to climb up and save her. She did not need a prince to wake her with a kiss as her mostly lovely children took care of that. They woke her daily nightly on the hour every hour all of the time! What this mother needed was sleep. What

she needed was a wicked fairy to curse her into a magical sleep, one that even the loudest of cries from her children could not awaken her from. One, which if lasted not for one hundred years would be at least a good solid week of blissful uninterrupted sleep. At that point even one night would have been welcomed. There was no wicked fairy. Parenting is not a fairytale. Sure there were magical moments, smiles, cuddles, love and even occasionally sleep. But looking back on those bleary eyed, tired till your bones hurt days, a fairy tale is not what comes to mind. My son, Captain Safety, recently and astutely wondered why I have so

“MOST UNIQUE

much energy now. He wondered why I don’t lie on the couch all of the time desperately trying to nap between the incessant requests for snacks and stories: the constant bombardment by my children while I tried to sleep. The answer is simple now that my children are older. Now every night when I put them to bed they go to sleep and stay asleep. Each night I now have hours of blissful uninterrupted sleep and feel fantastic. In fact, I feel like a super hero. With a good night‘s sleep I can do anything. Even on the nights when I stay up way too late and have way too much fun of my own choosing I am a fully functioning adult the next day. I am happy in the knowledge

that the next night, or any night that I choose, my quiet room with my comfortable bed awaits me, no interruptions. For the parents out there not sleeping, those that have no fairy, good or bad, who have no prince or princess to help them through their sleepless stories and whose partner has magically been transformed into an ogre through lack of sleep; know that once upon a time in a land maybe only as far as your bedroom, you will sleep. The curse will be broken, you will feel rested and energized and you and your partner will transform back into the prince or princess you remember and will live happily ever after.

I was not the only one to be sent out, alone, just the ship and I, there were so many of us, unleashed on the unsuspecting Galaxy but we were so very insignificant. The ship- I was told it was minebut I was just the pilot, just an extension of Humanity’s long arms, our need to conquest, our need to hold everything and study it- I was supposed to fill that. The ship would become a house but never a home. I watched Earth spin away, past Mars, past Jupiter, slung around, any extra speed I could get without firing the engines- I would follow Voyager II out of our solar system until Sol was just another star and lost all meaning. We all left, in a long schedule that lasted weeks, all in a slight change of course from Earth that would magnify the further we left our blue planet. I imagined us like tiny fireflies in the

night, since it was always night out here, escaping a jar unable to grasp the distances we would travel nor the places we would see. One can only prepare so much for the alien; the unknown, that place with fear and doubt, even after years of training, for we-I- would be solitary the whole way. I would wake years later but would not be older and everyone I knew on Earth would be dead and I would still be young. That troubled me and for a long time as I floated out into the Oort cloud, I could not escape and I did not know if I would ever return and I sighed, it was for the best I did not. “Alpha Centari up ahead.” I stared out the viewscreen, they were so yellow and so beautiful and I was the first person to see it

HITCH HIKING GUIDE TO EAST KOOTENAYS

Matty Chappy

T

Matty Chappy Photo

There are many types of rambling travellers out there these days. There are the lost and tormented souls that find their homes on the open road, Europeans who want to experience the very essence of Canada and the people like me; adventurers who love the thrill of not knowing what will happen in a day of travelling. Though hitchhiking often has a bad reputation, it can be a very reliable way of getting from point A to point B, but most people will just drive by and silently envy the freedom of the leather tramp.

From my experience, hitching in the East Kootenays has been very pleasant and relatively easy. The following are some tricks of the trade that I have picked up along the road ensuring that you get to your destination faster: 1. Make a sign to the next little town down the road (i.e. if departing from Invermere make a sign for Radium even if your destination is Golden). This will allow drivers comfort in knowing you will be getting out of their car soon.

2. Walk to a pull out or dirt road intersection with a turning lane. Not only does it allow for a safe spot for cars to pick you up, it also gives you room to hide from transport trucks, rocks, wind and debris as all have the potential to cause injury. 3. Be prepared. Have a back pack with warm clothes as the valley has many changes in elevation and weather especially through Field and Lake Louise. Also a backpack represents responsibility to the drivers. Never pick up a hitcher without a back pack; it means they have nothing to lose.

4. Lastly, just because a person stops, it does not mean you have to get in. Often people who pick up hitchers are lonely on the road and just want someone to talk to. I have also seen many intoxicated drivers wanting to have a beer with someone on a long trip. Depending on the amount of danger you are looking for, it is ultimately your choice. A safer way to travel the 93/95 is the community bus that runs from Golden to Cranbrook. For only $5.00 round trip you can travel safely but may not quench the thirst of your wanderlust.

TRAIL BUILDING BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE Golden Cycling Club

A

A biking community, like a bike, needs to be well-tuned and have all the parts working seamlessly together to get the most mileage and have the most fun. With that in mind, it is time to consider trail maintenance etiquette. This is a big topic and the purpose of this article is not to be an exhaustive survey. Instead it is a hodgepodge of whatever ideas pop up first. First, if every rider takes but a moment on every ride to move a rock, snap a low branch or drag a log off the path, then trail maintenance is an ongoing effort and fewer areas develop into problems. When you are waiting for a friend taking a breather or notice something dangerous, take a minute to improve the trail. This is like lubing the chain of collective experience. The system runs smoothly and your pride soars with the angels. Second, when a new trail is freshly built, it tends to be soft. Also, if built well, it should shed water to the downhill side. How riders can help sustain the trail in the early stages is to ride on the downhill side of the trail to try to pack down the trail evenly across its width. Otherwise, a depressed trench develops in the middle of the trail which then catches and directs rain water down the trail

eventually turning the trail into a ditch. Riding on the edge is like truing the wheels of community spirit and is, of course, quite exhilarating. Third, all volunteer efforts at trail maintenance are encouraged by the club. Contact us to get access to tools, and importantly, be sure to log your hours on www. goldencyclingclub.com. Showing potential grant committees how many volunteer hours the community puts into the trails significantly helps influence their award decisions. Adding your hours to the group total is like tightening the headset of universal joy. Be that wrench. The Golden Cycling Club is a nonprofit organization that promotes and improves cycling in Golden and the surrounding area. With the support of volunteers and paid trail crews the Golden Cycling Club improves and maintains the CBT, Moonraker, Mt. 7 and Mountain Shadows trail networks. The Club relies on membership dues, donations and grant funding to ensure these fantastic outdoor facilities are available for all to enjoy!

LOCAL LOVE

BETTY RIDES LOOKING FOR A FRIEND Betty Rides

I

I talk a lot about relationships between lovers but rarely do I shed light on the relationships formed between friends. Good friends are hard to find and I will never settle. For some, I can be a bit of an acquired taste: I hate small talk, I don’t enjoy hearing others gape over themselves and their achievements, I enjoy being in comfortable surroundings without feeling I’m missing out on something, I don’t enjoy being around narrow minded people. This list may sound petty but to be frank, I don’t care. I don’t care if the expression on my face gives off the impression that I’m bored, not interested, unimpressed or impatient. I’ve reached an age where I realize that the most important relationships I treasure are the ones that involved no effort to obtain and none to maintain. I don’t want to have to

try to be anyone’s friend because friendship should be easy. On my recent journey home I experienced something one can only experience when surrounded by jealous, small-minded people. To make a long story short, my little sister is getting married in January and a bachelorette party was planned; we danced, we drank, we had a good time and then one person went and killed the buzz. My presence and her insecurities were the trigger as she feared that my sister’s attention would never be on her and only on me. In the end, she so boldly called me an ignorant bitch, not to my face but loud enough for me to hear and wouldn’t back it up when I asked if she’d like to discuss her feelings. What I want to know is, how can you call yourself a good friend and bridesmaid when you

went out of your way to be nasty and ruin what was supposed to be such an exciting, last hoorah before my sister’s wedding? And what I want to say is, shame on you! Unfortunately for my sister, she will never be rid of this girl. They are both intertwined between friends and lovers and truth be known, they have a long history together and my sister is the type of person who can forgive and forget. Obviously we don’t carry the same forgiveness gene as I’m already plotting the week we’ll all be spending together in Mexico for the January nuptials. I am not a spiteful person but I will never cower down to someone whose own ignorance hurts me or someone I care about. I had a funny thought recently,

people put out ads for lovers but does anyone put them out for friends? This is what mine would read: Looking for a friend; creeps need not apply as I am actually just looking for a friend. I’d like someone to do nothing with; have a laugh, a cry, share secrets and keep them. This friend should have my back regardless of how ridiculous I may sound at times. You definitely can’t flirt with my boyfriend and you have to be very open-minded. I may say things that are inappropriate if you’re passionate about religion, homophobia or lack compassion for carbon footprints and vegetarianism. If you’d like to answer my ad or just want to gab, contact me at bettyrides@localtownie.com.

Capricorn – You don’t read Quantum Physics but you’re more involved in the subatomic particle world than you think, and also very cosmopolitan. The fungus between your toes contains a microscopic metropolis on the scale of New York City. Aquarius – You suddenly strike it rich in China this month when you invent a soup from dead Kokanees found in the Blaeberry River. Pisces – Stay high but lay low this month. Cancer – Love finds your feet in the way of an unexpected pedicure this month and heels the broken part of your heart from the ground up. Leo – Make a move on your Doctor this month to test his or her ethical standards. Don’t let Doctor Strangelove get away with any weird science when it comes to your health. Virgo – Although you are usually on the receiving end of things, a shift in the Universal Equilibrium calls for you to suddenly dish it out. Find the nearest Samurai sword and get ready for battle, the future of Sushi Trains is in your hands.
