elcome to 2020’s first issue of I DO, one in which we are looking to the future, with clear 2020 vision, to bring you inspiration and information that will make your wedding plans extra exciting. Of course, weddings are arranged so far ahead that what nails it one year may be history by the day of your wedding. So, in this issue and throughout the year we plan to highlight attractive and practical styles and trends which we’re sure will last the distance.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Think clear, cool blues, simple, but stunning style; a wedding that points to a future that brings happiness ever after.
Classic or one-day-in-a lifetime dresses, beautiful hair and make-up, and accessories to grant any bride’s wishes, will appear on our issues. Wonderful, off-the-wall wedding locations, exceptional entertainment ideas for hens, stags and receptions, and different ways to personalise your ceremony will all feature in turn. Couple related topics are important too. Marriage brings new dimensions and demands to a relationship. Wedding ceremonies are changing, so all couples can celebrate the same life-long commitment to each other that a wedding expresses. Travel, for a destination wedding is catching on and honeymoons are taking off in different directions. We will be bringing you features on these issues and more. For now, while we still have three-quarters of the year ahead, we’re looking at the time couples spend together and how valuable every minute is. We will also be looking at when might be the best time to say ‘I Do’, the time of year, the time of day are well worth thinking about, and a lot of details should be considered before a final choice is made.
“All of my love is yours, all of my time is ours” - George Ezra, singer.
And, of course, there are our couples’ own wedding stories. It is very special to share such an important event in print; a tangible way to remember the fun and the sentiments of one of the most important days a couple will ever have. Enjoy our March issue and, please, share your ideas for what you would like to see in the rest of this year’s issues. We can be reached on email or facebook.

HINTS & HELP
THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE “WHEN WE ARE MARRIED WE’LL BE ABLE TO SPEND ALL THE TIME WE WANT TOGETHER.” IS THERE A COUPLE, ANYWHERE, WHO HASN’T SAID OR THOUGHT THIS, WHENEVER THEY HAD TO PART?
T
hen, almost all of a sudden, you are living together 24/7, probably in a different home and, or, town from the ones you are used to, and you have all the time in the world to be with each other. It feels like Heaven. But, like all the good things you thought marriage has to offer, living in such close proximity will need some important adjustments. And how you organise your time is one of them. Our time is extremely valuable. Our own personal time is precious. Being one of a couple means much of our own time may sometimes be compromised. There will be new demands on the hours once spent day-dreaming in the bathroom, shopping, meeting friends or chilling online. While you may already be used to arranging things you want to do together around your respective working hours, the time you spend on separate interests might need tweaking. Just remember that your interests, mutual and different, make you who you are – the people who clicked so completely that they couldn’t live without each other. Giving your partner the time and space to continue their interests will do more to keep your marriage solid than you could possibly imagine. It has been proved that time spent apart can actually be good for a relationship. Couples who are not in each other’s pockets have more to share, and avoid the unhealthy situation of becoming dependent on one another for everything. There’s enough out there to teach us that taking each other for granted is not a good thing. There is also the fact that a lot of your time will be spent on basics like household jobs; and this is the 21st century so forget all those ancient ideas of who does what. Obviously there will be some things
6 I DO
that one of you can do better or more easily than the other, but do keep a fair balance, or resentment will build up very quickly. Another thing that couples soon discover is that time spent together does not always have to involve doing something specific.
Ask anyone whose anniversaries can be counted over several decades and they will say that time spent really getting to know each other, sharing amusing stories, discussing important issues, and still respecting the areas where you don’t share the same feelings, is vital to your whole relationship. The ability to be in the same room, enjoying each other’s presence quietly and comfortably, without the need for interruptions, is a sign of a truly compatible couple. Making time to develop an empathy with your partner’s concerns, offering sympathy and space at the right times, and putting aside your own issues when necessary will not always be easy. It takes longer than we think to really know and understand a person, even the one we marry! But each hour invested in every year of your lives will be worth it. The future will bring more and very different demands on your time as a couple. Things will happen that you will not have anticipated and some things will be different from what you were prepared for. It is when these situations happen that every minute of the time you invest in each other will show how priceless it is.
Where Service & Quality Are Our Priority! It’s all about doing what we love... and loving what we do

COCKTAILS
GIN, GIN!
A toast to wedding traditions
Y
ou don’t have to be superstitious to enjoy keeping a few wedding traditions and one of the easiest is wearing or carrying something blue. This comes from an old English rhyme: ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. It names the four items for good-luck that a bride should have
somewhere in her outfit on her wedding day. The colour blue is the colour of love, purity and faithfulness, three key qualities for a solid marriage. It was also, apparently, a protection from wicked spirits, should any be tempted to turn up for the occasion. And, of course, it comes in so many gorgeous shades Your ‘something blue’ can be included in any number of ways from flowers and ribbons in
a bouquet, blue soles on shoes, jewellery, bridal party and groom’s accessories, the usual garter or a temporary tattoo and even seeds for blue flower as a souvenir; which makes it really fun for brides to choose their very own way to keep this special tradition. In fact, you can even toast your future with a blue drink with these delicious cocktail recipes.
ROYAL BLUE COCKTAIL ¼ cup

citron vodka or vodka
2 tbsp (1 oz)

Meet our
model
THE BRIDE, IN OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAYS A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF IDO. SO WE THINK THEY DESERVE A PAGE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT.
T
his is Madeleine Baldacchino’s second appearance as our beautiful bride. We love the way she has captured our mood of ‘simple and stunning’ so perfectly. And we also share her appreciation of quiet, country moments.
Where do you live? I live in Qrendi, a small quiet village in the south west part of the island. Still relatively untouched when compared to most localities in Malta, luckily! Where would you like to live? I haven’t decided on an actual country just yet. However, I am definitely sure that I would like to live somewhere in the countryside, with a large garden to take care of; maybe a small farm (who doesn’t want a pet alpaca?!) and in a quiet, open space where I can view sunsets and sunrises easily! City life is definitely not for me, at least for now. What is the happiest job or career you could have? Slowly, but most certainly, I will reach my goals and pursue entomology as a career. Studying insects has been my lifetime goal, they are so important to us, without us being aware. We have to take all necessary precautions and attempt to save them before it is too late. How do you like to relax? Relaxation is an essential part of my daily routine, and luckily it can come in various forms. Spending time in nature is one of the most rewarding activities one can do. Even a little, short walk in some fields is enough to calm me down! I also enjoy the occasional beer or two. Yep, definitely Irish. What could the world do without, and what does it need more of? What an easy yet difficult question. The world is currently so overpopulated with humans, that less space is now available to the rest of the millions of species of plants and animals. Destruction of habitats, fossil fuels, deforestation, cars – are all a product of humans and their selfish ways. We need to protect all species (not just pandas) because they all deserve a place on earth. How do you feel about social media, and what do you mostly use it for? I think social media is an addiction that most of us have fallen for. It is a parasitic trap that controls our thoughts and behaviour. This can have some serious negative impact on people of all ages, not just adolescents. Although there are many positive aspects of social media that I am grateful for, we must definitely limit the time spent on any social media platform.

Hair and care EVERY BRIDE WANTS HER HAIR TO BE PERFECT ON HER WEDDING DAY. IDO ASKED CHRIS MIFSUD, OUR WEDDING SHOOT HAIRSTYLIST, FOR HIS ADVICE ON CHOOSING A STYLE AND PRE-WEDDING HAIR CARE Who or what elements are influencing the look that 2020 brides will be choosing? 2020 is a big year for the wedding fashion industry with elements coming back from the 90s. This time it is yet again big bold and beautiful. How far ahead of her wedding should a bride choose her style? We all know that most women know already the style they want, although sometimes this interferes with the style of the dress, or the timing of the wedding day. We @maf hairdressing suggest that first and foremost the bride chooses the dress she likes most, then the hairstyle is chosen according to the dress. Keeping in mind when the wedding will be, this happens roughly around six to nine months prior to the wedding date. It is also important for the bride to take some pictures of her likes and dislikes to show to the hairdresser in her trials, which are done three months prior to the wedding date. It is also advisable that if a bride is wearing a veil or any ornaments like tiaras or head bands, she’ll have them with her for the trial. How important is it to match a hairstyle with a wedding outfit? Are there any easy ways to do this? It is very important that the hairdresser and bride know each other for sometime in, so he or she knows the bride’s likes and dislikes. Matching the hairstyle to the dress is a must. But one must also keep in mind the following points; face shape and body shape, hair type, if it is a morning or evening wedding and also the height of the groom. Pre wedding months can be quite stressful. How can a bride take special care of her hair in order to ensure it is in the best condition on the day, whatever time of year her wedding is held? And what type of products would you recommend a bride uses in the months before her wedding? Well, with today’s ‘everybody’s busy schedule’, one must still take good care of their hair, not just for the wedding day but for the everyday life. It is very important that we use an appropriate shampoo and
conditioner, at least from a year before, and also change them from time to time ( ie for dry damaged hair in summer/ nourishing in winter/ deep cleansing in spring and autumn). Use a mask once a week or more, especially if the bride stresses her hair with chemical procedures like colouring and highlighting. Also if a bride uses heating elements like blowers straightener curling thongs etc. it is advised that she has deep therapy treatments for such things at least once or twice a month. If a bride is using hair colouring or highlights, how close to her wedding date should she book these? If a bride is going for a different look for the wedding date we suggest that she starts shifting her hair colour as from six to nine months before. You’ll say that’s a long time, but it’s better done slowly but surely, rather than rushing things then ending up in a mess. If we’re planning on staying with the same hair colours we suggest that the hair colour is done fresh in the last week before the wedding, thus ensuring that there won’t be any regrowth. Are there any styles you would advise a bride to avoid on her big day, and what reasons would you give? This is very simple… Don’t try to overdo it and completely go out of your way just because you saw something on the Internet or in a bridal mag or to be better than your best friend.
JUST BE YOURSELF WITH A BIT OF EXTRA OOMPH! If you own a short hairstyle. Don’t grow your hair for the wedding day, you might not feel like you’re yourself on the day. Aim at being yourself and don’t let anyone else change you. One last point, don’t go for let down hair, especially in the hot summer months, as hair won’t look good for very long, especially with the humidity in Malta. Join our Facebook page MAF Hairdressing or Instagram @mafhairdressing for more tips and ideas.

How to be a blooming bride EVERY BRIDE WANTS TO BE A PICTURE OF HEALTH ON HER WEDDING DAY BUT THAT MIGHT TAKE SOME TWEAKING IN THE FOOD, DRINK AND LIFESTYLE DEPARTMENTS
O
bviously, drastic diets and crippling exercise plans are not advised. So it’s a good idea to begin any self improving habits well ahead of the wedding date, for the best results; and to allow for any lapses. To make it easier do an honest and realistic appraisal of what you want to achieve. Base this on sensible ways to make yourself look and feel your best, not just for your wedding day but for the rest of your life. And remember, your fiancé chose you. Don’t try and turn yourself into one of the photo-shopped images that fill social media. And as for crank diets – never! Food is our fuel, too much, or too little, of the wrong stuff and the body stops working as it should. Give it what it needs, in sensible amounts, and the results will be worth it. Only you know exactly when you get most hungry, so plan meals and snacks to suit your appetite and lifestyle, otherwise all the ‘perfect diets’ in the world are not going to help. Ultimately you have to create the eating plan that suits you. This takes patience, imagination,
discipline and the ability to be kind to yourself. There is still a lot of truth in the saying: “A little of what you fancy does you good.” But even healthy eating will not keep weight away from specific areas of the body. Exercise is also needed to complete the makeover. Have a think about what you want exercise to do for you and decide on something that helps you achieve those goals. But choose something you really enjoy, because you must stick with it to get the best results. You may even discover a new sport and decide it’s worth buying all the kit, gear and accessories that go with it. But it’s not just about what we eat and how energetic we are. What we drink plays a huge part in our state of health too. The average adult woman‘s body comprises 55% water, for men it’s 60%. Just imagine the damage we’re unconsciously doing to ourselves by not drinking enough pure water. The body depends on the water we drink to eliminate toxins and waste. This, of course, affects our inner health and the outward appearance of our skin, hair and nails. Think of the wedding photo close-ups. Overall health also depends on sleep, or more precisely the quality of our sleep. Poor sleep is responsible for hormone imbalances leading to changes in appetite, lack of
concentration and less ability to carry out everyday tasks. All the plans and excitement of a wedding are enough to keep anyone awake at night.
TAKE WHATEVER MEANS YOU NEED TO RELAX AND GET TO SLEEP. THIS WILL BE ESPECIALLY USEFUL IN THE NIGHTS LEADING UP TO THE BIG DAY. Finally, among all your efforts include a little pampering in your look good, feel good projects. You’ll have earned a few treats such as massages, a sauna and preparations for the big day like, facials, manicures, pedicures and specialist hair and skin care therapies. And, best of all, on your wedding day you know you will look and feel truly radiant.
I DO 25
Let your wedding bouquet send a message FLOWERS HAVE MEANINGS SO YOU MAY WANT TO BE SURE YOUR BOUQUET SAYS THE RIGHT THING.
T
here are age-old traditional choices for wedding flowers, or you can pick a totally original bunch, based on your wedding theme, colour scheme or long-time romantic dream. But if you are even a tiny bit superstitious you will want flowers that not only give a heavenly scent but also say the right thing. And here we should say that some flowers are only unlucky in certain colours. Here, then, is a brief, light-hearted translation of the language of some of the blooms brides are most likely to choose. Larkspur, pretty as it is, means infidelity – not a good way to start. And if you were going to include a few sprays of lavender, for its beautiful scent, you should know it signifies mistrust. Simple sweet peas, which are associated with the words ‘blissful pleasure’, ‘thank you‘ and ‘goodbye‘, are apparently a very good omen for brides in France, whatever that may mean. Lilies are a classic favourite and you are fine with all white, cream etc – think purity and sweetness. Just don’t add any yellow ones or you’ll be inviting insincerity and falsehood. In fact, pretty as the colour is for spring and summer wedding, yellow is tricky for bouquets in general. Yellow roses equal jealousy. Carnations show disdain. Tulips represent hopeless love, while chrysanthemums say slighted love and also indicate a secret admirer; which makes them risky for the bride, but exciting for a bridesmaid. Other yellow flowers are no problem. For winter weddings, warm reds, mulberry colours and seasonal greenery and blooms are an obvious choice. And yet, the Christmas rose is out. It suggests scandal! Luckily, red roses equal passionate love and faithfulness and red tulips indicate true love. And the holly and the ivy,
26 I DO
joined as they are in the Christmas carol, make a perfect team. Holly flowers say defence and domestic happiness, and the ivy is known for fidelity, married love and affection. Perfect! The up-coming 20’s trend will be for larger bouquets including a variety of flowers, an ideal way to symbolise all you hope for in the future. There are irises for wisdom and hope. Daffodils or narcissus stand for respect, good fortune and chivalry. Jasmine gives amiability and white heather gives protection and brings wishes that come true. Add texture and contrast with twigs, buds, the greenery of ivy, see above, and rosemary, for remembrance. Really colourful bouquets are also predicted for 2020 and that means poppies signifying imagination; freesias meaning trust; orchids depicting love and beauty; or peonies, which are linked to happiness and prosperity, can all burst out in one big beautiful bunch. A lot rides on the bride’s bouquet. It is a real attention grabber. And the best bouquet is the one you choose because you love the flowers and whatever they mean to you personally. A piece of quaint, old hearsay is no reason to cancel any glorious arrangements you may have been planning. Quite honestly, golden wedding anniversaries have been celebrated by brides who walked down the aisle carrying a stunning bouquet of blooms forecasting disaster. Well, love conquers everything. A WORD ABOUT ORANGE BLOSSOM The scent of orange blossom is bright, airy, and ethereal. It relieves stress and anxiety and has been a favourite of brides everywhere for centuries. In ancient China orange blossoms were incorporated in the bride’s costume as a symbol of purity, chastity and innocence. And, as one of the rare plants which bears blooms and fruit simultaneously, the orange also denotes fruitfulness. The custom travelled west to Spain and France, and to England in the early 1800s. Enchanting legends were spun, inspired by maidens entwining fresh orange blossoms into wreaths for their hair. And the phrase “to gather orange blossoms” took the meaning of ‘to seek a wife’.
WHEN TO WED
DECIDING TO MARRY IS EASY; WORKING OUT THE DATE TAKES A LOT OF THOUGHT.
W
hatever dreams you have for your perfect wedding the date and time are not always that simple to decide. A number of things need to be considered to get the timing exactly right. You will probably be better off deciding at least the year and month before you announce your engagement, since the obvious response is bound to be, ‘Congratulations and when is the big day?’ so have your year and month in mind, very early on. Here are some ways to make your choice easier. Tempting as it might be to coincide your wedding with a special anniversary, or event, in your lives this may not be such a good idea. One is sure to upstage the other in years to come and your wedding day should be extra special in its own right. TIME AND DAY First have a clear picture of your ideal wedding theme, setting, location and décor, outfits, flowers, catering etc. If you are already dreaming of a glowing summer open air wedding or a winter-white fantasy, you will already know the time of year to choose. The day and date depends on just about everything you can imagine. It will need to suit your working life, your friends and relatives who may have to take time off, arrange child minders and pet carers and, perhaps, travel to the wedding from some way away. It will have to fit around public holidays, school holidays, conventions, festas, national anniversaries and events, even, possibly, the overnight hour change from winter to summer time and vice versa. And remember, unless your plans are so original and different that they would never occur to another couple, there will be huge competition for venues, churches, caterers, florists and entertainment, during the most popular dates and months. In certain cultures there are specific times when weddings are not usually held. In others, couples consult astrological calendars to pick a day. If you are planning a destination wedding abroad, be sure to check, as thoroughly as possible, that there will be no likelihood of you being caught up in elections, riots, nationwide strikes or extreme
weather situations. And, if you’re really practical you will both be considering how your new married status will influence your tax bills and deciding on a time of year which offers the best financial returns. MONEY MATTERS The season and day of the week you choose for your wedding will affect the costs considerably. Obviously peak seasons and times mean peak prices. But things are evening out here too. The attraction of winter weddings, with the elegance of flowing white bridal capes, and flaming log fires in the stunning, welcoming indoor venues has become quite a thing. Who wouldn’t welcome a wedding celebration to cheer up a dull winter day, with beautiful, seasonal fresh flowers and a groom and male wedding guests who don’t have to melt in the heat? Not to mention wedding decorations merging with Christmas displays, romantic candle and lamp lighting and tasty, warming dishes for guests to enjoy. If you book far enough ahead to take advantage of the days between long weekends
and public holidays you may be able to set a usually unpopular midweek day for your celebrations; with a valuable reduction in costs. If you are not booking a complete package wedding, choosing a less- favoured month or day can also mean it is more likely that all the services you need will be available at once. Nothing is more disappointing than having to make compromises because not all your dream plans can be synchronised. THE FINAL DECISION Before you finally name the day, you should certainly consider any reasons why it might be difficult for some people to attend and check with family and VIP guests. Sending a save the date notice well enough in advance should flag up any concerns. But don’t worry the people who really matter wouldn’t want to miss your big day for the world. It’s also not a bad idea to think about how you would like to celebrate your anniversaries. Then, whatever date you choose will not only be perfect for your wedding but for all the years to come.

MAKING AN IMPRESSIVE ENTRANCE IS EVERY BRIDE’S PREROGATIVE, SO CHOOSE A SPECIAL WAY TO ARRIVE AT YOUR WEDDING.
I
f your ceremony is being held near enough to your home you could revive the old tradition of walking to the service in a charming procession, under an ornate canopy, serenaded by singers and musicians in costume, through streets filled with happy guests. Today, more often than not, a bride and her attendants need some form of transport to reach their venue; and it would be fun to find a way to arrive at, and leave your wedding location in a way that no one will forget. Will you turn up in a luxury stretch limo, a wonderful vintage car, garnished with wide ribbons; a 1950s Cadillac clone, the horn blaring Here Comes the Bride, or a fairytale carriage, drawn by white horses wearing plumes of ostrich feathers? And what about a karozzin, its canopy adorned with flowers for a simple, traditional touch. If the wedding is being held near the sea, why not drift up to the quay in a suitably decorated luzzu, in the style of a Venetian gondola? Motorbikes with sidecars, a topical Tuk tuk and a quad bike are all possibilities, depending on your sense of adventure, so let your imagination fly away with you. If you’re feeling
Photo: Dalton’s Chauffeur Services really ambitious, or extravagant, consider a helicopter, at least for your going away exit. If your work or special interests involve transport you may want to incorporate this in some way. But do consider your guests’ panic levels before you arrive in an ambulance, off duty police car, or civil defence vehicle. And don’t be surprised if fellow transport enthusiasts feel like seeing you off in convoy. An escort of bicycles, motor bikes or offroaders will clear your way to your next destination with ease and give everyone something to remember.
There are so many choices to suit any wedding theme or location. But however you decide to arrive for your wedding make sure that: ◊ You can get in and out of, or on and off, the vehicle easily. ◊ Your dress, hair and make-up will stand the test of a topless vehicle.
◊ The person accompanying you is OK with your choice if you are going for something very gimmicky. ◊ And, very important, that you book all your transport well in advance.

THE COUPLE
Stephanie & William 21 June 2019 Stephanie Tonna, 33, a staff nurse, and William Grech, 38, a senior staff nurse, were married at Ta’ Loretu Chapel, Gudja
POPPING THE QUESTION illiam and Stephanie clicked immediately, and were already living together when William made a surprise proposal. He booked two special nights in a Valletta boutique hotel, and as soon as they checked into their room, he told Stephanie this was a special occasion and, on bended knee, he said, “I love you and want to spend my life with you. Do you want to marry me?” An emotional Stephanie put on the ring and started kissing and hugging William. But minutes passed without her answer, so he asked, “Do you want to marry me or not?” and received the reply “Of course I want to!” “It was special for us indeed. Within a month we booked and settled everything”, William concluded. Charlene, of Foilplus Invitations, was very helpful in creating the special, unique invitations, the couple wanted, which represented caricature statues that also appeared as their cake topper. »

AN EVENTFUL CEREMONY » On the same date as their first date, June 21, the couple married in the chapel of Ta’ Loretu, limits of Gudja, a cosy chapel that took William back to his childhood when he used to play and pray there with tal-Muzew. “We love simple and traditional things, so the chapel was decorated with only white flowers”, the couple said. Stephanie arrived, in style, in a car from Newwes Garage. But before the couple could exchange their vows, Stephanie, having only eaten a fist-size portion of pasta and stopped drinking at midday, because it was difficult to use the toilet with her dress, fainted! She was carried out of the chapel for some fresh air, and rehydration tablets which worked immediately. Within a couple of minutes the ceremony continued.“It was not funny”, William remembers. “But now, as time has passed, we mention it with a smile.” Stephanie wore a simple dress, in a style she loves, and finally found at Ivory and Co. It was ivory in colour, mermaid style, with the top embroidered front and back and a classic, plain skirt. Her fourmetre veil was held in place by a band of pearls in the shape of flowers, and she carried a simple bouquet of white/ivory roses and mixed flowers, by floral designer David Grech. A special touch was a set of rose gold jewels which were a gift from William. »

» William opted for a navy blue suit, from Bortex, with an ivory, damask waist coat and wide ivory tie. He also carried one for his team by putting two special emblems of Liverpool FC on the soles of his shoes! The couple exchanged white and rose gold rings, engraved with their names and dates. FOR A FAIRY TALE RECEPTION Stephanie and William were thrilled to discover Xara Lodge, which they had decorated in pastel colours, fairy lights and illuminated signs and flowers, by The Organizer Clayton, and Charlo, who also provided the red carpet in the church. They added a personalised guest book and a table with more flowers at the entrance as a tribute to William’s father. “On entering the venue we both stopped at this table and by way of respect we lit a candle there”, said William. Catering was by Xara Catering, who also made the beautifully presented three-tiered cake.
Keeping up with local traditions, the couple chose Fejn Tmur il-Qalb, by Mike Spiteri for their first dance, which was complimented by an amazing fireworks display, by BG Malta Fireworks Display – Bernard Cauchi. They wanted a DJ instead of a band, they think the atmosphere created by a DJ is lovely. They also had a saxophonist and a trumpeter who created a great vibe. “We and our guests had a blast dancing and having a good time!”, the couple recalled. Stephanie’s brother offered to play at the after party and he chose the ideal playlist for everyone! “We had some flip-flops for the ladies, which turned out to be a good idea”, they added. They included a whiskey bar, hired through their wedding organizer, Clayton Zahra, who they described as excellent. And they included a candy cart, which was as popular with adults as with the small kids, and a mirror booth which gave them a whole album full of pictures taken by their guests. »
“Our special day passed but it’s all marked with memories! We would like to thank all those who took part in our amazing wedding!” – William & Stephanie.
» Instead of souvenirs Stephanie and William made a donation to Hospice Malta, in appreciation of their care of his father, and guests received bookmarks as tokens of this gesture. “This was appreciated a lot by our guests”, the couple noted. They gave their parents a silver frame each, with a photo taken before their wedding, and also gave presents to their bridesmaids and two best men as thanks for all their help with their wedding. A honeymoon in the hotel Kempinski, in San Lawrenz followed. “We could not have asked for a better option”, the couple agreed.

TEENAGERS IN LOVE yrone and Tifany have been together since they were just teenagers. Three months after they met, Tifany discovered she was pregnant. As young teenage parents life was hard. Nine years later they both decided it was time to tie the knot. “After all that we had been through together we felt that we really both deserved to really become one. There was no actual proposal, but we just decided that we really wanted this for our relationship. And it was really the best decision we ever made”, explained Tifany. “Tyrone and I planned the whole wedding from beginning to end together. But we did need help from The Wedding Organisers, by Jurgen Briffa”, said Tifany, who described him as being trustworthy, very organised and a huge helping hand. “Thanks to him the wedding was simply perfect”, she added. The couple sent out invitations designed by My Paper Décor by The Gift Box, in St Venera. “They gave us just as we wanted”, they confirmed. And they decided to make a donation to Puttinu Cares instead of giving souvenirs.
T
A CHAPEL SETTING FOR A PERFECT CEREMONY They chose the small chapel of Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Mosta, for their wedding service, because Tyrone was raised in the same location and they both really liked it. Tifany wore the dress of her dreams. “Ever since I was a little girl I used to always tell myself that if I marry I will have this big ball gown. I always imagined myself in a huge ball gown. Thanks to WeddingBells, in Valletta. I found my dream dress. Luckily, enough my daughter, Teziene, got to wear a dress just like mine, thanks to The Little Princess Salon, in San Gwann”, she said. »

» Instead of jewellery she wore the veil she had always imagined, attached to large tiara, hand made by Kersten Borg, and she added crystal stud earrings, borrowed from her mother. Tifany’s make-up was by Karl Zammit Nash, and J’Adore Beauty Salon, by Jessica, was responsible for the bridesmaids’ makeup. She carried a bouquet of white and pink flowers, also with crystal studs, by Pisani Florist. Teziene had an identical, but slightly smaller bouquet. Tyrone, his grooms men and the couple’s fathers hired their suits from Natasha’s His and Hers in Attard, and wore floral button holes, also by Pisani Florist. The couple exchanged rings with Teziene carrying out the important task of ring bearer, in the company of her cousins, who were attendants. The family’s Yorkshire terrier, Toby, was also part of the wedding by waiting to surprise them when they came out of the church. The couple held their reception in Olive Gardens, Rabat. The first time they saw outdoor area and view, they knew it would be place for them. “C. Camilleri and Sons, the caterers for the Olive Gardens, did everything as planned and everyone loved the food. We had a four tier cake which was made exactly as we wanted”, she continued. »

» For their first dance Tifany and Tyrone chose Somebody Like You, by Ivan Grech. their favourite part was when their daughter joined in; a beautiful moment when you feel that all you ever wanted is finally true. Tifany then danced with her bridal team, and with her older brother. Both turn out to be amazing and fun, she remembered.
“This day was a day that we will truly remember for the rest of our lives; a day full of emotions and excitement.” – Tifany and Tyrone.

Marcella & Michael 4 August 2019 Marcella Tabone, 24, a kindergarten educator, and Michael John Cordina, 30, a dentist, were married in Gozo Cathedral. A SURPRISE PROPOSAL Marcella and Michael started dating on Christmas Eve after knowing each other just a few months. Eight years later they wanted to take their relationship to the next level. “We started as friends but we knew that there was something special between us. Âť

» In May 2016, Michael took me to the Citadel, where we first met, and surprised me with a proposal. The proposal was very special for both of us as it took place right where our love story started”, said Marcella. When choosing wedding invitations, they decided to include the Citadel in the design since it held such a special place in their hearts. “First we got an aerial shot of the Citadel, courtesy of Michael’s brother Joseph. This was painted by the artist Manwel Grech and then Joseph Bonnici, at JDB Digital Printing, created the design for the invitations”, they explained. The invitations were even written in Maltese, and proof read by Marcella’s maid of honour, Marise Grech. VINTAGE STY LE Marcella and Michael chose a vintage style theme for their wedding. It was held a few days before the feast of Santa Marija, which has a special place in their hearts, and is celebrated in the same church. For their special ceremony Marcella wore a dress she had chosen two years before – Viero Bridal from Chicago’s 2019 collection, from Eva Mariee Bridal Exclusive. “It was the first bridal shop I visited and the first dress that I tried on. And when I wore it I knew that it was the dress that I had always dreamt of since I was a little girl”, she said. The dress was in three layers. The top was covered in 3-D flowers, each with a pearl attached. The second was a glittery fabric and the third was satin. It was very comfortable and easy to walk in. Marcella also became friends with the designer of Viero Bridal, who made her a veil to match the dress exactly. It was a plain four-metre cathedral veil with the same 3-D flowers attached. She also wore a bracelet borrowed from her mother and earrings which were a Christmas present from her now husband. Her beautiful bouquet, by Jason Curmi, included orange roses. Michael decided to wear his favourite colour, blue, and hired his outfit and those of his grooms men from Cefai Formal Wear. The couple chose white gold wedding rings, from Stephen Vassallo Jewellers. AN ELEGANT SETTING FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS The couple had a large wedding party to include as many family members and friends as possible. »

» They chose Ta’ Frenc Restaurant for their reception for its mouth-watering and very well presented food, and outstanding views of Marsalforn Valley. Beautiful decorations were provided by Finishing Touches by Josiana, including glass vases, flowers, tree decorations and ornaments. There were white lanterns with love quote boards, as they requested, and a touch of yellow was included to go nicely with the touches of blue. Their guests enjoyed canapés, a starter, main course and desserts. The three-tiered wedding cake, also by Ta’ Frenc, was the traditional almond cake decorated with air brushed fondant and a cake topper created by the groom’s brother. For their first dance, Marcella and Michael chose the song Perfect, by Ed Sheeran. “When we first heard this song, we immediately fell in love with it and decided to use it for our first dance there and then”, they explained. They also set a playlist for the band who surprised them, and their guests, by making them sing their second favourite song, Xemx, by the Tramps. Little extra touches made this wedding special. To link their traditional vintage theme and beautiful Gozo location, they settled on jams made from typical Maltese fruits, figs and prickly pears, in old style glass jars, by It-Tokk Gozo Traditional Food as souvenirs. »
» Marcella mentions the joy she felt when her colleague surprised her by bringing her Kinder 1 students to the wedding ceremony; and making sure that her beloved cat was included in the photo shoot, while everyone was getting ready for the special day. “We had a lot of help from our family members as well as our wedding planner Carmelino Refalo, who guided us through the whole wedding journey”, they said. “For me the ceremony meant that I had officially started an exciting, new and lifelong journey with my best friend and soul mate”, Michael added.

THE COUPLE
Jessica & Carl 24 May 2019 Jessica Calleja, 26, a medical lab scientist at Mater Dei, and Carl Vella, a nurse at Mater Dei, were married in Ibragg Parish Church. A NIGHT TO REMEMBER Carl and Jessica met when they were still in school. As the years went by they talked about getting married, wanting to be in each other‘s lives and wanting to start a family too. “Carl proposed to me on our sixth year together and it was a complete surprise. We had planned to meet up with two friends at a karaoke restaurant. As the night wore on, Carl signed up for karaoke. When his turn came he started singing Everything, by Michael Bublé. At the end of the song he went down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was such a surprise that I was lost for words and literally went up to him, took the ring and put it on. It was truly a night to remember and I will always treasure it”, said Jessica. The couple searched for modern, elegant unique invitations and chose a tri-fold style, in white with navy blue accents to match the groom’s colours. MODERN ELEGANCE WITH A TOUCH OF SPARKLE Jessica walked up an aisle, laid with a red carpet by Andre from The Carpet Man. She wore a Randy Fenoli creation, from Ivory and Co. It was a lovely fit and flare ivory dress, covered with embroidered flowers and transparent sequins scattered throughout. It had a sweetheart neckline and a veil, by Pronovias, in a very similar design to that of the dress; so it was perfect. Her head piece, also from Ivory and Co, complemented the look. Jessica chose high-heeled ivory, satin finished peep- toe shoes in a simple design so she could wear them again if she wanted to. They were amazingly comfortable and she wore them the entire night, including for dancing. »
» For jewellery she added Swarovski chandelier ear rings, a Christmas present from Carl, to wear on their special day; a simple Swarovski pendant, which was a gift from her loving parents, and a diamond and sapphire bracelet of her mother’s. And her bouquet was all white roses. Carl wanted to stand out – modern, elegant and sophisticated. After searching for the perfect outfit he found what he was looking for at Cefai’s Formal Wear, Mosta. It was a midnight blue tuxedo, with a self designed jacket. His shirt had black stud buttons and he added chocolate brown formal leather shoes from Aldo, Bortex gold cufflinks and a silver and gold Michael Kors watch. “It turned out to be a show-stopper!” He remembered proudly. Jessica and Carl each had rings from Vascas. They comprised two gold and one white gold rings joined together. Jessica’s
ring had five small diamonds but they kept Carl’s ring plain. “On the inside we had engraved our wedding date, initials and the word ‘always’ written on mine, and ‘forever’ written on Carl’s”, said Jessica. PERFECT PERSONAL TOUCHES “We wanted something different that resembles us as a couple”, Jessica and Carl explained. So, for their reception they chose the Westin Dragonara Hotel’s Reef pool deck as it was spacious and they could use the pool area, overlooking the sea. Arnold Sammut from Audio System installed up lighters around the columns and palm trees, a fairy light curtain at the back of the pool that reflected beautifully and also a fountain in the pool. Pisani Florist decorated the guest book table and also provided flower arrangements on the bistro tables and the large tables. »
“We will always cherish the emotions that we felt when we were at the altar exchanging our vows and looking into each other's eyes knowing, finally, after months of preparations, that our day had finally arrived.” – Jessica & Carl
» The hotel catering provided excellent food, and the three-tiered wedding cake which had red velvet with cream cheese at the base, chocolate cake with chocolate ganache, in the middle and vanilla sponge and lemon cream on top. The outside was covered with ivory icing and white piping and trimmed with sugar paste flowers and swags. During the reception Cuban cigars for the gentlemen and red roses for the women were handed out. The couple had an ice sculpture of two swans, created by Paul Kind, and for souvenirs they chose glass swans with their necks forming a heart with another frosted heart in the middle, by Kudos. They also had a photo booth and a spectacular firework display, by BG Malta Fireworks Display– Bernard Cauchi. Lessons and professional choreography, using waltz steps and lifts, at Steps Ahead Dance Studio, meant the couple’s first dance, to Westlife’s Beautiful in White,
really told a story. And DJ Alison from Pro Dj Hire, provided a mix of modern and classic songs throughout the night, while amazing cocktails flowed. The couple credit Robert Vella Barnes, Wedding Specialist, and Pierre Scicluna, Banqueting Manager, at the Westin Dragonara who saw that everything was set up correctly and were a huge help in the months leading up to the wedding and The Wedding Organisers, by Jurgen Briffa, whose attention to detail and meticulous planning meant they could enjoy their wedding to the fullest, having time to mingle with our guests and enjoying the delicious food and amazing cocktails by Mr Cocktail Van. “We had the greatest financial support from Jessica’s parents, as they paid for our wedding, which we both are eternally grateful for. Carl’s parents also gave us a generous gift on our big day and we are both grateful for it”, they added.
