Band wins 67th consecutive UIL top marching honor

T

he Longview High School Lobo Band has earned a first division rating from the entire judging panel at Stephen F. Austin University to bring home its 67th consecutive “superior” University Interscholastic League marching contest rating. With the top honor, the Big Green Marching Machine maintains the state record for consecutive superior ratings in a state contest. Director of Bands Louis Robinett said LHS has been ranked first division since the inception of the UIL. “Our band continues to grow each year, and our students are rising to keep the tradition of excellence that comes with this marching band,” he said. The Longview High School Lobo Band specializes in military style marching that has distinguished them from other bands and has been a local tradition for more than 80 years. The 2016-17 band has more than 300 members and is the largest band in school history.

th

In addition to the various group events, Longview High School band members compete at UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest and also audition for The Texas Music Educators Region, Area and State bands. Tommy Moore, Tim Drayton, Jessica Philippus, and Arrie Moore also direct the Longview High School Lobo Band. Robinett said in order to compete, band students must be academically eligible according to TEA and UIL rules. With 300 members in the band, Robinett expressed pride in his students not only remaining academically eligible but excelling in the classroom as well. “The band students and staff would like to thank the Administration, teachers, and band boosters for their continued support,” he added. “This support is a main factor in the success of the Longview band program. The Lobo Band is just another of the many reasons to be proud of LISD.”

Five early graduates receive diplomas

It may not have had the usual “pomp and circumstance” of the end of year graduation ceremony, but the diplomas presented this week to five Longview Early Graduation High School students are just as special. Tuesday night during the Longview ISD trustees meeting, students Mason Wright, Cammie Long, Brianna Davis, Justin Burris, Lilianna Arredondo were recognized by Principal Kristi Means. “It is an honor to be a part of this life-changing ceremony,” said

Means. “This graduation class is composed of respectable and dedicated students. They have truly been a pleasure. It is my hope they continue on with the goals and dreams they have set for themselves.” Lilianna Arredondo plans to immediately enter the workforce and attend college in the future. Justin Burrus transferred to Longview from California. He plans to pursue an Associate’s Degree in Computer Networking at Kilgore College.

ongview Lobo football players visited all seven LISD elementary schools on Oct. 5 to promote National Bullying Prevention Month. The team split up and headed to the campuses to discuss what bullying is and the effects it has on people’s lives. “It was incredible to see how passionate these football players were about bullying prevention,” said district spokeswoman Sarah LeBus. “The Lobos are celebrities to these kids and when they were told that you can’t have bullies on a team because it takes teamwork, it made sense to them.” Each campus has been made aware that Oct. 19 is Unity Day and was encouraged to wear orange. However, each campus held separate activities to address bullying prevention throughout the month. LeBus added that the football players made a concerted effort to reach out to the younger students “Bullying starts to effect children at a very early age and they do not realize the damage it can do to someone,” said LeBus. “Many cuts go deep and remain with a person into adulthood and shape who they are. It is important for students to understand not only the effect bullying has on others, but also how to stand up for others that are bullied.” Earlier this year LISD requested a proclamation from Texas Governor Gregg Abbott. In response Abbott proclaimed October 2016 as Bullying Prevention Month in the state of Texas. “We hope that schools across the nation take advantage of this month and promote bullying prevention in every school across the country,” LeBus said.

OPINION

What are you thankful for Lobos? By Mayor Andy Mack

Dear Lobos,

We are approaching one of my favorite times of the year – the holidays. And not just any holiday, Thanksgiving. Where we as a country, take time out from all the things that we do and we give thanks. Why do we do this? In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. Thanksgiving has been celebrated as a Federal holiday every year since 1863, when during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a National Day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our Beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens” to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Today, our Thanksgiving is the 4th Thursday of November which was set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 and approved by Congress in 1941. So, why do we continue to celebrate Thanksgiving in our country? Why do we take a day out of our work week to focus on thankfulness? In my opinion, we do this because we have so much to be thankful for. What do we have to be thankful for in our country? Let’s start at the top. First, we are thankful for freedom and that encompasses so many things: freedom of speech, religion, choice and oppression. We have democracy where the citizens control the government versus other countries that are governed by socialism, dictators, kings or rulers. We also should be

thankful that we have the strongest military in the free world to protect us and others who are unable to protect themselves. In our community we also have a lot to be thankful for. We live in a great city with great people. Neighbors who care about each other. Police and fire who risk their lives for us. Teachers who educate us. A medical community which takes care of us. We are a growing community with a strong economy even in down times. Which has been proven over the last 18 months as over $150 million dollars has been invested in our community through new businesses, restaurants and development. We are blessed to have 645 new jobs coming to town which will help citizens who are looking for employment to be able to provide for their families. We are blessed to have great parks and sources of entertainment which improve our quality of life. And a host of non-profit organizations which serve those in our community who need serving. We are blessed to have a community of people who are selfless, have serving hearts for others, who put others first and who go out of their way to bring a smile to someone else. This is the community that I am thankful for. In my position as Mayor, I am fortunate to have a vantage point for seeing great acts of kindness that I was unable to see as easily when I was a resident. I will be forever grateful for the lessons you all have taught me on generosity. This past year I have watched our community rally behind and support many causes. You have donated

your hard earned money to purchase K-9 vests for our police dogs, body cameras for our law enforcement and handicap swings in our city parks for children confined to wheelchairs. I would not have believed these things possible had I not seen people from all walks of life come together to help other folks here in Longview. We are very blessed as a community to have one another. Personally, of course, I have many things to be thankful for – as I am sure you do as well. Two of my children have moved home to Longview to begin their professional careers and we will soon be adding to our family with a wonderful sonin-law. I am thankful that my son is continuing his education in Houston with hopes he will be joining my surgical practice in a few years. I am also thankful that I have parents that raised me with a strong value system. I am thankful for my two brothers, my best friends, which are unconditionally behind me at all times. I am blessed to have a wife who sticks beside me through better or worse. I am thankful that I have been given the ability to help others through my professional life. I am extremely blessed to have wonderful friends who are there through thick and thin. I have blessings that I do not deserve and that I could never earn. And I am thankful for my faith and my belief in My Savior – where all my blessings come from. But I am extremely blessed to have been elected as your Mayor. The trust that you have placed in me, the encouragement that you give me, the prayers that you offer on my behalf, have enriched

Financial aid for college: Where do I begin?

State/Federal Grants & Scholarships:

Grants are provided by the State of Texas and the U.S. Department of Education (federal grants). These forms of financial aid do not have to be repaid. There are also numerous scholarships available (also do not have to be repaid) through colleges/universities and private sources. Scholarship applications are available from the KC Financial Aid Office or from high school counselors. Some grants and scholarships, however, require the student to maintain a certain grade point average (GPA) or take certain courses. Most grants are also awarded on the basis of financial need. The most popular type of grant is a Pell grant. Pell Grants are

awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or professional degree and who have exceptional financial need. There are many other criteria for a Pell grant. The financial aid office at the college you apply with will determine your eligibility for a Pell grant. For more information on state or federal grants and/or scholarships, visit www.kilgore.edu/financial-aid. You can visit www.collegeforalltexans to search for available scholarships and view aid programs.

Loans:

Loans are also provided by the U.S. Department of Education (these DO have to be paid back over time with interest). It’s important to remember that student loans must be repaid even if your financial circumstances become difficult. Loans can’t be canceled because you didn’t get the job you expected, and they can’t be canceled because you didn’t complete your education. For information on different types of loans visit www.kilgore.edu/loans.

Financial aid for veterans:

If you’ve served in the Armed Forces, we welcome you to learn about special financial aid opportunities specifically for you. The state of Texas provides several veteran benefits. KC is proud to have been named to the “Military Friendly Schools” list four consecutive years by Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life. We look forward to serving those who so bravely served us. For more information on veterans benefits at KC visit www. kilgore.edu/veterans.

So what should I do first?

The first thing to do is to get a FSA ID by visiting this website: https://fsaid.ed.gov. The FSA ID is your electronic signature for the Department of Education and is required to complete your online FAFSA. If you are under 24 years of age, you are considered a dependent of your parent (s) by the Department of Education and your parents must have their

Need help filling out the FAFSA?

You’re invited to two free Saturday help seminars at Kilgore College called the FAFSA Help Campaign. This FAFSA Help Campaign is designed to help both parents and students fill out the FAFSA application (this service is absolutely free). It is advisable for both parents and students to come in order to complete the application if they are dependent students (students under 24 years of age). They will need to have filed the 2015 Tax Return and should bring their Tax Transcript or let the financial aid professionals know if they have a special situation. The FAFSA Help Campaign will be held on the Kilgore campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, and on the KC-Longview campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. If you cannot make it to our FAFSA Help Campaign seminars and still need help filling out the FAFSA, you’re welcome to speak with our highly trained financial aid staff by calling 903-983-8211. Students can also call 1-800-4-FED-AID for more information on aid programs and help filling out the FAFSA. We understand that financial aid options can become complicated, but I hope you’ll give us a call if you have any questions. We want to make the process as easy as possible. To contact the financial aid department at Kilgore College, call 903-983-8211 or email us at finaid@kilgore.edu. Give us a call or stop by one of our campuses so we can show you how your future starts here! — Dr. Brenda Keys is President of Kilgore College. own FSA ID. After getting your FSA ID, it’s time to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (called FAFSA for short). Fill this out as soon as possible. The FAFSA has no true deadline, but the earlier students apply, the better chance they have of receiving help. It’s important to note that financial aid cannot be awarded without a completed FAFSA on file. After getting your FSA ID, complete your FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov (you will need tax return documentation to complete the FAFSA). Please note that the FAFSA is a free online tool to apply for financial aid. You should never pay anything to fill this information out. There are websites on the internet that charge to fill out the FAFSA but it doesn’t make sense to pay for something that’s free. Once your FAFSA is completed and submitted, KC will verify the information and might request documents necessary to complete the verification process.

At Kilgore College, we take pride in the “community college” designation of our school and are always looking for ways to educate the community about the steps in enrolling in college. One of those steps involves how to pay for college and the financial aid opportunities available. We get calls daily from potential students who’ve been considering attending college but they don’t think it’s something they can afford. Most students we hear from usually know what classes they want to take and have a pretty good idea of what it’ll cost but simply do not know the first step in applying for financial aid and/or what types of financial aid are available. There are many opportunities to help pay for college, but one of the most confusing elements of college always seems to be financial aid. The good news is that the financial aid professionals at Kilgore College will be happy to show you how paying your tuition is possible without depleting your savings or emptying your wallet. The first thing to know is who qualifies for federal financial aid. Most U.S. citizens who are high school/GED graduates with a valid social security number will qualify for some type of federal financial aid. For a full list of federal financial aid criteria visit www. studentaid.ed.gov/eligible. Students can choose from many different types of financial aid. Some are based on financial need and some on academic performance. Not all colleges and universities participate in all programs, but the more you know about financial aid, the better prepared you’ll be. The four types of financial aid are: state/federal grants, scholarships, loans and employment (federal work-study jobs).

When life takes away your lemons, look for limes. You finished last place in the relay. You lost in a landslide election to someone you never even stood a chance against. You failed the chemistry test. You lost the keys to your car. You were fired from the company that you worked at for over 10 years. You didn’t even get an interview for that manager position. That last paragraph was incredibly depressing, and hopefully all of those things will not happen to you at once. Actually, it’s unfortunate when any one of those things happen, but at least one of those things has happened to everyone at some point in their lives. I could be flowery and say that I wouldn’t wish that upon anyone ever; I could say that I hope your life is an easy road, paved and clean below a sunny blue sky. But I would be lying. I want you to lose. I’m not malicious; I promise. You have so much to gain from not getting what you want. Losing makes you a better person, and losing is a learning experience. Losing toughens your skin and makes you stronger. Losing teaches you humility and how to respect others. Losing makes you want to improve and can motivate you to want more. When you lose, you learn how to be graceful and kind in the face of difficulty. When you

lose, you learn about what is effective and what is inefficient or even harmful in a certain circumstance. When you lose, you can develop bonds with those who have been through similar situations. Next time you find yourself facing defeat, listen to a few sad songs or maybe have a cupcake or two. Don’t get too hung up, though, because losing is an opportunity for you to seize and make yours. Losing is only a valuable experience with the right attitude and the willingness to grow, so don’t think about what you’ve lost--think about what you’ve gained. Then get up and try again. — Hannah Brown was the 2015 LHS valedictorian and is currently a sophomore at Brandeis University where she is majoring in Economics and International & Global Studies with an emphasis on international affairs, media, and social issues.

The award is given to student teachers who exemplify qualities essential for the 21st century classroom. Members of King's LeTourneau University teacher preparation faculty and staff presented her with the certificate Friday in her Longview High School classroom. “Early on, Ms. King demonstrated her knack for seamlessly weaving the multifaceted roles of a classroom teacher — from disciplinarian, to counselor, to encourager and instructor,” said Rex McCullough, who teaches history at Hallsville High School and was her cooperating teacher. “Ms. King's students still ask about her to this day.” LeTourneau University is the Christian polytechnic university in the nation where educators engage students to nurture Christian virtue, develop competency and ingenuity in their professional fields, integrate faith and work, and serve the local and global community. LETU offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs across a range of disciplines and delivery models at LETU’s residential campus in Longview, and in hybrid and fully online options at centers in Dallas and Houston.
