SPOTLIGHT ON

HEALTH

Spring – a time of renewal, rejuvenation and optimism. As the Northern Hemisphere returns to warmth, sunshine, exercise bikes, cycling, swimming, holiday planning, etc., it’s time to think of energy, vitality and a healthy lifestyle. We all know that the most important relationship we can ever have is the one we have with ourselves. It defines everything about us – who we are, what we do, how successful we are, our health and so on. In future newsletters we’ll look at other aspects of this most important relationship – our finances, relationships, work and following our bliss. Hand-in-hand with self-acceptance is our relationship with our body. Through the Law of Life, (AKA the Law of Cause and Effect or the Law of Attraction, we understand that our bodies are the result of our beliefs. In other words, the state of our physical body is the result of what we both consciously and subconsciously believe about ourselves. The word ‘subconsciously’ is emphasised because none of us deliberately, or consciously, attracts dis-ease. It all comes down to what’s going on inside of us. There’s a very real and obvious link between the mind and the body, so let’s explore that relationship. But first, how do we define health? We’ve all heard sayings such as, ‘a healthy mind, a healthy body’, and ‘our body is a reflection of our thoughts’. Health is both a mental and physical state and since we know that effect, which is the physical, is the manifestation of cause, which is our mentality, then healing has to first take place in the mind. There’s a common misconception about health and healing. Some people see an effect they don’t like and so they try to change, or treat, the effect instead of the cause. Until recently many in the medical profession thought along similar lines but fortunately more and more are now thinking in terms of wholeness and realising that there is often an emotional cause that needs to also be treated. Law always creates according to what is going on in our minds. Since it’s our mind that both creates and controls the state of our bodies, then healing has to begin there. And, importantly, we can only stay healed for as long as we have a consciousness of health.

A word about pain Pain is an out-picturing; it’s a not too subtle message that something’s wrong. It’s a wake-up call that something needs our attention. Pain is generally classified as physical or emotional. Physical pain is experienced when we have an accident. What are accidents? Often, they’re events we attract when we’re not paying attention. But, there’s another type of physical pain that isn’t the result of an accident but is the result of something going on in the body and manifesting in ways such as the failure of an organ. What we call ‘serious illnesses’ are indeed examples of the body not being at ease with itself. There are cases where repressed anger or other ‘blocks’ such as fear, resentment, criticism, jealousy, etc. have slowly built up over the years causing the joints of the body to become arthritic, or to express itself as cancer or in some other debilitating form. In addition to physical pain there’s emotional pain. This is not so much a pain that we feel with our body, but a pain that we feel with our entire being. Rejection and feelings of being unwanted or unloved can contribute to a feeling of unworthiness. At these times our job is to get back into the knowing of who we are, building up our self-esteem. Our emotional states influence and affect our immune system and alter its chemical structure. There are estimates that up to 70% of all dis-eases could be the result of suppressed emotions. It’s our choice as to whether emotions are expressed or left unexpressed but, expressing them, is certainly far healthier than suppressing them.

Beliefs We tell people our beliefs every day. Just listen to some of them: - “It runs in the family.” - “It’s going around.” - “It’s the flu season again.” - “Well we all have to die of something at some point.” - “It’s because you’re not eating properly.” - “You’re getting older you know.” Don’t you just love that last one! These are all affirmations; they’re beliefs that some people say every day and so you can imagine how their lives might be as a result. Wouldn’t it be far better, and healthier, to hear and say things like: - “I’m feeling healthy.” - “I’m choosing to be happy.” - “I’m always feeling protected.” - “I appreciate myself and everyone I meet.” - “Life is wonderful.” - “I love life.” Can’t you feel yourself feeling better as you say these things? Positive affirmations do something to our chemistry which in turns acts upon our physical body. Let’s speak positive words about our health and believe that they’ll happen. It’s up to each of us to make that decision. As someone once said, “We’re not our bodies but our bodies are a manifestation of our thoughts.” We need to remember that the condition of our body is the end result of our thinking.

Wholeness The spiritual concept of wholeness is that our true or natural state is that we are, always have been, and always will be whole, complete and perfect. And so, in that sense, our true selves are healthy. Any seeming evidence to the contrary is because we’ve unconsciously chosen to think in another way, in ways that deny the truth of who we are. And it’s safe to say that for 90% of the time it’s our unconscious or undirected thoughts that produce unwanted circumstances in our lives. When we look at how stalactites and stalagmites are formed, we can see similarities in our own lives. Stalactites slowly drip from above and each drip helps the stalagmite below to grow upwards. It’s a constant drip …… drip …… drip. It’s a painstakingly slow process. In our own lives, it’s the false beliefs, the false affirmations such as, “I’m feeling sick”, or “It’s my arthritis”, that are the drips that are building up the stalagmites and slowly over time the arthritis builds in the joints because of years of criticism or self-condemnation, or even refusing to move from a climate that you know is not healthy. There are many reasons for things happening but there can be no single reason without a thought accepting it. Whatever we consciously accept is passed to our subconscious which then acts upon it. Success, whether it is in health or in any other area, requires a will, a commitment, to keep affirming, to see the desired end result. It’s the drip …… drip ……drip of constant positive thought. It’s that man who, in the movie THE SECRET, walked out of hospital after being told he wouldn’t walk again. It’s the woman who after three months of affirming health was told by specialists that there was no longer any sign of cancer in her body. It’s the person who suffered from diabetes all their life to awaken one morning to find they were perfectly healed.

Some final words Ernest Holmes, the founder of SCIENCE OF MIND, had a particularly meaningful saying: “There is nothing to heal, only the truth to be revealed.” What is this ‘truth’ he refers to? Basically, it’s that in Spirit we are already whole, perfect and complete and the more we embody that idea in our minds the quicker it expresses in our outer appearances. In truth there is neither lack nor separation. If there is the appearance of lack or what is called ‘ill health’ we know that we have a misconnection in our mind and so we work on that. In closing, let me ask, “What is the state of your health?” Whatever the appearance, there is a way to change it. Knowing that our health is the expression of our beliefs and attitudes, can you see where your thoughts may have demonstrated in ways that you now wish to change? If in the future you were to get sick, do you now know how you’ll react differently than you have done in the past? For change to take place, for a curing of a dis-ease, a mental equivalent has to be provided of what we truly desire to experience. We come up with a picture of what we do want, and we keep our attention on it. If we falter, we don’t give up, we keep on and according to our belief it is done unto us. Whether we call this belief, prayer or faith is not important. What is important is that we have the conviction of the healing we wish to experience; that we have that mental equivalent; that we believe all things are possible. The relationship between our mind and our body is one of the most important relationships we can ever have. Our thoughts are the mechanisms which decide how our lives are going to outpicture. Whether we realise it or not, our thoughts control what is going on in our body all the time. Understanding this relationship is one of the most vital and practical things we can ever do because we are demonstrating and experiencing it every second of every day. AFFIRMATIONS FOR HEALTH

Life-threatening situations (e.g. cancer, HIV, stroke, heart attack)

My body is an ever-evolving miracle of creation; strong and resilient. I know that every cell, organ, system, function and action is in perfect alignment. Every part of me is animated, maintained and sustained by a healing power which is perfect in all its activity. I’m so grateful for my perfect health! My heart is synchronised with the rhythm of the universe. It beats perfectly. It does its job perfectly. It’s healthy and vigorous. I am grateful for my perfectly functioning heart! I’m one with the infinite flow of life. There is no confusion or congestion in my physical body. I’m totally relaxed, at peace and visualising the right and perfect outcome in every situation. Regardless of what’s going on in the world around me I always have a choice about how I see it. I choose happiness over any temporary appearance to the contrary. I choose health and vibrancy and experience them right now. I’m so grateful for my perfect health.

Specific physical conditions

I look at my body as a smoothly functioning machine. Every system functions perfectly, every cell, nerve, bone and organ is invigorated, and every joint fully flexible. I am so grateful for my perfect health! I visualise every cell of my body as whole and healthy, sustaining and maintaining every function in perfect order. I have perfect circulation, respiration and digestion. I am so grateful for my vibrant health! I know that my lungs and respiratory system are unique and magnificent working machines. I treat them with respect by filtering out any pollution and mentally picturing them as the perfectly functioning systems that they truly are.

Emotional situations

I’m mentally, emotionally, and physically strong and healthy. Any appearance to the contrary is a passing thing and I affirm permanent perfect health. I am so grateful for my perfect health! Today I’m inspired to see and experience a greater good in every aspect of life. I know that wherever I go I take my thoughts with me, so I now choose to enjoy the journey. I say “Yes” to a greater experience of peace and freedom. I say, “Yes” to harmony with everyone and everything. I say, “Yes” to a greater acceptance of my true worth and value to myself and the world around me. I am emotionally free and secure. Life is wonderful!

Depression / anxiety

I’m in charge of my life and I make a conscious choice to feel happy right now. I desire to experience nothing but a continuation of the joy of this moment. I am joyful. I am totally relaxed and at peace. I am happy. I am healthy, strong and free. Each day I awake in joy and affirm that it’s a wonderful day. As I keep my thoughts centred in and on peace I realise I have no time to think otherwise. Affirming peace, serenity and peace of mind I feel a greater acceptance of myself and the world around me. I’m now free from any limiting thoughts.

Seeming hereditary situations

I look past any appearance or symptom of dis-ease and see the truth about the situation. I claim and accept health, wholeness, vitality and energy. I know there is no power in precedence and so I release the past, and the stories of the past, and choose to live healthily and happily in the now. I do not buy into any false belief of hereditary dis-ease, or into any seemingly negative views held by the media or others. I accept my own freedom, my own health and my own happiness. I am grateful for the perfect health I am experiencing right at this moment!

Vitality / energy

I support my body’s vitality with healthy thoughts, healthful nutrients and plenty of rest. Each day I awake renewed, refreshed and revitalised. I am grateful for my perfect health! I know that my physical body is a mirror of my inner thoughts. I always think in terms of perfect health and vitality. I claim perfect health and vitality. I now experience perfect health and vitality!

Sleep

Knowing that my thoughts determine whether or not I experience health and happiness in my life I affirm, believe and accept that I am healthy and happy now and always. Each night I go to sleep easily and sleep peacefully. I awaken refreshed, revitalised, recharged and full of gratitude. Sleep renews and revitalises my mind, body and emotions. Each night I enjoy a full night’s sleep and awaken feeling fully alert and appreciative of life. I’m grateful for the full and good night’s sleep that I enjoy each and every night.

Feeling uneasy, not at ease

I’m always at ease with myself and the world around me. I look past any appearance or symptom of dis-ease and see the truth about the situation. I claim and accept health, wholeness, vitality and energy. This is the truth about me. I was born to have fun! My perfectly functioning physical body and positive outlook on life ensures that each moment is a moment of joy and appreciation. I’m so grateful for my perfect health! I live, move and have my being in peace. As I affirm this I feel at ease with the world around me and, more importantly, I feel at ease with myself.
