AIRPORT romance After getting engaged in flight on Valentine’s Day, Captain Charles Borg Giuliano and his cabin crew fiancée Julia Lynne Saliba approached Malta International Airport’s team to host their wedding civil ceremony at the Malta International Airport. MIA Marketing and Brand Development Manager KRISTINA VASSALLO told I Do how her team rose to the occasion to surprise the bride and groom.
T
he newlywed pilot-stewardess couple flew on heart shaped paths in the sky before enjoying a surprise wedding reception at Malta International Airport. The couple walked into the ceremony handin-hand dressed to the nines in their uniforms. The wedding organising team got local band Red Electrick to play their favourite song ‘Young Again’ while they walked up the aisle, after they found out this was their favourite song. The couple
exchanged their vows, during a sunset ceremony held on the airport’s observation deck. The ceremony was held beneath a draped marquee set up on a terrace decorated with white candle and fairy lights, overlooking the airport’s apron. Captain Borg Giuliano and his new wife then jetted off with friends and family onto a chartered Air Malta flight around the Mediterranean. The flight, named KM14JC, caught the attention of aviation enthusiasts after its fly path formed two giant hearts on
the air traffic tracking site flightradar24.com. On arrival, the newlyweds were treated to a wedding reception at the Malta International Airport, which provided a romantic sunset setting on a terrace filled with flowers, candles and lots of champagne to mark the special occasion. “It’s not a common occurrence that a pilot and cabin crew member tie the knot, so we wanted to go all out and give them a day to remember. We dressed up the terrace and gave them a unique airport experience, different from what they are used to.

“We also treated the couple to celebrity-style VIP treatment courtesy of Malta International Airport’s La Valette Club. Amidst plenty of confetti on the couple’s arrival, our chauffered La Valette Club car collected them from outside the terminal and drove them to our new and exclusive VIP Terminal. The cake cutting ceremony was truly a dream and the sound of planes taking off and landing just made the experience that much more authentic. They danced their first dance as newly-weds, to the tunes of ‘Take my breath Away’ from the move Top gun.” “Organising an airport wedding is no easy feat. Apart from the arrangements required from an operational point of view, we wanted to put together something simple and elegant which showed off the location, whilst transforming it into a white aviation paradise for the happy couple. “Some unique touches were added to mark the occasion. ‘Just Married’ with the flight number KM14JC displayed all over our flight information screens and spoiling the couple with a priveleged VIP Terminal experience before they boarded the aircraft.” “All our departments worked together with wedding specialists to style the terrace into a truly beautiful venue for the sophisticated ceremony and reception. Seeing the couple’s surprised faces as they walked towards the ceremony and to their surprise reception made the whole experience all worthwhile!”

ith longer days and flowers in full bloom May offers a spectacular time for weddings making it one of the most popular wedding months. After six years together, Claire Agius and Josef Tonna picked 1st May for their morning wedding last year. Claire and Josef met each other at a local night club. After coincidentally meeting each other a few times they started feeling comfortable and realised that their characters were compatible. One night they exchanged numbers and decided to meet for
the feast of St Joseph at their hometown. It was then that they made plans for their first date. With their love for each other growing closer, they pursued the common dream to tie the knot. Before the big day Claire’s closest friends organized a weekend in Madrid. She also had a hen’s night organised for her relatives a few weeks before the wedding. Josef’s friends too organised a short break abroad before he got hitched. They spent a bachelor’s weekend in Poland and then continued their celebrations with a stag do in a local farmhouse. Both the bride and groom are from Rabat so choosing a church and a venue close to
home was inevitable. The church dedicated to St Mary of Jesus was chosen for the wedding mass. One of the bride’s greatest friends Jeannelle Newell together with Jonathan took care of the ceremony music. Moreover, the bride’s youngest cousin Paula Ciantar who is 11 years old played a violin piece during the exchange of the vows. Fr Joseph Ciappara celebrated the mass. The reception was held at The Xara Lodge by Infinitely Xara. The venue was the first one they visited and since it offers both a outdoor setting and an indoor area overlooking the stunning gardens, The Xara Lodge was a natural choice for the couple.

It took them around two years to iron out all the details involved, as they wanted to make sure they had ample time to decide on how to spend their happiest days of their lives. Claire and Josef just wanted their wedding to be simple and classy. The bride’s slim-fitting fishtail dress was bought from Alamango’s while the groom’s suit was bought from Milan. They picked an elegant colour palette with hues of ivories and golden beiges for the bridal party’s dresses. A few lilac flowers were added to the bouquets for a pop of colour. The page boy’s little navy blue suit complemented the groom’s suit. All the male wedding party’s clothing was hired from Reno’s Tailoring & Hiring Services.

The couple’s priority was that their guests enjoy the day as much as they did. The band, Red Electrick, was placed towards the centre of the garden to make sure there was enough space for their 500 guests to let their hair down. They picked the song ‘She’s the one’ by Robbie Williams for their first dance. They had decided to go to New Zealand for their honeymoon months before they set their wedding date. Two days after the wedding they flew to Singapore and then they took a connection flight to Australia. After visiting Sydney and the Gold Coast, New Zealand was their final destination where they spent 18 days travelling by car from Auckland in the North to Christchurch in the South. They spent two days in Dubai before they returned home. Josef took care of planning all the arrangements.

NEW HOME vs RESALE HOME?
These days, as the difference in cost between new and old homes becomes narrower, this question is more pertinent and although this seems a fairly straightforward question, coming up with the right answer can be surprisingly challenging. Most first time buyers naturally focus on the purchase price and location of the property but the home’s condition should also be an important consideration. The Maltese real estate market offers a variety of new constructions, pre-war or post-war era buildings and each type of home, whether it’s an apartment or a single dwelling deserves due consideration. ARCHITECT KEITH SCHEMBRI shares some food for thought with potential home buyers on the topic.
B
uyers’ tastes and architecture have changed along the years to embrace the transience in today’s culture and life in an age that promotes change. To this effect, generally, newer homes have fewer but larger rooms including spacious kitchens and family gathering open plan areas, while older properties incline towards numerous but smaller rooms accompanied by larger gardens. The tenant's personal preferences and lifestyle will dictate which type of home and layout is most appealing keeping in mind certain amenities such as a garage which might be a rare find with older properties. New homes typically require less maintenance during the first decade and if high energy bills are a buyer's concern, energy efficiency is one important aspect to consider when scouting a property. New homes usually are well insulated and include double-glazing apertures as a standard, making them cheaper to run than older homes hence have a better Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which is similar to a household electrical appliance energy label and uses scale bars showing the energy rating of the building and its carbon emissions.
Nonetheless, old property renovations under the professional guidance of an architect can bring the property up to modern standard and enjoy a high energy efficiency rating as well. Older homes have stood for decades, some even for centuries, and one of the beautiful characteristics of old homes is the amount of meticulous labour that went into them. Indeed several old homes are still beautiful to-date precisely because of the craftsmanship and their features. Old-style appeal, when further enhanced by regular maintenance, can really give a house a certain charm that's noticeable; there's something special about owning a classically beautiful house. A balance between preservation and renovation should be sought in order to enhance architectural features of old buildings while offering the comfort of modern living. This marriage between old and new and the contrasting elements between minimalistic straight lines against old features can bring a property to life again. In most cases, unconverted buildings need inspection by an authorised professional and if there's something that needs to be replaced in the structure, wirings, plumbing, and the likes, it may be more
costly since the system could be different from newer ones so it might need total replacement. Though buyers need to factor the renovation costs in the budget, the works can be planned over a timeframe which suits the buyers and professionally renovated homes will eventually require less maintenance along the years. Older buildings may have undergone multiple renovations to modify the internal layout and exterior aesthetics to the owner’s taste at the time that do not necessary meet today's building codes. An architect can help to identifying such issues, get any necessary permits from the local authorities and guide the buyer on any ongoing state offered grants to assist owners in the construction and/or completion of their home. Whether looking for a new property or a resale place both can be turned into a loving nest to the buyer's liking. In the next article we will provide you with ample tips on renovation projects. adine and Kevin have known each other since they were 20 years old when they were introduced to each other through common friends. Keeping their distance at first, they met at a bar one day and had a proper one-to-one conversation over some drinks. They flirted with each other, dated and kept strong during a 9month long distance relationship now only to describe it all as “one crazy ride!” Nadine had been asking Kevin to propose for weeks, telling him that if he did not propose she would do it herself (although she would never have really done it). His reply used to be that if she proposed he would decline! So she kept waiting for him to do it, but in the meantime secretly booked St George’s Basilica, as she would not have had it any other way. This was the church where she had been baptised, had her Holy Communion and her confirmation. She had dreamt about walking down the aisle in that same church since she was a young girl. One day in April, he took her to Dwejra to see the sunset but the weather turned out to be so cloudy that there didn’t seem to be a sunset at all! They had a laugh about the weather and as soon as she said ‘Yes’, she told him she had booked the church for the 2nd August. It took him by surprise and although they had the option to change the date, decided to stick to it. Preparations began for a fun and relaxed wedding and Nadine wanted everyone to dance the night away. The colour scheme was a warm coral and was followed through in bridesmaids’ dresses and decor. Country Terrace was their venue of choice especially for the view of the Gozo Channel which provided a magical feeling and was perfect for what they had in mind. They had a standing reception which is not the norm for a Gozitan wedding. White lanterns were used to dress up the venue. Guests left their messages on wooden hearts which were dropped into a frame and is now hanging in their new home.

Around 380 people were invited and the vows were exchanged in English since a lot of foreign friends were among the guests. While they had set a budget, Nadine found it hard to stick to it towards the end as she preferred getting things done and having details in place over being financially efficient. As for wedding invitations, the bride opted for DIY and spent weeks working on them together with her sister and Kevin. He had reservations about this idea and although she hates to admit it, feels he had been right as the job was tiring and time consuming. The end product was however to their satisfaction. They had two different types of souvenirs representing their personalities. A fridge magnet reading ‘L’O’V’E’ Enter’ on a keyboard design represented Kevin while she had a jar filled with candy which proved to be the most popular among guests. Their wedding bands were simple with their initials and wedding date engraved on the inside. Nadine’s also has small dainty diamonds encrusted within.
36 I DO
The best part of the wedding was the dancing even though they had argued about what music to play while planning their big night. Nadine loved their first dance and she had never seen Kevin dance so much. She also planned a surprise dance with her father which was absolutely hilarious and the guests loved it. “We had so much fun,” Nadine says. “It was a great feeling to see everything falling into place!” Nadine wore a ball gown and felt like a Disney princess on the day. While her bridal party enjoyed seeing her in different dresses at the first shop they visited, she was not wowed by any of them. Upon describing her vision to the sales assistant at Ivory and Co she was presented with what she had in mind. Her smile said it all and the deal was sealed. However over the months that followed, she did have thoughts she might have rushed the decision. All the jitters were over as soon as she put it on on her wedding day as it represented herself and she really had fun in. She just wishes she can go back in time and wear it once again. Groomsmen’s outfits were rented from Cefai Formal Wear. Kevin explains that the wedding was, for the most part, a sentimental happening to him: “The woman I once met turned out to be my friend and eventually my life partner. This had to evolve into the next step to feel complete. It was a day when not only would Nadine and I become one, but our families, friends, colleagues and everyone we knew came together, mingled, and celebrated our special day”.
38 I DO
The best memory was seeing an old friend starting a friendship with one of their colleagues and a cousin becoming friends with an old classmate. Knowing everyone who was part of their celebration and not having a single awkward moment was all that they wished for. Her advice to couples planning their wedding is to take the decisions which best work for them and make them happy. Some people will disagree with decisions whatever these may be. “It is YOUR day and you should have nothing else than what you really want,” Nadine says. The newlyweds spent their honeymoon in China and Malaysia and
Nadine’s dream of hugging a baby panda finally came through. Malaysia was a relaxing destination. Flights were booked through a travel agency but Kevin did all the research and excursion bookings while she worried about the wedding details. Nadine especially thanks Kevin’s family, as well as friends and other family members who came from different countries to celebrate the day with them and made it extra special. She also extends her gratitude to the bridal party, her parents, brother, and younger sister for her patience and dedication. She says: “Thank you all for making our day much more special than we have ever dreamed of!”

LET’S TALK bridal hair!
Choosing the right bridal hair style is a big decision. With the wedding season in its full glory, CHRIS from MAF HAIRDRESSING will give some useful tips on what’s in for the Spring and Summer 2015 wedding season
F
or firsts, one has to consider the style of dress the bride will be wearing on her special day as this will also determine the style of her hair. If it’s a classical dress, one can opt for a classic look like a French roll or Chignon. If the bride is wearing a hippy chic dress, a boho-style updo will definitely look good. So it is very important that the style goes well together with both the dress and accessories. If a bride is considering changing her hair colour or perhaps using hair extensions to make her hair look longer, she must keep in mind that preparation for the big day has to start months before. The bride should take her time to experiment with the colours and style, to ensure the desired look is achieved on her wedding day.
As for the groom, his hair style remains more or less the same but one can opt to have his hair set by a hair stylist on the day. I suggest that the groom gets a haircut at least a week before the wedding, so the style looks perfect on the day. As for the beard or stubble, I always advise my customers to shave in time for a beard or stubble to grow to the desired length. Beards are in fashion at the moment, grooms should allow a month or two for their beard to grow to the desired length. If a groom wants a clean shave, I often advise them to have it done at a salon a couple of times before the actual wedding day to avoid a nasty reaction on the wedding day. WHAT’S HOT THIS SEASON? It is very fashionable to add fresh flowers to
the bridal equip’s hair this year. Braids and plaits go very well with boho bridal looks. The classic chignon is very in and goes really well with particularly long veils and flowery crowns. Crowns are also making a comeback this year. Self-made looks are the most popular trend for the year 2015. Soft looks with side swept fringes and deep partings are popular. Brides who want a sharp look may opt for updos with a deep centre parting. The more adventurous types can even go for origami hair accessories or little fairy lights strewn into the hair.

oming from Arab families but having lived in Malta for a number of years, Lina and Memo’s wedding was a mix of Arabic and Maltese traditions, which were immensely enjoyed by their guests. Among those invited were friends of different nationalities including Arabic, Maltese as well as European who came to Malta especially for the wedding. “It was quite an international wedding!” Lina explains. Being a Muslim wedding, the religious ceremony took place at the Imam’s office at the Mosque in Paola and celebrations, as well as a reception, followed. Among the Arabic traditions they enjoyed was the car-cade which left from their house with a trip around the Sliema promenade, to the reception venue in San Gwann. This tradition involves close family members and friends of the bride and groom who greet the bride at the house where she leaves from and accompany her. In Lina’s and Memo’s case, the groom arrived with the guests, picked up the bride and drove following each other while honking horns and playing loud music. Passers-by in Sliema were very surprised to see such a thing but they all smiled and greeted the newlyweds. Islander Ltd provided transport for the couple and their families on the day. At the reception venue, Lina and Memo were welcomed by their friend Haidar who chanted traditional wedding songs while playing the darbuka together with all their male friends. This was followed by chanting by Lina’s mother, mother-inlaw and female friends. In Arabic tradition, the engagement ring is normal band worn on the ring finger of the right hand. At the wedding, the band moves from the right hand to the left hand. The couple kept with this tradition and engraved “I love you Lina” and “I love you Memo” as a personal touch.

However, to keep with Maltese tradition too, Memo bought his bride-to-be a diamond ring as well. This is in the form of a heart with a diamond inside it. Another tradition is that the groom buys a gold jewellery set for the bride, which is usually made up of a necklace, a pair of earrings, a ring and a bracelet. Memo bought Lina two sets. He presented her with the first one at their engagement and she chose to wear this at the wedding. The second set was given at a special part during the wedding when close family members also present the bride with gold or money. Money is hung on the dress with a pin. Lina’s brother and a close friend kept with this tradition and hung the monetary gifts to her dress during the wedding.
36 I DO
Sharing their love story, Lina explains it was “love at first sight” when the two of them met. Memo happened to be a friend of Lina’s brother and the two were introduced to each other at a gathering. They immediately got along very well and were very interested in getting to know each other better. They found out they had so many things in common and their characters complement each other. Marriage was the natural next step for them and Memo asked Lina’s father for her hand in marriage, the traditional Muslim way. Lina had always envisioned herself in a Cinderella-like ball gown and she went for an ivory dress with a removable lace coverlet and a crystal and pearl belt which she quickly fell in love with.
Victoire Salon of San Gwann went through the style Lina was after in the weeks of preparations and styled her hair on the big day. Memo’s suit was rented from Natasha’s His and Hers in Attard. The couple recommends their service noting the sales assistants were always ready to help them with anything they needed. Around 250 guests were invited and while a budget was initially set, they did not stick to it. The chosen colour theme was red and white. However, the general theme was about photography. A photo booth was set up and the photos taken were kept in a guest book on which guests wrote their well wishes. Lina and Memo also prepared a photo slideshow starting from when they were little till when they met. This played on loop throughout the wedding. Wedding invitations also included a photo of the couple. These were custom made by Alexia at Boo&Co who quickly presented what they were looking for - something personal and not too formal. Il Cortile Farmhouse was the chosen reception venue with catering, including the wedding cake and beverages by Croce Bonaci. They liked the garden and how it was set up since this made it very easy for them to plan where everything was to go. Lights and lighting effects were added to the gazebo and trees. They also had a special setting where Lina and Memo shared some quite moments when they were not dancing or greeting their guests. It was a platform covered with a white carpet and had two white sofas decorated with flowers, crystals and tulle. Ausonio & Christine Florists created the perfect wedding atmosphere with a great selection of white and red fresh flower arrangements. They met Lina and Memo at Il Cortile Farmhouse a few months before the wedding to decide on venue set up among other details. Flowers, including roses, liliums, geberas, carnations, lisianthus, chrysanthemums and gysophilia, complemented the outdoor garden area. Large elegant centre pieces on bronze pedestals further dressed up the couple’s special seating area as did a large floral arch, decorated with white doves and butterflies, which served as wedding backdrop.
White floral bouquets with tulle bows decorated the outside columns of the terrace area while two arrangements next to the four-tiered wedding cake embellished the table set up under the white-dressed gazebo. Lina’s bridal bouquet was a hand-tied posy with a mix of best quality white and red fresh roses and a touch of gypsophilia. This was wrapped in beautiful white satin ribbon to complement her look. Lina’s friends from her Masters course in The Netherlands came to Malta especially for the wedding and towards the end of the reception they all came running to the dance floor wearing identical t-shirts saying
48 I DO
“Wedding Team” and dancing to their Masters song “Party Rock Anthem”. They also prepared t-shirts for Lina and Memo and they all went crazy on the dance floor. “It made me remember the fun times we had together in The Netherlands! I can say this was one of the main highlights of the wedding and everybody was amazed!” Lina recounts. Other university friends from France and Lebanon also attended and she believes this added a lot to the wedding and the wedding preparations. Most of them stayed at Lina’s parents’ house and they helped her get ready. “It made the wedding even more special and
full of unforgettable memories!” she adds. Reflecting on their special day, Lina and Memo feel this represented their personalities; everybody was feeling relaxed and having a good time. It was a fun wedding full of dancing, which Lina absolutely loves. The best advice they received and which they share is to “Live and enjoy each moment because it will all pass so quickly”. It definitely did in their case and soon they were enjoying a Mediterranean cruise on MSC booked through Globalair Travel. They stopped in Sicily, Italy, France and Tunisia and explored the cities there by themselves.

pots and flowers was the wedding theme picked by Justine Vella and Joseph Sammut for their big day. They tied the knot last year on 31 May. Justine and Joseph knew each other for eight years before they became an item. Two years into their relationship Justine started dropping hints about tying the knot, but Joseph never showed any interest. That was until Christmas day of 2012, when Justine found her engagement ring hidden in a Christmas cracker. Joseph proposed during Christmas lunch at Justine’s auntie’s house, surrounded by her family. They married in the church dedicated to St Gregory the Great in Sliema where Joseph volunteers in his free time. The church looked ravishing, decorated with white tulle and swags of flowers hanging from one column to the other.

The benches at the front of the church were covered in ivory material, while the rest of the benches had ivory bows with bunches of gypsophila along the aisle. The altar was beautifully decorated with white roses and candle sticks were placed next to the kneelers. Fr Paul Galea celebrated the nuptial mass. The couple exchanged two white gold bands by Clément Jewellery, with a matching his and hers design during the wedding vows. The bride chose a one shoulder ball gown from Ivory & Co to walk up the aisle. The dress’s top was embellished with sequins and its shimmery princess skirt had six layers of organza. The bride accessorised the bridal look with jewellery also by Clément Jewellery. Both the bride and groom wanted to organise their reception by the sea and close to the church so the Westin Dragonara Resort’s Reef Club seemed like the ideal venue. The venue was a favourite since both used to work there. Spots and flowers featured throughout the wedding accessories.

The invitations, the bride’s dress and the cake were decorated with spots, while flowers adorned the wedding party’s clothing and souvenirs. The invitations, ordered from Polidano Press, were ivory with tiny spots along the bottom edge and were put in an envelope which opened in the shape of a flower. At the venue, the pool was filled with big white floating balloons creating a magical atmosphere. This was taken care of by Once Upon a Wedding. A dance mat with the couple’s names and wedding date printed in the middle was placed in centre of the dance floor for the newlyweds to dance on.

A surprise slide show with their childhood photos was prepared by the groom’s brother Gregory and projected during the first dance. The couple’s relatives prepared a surprise dance to a tune sung by the bride’s cousin, Suzanne, surprising all the guests. Justine and Joseph visited Mauritius and Dubai for their honeymoon. They booked their holiday through A.Von Brockdorff Services Ltd.
