East Texas says farewell to pillar of the community The Lobo community and East Texas as a whole is mourning the passing of beloved Lobo and historian, Van Craddock. A 1966 graduate of Longview High School, Mr. Craddock, will long be remembered for all of his work helping CRADDOCK to share the rich history of East Texas through his writings. Throughout most of his life, Mr. Craddock was a staple in East Texas. Whether one heard his show “Craddock at Large” on KFRO Radio, read his weekly history-and-humor column in the Longview News-Journal or read any of his six published books (“Historic Gregg County: An Illustrated History” and “I would’ve been a Lumberjack but I couldn’t hack it!” to name a few), his life was one Craddock|Continued to page 17

Looking back on another successful year dle-Grades Reform along By Dr. James Wilcox Superintendent of Schools with the Texas AssociaWith the start of a New Year, I cannot help but look back on the previous year and everything that’s occurred. Despite innumerate, historically unprecedented challenges, there were so many amazing accomplishments by our students, staff, and the entire district in 2021, that I could fill up an entire edition of The Longview Voice just listing them one by one! But in the interest of time, I’ll just hit a few of the highlights... In memoriam, Van Craddock (1948-2021) By Matthew Prosser What makes a man great? Truly great people are seldom thought so in their own time. Greatness is best appreciated in retrospect. A person who achieves great things may not necessarily be a great person. Their feats may only be the result of unbridled ambition, rather than a higher sense of serving the greatest good. Longview has lost a great man. Mr. Van Craddock passed into eternal glory on Dec. 31, leaving our community far richer than he found it, and yet leaving us all the poorer for having lost him. His contributions to Longview and the greater East Texas community can be chronicled in the body of his written work, but these are so meager in comparison to the life, love, and legacy he leaves with those who knew him. I first met Van some years back through the motley fraternity of current and former journalists in the East Texas area. Van’s influence on me — like many others — can be found in the value of seeing oneself as an

Van Craddock loved his family, his friends, his community, and his school. His life was a testament to the greatness that comes from someone who seeks to lift up those around him in the service of something far higher than himself. I hope to continue to learn from his example and to someday prove myself deserving of his friendship. A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO VAN CRADDOCK Craddock helped fullfill Jeremy Cotham’s dying wish By David Cotham

R

ecently we have seen the names of several famous people who have passed away (John Madden, Betty White, and Dan Reeves; COTHAM just to name a few). But if it were to possibly get lost in the barrage of news coverage condolences, we do not want the name of one local giant in the journalism industry to go unnoticed without receiving the proper credits that are due to him as well: Van Craddock. We want to give “tribute where tribute is due”; because “a great man has fallen” in Longview! I just want to let you know how our family will forever share a very special and unique

bond with the Van Craddock Family. Our son, Jeremy graduated from Longview High School in 2004 where he had Chris Craddock,

son of Van, as his teacher for journalism. Jeremy would then go on to Kilgore Junior College where he would major in sports journalism and where he was also able to be the sports editor for the school newspaper The Flare under Van’s wife, Bettye Craddock as his college journalism professor. But after his college graduation, Jeremy was

diagnosed with leukemia and it was during his long cancer treatments that he came up with the idea that he wanted to write a book about the 100+ year history of the Longview Lobos high school football team. Tragically Jeremy was taken from us way too early in life and Wish|Continued to page 17

PUBLISHED AUTHORS

JMQ students celebrate writing skills S ome students at Johnston McQueen recently became published authors! From first to fifth grade, students in Jodi Childress’ Dyslexia Therapy Groups spent a lot of time writing their manuscripts and designing their illustrations that would eventually be published in one collection. The entire process took about two months. “The process of writing a book itself is a miracle for some because, with dyslexia and dysgraphia, the likelihood of getting frustrated, burned-out, and wanting to quit becomes a real struggle,” Ms. Childress said. To mark this amazing accomplishment, a book reveal banquet was thrown on Monday, Dec. 13, for the students. Friends and family showed up to support the authors and to cheer them on when they read their stories. “The banquet was of utmost importance to all of my angels. They got to see that hard work and using their strategies paid off and was a huge reward for them. One student said she always dreamed of writing a book, and now she did,” Ms. Childress said. “I was blown away by the turnout at the banquet. Every single published author and illustrator showed up with their priceless support system. We could not do what we do or be who we are without the support systems evident at the banquet. We even had extended family of students come, and other dyslexic friends come to support their friends.” According to Ms. Childress, the students were hesitant about writing a book at first due to the mere fact that dyslexia deals with reading and dysgraphia deals with writing.

READING THE SUCCESS

AUTHORS |Continued from page 4 “This problem was overcome though when they started discussing how we have superpowers that only 1 in 5 people are blessed to have and how we could use speech-to-text to get thoughts on paper, they were all in,” Ms. Childress said. “The process of taking the text and then putting it into their own writing, then revising and editing was a great learning experience. “They ended up taking ownership and were asking to finish working on the writing to get it to the publisher. They were so excited about the banquet and are still talking about how much fun the banquet

was and what a dream come true to be a published author and illustrator in elementary school.” The whole experience seems to have done wonders for the students. Many parents said they were amazed at the boost of confidence they saw in their children when they learned that having a superpower (dyslexia, dysgraphia, and/or dyscalculia) is very powerful, Ms. Childress noted. “Many parents commented on how proud their child was of their accomplishment. They will never forget getting a book published or celebrating at the Book Reveal.”

Eli Hyatt, a graduate from Johnston McQueen who is now succeeding at middle school helped to end the banquet with a few words. “In my opinion, Dyslexia is not a disability but instead really just a different type of ability. I look at it as a narrow path and a wide path. The wide path is full of distractions and frustrations that will cause you to give up. But the narrow path is not always the easiest and may have ups and downs with twists and turns, but if you stay focused and use the strategies you learn and do not give up, you will be successful.”

FOUNDATION

Orr donates $2,500 to LISD Foundation On Saturday, December 18, Orr Preowned, located at 4288 U. S. Highway 259 North in Longview, celebrated its grand opening with a Holiday Event that offered donations of $2,500, $1,500, and $500 to local non-profits and charities that received the most votes from customers. At the event, visitors enjoyed free hamburgers and hot dogs while children enjoyed a giant inflatable slide and bounce house as well as visits and pictures with Santa. With the help of social media publicity from the Longview ISD Foundation and the

Longview ISD Community Relations Department, the Foundation garnered the most votes from customers and visitors to the grand opening and won the top cash donation of $2,500. Kay Ray, Foundation director, appreciates all who braved the inclement weather to join in the festivities and vote for the Longview ISD Foundation. The Longview ISD Foundation will use this donation to fund its three grant programs that enhance educational opportunities for Longview ISD students: the Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program,

the Campus Initiative Grant Program, and the John W. Harrison, Jr. Academic Field Trip Grant.

The Longview ISD Foundation appreciates Orr Preowned’s support and commitment to students and educators.

Academic Field Trip Annual employee scholarship awarded Grants given to four For the sixth year, the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. proudly awards its Employee Scholarship Award to assist district staff members who are pursuing classes and/or certifications related to classroom education in English, math, science, social studies, bilingual education, special education, STEAM, or counseling with the intent of improving classroom instruction and direct services to students in LISD. This year, the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. awards the $500 scholarship to Cassondra Stephens, teacher at East Texas Montessori Prep Academy, for tuition as she pursues a master’s degree in early childhood education from Texas A&M-Commerce. She will graduate in August 2022. Mrs. Stephens is a fifthyear teacher in Longview ISD. She is trained in gifted and talented education, English as a Second Language, and special education. She stated that the knowledge she has gained through her master’s program classes has improved her classroom teaching.

In her application, Mrs. Stephens stated, “I love being with the children and teaching them as they grow to become informed citizens of the world. Every year my aspiration is to lead the children from where they are to their greatest potential.” She also stated that by continuing her education, her students are the winners because they are getting an improved teacher. In fact, she said, “My students are getting a better me.” Helping students receive instruction from welltrained educators who want to remain in the classroom is exactly why the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. offers the Employee Scholarship. This continuing education scholarship is just one of the programs the Foundation sponsors in support of Longview ISD educators and students. Through the Foundation’s Great Rewards for Great Ideas, the Campus Initiative Grant, and the John W. Harrison, Jr. Academic Field Trip Grant, the Foundation has returned almost $1,000,000 to LISD classrooms and campuses.

On Wednesday, December 1, the Longview ISD Foundation rang in the season of giving by visiting Judson STEAM Academy, Bramlette STEAM Academy, and Foster Middle School to award four John W. Harrison, Jr. Academic Field Trip Grants for a total of $16,006.75. Foundation members Nikki Briscoe, Scott Lewis, and Heather Hilton, Academic Field Trip Grant Committee Chair, joined Kay Ray, director, to surprise the grant recipients and their students with funding for their academic field trip learning experiences. The grant recipients are: Ivonne Guerra and her ESL students at Judson STEAM Academy will travel to Texas State Technical College in Marshall to learn about the career training and opportunities that await them if they attend TSTC. Before the trip. students will research the educational programs TSTC offers, choose a program that interests them, and then research that career and create questions to ask the instructors at TSTC about career training, job opportunities, and earning potential. This trip fits nicely with Judson’s focus on college readiness and career planning. Melanie Pondant is the Judson STEAM Academy principal. Also at Judson STEAM Academy, Brandis Jamerson, Kateri Howard, and Kimberly Hatten, eighth grade science teachers, received funding for an 8th grade field trip to the planetarium on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State

University to extend students’ science instruction about our universe. As a bonus, students will tour SFA and learn about what it can offer students as students continue their focus on college readiness. Then the Foundation traveled to Bramlette STEAM Academy to award the fifth graders an overnight trip to Sky Ranch. This grant worth $7,000 will provide students with the opportunity to camp overnight and experience science that they have learned from their textbooks about the earth and their environment. Students were elated to know that Mr. Colon, Mrs. Walker, and Mrs. Taylor had worked with Nikita Mumphrey, principal, to design this trip. When asked how many students had ever been camping, only a few raised their hands, so this grant provides a new experience for students while they also learn earth science. Sky Ranch has so much to offer. Last the Foundation visited Foster Middle School to present a grant to Brandon Williamson, agriculture teacher, so he can take students to the aquarium in Dallas and then travel to the Fort Worth Rodeo and Livestock Show. After studying marine life at the aquarium, students will visit the livestock barns to learn about breeds of animals and the work required to show animals in competition before attending the rodeo. Mr. Williamson said students will Grants|Continued to page 16

THE LONGVIEW VOICE — January 2022 CRADDOCK |Continued from page 1 that was shared and enjoyed by many in East Texas. Van Craddock will be greatly missed by his Lobo family.

VAN DORN CRADDOCK, JR.

A celebration of the life of Van Dorn Craddock, Jr., 73, of Longview, took place on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at First United Methodist Church in downtown Longview with the Rev. Jay CRADDOCK Jackson officiating. Visitation followed in the Cook Foyer at the church. Van was born in Gladewater on July 1, 1948, to Van Sr. and Dorothy Latimer Craddock. He completed his earthly journey peacefully on Dec. 31 at home after a battle with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. He was a proud graduate of Longview High School Class of 1966 and an avid Lobo fan. He attended Kilgore College and was a 1970 graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University where he met the love of his life, Bettye, in a journalism class. They celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on Dec. 18. After graduation,Van worked in the sports department of the Craddock|Continued to page 19 WISH |Continued from page 3 he was not able to finish his book project, but that is where Van came into the picture! It was because of the fact that Van was already an accomplished author and it was also because Jeremy had bought the same special computer program that Bettye had used to teach him journalism at college; it was for those reasons that on his death bed at the hospital days before he passed away, he asked Bettye and Van Craddock if they would help his parents to finish his book. Jeremy also asked Van to write the introduction for his book: “Friday Night Howl”. How could they turn down that request? And even though Van wrote in the book’s introduction that “this is Jeremy’s book”; we in our family consider this as “number 7” of books that Van published (or you can call this “co-published” if you want to) in his lifetime and we just want him to receive the due honor and credit today that he deserves! Because you need to know that Van once confided that being the “avid” Lobo fan that he was (and we all know that he was) that he had always wanted to write a book about the Longview Lobos, but that he was just too busy with his other projects that he never got around to being able to do it. But now he was excited that he had been asked to be involved in doing such a project! By helping us to finish what Jeremy had already started, Van got to grant our son’s special dying wish; and Van also was

able to honor his beloved Lobos both at the same time! So, we hope by now that Van has found Jeremy in heaven and that he has already told Jeremy how he helped us to finish the Lobo book project and what a success that it was! We also bet that Alvin Khoury is up there with them too and that they cannot wait until the next high school football season! Well, here is one final “Lobo Up” for our special friend, Van Craddock. Friday nights just won’t be the same without any and all of you guys! We miss you all! — David and Sharon Cotham

the celebration by showing appreciation to these men and women. “While school districts will always face new challenges as they serve the needs of students, Texans can count on their school board members, along with other dedicated school officials, to weather these trials, create opportunities to discuss important issues, develop innovative solutions, and empower educators while remaining focused on their students’ futures,” said Gov. Abbott in his proclamation. Although showing appreciation should be a year-round process, Dr. Wilcox said taking advantage of the designated month “ensures that these important people receive some of the thanks they deserve.”

“We are so appreciative of them every month, so celebrating School Board Recognition Month is just one small way to say thanks for all that they do,” he said. Serving as a link between the community and classroom, school board members are ordinary people who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to our public schools. Elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for public schools, our trustees are responsible for an annual budget of more than $80 million, over 8,000 students, and nearly 3,000 staffers.
