Welcome to the second issue of the Directive! This semester, we focused on a topic we think represents the diverse expression of our student body, music. Music is something that connects our community, it allows us to express
ourselves, helps us to find comfort, joy, or motivation, and brings us together. Our magazine covers a variety of topics, from local concerts and student artists, to Bowie’s favorite songs. We hope that you enjoy issue two!
We would like to give a special thank you to the Dispatch leadership team, for supporting and inspiring our second issue.

WATERLOO RECORDS
Located on 600N Lamar Blvd. Austin, TX
Waterloo Records located on 600N Lamar Blvd. has an awesome atmosphere and an amazing place to buy some of your all time favorite records. One thing about it is that it can be on a tad expensive, but overall, I think its worth it! It also all depends on what you are looking for when you enter the shop. Waterloo offers a ton of deals and discounts, for example they have CD sales, mystery grab bags for $5, metal vinyl clearance sale 33-66% off, $1 vinyls, and used vinyls and CD’s for even cheaper. So, Waterloo records has more affordable options for everyone there as well. It’s a fun place to go with friends and share your taste and passion for music with them. With Valentines Day approaching you can also get different gifts for others, Waterloo has a section of little nick nacks that contain fun things like socks, glasses, stickers, magnets, journals, bags, patches, guitar picks, and shirts. If you aren’t looking for any records, CDs, movies and want to still make a purchase you can spend your cash on these smaller, but still fun, trinkets. Overall, Waterloo Records is a great record store and provides all the music and music culture you need.
broken spoke
3201 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX
Every week from Tuesday through Saturday, some of Texas’ finest country bands perform beneath the notoriously low ceiling in the dance hall, their music guiding hordes of people in endless boot-scooting loops across the open dance floor.
The Broken Spoke was established by James White and his wife Anneta White in 1964 to preserve the trademark Texan culture in an ever-growing city.
“I don’t really like South Lamar like it is today,” James said in an Austin American Statesman interview. “There are too many apartments, and it’s getting too commercialized.”
Terri White, James’ and Annetta’s daughter, is the Spoke’s owner after her father’s passing in early 2021. Despite her late age, Terri is known for her vibrant energy, working as the dance instructor at her establishment for nearly her entire life.
“My daughter said, ‘you’re a hippie, flower child freak,’” Terri said, “I said. ‘Kiss my a** conservative b***h!’”
Throughout the Broken Spokes’ lifetime, dozens of bands have performed on the stage, creating the lively ambiance that people have come to expect from the dance hall. The Wagoneers, The Pleasant Valley Boys, and famous country artists such as Dale Watson
have been loyal to the Spoke, traveling to Austin for an opportunity to perform for an enthusiastic crowd.
Some of the biggest country music stars to grace the halls have been Willie Nelson, George Strait, and Dolly Parton. The venue includes a ‘Hall of Fame’ lined with photos of artists performing at the Spoke.
The Broken Spoke has been a true testament to the abilities of a family to retain the historical background and significance of a single building, an accomplishment that has resonated with kids and adults throughout the expanding city of Austin Texas. STORY BY:

MUSIC FESTIVAL
Every year the people of Austin, Texas, and many other areas gather for the annual music festival, Austin City Limits (ACL). ACL is a festival held annually on October’s first and second weekends. This festival, located on Barton Springs Rd. at Zilker Park, is no run-of-the-mill event, though ACL has hosted many famous artists since its creation in 2002. Some of these artists include Paul McCartney in 2018, Willie Nelson in 2016, Kendrick Lamar in 2016, and countless others. At this year’s festival, held October 7-10 and 13-16, many also watched well-known artists perform, including Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Paramore, SZA, Conan Gray, and many others. Over the last few years, many annual attendees of ACL might have noticed the increase in crowds, especially following the pandemic, which had caused ACL to cancel their 2020 festival.
If you have never visited ACL but are looking to go in the future, there are a few things you should know before going. First, the parking when leaving and arriving at the festival can be troublesome, so it’s good to plan how you are getting there, who you are going with, and where you will park or get picked up and dropped off. Next, getting into the festivals, there is often an extensive line at the main entrance on Barton Springs Road, but sometimes there are fewer crowds if you go through the back entrance, which many people need to remember. A lot of the time, the case will be that both entries are crowded, making it reasonable to arrive early and plan for the crowds, so you can see all the performers you want to see. Whether it is your first or 20th time attending ACL, there are enough genres, artists, and art to appeal to anyone.
STORY BY: Emily LoeweINSIDE: ACL
ENTERING THE FESTIVAL:
While most people who went to ACL could purchase their tickets ahead of time from the website, aclfest.com, or other resale sites, senior Angela Le was able to secure a last-minute deal of a lifetime. “I could not believe my eyes. I could not believe my life. At that moment, it felt like my prayers were being answered.” On Sunday of weekend two at ACL, Le arrived at the festival around 7 p.m. without a plan but with high hopes of getting into the festival. When she arrived, she “ran to the first person [she] saw selling tickets to tried and get one. At first he told [them] that he had two VIP tickets for $100 each,” but after Le explained they didn’t have that much, she and her friend were able to secure the tickets for half the price. After she verified the tickets and got into the festival, they “ran to the VIP section to see Red Hot Chili Peppers” and got an unforgettable view of the performance.
THE SILENT DISCO:
The silent disco, held annually at ACL, is an experience “you don’t realize you have until it’s gone.” Junior Marley Anthony, who attended ACL on weekends one and two, has participated in the silent disco every year at Austin City Limits. Still, due to this festival’s increasing crowds and popularity, lines can be brutal for anything, especially the silent disco. “You forget how fun it is until you go, but if you aren’t waiting for the line to open, or you leave then decide to get back in line, you’re not going back.” Anthony dealt with the crowds by taking pictures with her friends and arriving early. “I’ve only ever seen the silent disco at ACL, never anywhere else, so it’s a once-a-year thing for me, but a concert? you can find a concert anywhere,” Anthony said. ACL PERFORMERS:
Many artists played at this year’s Austin City Limits, and everyone had their favorites, but along with that, their different experiences seeing them. Bowie senior Noah Fisher got to experience one of his favorite artists at ACL this year and, in return, got a great experience. “When I first got into ACL, we practically ran to Omar Apollo’s stage and just barreled our way to the front… we ended up getting pretty close, only like two people were in front of us.” He also explained the crowd, saying, “The vibe was just great in general; even some of the people who didn’t know his music was still enjoying it and having a good time. I feel he was one of the best performers that weekend and in the lineup in general,” Fisher said. PHOTO BY: Emily

Live music is an integral part of Austin culture, dubbed the “Live music capital of the world.” But Austin didn’t earn this name for nothing, with the countless venues scattered all over town, to the annual Austin City Limits, Austin, has plenty to offer regarding its access to live music. Austin has been known for its eccentric art, music, and people for decades but the city was only given its nickname in 1991 when research showed that Austin had the most concert venues per capita. Since then the city has grown at an exceptional pace, but so has it’s music and the community within it. Now, more than ever the live music in Austin is thriving and many people who live here, including some students at Bowie, seem to embrace it. Over 2022 there were countless concerts held in Austin preforming at smaller venues such as Emos or Stubbs or even much bigger theaters such as the Moody Center and the Long Center. So whether your going to see your favorite band, or just looking to hear some good live music, Austin is the place to be.

“I thought It was going to be a lot more relaxed,” senior Dylan Duncan said, who attended the Steve Lacy concert back in October. “But the audience was kind of crazy. Everyone pushed a lot. There was one point where he left the stage, but eventually came back and started playing Dark Red, which is one of his popular songs. It was really good.” PHOTO BY: Angela Le

Guest EARTHBANG joined Gorrilaz on stage last September in the Moody Theater. The band has four members all bearing an animated avatar and persona giving the audience a surprise guest. “There was a lot of people around us,” junior Katy Lamm said. “It was fun to be enjoying it with everyone. I was really excited because I’ve liked Gorrilaz since elementary school.” PHOTO BY: Katy Lamm

“When I actually went into the concert I’d already missed four songs and right as I was walking in he started playing Tiny Dancer,” senior Ebaha Sample said. “I was under the impression that I missed the concert since I was still waiting outside. I could hear it going on outside, but I was still waiting in line. It was super understaffed. As I walked in he was playing Tiny Dancer and I just started profusely crying and it was very overwhelming. I remember running through the crowd trying to see, but also trying to enjoy the concert. I looked like a lost child since I ran away from my mom. I just couldn’t miss it. That was my favorite part,” senior Eba Sample said.
LIVE MUSIC CLUB
The Live Music Club is made up of four bands who each take half of the practice time on alternating days. The Club is sponsored by AP Music Theory teacher Randy Cantu and Assistant Band Director Jennifer Hanford. Because this is a student run club, there is limited interaction between students and the sponsors beyond organizing events.
Sophomore John Mahon plays the drums at practice while Spunik, helps him keep rhythm. Mahon plays drums in the third band. Even though the people in the Live Music Club are in different bands, they practice together and help fill in for others when they are not able to make practices. They coordinate through Remind. If you want to join the Live Music Club you can email one of the teacher sponsors and you can sign up for the Remind through the link in Live Music Club’s Instagram bio.
The Formality, an organized band at Bowie, plays an original song at the Live Music Clubs performance. The Formality is not a part of the Live Music Club but agreed to play at the concert. The band is made up of four members: Kyan Blacklock, Jeremy Frey, Richie, and Benicio Arce, all of whom are seniors. The band has played several gigs around town and recently released their first single “104 (blind love)” that came out December 9.

“It sounds like something you’d hear at a party”
SauceWrld’s most popular track on Spotify with 52,946 listens. The song is about two and half minutes long. It starts with a quiet keyboard tune and eerie sound for about 30 seconds. The lyrics start after a rapid-fire sound, and share the title of the song with the lyric “ay, you don’t want static, I got my lighting and my thunder.” The song mentions lots of political topics, trends, movies, and famous rappers. A deep bass is present in the background behind fast pace lyrics. The song ends with repeated lyrics from the intro. REVIEW BY:

SauceWrld’s most popular track on Apple Music “Gamble” rings in at just over two minutes long. The main chorus is “Life’s a gamble, I’m cashin with my chips.” The anthem hits on the high-life stacks of cash and fast cars. A contrast to Bowie life of dreary concrete halls and parking garage wars. The song uses a myriad of expletives all relating to the songs main theme of expensive activities and girls.

“Sounds like a Christmas Carol”
“Cartoon”, another popular SauceWrld track dives right into a heavy bass-line accompanied by abundance of crisp 808’s complimenting the deep hitting bass perfectly. Musically this song differs from SauceWrld’s usual backing track but is lyrically similar to the rest of his work. Cartoon’s main chorus is “It’s a fake world we all livin’ in a cartoon.” Seemingly a metaphor for the fast pace world of rap music, or perhaps more of a storyline created by the high school student behind SauceWrld.
REVIEW BY: Savannah LinscombUPCOMING HIGH SCHOOL RAPPERS
SauceWrld, an anonymous student rapper at Bowie, is unlike anything the school has seen. He is currently a junior and started releasing his music last year. To the demise of assistant principals and admins alike, SauceWrld has been known to host concerts in bathrooms, lighting the mood with students’ flashlights. These concerts have been known to be quite rowdy and even dangerous when upwards of 50 students cram into the hall bathrooms to listen to SauceWrld’s tracks.
The upcoming rapper pulls inspiration from many famous rappers. “Mainly JuiceWrld, there’s like other rappers that I take

step into a more professional direction “I started making it for fun, like in quarantine, but I started taking it seriously on my birthday in 2021. So my parents got me real equipment and stuff,” SauceWrld said. Quarantine served as a time for people to explore their creativity in many different ways, “It was during quarantine because I was really bored. I didn’t pay attention during online school, and I listened to a lot of emo music,” SauceWrld said. This allowed him to become a Bowie legend who will be remembered for years. STORY BY: Savannah

It took a very long time to figure out a our band name. we had the initial name “bone-Air” (You get it) then after jamming for a few months , we needed a change and ended up with “The Two LIps” that stuck for our first concert but we decided that we just didn’t like it. Then, Jeremy Frey, our guitarist mentioned the formality and we all liked it. The formality Band

Our first single 104 (Blind love) started out as four notes that were made by our singer/bassist. From there, one of our guitarists made full chords, and then we got the rhythm down. we started with the first verse, then we had a little runway to the second verse and made a bridge. 104 is a very good, very full song. it’s just so simple but i think thats what gives it its charm and makes it so good. ”The formality Band

David Bowie
There hasn’t been a time since his come up that David Bowie has been out of the cultural consciousness. Even in death, Bowie influences new and old artists, as his disruption to the music industry can never truly be reversed. It’s hard to do anything subversive or “alien” without influences being traced back to the beloved glam-rock superstar. He’s a constant influence and reference point in alternative culture, so much so that our fascination has continued well after his death. Just this past year, a documentary came out about Bowie, showing unseen footage from his life and insight into his creative process. Each album plunges into a whole new world- a universe with different personas, styles, sounds and stories. Bowie sings tales of characters whom we empathize and identify with despite being so different from us, From a lost, space-exploring astronaut (Major Tom) to an androgynous, alien rockstar (Ziggy Stardust). Bowie’s ability to create an immersive, story-driven world in just an album was absolutely revolutionary, and his dedication to emulating his personas took it to a whole other level. The idea of a concept album really grew wings with Bowie’s contributions, and now, artists from My Chemical Romance to Kendrick Lamar have used this style of creating characters and conceptual album writing. People’s continued intrigue in Bowie shows that true innovators will keep on compelling and entertaining well after their death, and artists will continue to be inspired by Bowie as long as he’s remembered.
