OPINION

Exchange student matured in Texas By Boburbek Boymirzayev LHS 2022 Graduate In all its honesty, I never have thought that my dream to study in the USA would come true in such an early period of my life. BOYMIRZAYEV In 2021, I was ecstatic to find out that I successfully passed all the steps of the FLEX program and was granted a year of studies in high school. After a long flight full of unforgettable moments with other FLEX students, my host family met me at the airport and took me to my future American home in the suburbs of Dallas, TX. My host, the Guck family, are the kindest people I have ever met in life; always smiling and caring. Theresa Guck, her husband Steve Guck, and their 4 children became my life-long relatives. I clearly remember all the challenges I went through in the first couple of weeks. No one really understood my English and I didn’t understand their way of speaking, but what shocked me most was that they didn’t do the handshaking the way we do here in Uzbekistan; so that was the moment when I realized that I didn’t know much about American culture. I am going to miss drinking hot tea in the mornings and our food in general. It took me approximately one month to adjust to a new culture. Very soon I fell in love with their cereal and peanut butter and jelly sandwich and real pizza that I still believe you can find only in America. The most amazing thing that attracted me to American schools was the school lunch. Such lunches are not provided at our school, especially for free. Eating in a cafeteria with friends during lunch is the most wonderful of the American vibes. In America, I was better understood by adults than by my best friends, and it would be much easier for me to communicate with them. I think I will miss them a lot. During my exchange, I studied not only American culture but also Filipino culture, and it is no exaggeration to say that this is one of my great-

est achievements in America. Throughout my research, I have learned that we have many similarities, despite our different religions, customs, and cultures. Our Uzbek proverbs and words that we use in our daily lives are often used by Americans. Religiously, they also include fasting and morning prayers. There is nothing special about feeling like you have never felt in your life. Whenever I saw American holidays and big buildings in the movies, I always wanted to feel the emotions that people in those movies felt, and I never imagined that my dreams would come so fast a year later. For example, when I first went to see the skyscrapers, I was moved to tears by their beauty. On the eve of Halloween, it is strange for us to go from house to house collecting sweets and opening presents around the Christmas tree on Xmas. But I have felt these feel-

ings at least once in my life, and many of the dreams I dreamed of as a child came true in those seconds. We all know that animals are friends of humans, but for Americans, dogs and cats are not only their friends but also their family members. So we have a puppy named Atom in our house too. His eyes were like a black button and he often played with people, and when he was bored he would put his head in the corner of the sofa and relax. Atom’s laughter and his eyes will be the biggest thing I will miss when I am in Uzbekistan. I am proud to say that when I first came to America, I had homesick, but when I learned about American life, this feeling is far away from me, but this feeling will return soon, that is, when I am in Uzbekistan, my life in America and my loved ones will be Homesick.

In one year in America, I had done so many activities and took part in dozens of events that I wish every school kid could experience in life because as an adult and college students, there won’t be enough opportunities or time to have those crazy moments of teenage life that are full of joy and amusement. My experience in the U.S. had a valuable impact on my life and broadened my vision into the world. Experiencing life in the United States in such an early period of my life molded my personality and showed me life from a different perspective. When I return home, I think I am going to be surprised to see everything from a different point of view. I will feel like I am going to return home as a more mature and independent person with unforgettable memories. — Boburek Boymirzayev was an exchange student at Longview High School for the 202122 school year from Uzbekistan.

Christi Coleman moves up at Hudson PEP After 27 years in education, four of which have been at LISD, and three at Hudson PEP, Curricular Program Support Specialist Mrs. COLEMAN Christi Coleman will be dawning a new title this fall as she becomes the new principal at Hudson. “It is a privilege and blessing to become the next principal of Hudson PEP, and an honor to serve the staff and students

here,” Mrs. Coleman said. “I hope to continue the successes and traditions of Hudson PEP

with the amazing staff and students that fill our halls everyday.”

Mrs. Coleman is taking over at the campus after Sue Wilson retired at the end of the 202122 school year. “Mrs. Wilson will always be my hero and mentor. She is truly remarkable and has established high expectations that we intend to uphold in the future,” she said. Growing up in Groverton and graduating from Stephen F. Chuck Isaac to lead at Foster Middle School Former Big Sandy ISD Assistant Principal Mr. Chuck Isaac has been hired as the new Principal for Foster Middle School. The ISAAC Longview ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved hiring Mr. Isaac during their May 18 special-called meeting. Mr. Isaac has been in education for two decades in various roles, including classroom teacher, coach, and administrator. He began his career in public education as a history teacher and coach at Trimble

Tech High for Fort Worth ISD. During his career, Mr. Isaac has worked for school districts in Dallas, Tyler, Marshall, Jefferson, Ore City, and most recently at Big Sandy ISD, where he was Assistant Principal for grades 6-12. Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox said he has been familiar with Mr. Isaac’s work and reputation for WILCOX a number of years, and when the administration saw the opportunity to fill an important role with such a qualified applicant,

“We did not hesitate.” “Chuck Isaac brings a wealth of talents and life experiences that make him uniquely qualified to lead a campus as dynamic as Foster,” he said. Mr. Isaac replaces interim principal Mr. Christopher

Trotter, who served in the role after previous campus principal Mr. Ryan Carroll moved over to Forest Park Middle. “We greatly appreciate Mr. Trotter’s invaluable assistance during this transition,” added Dr. Wilcox.

Gaylon Sanders to retire Thank you Officer Brian after 20 years with LISD for your service at Foster After working for Longview ISD for more than 20 years, Warehouse Manager Gaylon Sanders is retiring. Thanks to Mr. Sanders, the delivery of goods in the district has been running perfectly. He has been a critical part of LISD’s success. We thank Mr. Sanders for all of his dedication to helping ensure that the district runs smoothly.

School Resource Officer Robert Brian has retired after 20 years of service, the last 8 of which have been as the at Foster. “I’ve enjoyed working at Foster. I think we’ve made some differences in students who may not have had the opportunity without that relationship.” Thank you for all that you have done for Foster, Officer Brian.

Awards of Excellence honors students Longview ISD Administrators and Board of Trustees recognized student achievement in academics as well as the arts on Friday night May 13, during the 44th annual LHS Awards of Excellence Banquet at the Mickey Melton Performing Arts Center. This marks the 46th year that students have been honored for their dedication. Each presentation of medals was accompanied by a creative arts performance by Longview High School students. Chloe Hamilton, Juan Martinez, Harrison Taylor, and Brianna Estrada were honored in the Art category by instructors Jeff Hull and Edward Rothfus, with samples of their work on display throughout the venue. Joel Rincon was awarded in Band from Director Rhonda Daniel, also performing “The Green Hill” by Bert Appermont with a baritone. Sony Betancourt and Jessica Stowers were honored in the Choir category by instructor Melody McMullen, with Sony performing “Romance” by Claude

Debussy, and Jessica performing “Spirate, Pur Spirate” by Stefano Donaudy. Miranda Gonzalez, Arya Germanwala, Abigail Fletcher, Sofia Massare, and Clancy Davis were recognized for their publishing work in the Communications category by Yearbook/ Journalism adviser Sasha Cantu.

Angie Mendoza and Rylee Hunter received awards for the Dance category by Debbie McGowan, with Angie and Rylee performing a dance duet. Matthew Guck was honored in the Orchestra category by Jacob Bridges, and performed a violin rendition of “Navarra” by Pablo de Sarasate with Renee Ward.

Abigail Fletcher was honored a second time, this time in the Theatre category by Pam Mercer-McWilliams. April Butler was awarded for LoboFILM by Josh Graves. Established in 1976, the event honors the most outstanding senior students in the arts and academics. At that first banquet, then-superintendent Dr. Henry Wheeler said the purpose is to “pay tribute to our best, our most talented, and to impress upon them that they each have a story to tell.” Current LISD Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox praised the students, staff, and families in attendance “for giving so generously of your time, your energy, and your talent.” “Those of us in the administration can just stand back and say ‘wow’ when we see what these young people are able to accomplish,” he said. “It’s very personally rewarding for me to play just a small part in helping all of our students pursue and achieve such excellence.”

Two SpEd buses replaced with new 2023 models Two of the six Special Education buses have been taken off the road and have been replaced with two new models. The older ones, 2011 and 2012, each had over 200,000 miles on them. Due to the wear and tear, the buses have seen a lot of time off the road and in the garage. This year alone, they had spent weeks in the garage. “We were spending too much money on repairs for these two Special Ed buses,” said Dr. Wayne Guidry, assistant

superintendent of business, transportation and technology. “One of the most dangerous

places you can be on the road is sitting on the road with cars going past you at 60 miles-

per-hour. When a bus breaks down, kids have to get off the bus and be transferred to another bus.” Thanks to the new buses being 2023 models, they will be spending more time on the road and less in the garage which will help the district to spend less money and keep the students safe. Another advantage of the new buses is replacing parts will not be much of an issue. Buses|Continued to page 19

District honors Distinguished Alumni Longview Independent School District honored three accomplished former students on May 6 during the annual Distinguished Alumni ceremony and luncheon. This year’s Distinguished Alumni are Mrs. Kay Ray (Class of 1970), Mr. Rogers Pope, Jr. (Class of 1985), and Mr. Trent Williams (Class of 2006). Distinguished alumni typically have excelled professionally, in addition to serving the communities in which they live.

KAY HELVENSTON RAY

“I’ve spent my entire life in school. Over those years, I can tell you that some people have told me that I did the wrong thing. People said, ‘look how you sold those t-shirts. You should have been a salesman.’ ‘Oh, you can argue like crazy. You should have been a lawyer.’ ‘You should have been a writer.’ I appreciate all of that, but I was destined to be a teacher.”

A 1970 graduate of Longview High School, Kay continued her education at the University of Texas at Austin where she earned a Bachelor of Science. She then went on to obtain a Master of Science degree at Stephen F. Austin State University. Over the years, she has gone on to earn additional college hours and training that has allowed her to help so many graduating Lobos to pursue their college dreams. Kay’s career started in 1974 as a 9th grade English teacher. For the next 29 years, she taught countless students during her dedicated service. In 1994 she went from teaching to being the Gifted and Talented Coordinator and District Testing Coordinator. She would do this until she retired from LISD. In 1995 Kay become the Executive Director of the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. which she still performs today. In 2008, she became the College Advisor and Scholarship Coordinator at LHS which saw her launching the LHSD College and Career Center. Since becoming the College Advisor and Scholarship Coordinator, Kay has conducted

and his father the Distinguished Citizen Good Turn Award. He has received numerous other awards, all of which have made the Lobo Nation proud. Rogers is married to Kellie Pope, and has several children. John Rogers Pope III, 29, Sarah Pope, 26, William Pope, 23, Sydnie Stover, 19, and Casey Stover, 14.

TRENT WILLIAMS

parent and student seminars called Lobo University, advised junior and senior students and their parents about the college admission process created informational handouts for students and parents mapping the road to college from grades 8-12, and so much more. Because of Kay’s diligent work, the Lobo community has had a brighter future. Kay is married to John Ray, with a son, Chris Ray, 41.

ROGERS POPE, JR.

“It’s been a great privilege to live, learn, work, and worship in this community. I do hope I’ve made some contributions back to the community, and for those who will follow. But please know that the real beneficiary is my affiliation with the school. All hail to dear old Longview High School.”

A 1985 graduate of Longview High School, Rogers Pope, Jr. continued his education at Baylor University where he received a Bachelor of Business in Administration. Afterward, he attended Baylor University Law School and earned his Juris Doctor degree. He is active in many professional and industry associations. Since returning to Longview in 1994, Rogers has been extensively involved in the community while serving on various boards and committees. Since graduating from LHS, Rogers has been recognized by the community for his great work. In 2007, the Longview Chamber of Commerce honored him as Citizen of the Year. Five years later, the East Texas Area Council Boy Scouts of America awarded him

“I bleed green. If you look at my heart, it’s probably shaped like a Rockin’ L. This community has done a lot for me. Not only the football aspect...but just the man that it made me become.”

Born and raised a Longview Lobo, this Class of 2006 graduate was a unanimous first-team All-District, All-East Texas, and second-team All-State selection as a senior, leading the 2005 football team to a 10-0 undefeated regular season Class 125A District Championship. The multisport athlete also earned Track & Field honors as a shot putter. Considered only a threestar athlete by recruiting “experts,” Trent accepted a scholarship from the University of Oklahoma over offers from Texas A&M, LSU, and others. But far more than his professional accomplishments, Trent has demonstrated a tremendous love and loyalty to his community and his alma mater. Exemplifying the credo of “Once A Lobo, Always A Lobo,” Trent has underwritten and sponsored numerous programs and initiatives to benefit students and staff of Longview ISD, as well as his hometown. Various projects include buying the organ and piano at Parkview Baptist Church, to running numerous Silverback events in Longview. With the Silverback program, he has offered a free football camp almost yearly at LHS since 2013, giving away bikes and shoes to LISD students. Since starting the football camp, he has worked with hundreds of local students. Trent has three children, Micah, 13, Makayla, 8, and Marley, 2.

Traffic flow sees improvement at Foster As the school year started to wind down with just a couple weeks left, a new traffic flow for parent pickup at Foster was implemented. With the new plan in place, the new flow of traffic saw huge success. The speed for parent pick-up was increased, seeing parents and students get off campus much faster. “The plan worked great. The very first day of implementing the plan, we saw a dramatic increase in how quickly the students left the campus,” said Sgt. Jeremy Higginbotham, Traffic Division Supervisor for Longview Police Department. “We saw a dramatic decrease in how much traffic backed up on MLK and Birdsong. And if emergency personnel needed to respond to the campus, there was immediate and

available access the whole time. “We appreciate them being patient with us as we navigate new ideas and procedures to

help keep their children safe and to help make the pick up more efficient for all persons involved.” The change to traffic comes

after School Resource Officer Robert Brian noticed a few years back that the congestion at the campus was often causing issues. At times, the nearby fire station was even being blocked in by traffic. “The decision to adjust the traffic flow was based on several reasons,” Sgt. Higginbotham said. “The traffic flow at the front of the school was blocking the fire lane preventing emergency vehicles from accessing the school, and traffic was backing up on to MLK and Birdsong which was causing more problems.” With the success seen at Foster, the next course of action is to improve the traffic flow at Hudson PEP this fall. “The LPD is working with LISD again and evaluating Foster|Continued to page 12

THE LONGVIEW VOICE — Summer 2022

IB Robing Ceremony honors excellence By Linda Buie TCIS Executive Director At the end of each year, the IB seniors are honored with a Robing Ceremony hosted at the Summit Club. The parents are invited, and a nice lunch is served. This Ceremony is the culmination of two years of hard work, service learning, and a 4,000 word extended essay. Each student writes a reflection beforehand, and the reflections are published in a book for the students and parents to have as a keepsake. Students select one of their teachers to present them the IB hood during the ceremony. The students kneel, and the teacher places the hood on the student. As the students are presented their hoods, I read a short excerpt from their reflections. I thought you might enjoy reading some of the reflections.

INIABASI EKPENYONG

Each day in the IB program, I am growing more self-aware of my work ethic and ability to time manage, at least I hope so. But most of all, I am appreciative of all my teachers, each and every one of them instilling within me a passion for learning and a lifelong lesson that I won’t soon forget.

BRAYDEN STRONG

Honestly, I don’t know where I would be without the IB program to prepare me for college and life after high school. Sure, there were a few sleepless nights and

stressful weekends, especially lately with all the IAs – sorry Mr. Bock I know we’ve had since August- but I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything else. It’s surreal to have actually reached the end of my senior year, and to be honest it is a little scary not knowing what my future holds. Thanks to IB, though, and its stellar teachers, students, and program, I know I’ll be able to thrive in whatever I do. I’m so proud of every single one of my fellow classmates and I can’t wait to see what your futures have in store. Thank you.

CHRISTOPHER CLODFELTER

IB was such a wonderful experience for me. I was able to learn much more about different cultures and experiences. The teachers have provided with the necessary skills to be successful in my higher education journey. I am very thankful for these teachers and the staff that has helped me through my journey in IB. I have met many that I would have never thought I would ever meet. The people have become my lifelong friends and I plan on keeping them in

my life. These students have the drive and the determination to stay on top of their assignments. This dedication and drive has rubbed off on me and I plan on using this skill throughout my life and college career.

REESE BLAIR

IB has been an enriching experience that has taught me how to better communicate with others, think critically, and to explore subjects that are of interest to me. Thank you to all of the teachers for preparing us for our IB exams; without the IB teachers and their dedication to teaching IB would not have been as fulfilling of an experience.

ADITYA JAGALAMUDI

Now, while looking back, the IB program has been an incredible experience. Although its difficulty and requirements have pushed the limits of my work ethic, the IB program has helped me become more confident in my academic abilities, and I will always cherish the knowledge that I have obtained throughout these past two years.

ly with the design of the parking layout and in dealing with younger students. Smaller children bring many new safety hazards which all have to be carefully thought through and considered when changing the traffic plan.”

Once more information is available about possible changes to Hudson PEP traffic, the Longview ISD will provide the information on the district Facebook page, as well as the district website, LISD.org.

Teachers honored with Lamplighter Awards by students

F

ounded in 1994, the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit community organization whose mission is to request, receive, maintain, and use funds to maximize the quality of education available in the Longview Independent School District. Using generous contributions from businesses, community members, Longview ISD employees, parents, alumni, and friends of the district, the Foundation funds the Great Rewards for Great Ideas grant program to advance new, innovative approaches to teaching. Since 1996, the Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program has funded 728 grants, returning $795,468.74 to LISD’s classrooms and enabling innovative teachers, counselors, librarians, and nurses to create new educational programs or to enhance existing ones so that they can provide the best instruction possible to all students. These grants have funded programs and projects for students of all ability levels in a variety of disciplines. In addition to strengthening academics, the grants have also funded projects in music, art, technology, character education, health and physical education, and guidance and counseling. The Foundation has also funded forty-seven Campus Initiative Grants for a total of $138,872.58. The Foundation believes that this grant program, targeting overall campus improvement, complements the Foundation’s annual Great Rewards for Great Ideas Program. Since fall 2008, the Foundation has funded five John W. Harrison, Jr. Academic Field Trip Grants for fourth and fifth grade and middle school students for a total of $25,991.13. Through its three grant programs, the Longview ISD Foundation has returned a grand total of $960,332.45 to LISD classrooms and campuses in its twenty-six-year history, moving ever closer to the one-million-dollar mark. With the Lamplighter Awards, the Longview ISD Foundation pays tribute to students and the educators who are special to them in their school lives and invites the community to celebrate those dedicated, nurturing educators. To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Lamplighter Awards, the Foundation asked students to remember a special educator who holds a magical place in their hearts and minds because he or she exhibits one of the twenty characteristics past Lamplighter Award student honorees think educators should possess and write essays about those educators. Those characteristics are: • Possessing knowledge of the subject he or she teaches • Displaying kindness or compassion • Making learning interesting and fun • Accepting all students • Believing in students and wanting them to succeed • Creating a sense of family in the classroom • Encouraging students, especially when students

hh, yes, the rumors of the mean and scary first grade teacher reached me. You can imagine what the walk to Mrs. Lopez’s classroom was like. A young, shy girl clung to her mother’s hand. I was shaking in fear! I entered Mrs. Lopez’s classroom, refusing to let go of my mom. I looked up and was certain the undercover witch was going to put me in a bowl of boiling water and cook me. She walked toward us, slowly reached out her hand and........welcomed us!

hile students may not realize they have a favorite teacher, one day they realize they always go to one teacher rather than to others. These teachers function as the students’ sanctuary for the most difficult, diverse, and burdening years of their young lives. GRADUATION |Continued from page 1 LHS Salutatorian Iniabasi Ekpenyong is excited about the future and looking towards the exciting things it has in store. “In graduating, we will take our first real steps towards becoming adults; independent for the first EKPENYONG time in our lives,” Iniabasi said. “Still, I’m going to be honest. The future can be terrifying. We are forced to venture into unfamiliar places and leave our friends behind. For the first time in our lives, we will be alone., without the support of our parents and teachers. From what I have heard, life is going to be very painful. Whether it’s enrolling in college or beginning a career, whatever you may pursue, you are bound to face challenges, some harder than others. But I have good news: don’t give up. You will persevere and your blood, sweat, and tears will mean something. Maybe not today, or the next, but one day.” He went on to raise the hope of the friends the grads will make along the way.

Class of 2022 Valedictorian Nitya Jagarlamudi has one word for the last four years. “If I had to summarize the last four years of high school in one word, I would describe them as unpredictable. Unpredictable in the ways we have grown JAGARLAMUDI and succeeded, as we have discovered and devoted ourselves to our passions. Unpredictable in the way we have confronted competition, failures, and struggled with mental health. Unpredictable in the way that it has been nothing like the Disney Channel shows we grew up watching. ” She went on to thank the mothers, dads, and siblings, especially twins, and teachers, coaches and counselors. Thanking them all for inspiring and guiding the graduates. With some offers still pending, scholarships total $4.4 million for nearly 600 seniors, according to Mrs. Kay Ray, Longview High School’s coordinator of college scholarships and financial aid. With the older ones, getting parts could often be a hassle now days. “What’s even more pressing is that you can’t even get parts this year. They’re old, we couldn’t get parts (due to global shortages), and they’ve just been spending too much time in the shop,” Dr. Guidry said.

“In high school, as a senior 4-H member, I helped coach the junior team. I spent my college summers as a camp counselor,” Mrs. Coleman said. “I have never considered another career beyond education. I wanted to serve my community with love and compassion just like the wonderful teachers I was blessed to have during my school years.”
