O
n Christmas mornings when I was growing up, my two brothers and I were expected to wait at the top of the stairs while my parents ensured all was set in the living room and plugged in the tree. While we always raced down as soon as we were allowed, there was no frenzy of tearing into presents. After the stockings had been emptied, my dad handed out the gifts under the tree one at a time; each would be unwrapped by the recipient while the rest of us looked on. When we got a little older, we would even pause for breakfast, content to unwrap the joy of the day as slowly as we opened our presents. At this time of year, we hear a lot about the benefits of slowing down and enjoying the season. My family and friends will tell you I can be a little Martha Stewart-esque in my holiday habits, but baking dozens of cookies to share, pulling out my trove of decorations,
14 OLD PORT

and filling my home with fresh greenery are all things that give me joy. So does lighting the Hanukkah candles with my Jewish husband, taking in at least one holiday concert, and strolling around downtown Portland to admire Pandora LaCasse’s fantastical light displays—all of which are less about doing and more about being in the moment. Another must is a visit to the Victoria Mansion, where for 34 years local designers have created spectacular decorations for its already opulent rooms (Christmas Comes to Victoria Mansion, page 48). If you haven’t seen this Portland historic and architectural treasure decked out in its holiday finery, put it on your list this year. As for my holiday shopping list, it’s nearly complete, thanks to the big, beautiful gift guide we put together for this issue (page 56). The dozens of submissions we received from local retailers and artisans reminded me again of the
extraordinary creativity in this city and state. Whether you visit their shops or order online, you should be able to find something special for everyone on your list. For all my Martha-esque tendencies, what I truly love about this season is the same sense of anticipation I had as a kid at the top of the stairs. The preparations and the planning, the doing and being, are all part of the prettily wrapped package. I hope the holidays bring you joy, and that you can savor every single minute.

I
moved to Portland nine years ago this month. My boyfriend (now husband) and I drove through the night from New York, our car packed with an air mattress and the essentials we would need for one night, before the moving truck with our two apartments’ worth of boxes and furniture would meet us at our new place the next morning. By the time we’d wake up, a blizzard would be in full swing, leaving a quickly accumulating blanket of snow on everything and our movers slipping and sliding everywhere. (They should have, our neighbors joked, come wearing some Bean boots.) We cruised into Portland after midnight that

first night, exhausted from the move and the nine-hour, traffic-filled drive. Despite this, we were hopped up on adrenaline, wide-eyed for the city we would come to call home. We drove along Commercial Street, and as the brick buildings came into view, so did a constellation of neon lights—the annual holiday installation that I now know is designed by Portland artist Pandora LaCasse. Coming from the city that never sleeps with its Times Square and 24/7 lights and buzz, we immediately felt welcomed by this vibrant display. Had we arrived at any other time of year, our grand entrance would’ve likely been a little less memorable. But that particular night, just a few days before Christmas with the city aglow, was a magical
start to our new life here. I’m excited to share our first-ever holiday issue of Old Port—with LaCasse’s now-familiar artistry gracing the cover—and I hope you enjoy all the bright spots this season brings you.

TAKE NOTICE NEWS, NOTES, AND MORE
This holiday season, Portland celebrates with a series of special events. On December 7, downtown shops stay open until 10 p.m. for MERRY MADNESS. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from November 24 to December 17, the city will also offer free horse-drawn carriage rides throughout downtown Portland. Other holiday favorites include rides on the Polar Express, the Portland Symphony Orchestra’s Magic of Christmas, and Kotzschmar Christmas with Cornils. USA Today has named Washington Avenue’s HARDSHORE DISTILLING COMPANY as the country’s best craft gin distillery. A panel of spirits experts partnered with USA Today’s 10Best editors to nominate 20 distilleries, and readers chose the winners through an online competition. SMARTASSET, a personal financial technology company, has chosen Portland as number six on its list of the top 10 minor league baseball cities or towns in the United States. In 2016, Portland was also ranked as the sixth best minor league town. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MAINE has unveiled a $15-million initiative to fund half the education and expenses of 100 students per year. Called the Promise Scholarship, the program aims to grant funding to students who would be the first generation of their family to attend college; other admittance criteria include demonstrated financial need and a recommendation from a youth organization. Almost 51 percent of USM students are the first generation of college attendees within their families. Portland developer Jim Brady and Press Hotel co-owners Dennis and Chris Ruppel have launched a hotel management firm called FATHOM COMPANIES, which now manages the Press Hotel and Union Restaurant. Fathom Companies plans to manage future hospitality projects, renovate historic real estate, and reposition hotel, office, residential, and mixed-use properties.

SPIRITS OF THE SEASON SAY CHEERS TO THE HOLIDAYS WITH FRESH TAKES ON FESTIVE COCKTAILS.
’Tis the season for catching up with friends over festive drinks. Portland has no shortage of spots for gathering, celebrating, and toasting. Our city is full of fine craft cocktails; here are a few of our seasonal favorites.
WOODFORD FOOD AND BEVERAGE FALLING STAR “If we have one place that’s our sweet spot, it’s simple, strong cocktails,” says owner Birch Shambaugh as he presents his holiday pick. The Falling Star is a cool, spicy, and subtly sweet blend of infused gin, lavenderhoney simple syrup and fresh lemon juice, garnished with star anise. The flavor is compelling and smooth, with hints of black pepper and turmeric, offset by the slightly floral notes of lavender and honey.
660 Forest Ave. | Portland 207.200.8503 woodfordfb.com
SONNY’S THE DARK AND HANDSOME You’ll find this one under the “Interesting” category on the Sonny’s cocktail menu. Bar manager Adam Sousa created this cold-weatherfriendly drink with bourbon, ruby port, a whole egg, Angostura bitters, and sugar, with a shaved chocolate garnish. “It’s a type of flip,” he says, “a cocktail that contains a whole egg, which thickens it and creates a foamy head as it settles.”

BLYTH AND BURROWS THE WHITE BISHOP As with most things at Blyth and Burrows, this cocktail has historical roots. “It’s a riff on the Smoking Bishop, a cocktail mentioned in Dickens’s A Christmas Carol,” says owner Josh Miranda. The deliciously updated drink features white port, dry curaçao, ginger and spiced pear liqueurs, and house-made cinnamon-spice syrup. A few drops of Owl and Whale persimmon bitters bring it all together. Creative director Michael Gatlin comments, “It’s light and crisp, unlike most traditional winter drinks.”
26 Exchange St. | Portland 207.613.9070 blythandburrows.com
EAST ENDER THE CIDER CAR This updated version of a sidecar is light, fizzy, and flavorful with cognac, cinnamon syrup, dry curaçao, and lemon juice, finished with Bantam Rojo hard cider. Janet Webber, general manager and creator of the drink, says, “The addition of the cider warms up all the other flavors. I like the idea of a spritzy, light cocktail for the holidays.”

LITTLE GIANT HOT BUTTERED RUM This newcomer to the West End serves up Hot Buttered Rum for the whole table in a sleek, stainless carafe. It’s a rich, soothing mixture of butter, ice cream, brown sugar, Plantation rum, and plenty of spices. The aroma itself is intoxicating with the scent of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. “It warms you from the inside out,” says Max Overstrom-Coleman, Little Giant’s bar manager.
211 Danforth St. | Portland 207.747.5045 littlegiantmaine.com
UNION THE FIG LEBOWSKI Smooth and smoky best describes this libation created by bartender Charlotte Whitaker. The glass is overturned atop a smoking sprig of rosemary before she adds figinfused bourbon, fig puree, lemon juice, and honey water. A little prosecco adds just enough bubble to make it fabulously festive.

eaning forward, arms on legs, a man observes the passersby on the cobblestone streets outside the window. A row of calendars adorns the wall behind him. Nearby, a turquoise station wagon with wood-paneled doors, carrying a pair of painted surfboards on its roof, is heading toward a weathered sign. This is the dreamland gift world called Abacus: We are the passersby, and the man is a figure made of wire. The station wagon is toddler-sized. The sign reads, “We travel the world over in search of what we need, and return home to find it.” Abacus cofounders Dana Heacock and Sal Scaglione have provided a home for art and handcrafted items for more than four decades. They now have stores in five Maine locations. Heacock and Scaglione met in 1969 as first-year students at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence. Heacock was taking art courses. Scaglione, who grew up in Ohio, was studying architecture. “I used to lie on my stomach in the living room and pretend I was designing things with undersides of furniture,” says Scaglione. “Putting things together and building things mentally and physically with little parts—thinking there must be something wrong with me. Until I went to RISD, where I found people who thought like I did.” On a break from school in 1971, the pair travelled to Bennington, Vermont; Heacock’s family had moved there from Farmington. There they opened their first store, in an eightfoot-wide space that had previously been a taxi-dispatch stand. To stock it, they convinced their fellow RISD students to sell their art on consignment. “We had no money,” says Scaglione. “We cobbled together the interior by taking out a staircase, and our landlady gave us permission to take down her chicken coop—we DECEMBER // 2017

used the boards to cover the walls.” They called the store Abacus. “We liked the idea of the texture and the visuals of an abacus,” says Scaglione. “We joked about it, because it began with an A and a B, and I said we can always be first in the phone book.” Ironically, Abacus did not have a listing in the telephone directory, because they could not afford a phone. “There was a phone booth outside our door, and we gave people that number,” says Scaglione. “People walking by would hear the phone ringing and answer it, and somebody would say, ‘You see that little door over there, could you go in and ask the two guys in there if they could come out to the phone?’” Back at RISD, Heacock convinced Scaglione to accompany him on a visit to his home state. Born at Portland General Hospital (now Maine Medical Center), Heacock grew up summering at his grandparents’ house on Ocean Point in Boothbay Harbor. Heacock and Scaglione borrowed a Volkswagen Beetle that belonged to their classmate’s boyfriend, and headed up the coast on a bitter February day. Heacock thought they could sleep at his grandparents’ house. Unfortunately, it was boarded up, and the key was nowhere to be found. They drove around in the car all night, in order to stay warm. “As we left Boothbay Harbor, I said, ‘I 42 OLD PORT

really did love it, and I’ll be back again, I’m sure,’” says Scaglione. Scaglione and Heacock soon opened their first Maine store in Boothbay Harbor. For several years, they lived in the 150-squarefoot stockroom in the back of the store. “We used to take our showers down at the local marina, at the outdoor pay showers, because we didn’t have those facilities in our building,” says Scaglione. “Every morning we’d take our quarters and go down. If the water was cold, it didn’t matter, because we only allotted one quarter for the day. That was it.” Abacus became known for high-quality products—jewelry, glass lamps, and handcrafted wooden boxes—many of which were made by local artisans. Customers bought them not only for themselves, but also as gifts for weddings, birthdays, and baby showers. Their success allowed Scaglione and Heacock to move to a larger store in Boothbay Harbor, and eventually expand to locations in Portland, Freeport, and Kennebunkport. Scaglione indulged his early love of architecture to participate in designing and building these spaces—each of which has its own distinct style. With its exposed-brick interior walls, the store in Portland has an urban feel, while the
Freeport store resembles a classic Maine cottage. The latest location is in Ogunquit, in a space that used to house a restaurant. “It’s been kind of fun being in Ogunquit because now it feels like we’re the anchor store right in the center of town,” says Heacock. “In a town like Freeport with 300 national retailers, we still feel like the two little kids playing store.” Heacock has continued to engage in the artistic pursuits that first captivated him as a child. “When I was probably 13, 14 years old, I used to do charcoal drawings of area lighthouses and sell them,” he says. “My mom was a big influence on me. She was always painting and exhibiting her paintings in local outdoor artist shows.” Heacock creates the popular Abacus calendars, as well as fine art prints that are sold across the country. Heacock and Scaglione still work in their stores regularly, spending time with customers and coworkers who, after almost half a century, have become friends. “What we do feels like this wonderful lifelong hobby,” says Heacock. He and Scaglione find satisfaction in knowing that they are making art accessible by offering pieces to fit any budget. “As the world moves more and more into a very techy place,” says Scaglione, “people are craving things that have a human connection.”

CHRISTMAS COMES TO
VICTORIA MANSION by
E
Susan Axelrod Photography courtesy of Victoria Mansion
laborately hand-painted wall and ceiling decorations, heavily fringed drapery, and highly detailed woodwork are just a few of the elements that make Portland’s Victoria Mansion a prime example of the lavish decor that defines the period. Built between 1858 and 1860 as a summer home, the museum—a National Historic Landmark—is especially opulent at Christmastime, when local designers festoon its rooms with holiday displays reflecting a theme. The twelve designers, many of whom participate year after year, have been working in the mansion since November 1, decorating trees, fireplace mantels, and more with their interpretation of this year’s theme: “Christmas in the City by the Sea.” They finished just before Thanksgiving, in time for Christmas at Victoria Mansion to open to the public on Black Friday, November 24. The decorations will stay in place through January 7. “In four weeks, we’re going to see upwards of 10,000
people go through the house—nearly a third of our annual visitation,” says Victoria Mansion executive director Thomas Johnson. On this late October day, boxes of Christmas decorations—bound for the museum’s gift shop downstairs—already surround the conference table where I’m chatting with Johnson and director of development Sam Heck on the second floor of the museum’s carriage house. “It’s an interesting choice of theme, because the owners of the home didn’t have any direct connection to the nautical trade,” says Heck. “We’re looking for the designers to take a fairly broad interpretation, talking about maritime trade as it relates to the mansion is really talking about Portland and its wealth, and why Portland’s here.” Each designer is responsible for a certain space in the house, and some request the same space every year, while others like to move around. Dan Kennedy of Harmon’s Floral Company has participated in all 34
seasons. “The staff is as interested to see what they’re going to do as our visitors are,” says Johnson. The rooms and spaces are so ornate in themselves it’s a real challenge for them to come up with designs that stand on their own—they don’t overwhelm the rooms, but they enhance them.” Victorians “invented” the secular celebration of Christmas as we know it today. Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, introduced Great Britain to the German tradition of Christmas trees when he installed one at Buckingham Palace in 1840, a practice that quickly migrated across the Atlantic. Sending Christmas cards, and the story of Santa Claus with his gift-laden sleigh are other traditions that date to the Victorian era. For Christmas at Victoria Mansion, however, the designers are not bound by history. “It’s really interesting to see how they reinterpret the designs, says Heck. “It fosters a conversation between the

contemporary designs that they’re utilizing and the mansion’s original decor.” In addition to being open for daily visitors to see the decorations, Victoria Mansion hosts several public holiday events, including a gala to kickoff the season and “Five Dollar First Friday,” when the $16 admission fee ($14 for seniors and AAA members) is reduced to $5—the only time all year the museum participates in Portland’s First Friday Art Walk. Every Wednesday beginning November 29, children ages three to five are invited to Stories on the Staircase, a free event that also includes a mini-tour of the mansion. On December 2, Christmas with Mr. Dickens features British actor Andrew Harris in character as the Victorian author, and dancers from the Portland Ballet will perform scenes from The

Victorian Nutcracker at an event on December 3. “The stage setting for The Victorian Nutcracker is actually based on interiors of Victoria Mansion,” says Johnson. Visiting Victoria Mansion during the holiday season is a tradition for many local families, but there are still those every year discovering it for the first time. “I always tell people who visit at Christmas they should come back in the summer because it’s a totally different house,” says Johnson. “A couple of Christmases ago, a guy who had lived on Park Street—a block away—for 70-odd years had never been inside,” says Heck. “He remembered looking at the house when he was a kid and feeling like he didn’t have access to it. He and his wife had traveled all over the world, and when they finally came in, they were in awe.”
