a more g lamorous image for c limate p rotection Climate protection and energy effi ciency are the name of the game at Energie Agentur.NRW. For more than twenty years now we have been working for the government of North Rhine-West phalia to make energy use in the Rhine and Ruhr regions more efficient, modern, and sustainable. An energy consultant will take various factors into account, consider ing energy technology, savings potential, and cost calculation. From this perspective, facilities that are normally considered to be completely unrelated, such as a factory that produces screws and a swimming pool or a coffee roasting plant and a kindergar ten, show a surprising degree of similarity. Assessing energy use has given us a be hind-the-scenes view of many compa nies – though we have yet to stand on a dance floor in the course of our duties! Thanks to Kölner c/o pop, climate protection is no longer an unknown concept in the world of clubs and event management. In 2010 we established contact with the Green Music Initiative here in Cologne, and as a consequence the Green Music BBQ will be getting back to its roots in 2012.

environment? This is the central question guiding the cooperative venture between EnergieAgentur.NRW and the Green Music Initiative. Our joint approach aims at taking effective action, establishing a knowledge base, and attracting new part ners. Six clubs from the region followed this route in 2012 in the pilot project Green Club Index.NRW. Over the period of a year we joined forces to measure their energy consumption, check out facilities and operating procedures, and devise measures to reduce CO2 emissions. In a cold storage unit for drinks or in the shafts of a ventilation system, the reality of climate protection soon becomes very apparent. And once technology, energy, and beverage suppliers get involved, ener gy efficiency becomes a highly complex matter. The results of the project were encouraging; even clubbing can go green. Yet if we wish to achieve the CO2 goals we have set for ourselves, we still have a long way to go. Switching to a sustainable industrial culture is not an easy task, espe cially in a region where for many decades everything revolved around coal and steel. Climate protection therefore needs creati vity and glamour if we are to get those on board who do not view the world from an energy expert’s perspective and for whom energy efficiency is anything but cool. We are therefore eagerly anticipating the posi tive energy emanating from green music and look forward to engaging in an innova tive partnership with clubs and artists.

What needs to happen so that the posi tive energy generated at clubs and festivals does not have a negative impact on the

Already for the 9th time we are hosting the c/o pop Festival and Convention this year. Over the stretch of five days renowned as well as upcoming national and international musicians perform 50 shows at more than 20 different venues giving the festival its diverse and lively character. In this creative ambiance the C’n’B Convention takes place as second element of the c/o pop. Within 60 discussion rounds and forums experts of the scene exchange their expertises, generate inspirations for new projects and establish networks as first steps for solutions that form the entertainment industry of tomorrow. We regard the direct interaction etween the different actors of the b creative industries to be crucial to ensure an ongoing development with a merger of the most up to date knowledge those experts have.

green music bbq 2012

The past years have shown that sus tainability increasingly becomes an in evitable element of the entertainment scene. Many music festival organisers have already shown that sustainable measures can and should be implemented to react on the climatic developments that affect us all. This is even more expedient, as the unique possibility is given to address a broad audience with the exemplary behaviour shown at these events and to therefore make it their matter of concern as well. We are honoured to be the host of the Green Music BBQ this year. Partnering with the Green Music Initiative and having many other representatives of the creative industries and of the global festi val network "Europareise" present at the c/o pop, who already have experiences with sustainability or interested in sup porting this issue in future, is very much in line with our approach of an active idea exchange between the actors of the scene. We believe that all participants of the Green Music BBQ can profit of this excellent opportunity and hope that many new ideas and solutions will emerge from this meeting.

Foreword

Jacob Bilabel

Founder of the Green Music Initiative

Europe is burning. The financial crisis seems to devastate our societies at a pace no one would have thought of some years ago. All over the world people are gathering to stop this system from destroy ing our countries and our solidarity. It’s not easy talking about climate change these days. Nonetheless, I am sure, the changing climate is a sympton of the cause that lies at the very heart of the problem: The illusion that industrial growth is endless, that resources are limit less. And that we can carry on forever with ‚business as usual’.

How can we accelerate moving our societies towards this dream? The social change challenge is a complex one. It demands a thorough understanding of what’s going on around us as well as cooperation between science, politics, consumers, business and civil society alike. It is therefore essential to build a common language around the challenges we face, the options we have and the life we want to live as individuals and as a society. In this regard we should develop a new Low Carbon Culture. There is no time to lose, but so much to win for all of us.

I started my career in the managment of the biggest major in the music industry. At the time, people could already foresee what digitisation would mean for the busi ness. But most of us decided to believe in the fairytale I mentioned: nothing would be big enough to shake our world, we would not need to change our way of doing things. We can now see what effect this denial has had on today’s music industry. I regularly meet people who don’t elieve in climate change at all. It’s the b same kind of mentality I witnessed in the music business ten years ago. The more nihilists I meet, the less I care about changing their minds. Instead I ask them the following questions: How do you want to live in the future?

Green Club Index Clubs are an essential part of the music and entertainment industry for the organisers and audience alike. On the same time their energy consumption levels are immense. Based on that it should be inevitable to take action in minimising them, given the topicality of environmental and climate protection issues. The project partners of the Green Club Index (GCI) are pioneers in bringing the expertise of music, club and energy specialists together to collaboratively and actively approach this matter. True to the motto: "Rave to save the planet" www.greenclubindex.de

Clubs & Energy – Status Quo An average club or disco in Germany has an annual electricity consumption of 120,000 kWh/year. That is equivalent to an annual consumption of more than 30 threeperson households, or 67 tons of CO2 per year. There are approximately 5,500 clubs and discos spread throughout Germany. When considering the whole EU-27 member states the overall number of existing clubs amounts to 19,000. The average capacity is 470 visitors translating to a total energy use within the club sector of approximately 2,280 GWh/year of electricity (equal to two nuclear power plants) and 3,304 GWh/year of gas.* Together, these clubs contribute a large amount of Greenhouse gases to the environment, but unfortunately, the issue of energy efficiency has never before been properly addressed in the entertainment industry.

Energy Conservation is not a topic (yet) – WHY? Many reasons contribute to that. The most important ones are: 1. Many club operators have a lack of knowledge and are mostly unaware that high energy consumption creates a major impact on the environment. 2. The amount of reductions possible and the connected major cost saving opportunities are often misjudged. 3. Even if a general consciousness about these issues exists, actually taking the first step often creates new obstacles and questions: what are reasonable measures that can be taken to make clubs more energy efficient? How can they be implemented?

4. So far professional energy consultants offer no adequate proposals that are particularly developed for the club scene. The energy experts simply do not have the expertise needed in this particular field.

The Aim of the Green Club Index Project The Green Club Index (GCI) addresses the big potential of emission reductions in the club scene. Initial experiences have been gained designing energy profiles to fit the specific characteristics of clubs. Currently, several pilot projects in a national and international context are planned and being conducted as part of the Green Club Index Project. These ‘best practises’ showcase that energy audits in clubs are useful and necessary. In this way other interested club operators are encouraged to ask for energy advice themselves, which consequently raises the request of adequate offers from energy consultants. So in the long run, the Green Club Index Project aims at stimulating a new market for energy audits in the club scene. The Project also offers a great opportunity to spice up the technical concepts of energy efficiency and energy conservation when bringing it together with the inherent coolness and glamour of the club scene.

The Index – What is it?

Results

The GCI is determined by the ratio of annual energy consumption and the annual number of visitors. That Index is a simplification tool that a club owner can use to compare their energy needs with other venues. Through this thorough evaluation using GCI, problematic areas can be easily identified within their clubs. Subsequently, the Green Music Initiative (GMI) in cooperation with qualified energy advisors would develop a meaningful and individualized package for implementation by clubs. This measure focuses primarly on energy/power, but solutions for other aspects of sustainability can be incorporated.

Numerous measures have been initiated by the energy audits resulting in an absolute reduction (of all six clubs combined) of 83.000 kWh/year electricity and 19.000 kWh/year heating. This has saved approximately 63 tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere. On the financial side cost savings of approx. 26.000 € were achieved. Three clubs even switched to green energy providers and were able to realise cheaper tarifs.

The first pilot project – Green Club Index NRW The pilot project started with six clubs in March 2011 in the state of North RhineWestphalia. Over 12 months the clubs received tailored energy advice at no charge. The challenges, results and successes were discussed at a workshop and two press conferences with important stakeholders (club owners, energy consultants, technical service providers, media). The project has received wide media coverage. The following clubs took part in the pilot project: • Bahnhof Langendreer (Bochum) • Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld (Köln) • Club Butan (Wuppertal) • Gloria (Köln) • Stereo (Bielefeld) • Ufer8 (Düsseldorf)

8–

What's next The insights and knowledge gained during the pilot phase will now be widley disseminated. The GMI and the Energie Agentur.NRW are developing two sub sequent modules. 1) Train-the-Trainer course This seminar will be implemented in North Rhine-Westfalia to enable energy consultants to gain the skills specific to energy audits in clubs. 2) Green Club Label A certification system for environmental friendly clubs will be developed, in response to the demands from clubs and venues that want to communicate their achievements to their audience.

EEMusic

Clubmob Berlin

EEMusic, short for ‘The European Initiative for Scaling Up Energy Efficiency in the Music Event Industry’, aims at tackling information barriers and increasing capacities for energy management in the music event sector. This attempt is undertaken to react to the increasing demand for a minimisation of the energy consumption and environmental impact of the scene, while providing the according actors in the scene with the strongly needed information and training to manage this challenge. The consortium is composed of the following renowned organisations: WIP – Renewable Energies, Green Music Initiative, Elevate, Witcher Agency, Julie’s Bicycle, Terra Systemics, United Partners, Ekodoma, Projects in Motion. The concept was recently proposed to the EU and the approval is awaited for November 2012.

The Green Music Initiative, sinnwerkstatt, MORGEN LANDE, Berlin Engergiecheck and the Jugend im Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz e.V. initiated the first Clubmob in 2011 in Berlin. The idea is based on the Carrotmob that implies the principle of buycott, the augmented purchase of goods from one particular business by a group of consumers, as reaction on a socially responsible action that was undertaken by that company. In the case of the Clubmob, the money raised through the attendance of the club goers is spent on an enhancement of sustainable actions carried out by the club. So far the Clubmob took place in the SO36 and the MIKZ in Berlin. www.clubmob.de

Organic Disco The idea of Organic Disco is to make it a climate-friendly dance event showing that having a good party and the thought of sustainability can go together.
