Cars Go Electric The world is embracing electric cars, but how ready is Nigeria? In this report, ANGEL JAMES, finds answers, even as some classic cars are going electric.

E

lectric cars are taking the world by storm, and it seems Nigeria may not be ready for it yet. From modern to classic, cars are assuming a new form of engineering with electricity. It is now becoming common in Europe and some parts of the United States, to see charging stations at shopping malls for cars. Owners can conveniently charge their vehicles while shopping. Automobile manufacturers are already responding to this trend. For example, Jaguar has upgraded its classic E-Type Zero as a complete car package based on a fully restored 1960s original costing around N376,710,990 (£850,000) or as an upgrade to an owner's existing car. Meanwhile, Aston Martin has created an electric power train for the rare and valuable DB6 Mk2 Volante. Just 38 of which were built, Prince of Wales owns one of them. As with the E-Type Zero, the Aston Martin conversion is entirely, relatively and easily reversible to preserve the originality of the car. The electric DB6 has been developed in association with Aston Martin's broader EV (electric vehicle) strategy, which has already seen the creation of the Rapide E model and the revival of sister marque Lagonda, which will come to market as an all-electric SUV shortly. Andy Palmer, Lagonda president and group CEO, tells FT's How To Spend It that the move to engineer the electric DB6 and “protect the maker's treasured

heritage” was brought about by the impending threat to restrict the use of classics due to environmental and social pressures. Paul Spires, president of Aston Martin Works heritage department, which built the car, describes the experience of driving the DB6 EV as “unique” and something that will appeal to many enthusiasts, especially those who want to use their cars in urban environments. “Given the historical signi cance of these cars, it's vital that any EV conversion is sympathetic to the integrity of the original model. The cassette system is the perfect solution, reassuring owners of knowing their car is future-proofed and socially responsible. Yet remains an authentic Aston Martin that can have its original powertrain re tted if desired. Collectors are also adding another dimension to their collections by commissioning EV-converted heritage cars.” Although regular Aston Martins are known for their high performance, battery-powered versions will be even quicker due to the “instant” nature of electric motors, which provides maximum torque (or “pulling power”) from a standstill. Unlike a combustion engine, which needs to reach a certain number of revolutions per minute to achieve motion. Aston Martin and Jaguar are not alone in their exploration of classic conversions. An increasing

www.luxuryreporter.ng

Auto

number of independent engineering workshops are springing up around the world that will build such cars to order. Oz Motors of Tokyo, for example, specializes in installing electric power in classic Volkswagen Beetles at the cost of around £20,000. At the same time, Zelectric of San Diego converts not only Beetles but other VW models, such as the Trekker, Karmann Ghia, Variant and Microbus, as well as classic Porsches, such as the 356, 911, 912 and 914. It's in the UK, however, that the electric-classic movement is forging ahead, as people look to own cars that combine old-school looks with modern performance while currently being exempt from the charges increasingly applied to combustion-engine vehicles. There is global attention shifting towards vehicles with zero and low carbon emissions, as part of measures to facilitate the transition to a global clean energy economy. In Nigeria, owning an electric car is more of a luxury, not yet a necessity. Cletus Aregbesola, a car expert, give reasons why Nigeria is not ready for this global shift. He argues Nigeria is not yet ready for an electric car. “Electric cars are good; they have so many bene ts in terms of fuel consumption, speed, and engine capacity. But we are not ready.” He says many things go into marketing electric cars. First, a stable electricity supply is required for electric vehicles to function efficiently.

8

www.luxuryreporter.ng

THE LUXURY REPORTER

“We need a very constant power supply, and that is the basic need for that kind of car. Electricity is taking over cars with fuel consumption.” Besides, he says there is a need for charging port as electric cars require charging at the interval. “We don't have any plan for this yet in the country. We don't have that now. In terms of expertise, we are not yet at that level to welcome electric cars in Nigeria. It requires good road system. Electric cars are very light not as rugged as diesel or fuel-powered cars. The government needs to make policies toward electric cars.” Experts say Nigeria may never be ready for the global shift until the government starts to make deliberate efforts towards providing constant power supply. “We do not need to manufacture those cars; it is just to bring them in. But if we have a constant power supply, all other necessities will not be a problem. Whenever Nigeria is ready to have a constant power supply, we can start talking about electric vehicles. If the technical expertise, power supply, is available then they are better viable alternative means to what we have now, there is no much challenge in terms of the built.” The car experts believe that electric cars are better; that is why the developed countries are going for it. However, the only snag they argue is the high temperature in Nigeria. “We have a very high temperature that will have an

impact on battery life; it is not solar, nor hybrid. Extreme heat might reduce the battery life span. Electric cars are far better; they run faster, the maintenance is minimal, servicing is out of it. With electric cars, the warranty will extend as long as ten years whereas fueled cars might extend just three years. Electric cars are a better option, and with the components, features and information it can provide it is a better option,” adds Aregbesola.

The fact that electric cars are cheaper to maintain has necessitated its acceptability in most parts of Europe even though it is expensive to purchase. “It might seem expensive because it is new, but when you are looking at the cost of a car, you don't just look at the price but the maintenance. Electric cars are far cheaper, more beautiful and its performance is sweeter, it almost soundless and a better option.”

Buying A Suit On Savile Row? What You Need To Know

Known as the world's most sartorial street in Mayfair, central London, Savile Row is a name identical with masculine elegance, time-honoured tradition, and discreet luxury. It's the place to go for stylish suits made by the most highly skilled craftsmen. Here are quick steps to buying a suit on London's Savile Row says ADEDOYIN JOHNSON.

B

uying a suit on London's famous Savile Row does not come cheap. The new in ltration on the Row, Ready-to-wear suits, start around £700. If you prefer made-tomeasure, you may double your budget. However, if you need the full bespoke experience,

18 www.luxuryreporter.ng

plan for a budget of £4,000, but £10,000 is not uncommon, depending on the material you prefer for your suit and the level handwork required by the tailors. The styles on Savile Row that will give you the structured English look can be divided into three:

THE LUXURY REPORTER

The Traditional Cut is the oldest style on the Row. It is known by a strong shoulder, a chest that ts close to the body, a nipped waist and a relatively long jacket that ares slightly at the bottom. It is very attering and close to military tailoring. The traditional cut can be very attering on slight men. It sometimes comes with a longer jacket which is rather unfashionable now but adds height to a man where the shoulders add width. The Drape Cut has a softer shoulder. It creates the imprint of strength by cutting the shoulder a little wider and using a little excess fabric in the chest and back. It has a larger sleeve, making it the most comfortable of the cuts, yet not the sharpest. Often, the very lightweight canvas is used for the coats; it is cut on the bias to allow softness and natural movement. Minimum padding is incorporated to the shoulders, creating a very natural silhouette. The Exaggerated Cut is far more modern, and it dates back to the 1960s and 1970s. This look was pioneered by Tommy Nutter who changed the way men looked at Savile Row when he dressed The Beatles. While still retaining the craft of Savile Row, the cut of jackets is larger and comes with upturned shoulders, lots of structure and

Fashion

exaggerated lapels. Usually, the shoulder is the emphasis—then sharp architectural lines, and a long lapel that is long, low and leafy. In the case of bespoke garments, over 20 measurements must be taken before a cutter can create an individual card pattern. All of the company's tailoring is carried out in-house at 11 Savile Row. It takes 100 hours or more to create a perfectly tting suit of superb quality and craftsmanship. One of the foremost and most expensive bespoke tailors on Savile Row is Huntsman. The classic Huntsman outline includes a very structured shoulder work, high armhole and a signature de ned waist. The classic silhouette was developed when the house's cutters spliced the coat of traditional riding attire and a dinner suit. Another house detail synonymous with Huntsman is a awless preference for singlebuttoning, to highlight the highly guaranteed t. The unique experience of choosing fabric and getting measured is worth every pound and every minute you invest in selecting a suit. When it comes to bespoke, you are not just a client; you are a creator.

no Essien grew up reading about successful women. Their success stories are high points that propelled her to chart a career path. She started Rheytrak, a company that deals in car tracking devices after her friend's valuables were stolen in a robbery incident. The incident got her thinking about the best solution. “I wondered how one spends so much money acquiring a car and just like that the car is taken away from you,” she says. “Amid the problem, I saw a potential solution, connected all the dots and that led to the birth of Rheytrak twelve years ago.” Through its many solutions, Rheytrak has recovered several stolen vehicles in different locations in Nigeria and outside Nigeria. “The jubilation that accompanies a car recovery is always overwhelming. The satisfaction and the joy on the owners face for me is priceless and worth

every effort my team has put in,” she adds. Part of her marketing strategy is to expose her business to the public as her services are well sought after. “We provide a solution to a nagging problem and partner with people and companies in allied businesses. Again, our highly satis ed customers usually do the advertising for us.” She tells me her unique selling point is the customer's service. “We do not just sell a product to you and go away, we are with you all the way and give you value for your money. We are available at any time of the day. We patiently educate you on how to take control of your car and how to do the various checks yourself, giving you the con dence that, “yes I am fully in charge of my asset” kind of feeling. themselves. In the event of theft or any such thing we go all out and give you all the support you need until you repossess your car. Satisfying them the way we do, they tell others about us. We work closely with the police in the event of theft.” Operating in a male-dominated industry may have not been easy for Essien but she has been forging ahead and breaking new grounds. “I fare very well although my industry is maledominated and I am the rst and only female CEO in the industry. I am actively encouraging other females to come in. Having said that, my gender has never been an issue for me. God has given me brains and I use it just as He gave to the males. You will agree with me that the brain is not a gender determining organ. I put in my best at work.” Her driving force has been her faith in the Almighty God, her family support, the education and exposure she has been privileged to have. “The yawning need of the service I am providing

and the satisfaction I see on my clients' faces and the vivid expression of that satisfaction in terms of letters of appreciation, plaques and awards that we receive. And honestly just that I can bring joy and smiles to people's faces.” Essien grew up in a very close-knit family made up of her father, an Engineer by profession and a very ne Journalist by occupation. Her mother, a trained nurse (now retired), an entrepreneur and also studying for her PhD degree. Her older sister, a nance executive living in England with her family and her brother, a customs officer. Her family has expanded with the addition of spouses and children. “I grew up with so much love and care, my parents taught us to put God at the centre and made us understand we could be absolutely anything we wanted to be and there are no limits to what we can achieve,” she adds. She says her life philosophy is to love the Lord with all her heart; put Him at the centre. “There's absolutely nothing I can't do. The lessons life has thought me is to be kind to others.”
