ohnston-McQueen Elementary just celebrated their third published book with a special book reveal program for their family and friends. About 40 students, grades second through fifth, in Ms. Jodi Childress’ Dyslexia Therapy Groups wrote their own short stories around the theme of “I Am Possible, We Are Possible.” “Our book writing adventures started off just thinking of a theme and making sure it increased the awareness of Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and/or Dyscalculia as well as, showing the world ‘Our Superpowers.’ This year our writing adventures took a cool spin because we wrote our book inspired by Tim Tebow’s book, ‘Mission Possible.’ I saw where Tim Tebow was speaking about his dyslexia and had written a book talking about numerous characteristics that we as Dyslexics face every day,” Ms. Childress said. “He gave many examples throughout the book about how to turn challenges into strengths and how to develop a mission statement for your life and how to work toward achieving your goal/mission statement without giving up. “Through the generous donations of Donors on Donors Choose we were able to write a project that got fully funded so each student could receive their very own copy of Book||Continued to page 16 Book

OPINION

Looking back on another successful year By Dr. James Wilcox Superintendent With the start of another New Year, I cannot help but look back on the previous year and everything that’s occurred. There are always so many amazing accomplishments by our students, staff, and the entire district in 2023, that I could fill up an entire edition of The Longview Voice just listing them one by one! But in the interest of time, I’ll just hit a few of the highlights...

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Our very own Mrs. Schrundagale Griffith, a 6th-grade math teacher at Foster Middle School, was named the Secondary Teacher of the Year for Region VII Education Service Center on July 21. Mrs. Griffith’s journey to becoming an exceptional educator has been marked by dedica-

Longview ISD was well represented by bands from Forest Park, Foster, and Judson middle schools, in addition to Longview High. All LISD bands received a first division for their performance in the concert and sight-reading contest with six LISD bands taking home the sweepstakes award. These achievements are not only testaments to the high quality of students and staff, but the many parents and community members who so passionately support this program! Longview ISD is on the lookout for top talent Longview ISD is looking to fill approximately 50 positions at different campuses and departments. Ms. Shalona McCray, Chief Human Resources Officer, said the district is looking to fill critical need areas like Math, Science, Spanish, and Bilingual Education, as well as Social Studies, Reading, and Language Arts. “We are hiring for elMCCRAY ementary and secondary staff, and professional positions across the district,” she said, encouraging job seekers to fill out an application online and attach the appropriate materials to their application, including copies of their resume, transcripts, teaching certificates, and three letters of recommendation. Longview ISD’s commitment to innovation is evident in its programs and curriculum. The district has implemented a one-to-one technology initiative, providing all students with a device to enhance their learning experience. The district also offers a variety of advanced programs, including dual-credit courses, Advanced Placement courses, and career and technical education programs. In addition to its innovative approach to education, LISD is also one of the highest-paying and highest-performing school

districts in the region. The district’s starting teacher salary is $52,000, significantly higher than the state average of $47,000. Teachers in LISD also have access to performance pay, which provides additional compensation for high-performing teachers. Longview ISD’s commitment to its employees extends beyond compensation, as the district offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans, and professional development opportunities. The district also provides a supportive and

collaborative work environment, encouraging teachers to share their ideas and expertise to improve student outcomes. The district’s focus on innovation and high-performance has yielded impressive results. LISD has consistently earned high ratings from the Texas Education Agency, earning 53 total distinctions on accountability ratings from the Texas Education Agency. An increase from the 51 distinctions earned a year ago, and yet again one of the highest number of distinctions for any school system in East Texas. As one of the largest employers in the city, LISD plays a critical role in the community, not just as an employer, but as an educator and partner. With its innovative approach to education, high-performance, and commitment to its employees and community, LISD is a model for school districts across the country. Allyson Morgan brings international flavor By Christy Triece Guest Writer Meet Allyson Morgan, teacher of 7th and 8th Grade Language and Literature students at Judson Steam Academy. She also teaches one 8th Grade Honors Community Project Class. Because she lived in Italy for a number of years, she brings an international flavor to her classroom. She is fluent in Italian and has a special place in her heart for ESL students. Another experience that makes her a natural in an IB classroom is her three years of teaching 5th Graders at Imagine International Academy, a K-12 IB public charter school located in McKinney, Texas. “I believe in IB and I love IB,” she says, adding that her time at Imagine prepared her for the position she now has at JMS. Ms. Morgan’s 8th Grade Community Project students are midway through the process of inquiry, research, and planning their projects. This will prepare them to take action and finally, to reflect of their project’s impact on their learning and char-

acter. As 8th Graders, all IB students engage in a community project which “provides an important opportunity for students ages 13-14 to collaborate and pursue service learning.” (ibo.org). Individually or in groups of up to four, her students are exploring subjects as diverse as art therapy for children to teen addiction, to fishing. “There are these two boys who are obsessed with fishing and they want to help out with the fresh meals that are given to

the homeless every week. So they could go fishing and have a fish fry once a month for the homeless,” she explains. In her Language and Literature, in short English, classes, students keep two types of journals, one for information and notes and another for reflective writing. As a part of the Unit of Inquiry they are currently exploring, students consider that “big history moments, or turning points, give us a purpose for creating change” and they examine this concept in several literary genres: fiction, literary nonfiction, drama, and poetry. For example, students recently read and analyzed two poems, both by African Americans, one written by a former slave after the Civil War, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and one written by an author who was a teen during the Civil Rights Movement, Nikki Grimes. Both poems describe the “masks” people wear, an issue especially relevant to middle school teens. First students read and analyzed the poems for the typical literary devices, but then Ms. Morgan paired the TCIS||Continued to page 17 TCIS

How principals affect students and schools By Dr. Brian Ziemer ETAA CEO The little boy, a Third Grader, looked down at the floor, unwilling to look his principal in the eye. The principal quietly ZIEMER asked, “Did you make some wrong choices today?” The little boy nodded. “Yes ma’am, I made a wrong choice today.” The principal asked, “Do you think you can make

better choices for the rest of today?” The little boy nodded. As she opened her arms to offer a hug, the principal gently said with a smile, “Well then,

let’s try again. I know you will do better today!” The little boy raised his eyes to look at his principal, then collapsed into her arms, tears flowing,

the trespass corrected, the momentary pain of making a bad choice overwhelmed by the principal’s love and concern for the child. The principal watched him walk back to class, then turned to me and said, “That’s the most important part of my job.” In 2021, Dr. Constance Lindsay of UNC’s College of Education published a landmark study entitled, “How Principals Affect Students and Schools: Two Decades of Research”. The study included more than 22,000 principals in four states. It found that ETAA||Continued to page 17 ETAA

Board approves new health clinic During their regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 9, the Longview ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve a new on-campus health clinic operated by Wellness Pointe of Longview and funded by a $350,000 federal grant. Located at Longview High School, the clinic will only be open to current students and staff members. Community members will not have access to the campus or the facility to maintain school safety and security protocols. The measure passed 3-2, with one abstention and one absence. “After extensive conversations with parents, community partners, and LISD staff, the board agreed that restricting access is integral to maintaining campus safety and security,” said Dr. Wayne Guidry, LISD Assistant Superintendent of Finance. Instead, administrators identified two potential non-instructional locations for the clinic within the existing school infrastructure, avoiding displacement of academic facilities. Dr. Guidry explained GUIDRY that renovations to prepare the space are expected to cost less than $40,000. “The competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, awarded to only 77 school-based health centers nationwide this year, will cover operational costs for services tailored specifically to the district’s student population and employees,” he said. Dr. Guidry said the most important priority is that this clinic aims to increase access to medical and mental health services for students and staff. “We are thrilled that the expertise of Wellness Pointe — combined with federal support — will allow us to provide quality care to students in need, without any additional burden on local taxpayers,” said Dr. Guidry. Operated by Wellness Pointe, the clinic’s initial staffing will include one medical provider, two mental health counselors, and support personnel. Services offered will include basic medical care, mental health counseling, optometry, psychiatry, and dentistry.

The clinic builds on the success of a similar Wellness Pointe school-based health center launched in 2022 at another district location. That facility has served over 1,300 patients in its first year of operation, providing over 4,500 medical and counseling visits. District and school leaders emphasized that on-campus delivery of medical, mental health, and support services aims to remove barriers to care for students, increase academic success, reduce absenteeism, and improve long-term health outcomes. “By bringing care directly to students and staff most in need, we hope to foster healthier, more equitable outcomes district- and community-wide,” said Dr. James Wilcox, Longview ISD Superintendent of Schools. “This clinic will provide conveniently accessible, judgment-free services tailored specifically to our school population.” Counseling services are expected to be in especially high demand, as over 90 percent of all visits at Wellness Pointe’s existing school clinic are mental-health related. With the board’s approval, Wellness Pointe will now begin preparing the high school campus location. The on-site clinic is exWILCOX pected to open its doors to students and staff later this year.

DLR CONTRACT

Later, board members unanimously approved a $50,000 contract with archi-

tecture firm DLR Group to begin planning for a potential bond election this year. The contract will be paid from general funds. The district sought proposals from six firms in December and selected DLR Group after an evaluation process assessing each company’s qualifications, according to Dr. Wayne Guidry, Assistant Superintendent of Finance. Based in Dallas, the DLR Group has over five decades of architecture experience and currently has 41 licensed architects in Texas on staff. The firm has worked on more than 900 renovation projects, 200 school additions, 1,400 addition and renovation combinations, and over 1,100 new school construction projects. Dr. Guidry said the 13-member DLR team is prepared to start working with the district on planning if trustees call for a bond election before the February deadline. “The administration views DLR Group as the most qualified firm for the planning work based on their extensive Texas school architecture experience spanning decades and over 3,000 educational projects,” he said. “This expertise is expected to benefit planning efforts moving forward.”

BOARD ||Continued Continued from page 1 more responsive to the needs of all Longview families.” “Our locally elected Board of Trustees plays a vital role in connecting our schools with the Longview community we serve,” he said. “We are grateful for their selfless commitment to representing students’ and families’ voices as we work together to provide an excellent education for every LISD learner. Serving as a link between the community and the classroom, school board members are elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for public schools. LISD trustees are responsible for an annual budget of more than $100 million, over 8,000 students, and nearly 3,000 staffers. To honor the more than 7,200 locally elected trustees in Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott has

declared January as School Board Recognition Month, and the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) is encouraging all Texas commuABBOTT nities to join the celebration by showing appreciation to these men and women. “Ensuring an excellent education is the work of many, and local school boards collaborate with teachers, parents, and stakeholders to promote state and national standards in ways that reflect the community’s values,” Gov. Abbott said in his proclamation. “By so doing, they inspire a lifelong love of learning for the next generation of Texas leaders.” Gov. Abbott’s proclamation

encourages Texans to recognize their local school board members. “Their commitment to education and their communi- TROXELL ties represents the best of Texas,” he said. Mr. Dan Troxell, Troxell, executive director of the Texas Association of School Boards, applauded the efforts of trustees in providing leadership and good governance so that school districts can focus on educating the 5.4 million public schoolchildren in their care. “School boards play a critical role in shaping the future of our communities,” he said. “They serve as the bridge between the public’s vision for local education and the day-to-

day operations of our schools. Trustees work hard to ensure that our schools are responsive to the values and priorities of their communities.” Public school trustees are the largest group of locally elected officials in the state. These school board members are not paid, volunteering their time and expertise to serve their local communities. Although showing recognition should be a year-round process, Dr. Wilcox said taking advantage of the designated month “ensures that these important people receive some of the thanks they deserve.” “Our school board members are volunteers who shoulder critical responsibilities and often make difficult choices for our district, all without pay,” he said. “Their goal is always focused on the future success of the children in our district.”

OVER $7.3M IN INCENTIVE PAY

Longview ISD awarded more than $7.3 million in incentive pay for achieving teachers, with a few of the very highest-performing teachers receiving more than $30,000 extra in their December paychecks! As a result of this incentive program, 11 classroom teachers will make over $100,000 this year! We could not be more excited to see our teachers receive these dollar amounts,” he said. “But our students are the real winners! The program is funded by the district’s fund balance, as approved by the Longview ISD Board of Trustees.

Board members unanimously approved salary increases for district teachers and staff, in addition to setting a time to discuss the proposed 2023-24 tax rate, during their Jul 17 regular meeting. The measure includes a 5 percent increase for teachers and pay grade midpoint for all remaining employees. In addition to the 5 percent increase of midpoint, the district will implement pay structures that adjust staff salaries that improve internal equity and market competitiveness. We also adjusted pay for employees below or above proposed pay grade maximums.” Later, during their Nov. 13 regular meeting, the board approved a one-time employee retention payment plan using Child Care Relief grant funds for staffers at the district’s Playing For Keeps Early Childhood Center. In total, the retention plan will distribute approximately $50,000 to eligible staff across the district, including custodians.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI

Longview Independent School District honored three accomplished former students during our annual Distinguished Alumni festivities Oct. 13. This year’s Distinguished Alumni are Bob Cohen (Class of 1965), Dr. Lisa Supercinski Muller (Class of 1986), and Cherika Morrison Johnson (Class of 1995). Distinguished alumni typically have excelled professionally, in addition to serving the communities in which they live. Honorees are nominated atlarge and chosen by a committee of previous honorees, volunteer Distinguished Alumni Committee members, and the district’s Community Relations office. Whew! That might seem like a lot, but it’s actually just a sampling of the many great things happening at Longview ISD. Our district continues to be the best school district east of Interstate 45, and it’s all because of our people: our students, our staff, our parents, and our many community partners. Thank you all for a wonderful 2023, and my prayers are with you for an even better 2024! — Dr. James Wilcox has served as Superintendent of Schools for Longview ISD since 2007.

BOOK ||Continued Continued from page 1 his book. We have been able to read and discuss his book in our small groups. Each student developed their ‘Mission Statement’ and included it on their page of the book.” Ms. Childress is delighted by what her children have done with this project. “This project was beneficial to my students because they are able to see that having a Superpower like Dyslexia can be used as a positive and not looked down upon. They were able to read a very successful athlete’s personal story of how his persistence paid off. They were able to incorporate reading, writing, and expressing the blessing of their Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and/or Dyscalculia with many others. We will continue to learn more about our individual ‘Mission Statements’ and numerous other bits of wisdom we have gleaned from Tim Tebow’s book.” The children all wrote individual notes to Mr. Tim Tebow, a former NFL quarterback, with a picture of them holding his book. Once the book was published, not only did the students get to enjoy revealing the final product to friends and family, but sending a signed copy to Mr. Tebow. “His foundation was gracious to make sure he received his autographed edition as well as sent a photo of him holding our book and an email quote to share with the students. This made their day,”

Ms. Childress said. This project has given the students a great hands-on way to help them not only learn but also have something that will be a cherished memento to keep forever. Plus, a fun story about how they got to write to Mr. Tebow. The parents are also proud of their children’s success on the project, as Mrs. Caity Rutledge stated, “We are proud to know that Ms. Childress is encouraging students through real-world examples. Students can see that they are not limited in what they can achieve by seeing what people with similar struggles have overcome. We enjoyed hearing about the project from Brooke as she would give updates along the way with excitement.”

The study found those four practices to be crucial in maintaining positive school climate among students, and high morale and job retention among teachers. Another 2021 study published by Frederick Brown, CEO of LearningForward. org and entitled “Why Principals Matter More Than Ever” found two key characteristics of effective principals: “First, principals recognize that their leadership matters now more than ever before, and they are stepping up to meet the needs of their teachers and students. Second, they realize that one

of their most important roles is building a supportive and understanding climate for their teams.” Brown further observed that, “creating a positive school climate [is] one important facet of leadership . . . we believe school leaders are more successful in building and maintaining a positive school climate when they understand that collaboration is essential.” Finally, Brown’s conclusion brings us back to a little boy receiving a hug from his principal in one of our schools: “When teachers and students feel safe and supported by the principal,

The students realized the modern author’s surprising technique, and “what an achievement that was” to not only place the words as she did, but to convey the same message about wearing masks as well. Ms. Morgan’s enthusiasm for teaching is evident when she remembers, “I loved that day—to see all the light bulbs go off in their heads.” She tied in IB with these paired poems from dif-

LOBO GARDEN

Latest news from the garden By James Beasley Coordinator I would like to start by saying that I hope everyone had a great Christmas break and a Happy New Year. It’s moments like these that build strong and loving relationships with family and friends that will last a lifetime. In terms of our new year goals for the garden, we have adopted the motto of “Double Down” meaning that our number one objective for the year is to double our production from last year. We fully understand that there are multiple variables that could impact this goal, but mountains can be climbed if we take one step at a time. Of course, the biggest part in the success of this goal will be your continued prayers. Not that we should boast at the end of the year, but to hilight Gods greatness in our daily lives. Starting in early January the garden team will plant over 6000 onions of various varieties to

Sycamore trees, which are a cousin to maples, can also produce lots of syrup. They say it tastes like butterscotch. 3. It takes 50 gallons of sap to make one quart of sycamore syrup. 4. Blåbär(pronounced blabber) is Norwegian for blueberry. Now you know.

We know you by name. You are our neighbors, mothers, cousins, sisters, fathers, best friends, brothers and everything in between. We get to know you so we can serve you on a first name basis. We take banking personally.

will be to grow 1000 tomato and pepper plants along with watermelons, cantaloupes, squash, green beans, corn, potatoes, and cucumbers. In June we will plant pumpkins followed by more corn, cucumbers, lettuce, and squash in late August. In addition to this we have several field trips lined up

starting in early February. It’s always a joy to see students in the garden because they can learn so much from the tactile interactions they get to experience as they interact with their surroundings. The “Aha’s and Wow’s” that one hears during these field trips are truly inspirational.
