Dialogue Forum

Product Environmental Footprinting in the food and drink sector: Relevance for producer and retailer 16th January 2014, 10am-5pm Permanent representation of Saxony-Anhalt, Luisenstraße 18, 10117 Berlin Due to increased international interest the event now will be hold in English. The pilot projects of the first phase of the Environmental Footprinting Initiative in non-food product categories were already selected and started their work in November 2013. The next pilot phase starts in Mai 2014 with a special focus on food. The previous selected projects are, for instance, part of the following categories: laundry detergents, retailers, paper, t-shirts and shoes. Those sectors will develop rules that will make the application of environmental footprinting methods much more feasible, set benchmarks and define hotspots. Based on that a basis for possible regulatory procedures by the EU are established, moreover the implementation for companies will become much easier by applying key performance indicators and related methods. Michele Galatola (European Commission, DG Environment) announced that another 7-10 pilot projects will be launched in the food sector with the same goals as mentioned above. In May 2014 the particular product categories and sectors will be chosen. The call for tender opens at the start of 2014. Actors from the following area are explicitly addressed: •

Agriculture: plant production and livestock breeding

Food processing: food and beverages

Fertilisers and pesticides

Animal feed

Food packaging (including bio-plastics)

The communication among the different actors of the food sector have already started and first groups of interest have been formed. Experiences of the first round of applications can support the current process. An important foundation for the environmental footprint pilot phase of the food sector is the ENVIFOOD Protocol of the EU Food SCP Roundtable1. The full documents will be released in December 2013. On the occasion of the start of this second application phase the Platform for Climate Compatible Consumption Germany organises a dialogue forum with the title “Product Environmental Footprinting in the food sector: the relevance for its’ producers and retailers” in cooperation with the PEF World Forum. 1

A current version of the ENVIFOOD Protocol is available here: http://www.foodscp.eu/files/ENVIFOOD_Protocol_Vers_1.0.pdf

The goal is to give the actors of the food sector the possibility to gain in-depth information about the relevance of this EU initiative and to be able to evaluate it for their own work. Moreover, we would like to actively support the foundation of consortia and give an overview about the running processes.
